    Simple Questions - October 13, 2020

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 05:09 AM PDT

    This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

    Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    B550 Motherboards VRM Cheatsheet - Comparison by Hardware Unboxed

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 03:00 AM PDT

    To avoid bottlenecking you are always told not to cheap out on components, but what components can you cheap out on?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 05:12 AM PDT

    So a good CPU needs a solid motherboard, cooler, then obviously you would now need a good GPU to pair with it. You don't want your RAM to bottleneck your CPU and it would be a shame not going for a solid SSD for your system not to feel sluggish. Now with all your expensive parts, you definitely need a stable high quality high watt PSU to serve all of your heavy components with power. Now that you have your computer there's no way you're going to cheap out on a monitor below 120Hz and what about your mouse, keyboard and headset? Are you going to go cheap on them not controlling and experiencing your monster system to its fullest potential?

    Now look at your wallet.

    What can you actually cheap out on?

    Help a complete newbie understand what I'm looking for.

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 10:46 AM PDT

    Hi, I hoping to get into pc gaming and have been looking at various sites and while I get a basic gist of what I'm looking for it all seems over my head to be honest.

    I look at a PC and think to myself that sounds good but I'd be lying to say I understand anything.

    So many different brands and pieces coming together. For example I see a Ryzen 9 and think that's good but know nothing else about the pc such as how many cores I should aim for.

    Sorry for coming across a bit stupid but any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Edit: A big thank you to everyone offering help. I'm learning a lot and I appreciate all you taking the time :)

    Should I go for Air Cooling or an AIO Cooler for my first time build?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 11:30 AM PDT

    Well the title speaks for itself! What path should I take? The air path or the liquid path?

    Mind you, this is going to be my first build and it has a 2500 EUR budget(without monitor). If you want to know, I'll list some components that I'll be using:

    • CPU: either a Ryzen 9 3900 X or the Ryzen 9 5900 X.
    • Mobo: ASUS ROG Strix X570-E Gaming ATX AM4
    • GPU: RTX ASUS TUF 3080
    • RAM: G. Skill RipJaws V 32 GB DDR4 3600 MHz (2x16 GB)
    • PSU: Corsair HX 1000W 80+ Gold or Plat Fully Modular
    • CPU Cooler: not decided because of my question
    • Case: Haven't found a good one yet for my budget
    • Storage: 500 GB Boot drive(NVMe) and 1 or 2 TB SSD for mass storage

    Help with wiping hard drive

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 10:20 AM PDT

    Hi,

    I have one 500gb ssd where I have windows and all my files installed. I want to wipe everything and install windows again and not save any of the files I have as I don't need them.( new build so I don't have much anyway, just couple games and few word documents).

    Can I just boot from a usb with windows installed on it and then wipe everything from ssd and start again? Or do I have to do stuff first before beginning to install fresh windows again? Thanks

    A GPU without a 6/8 pin pcie cable?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 11:32 AM PDT

    Hey, I planned on getting an rx 570 this week but I have found a problem when opening the case.

    From what I've read it requires 6 pin pcie cable, but my powersupply seems to not have one, it looks like it has a 4 pin one, I think.

    What do I do? Get a new PSU? Forget about getting the card at all?

    G-SYNC not allowing me to enable it on LG TV

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 01:56 PM PDT

    I specifically bought an 4K LG TV so I could take advantage of the G-Sync functionality for my gaming PC equipped with a GTX 1080. I got it installed today and was excited to set it up. However, when I go to my pc Nvidia control panel, there is no option to set up G-Sync under "Display". I have tried the following:

    • Naming hdmi port to PC • Setting display to 120hz • Setting resolution to 1080P • Restarting PC • Ensuring Instant Game Response is on (it is)

    However, the option just isn't appearing in my control panel no matter what I do. I should note that I am using a DisplayPort to HDMI cable which might be the source of the problem, but it's hard to know for sure. Anything I should try?

    GPU SPARKED this is the aftermath - is it done for?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 04:39 AM PDT

    Pc crashed during casual browsing. Wouldn't boot for 10 minutes. After that it booted up with a spark! Immediately turned it off. Pc runs normally without the card, I'm not trying to put the card back until I know it's safe.

    It's a 1070 Ti if that matters. It still has warranty (bought on bestbuy), but I'm currently not in the US and I won't be for a while so claiming it from the EU will be a real hassle.

    Improving Current Build for VR Use

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 12:15 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready: Looking for help upgrading individual parts to address weak points

    Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yep.

    What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

    VR gaming via Valve Index. Specifically use with graphics-intensive games such as ENB-modded Skyrim VR and No Man's Sky.

