    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

My pc just shut down and i smell burning

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 08:48 AM PDT

I was playing r6 and my temps were normal, suddenly my pc shuts down and i smell burning. I immediately pulled out the power cord and opened my side panel and saw a dead fly on top of my gpu. Is it possible that this fly shorted my motherboard and If that the case is there a chance that it killed my other components?

Edit: the smell of burining is coming from gpu

Edit2: my pc boots without gpu

Is upgrading from Intel 6700K to RYZEN 3600 worth doing?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 08:18 AM PDT

So, I have a relatively dated build with a 6700K/MSI Gaming M7 Z170A combo in it and I was wondering how much of performance boost I could get with a RYZEN 3600/new motherboard combo.

    M.2 vs SATA SSD

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 05:59 AM PDT

I just impulse-bought a sata ssd because my computer boot times were driving me insane. But I just realized I'm upgrading my motherboard (along with some other stuff) to one that actually supports M.2 drives. So my question is, should I cancel my order and get an M.2? How big is the speed difference? Thanks!

Edit: thanks for the help guys! I've decided to stick with the ssd I bought

    1660 TI good stop-gap??

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 12:49 PM PDT

I don't need a new computer, but i desperately want a new computer. I currently dont own a computer, or any gaming device. I lost a computer to a house fire etc. I am currently waiting for a rtx 3080 to grace my presence, but with such high demand and poor supply, who knows how long that could take. Yet big navi is to grace our presence as well, but who knows how long after the reveal that they come out for sell, and it could run the same risk as the ampere series has with getting instantly sold out on its launch date.

I am thinking so just get a computer now with a cheap graphics card till i can get one of the better ones thats not a 2000 dollar rtx 2080 ti.... rip off.

Upgrading my cpu cooler for overclocking, but no idea what I'm doing or looking for or how to determine a good cooler

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 12:16 PM PDT

I am looking to upgrade my gaming pc that I finally built earlier this year. I am proud of it since it's my first pc I've ever built, but I'm looking to get a bit more performance out of my cpu, and am looking into overclocking my Ryzen 5 3600. I'm currently using the stock cooler that came with the cpu, but what would you recommend for a small form factor case, and what should i look for when determining a cpu cooler is good for overclocking???? I'm currently using a coolermaster Masterbox Q300L m-atx case. And the specs are

    Ryzen 5 3600 w/ stock cooler

    Gigabyte B550M DS3H

    16gb corsair vengeance ddr4 2600mhz ram

    MSI gtx 1660

    Noctua fans x4

    EVGA 600w psu

    My first PC Build

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 10:30 AM PDT

I am building my first PC tomorrow. I have been using a free rig my cousin gave me. It has a i5-2400 and 6gb of ddr3 ram. BUT he also gave me a vega 56 and a 500 W 80+ power supply. Its not the worst I guess but I got a 1440 p 32" monitor and it just doesn't load in anymore. Like the game wont render so I got the parts for my birthday.

    I got:

i5-8400 (free from my cousin he upgraded to a i9-9900)

    Gigabyte b365M ds3h

    corsair icue 220t white

corsair vengeance rgb pro white 3200 mhz 16gb

    vega 56

Thermaltake 500W power supply (upgrade soon)

    Samsung 970 Evo plus 500gb

I am so excited and nervous for the data transfer. But overall excited.

    Is a 1660ti enough for 1440p gaming?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 12:11 PM PDT

Hello, I was wondering if a 1660 ti is enough to handle 1440p gaming at 60fps. I mostly plan to play games like cyberpunk, The Witcher 3, and dark souls, but I don't really want to play those games at anything lower than 60fps. I don't particularly mind lowering the settings to high (I currently play most games on ultra with my 1080p monitor) but I don't want to play on medium settings across the board. Would it be worth even getting a 1440p monitor given my criteria?

Over 20 years since I last built a PC! Incredibly satisfied with my new build!

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 09:38 AM PDT

The last PC I built was an AMD Duron 1200Mhz, 2gb of Corsair ram, GeForce TI 4600, and a 250gb hard drive in a black Antec SX1030b case. This was early 2000s. It had a ton of blue cold cathodes, wires were a mess and sounded like a jet engine.

Today, I built this non-rgb stealthy quiet system: https://imgur.com/a/p05mIY1. Wire management was easy!

    • Case: Fractal Design Meshify S2

    • PSU: Corsair RM850x

    • Motherboard: MSI Z490-A Pro

    • CPU: Intel i7-10700k

    • Cooler: Scythe Fuma 2

    • RAM: Corsair 2x16gb, 3200mhz, C16

    • SSD: M.2 Samsung Evo Plus (500GB) [os] + 2.5" Samsung Evo 860 (1TB) [games]

    • HDD: Western Digital Red (8TB) [media]

    • GPU: GeForce 3080 (when they become available); I might settle on a GeForce 2060 Super for the moment.

Any suggestions on things I should buy or do to make my system better would be appreciated :). Feels good to bring to life a system again!

So I'm preparing the build for my new premium PC, I decided I will pay a premium to keep the theme "white", so consider that.

I have some doubts about the build, as I just picked some components based on their popularity in my usual online shop.

Here why I picked each item:

-Hard drive, I just picked the most popular NVME gen4, the price is Ok for me as long as it's 2TB, but could I pick something better here?

-I ordered both the Gigabyte Aorus Master 3080, and the Gigabyte Vision 3080, and I will keep the one that actually arrives, as there is no stock nowhere so I'll keep the first that gets here.

If that will be the Vision, I'm inclined to also pick the B550 Vision edition, just because..I dont know, they pair nice? Cmon look at that board lol.