    If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

    Ideally, extreme-use case would likely be stable 60FPS with heavily modded Skyrim VR or Fallout 4 VR with 300%+ resolution setting and/or supersampling. Current rig can do ~220% resolution and isn't quite at a stable 60FPS (not many mods, either - maybe 30 or so?). Not sure if I'll get there with only $500 in upgrades, but as close as possible is the goal.

    What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $500.

    In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

    Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    This is my currently owned machine. Only thing not listed here is the addition of an extra 250gb hard drive, but that's it.

    Provide any additional details you wish below.

    My goal is to spend ~$500 to replace one or two of the weakest links in my PC to boost my performance with my brand-new Valve Index headset without doing a total overhaul (headset ate most of my "fun money" I saved from an internship). At first, I was thinking of jumping from the GTX 1070 to the RTX 3070 (hence the $500 USD budget), but I realized that bottlenecking from my older CPU could be an issue, and wanted to consult some more experienced builders on whether that money would be best spent elsewhere. Additionally, I'm not currently overclocking the CPU, if it would be worth learning how to do that and keeping the current chip.

    I still have many questions but would appreciate any insight on this build. I've been looking at a liquid cooler, but not entirely sure if I need or should go that route. I will be running a 1080ti until I can purchase a 3080. Am I skimping on any components that I should be investing a bit more in, or am I overbuying on other areas. I intend to overclock. Thanks all.

    Ryzen 3900x or 5900x for Blender and After effects?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 12:12 PM PDT

    I'm currently trying to decide whether or not its worth waiting for the 5900 or just going with the 3900x for use in blender and after effects.

    Would one perform better in these particular use cases?

    RTX 3080 or 3090 for LG 27GN950?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 12:07 PM PDT

    Hey everyone, I am looking to build my first PC and I am stuck between what graphics card to pick if I were to choose the LG 27GN950. The price difference isn't an issue for me, but I want to know if the 3090 will be worth it for double the price in terms of performance. I will primarily be using the PC for gaming, no workstation related things like rendering, video editing, etc.

    Also, I am considering just getting the LG 27850 1440p monitor and pairing it with the RTX 3080. I've read that at 27 inches (which is the max I can go in terms of desk space) 4k isn't the best bang for your buck. Is 4k gaming even worth it?

    EDIT: Forgot to mention my setup will only have ONE of the two possible monitors listed above.

    $85 for fans and an air cooler VS $110 for an AIO

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 11:29 AM PDT

    I'm hoping to keep my 3700x a little bit cooler while reducing noise from the stock cooler too. I have 3 open fan slots right now that I plan to fill, which would make for a total of 3 intake and 3 exhaust. I want this air flow for when I upgrade to one of the new and hot GPUs.

    Option 1 - air cooled $85: I could spend $45 on 3 more Noctua Redux fans to match the rest of my fans. Plus fan splitters for $10. And finally a basic tower cooler for like $30.

    Option 2- AIO $110: I'm looking at either the Arctic Freezer 240mm for $100 or the brand new Be Quiet! Pure Loop 240mm for $95. I'd also be adding an extra front intake fan for $115 too. This would give me 3 intake, 1 exhaust, and 2 exhausting through the AIO radiator.

    Should my C: drive be the fastest

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 02:07 PM PDT

    Hello,

    I'm in the process of upgrading my PC and decided to buy two SSDs (one for the OS and one for everything else). The one I'm interested in for games and other apps has 2TB with 5000MB/s sequential reads; but my doubt is regarding the OS one, all 512GB SSDs I've seen have a maximum 3100MB/s sequential read, and I have no use for a 1TB C: drive. If my C: drive has 3100 MB/s read and my secondary drive has 5000 MB/s read, will the OS drive limit loading time for apps installed in the other drive?

    P.S.: I'm sorry if this was a bit confusing, I might edit it later to make it more clear if it is too unintelligible.

    Asus vs MSI? GSkill vs Corsair? (Brand rep)

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 12:30 PM PDT

    Notwithstanding specific feature sets or what not, any input on how these brands compare?

    For motherboard, thoughts on overall quality/reliability/stability and software tools between ASUS and MSI?

    For RAM modules, any thoughts in quality between GSkill and Corsair?

    Or flip a coin and get the best fit for me?

    I'm going to use my GTX970 for now until I can get my hands on the new 3070. I'm worried the cooler won't fit because of the compatibility note at the bottom. I know the Meshify C is a little bit on the smaller side for cases but it's the one item I've already purchased so far. I did a good amount of research on each of the parts I want to buy, but again I'm not sure if it's all correct. Would appreciate any help!

    Im getting rid of all of my components that has RGB.

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 02:29 AM PDT

    A year ago I was all about the RGB. RGB mousepad, keyboard, mouse, fans, strips, you name it. But I keep seeing these minimalist setups with little to no RGB and it looks sooo much more attractive to me.