But if I get another 3080, then I'm open with suggestions, what would be the best motherboard for $300? I'm fine with that price point, I want WIFI, BT, nice USB port number, usbC, good audio and good network, so basically premium features.

Chipset I'm not sure if I need the x570, I don't think so, as I'm not planning to do any overclocking, or at best something basic, but will just use it 80% gaming and 20% productive.

I saw the Aorus Master ones, they look good and have good reviews, in case I don't pick the Vision, would this one be good?

-About Rams, I wish to buy them White, so I picked those nice looking corsairs, but if there are really good alternatives, I'm open to that, also premium quality.

-About the Monitor, I currently have a LG UltraGear 34", but with the 3080 I would love to switch to a little bigger (especially vertical space) screen, so 38" would be ideal. From what I read, this one should be the best

-PSU, I picked this one because of the good reviews and because the cables are also white, which is nice. Anything better or this one is fine?

-AIO, won't lie, this CPU AIO looks sick, that is why I picked it. I will buy white sleeves and change the Kraken fans with 3x QL120 white Corsair.

-CPU I just put 3900x as I will buy the equivalent in the new 4000 series

Thank you in advance for any input!

Does a motherboard matter for GPU performance.

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 08:41 AM PDT

I have an old Asus A320M-K motherboard and am looking to upgrade my GPU, PSU and Ram to improve gaming performance. I don't plan to upgrade my motherboard but if it produces a noticeable performance boost I could upgrade that too. What do you guys think think I should upgrade and what parts to upgrade to?

    Specs:

    Amd Ryzen 5 1400.

    Asus Prime A320M-K.

    Crucial Ballistix 16GB 2400MHz.

CPU 40-50% idle + Question about constantly saving onto SSD vs HDD

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 01:57 PM PDT

    Hi

    Just built a new computer

Noticing my Ryzen 3700X is idle at 40-50%. Some tell me it's okay, others tell me it doesn't sound right. Do you think I should get a better cooler for the processor? I mean I hear that Ryzen can tolerate higher temperatures, but would a lower temperature than 40-50 mean a longer lifespan?

Also I have an external SSD which I am constantly resaving minor edits onto. I'm wondering, does each save widdle down the lifespan of my SSD? Should I be using an HDD instead for constantly saving and resaving little snippets of writing? My current strategy has been to use an SSD for projects and sometimes backup my data onto a bigger HDD, but I'm wondering if it makes more sense to go the other way around or just save SSD's for gaming and my OS.

I'm building my first PC and am wondering if anyone has any criticisms for my build. I've linked my PCPartPicker build here for those interested. Please be as critical as you can I want to build the best possible build I can make.

P.S. The 2070 Super will hopefully be an RTX 3070 when it releases. I used this 2070 Super to match the price point to have a better understanding of my budget.

Power Supply for RTX 3080? Need a suggestion

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 05:45 AM PDT

Hello, r/buildapc. I am making an upgrade for my existing computer. So I already have things like monitors, storage and other.

This supposed to be high-endish build, but I still want to reserve as much money as possible without harming my build. I am pretty comfortable with my motherboard, CPU and memory choice(Though I am open for good recommendations). And will get any good RTX 3080 when it will be available where I live.

But I am confused about Power Supply and not sure which one to get. As I said, I am trying to save some money, so avoided more expensive choices such as Corsair RM (2019). Right now I look either at the Chieftec Photon Gold GDP-750C-RGB, CHIEFTEC 750W Polaris or even Chieftec CORE BBS-700S. (Cant find any of them on the PCpartpicker for some reason) Which one of this you think is better and why? And if you have a better cheap option - let me know, please.

P.S. Sorry for a bit broken English if I made mistakes.

Hello, capture card in bottom pcie slot reverts to x8/x4 instead of x16/x4

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 11:59 AM PDT

On the Z390 Taichi, I understand that running sli on the two pcie cpu lanes sets it to x8/x8, but isn't the bottom pcie slot linked to the chipset instead of the cpu which should allow for x16 (cpu) / x4 (chipset)

According to GPU-Z when I have my gpu in the top (primary) pcie slot it's running fine at x16 but whenever I place a capture card in the bottom slot GPU-Z states that the gpu is running at x8 and I guess the bottom slot is max x4, making it x8/x4.

There isn't a lot online, the manual only outlines below SLI configs; but not populating a GPU that needs x16 and capture card that needs x4.

    Single GPU : x16 N/A N/A

    2x SLI : x8 x8 N/A

    3x SLI : x8 x4 x4

Isn't there a way to do x16 / x4, top (CPU) and bottom (Chipset) slot ?

Is it a jumper or bios setting ? I looked and couldn't find anything.

Can I move my OS to a new SSD without any faffing?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 01:24 PM PDT

Hi, I want to move my OS from an old (but still connected) HDD onto a new m.2 SSD.

Will I run into any issues with accessing the applications installed on the HDD if I install and run the OS off of the m2 SSD?

Essentially I just want to move my OS over and have everything else stay as it is.

    ryzen 2600 crazy temps

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 11:42 AM PDT

this is a ryzen 2600 using stock cooler and no OC.

I have like 60 degrees idle and crazy 80 - 100 degrees when gaming.

I have tried changing thermal paste twice.. temps got better but eventually after a while the temps are all over the place again.

i changed casing too as I thought my previous generic noname/brand case was crappy. I switched to https://www.fractal-design.com/products/cases/focus/focus-g/black/ but the temps are the same if not worse...

any idea? Will a coolermaster hyper 212 improve performance.. I have one on my old core i5 3570k and temps are pretty good (50 on idle and 55 - 60 on load).