    So Im selling all my RGB components and going for an all-black sleek look.

    Has anyone else gone through a similar journey going from RGB to non RGB?

    ~$1500 pc

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 06:34 AM PDT

    G'day. I'm interestad in my own pc station for about $1500. Can you rate this desicion? I am from Ukraine and based on this the price can be different than in another country. Not going to buy already used components. Planning to use this machine in front-end sphere and in free time will play games only for myself (without fanaticism). Not interested in VR. Also now need one monitor for my task. Don't want to change components in next 5-7 year. Planning to force this system once after the computer is assembled and don't uprade it till final moment. Now it will be great to play with max settings (Anno 1800, Forza Horizon 4), but I don't have any fetish in max fps and max settings if the price of that is a large sum of cash. After some years I'm planniing to change all system (as example, I assume later it will be irrationally to buy new cpu for am4 socket).

    1. CPU. Decided to stay at Ryzen 5 3600 OEM (without box cooler);
    2. Videocard. Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Gaming OC 3X 8192MB (GV-N207SGAMING OC-8GD). Yes, I choose it because of: 3 fans (do not want 2 fans on card), card is boosted to 1815MHz, want to have one vendor with mobo, 3x - do not need usb-c;
    3. Motherboard. Gigabyte B450 Gaming X. In my mind there is no necessary to pay for superfluous features (ex. rgb illumination and e.t.c.). Need mobo only for current componets without prospects for the future;
    4. RAM. Crucial DDR4 16GB (2x8GB) 3000Mhz Ballistix Black (BL2K8G30C15U4B). In my country this RAM is a popular choice, so i take it too and will try to boost it a little;
    5. Cooler. Be quiet Pure Rock Slim (BK008). Firstly, wants to have some details from one producer and secondly, this cooler is presented as "quiet and efficient";
    6. Storage. WD Blue SN550 WDS500G2B0C 500 ГБ. Realise it is not high class component, but, actually, no need in it. I have one external hard drive and this one needed to keep soft and some games;
    7. Power supply unit. Be quiet System Power 9 CM 700W (BN303). Yes, mb i will pay some money only for brand (like for apple electronics), but it is a be quiet like a cooler;
    8. Case. Deepcool Matrexx 55 MESH black (DP-ATX-MATREXX55-MESH). Have any assumption how warm will be all this system, so stopped at this case cause of pretty disign (in my opinion) and it has lattice in front size where will be additional fans (one is already installed in back side);
    9. Fans. Be Quiet Pure Wings 2 120mm PWM (BL039). These fans have 4 pins and cost as same fan with 3 pins. I take it to try to change speed of rotation for myself;
    10. Monitor. Samsung C27JG50 27 " (LC27JG50QQNXZA). At this moment I have a laptop 15.6" and very old 22" monitor (I guesse, it is from 2010), and now I want to try smth new. This monitor is not best decision to display correctly color space (remind, front-end sphere) but as I am not a professional (hope yet..) and do not have a lot of money for this pc.

    1tb SSD + HDD VS 2tb SSD

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 11:57 AM PDT

    I have a ton of pictures I want to either store on an external SSD or internal storage. I also like plenty of space.

    Basically, I'm wondering if you think a 2TB SSD is worth it over a 1TB SSD + HDD or external SSD/HDD

    Help: Placing cpu cooler over cpu prior to adding the mounting bars etc. Could I have damaged the CPU?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 01:22 PM PDT

    So my cpu cooler is a noctua d15 and I wasn't sure how it would fit on the motherboard. So I placed the radiator on the CPU to see how it would fit before adding any of the mounting components. In hindsight, I feel scared that I may have damaged my cpu by doing that because it must of added some pressure on the cpu

    btw this was my first time building a pc

    EDIT: Just wanted to say that I have yet to check whether it works since I haven't put the RAM in there yet

    Thanks for the help

    New Build, GPU Fans run, CPU fan runs for a moment, RAM, mobo lights up, no debug and nothing on screen

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 11:21 AM PDT

    CPU - Ryzen 3700 mobo - ASRock x470 taichi GPU - GeForce RTX2070 Super RAM - Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 16gb (2x8GB) 2666 SSD - addlink SSD S70 M.2 PCIe Gen3x4 PSU - Corsair CX 650M

    First time building. When I turn on unit, the CPU fan lights up but only spins for a second and stops. Case fans aren't on. Heat sink plugged in CPU Fan. GPU fans spin. Both RAM light up. Initially one didn't but I clicked it in. They are in the A2/B2 slots. I don't have a hard drive, but SSD in PCIe 1. Power supply hooked up to motherboard 24pin, 8 pin CPU, and 8+6 pin GPU. Nothing comes on screen and no debug number. I've checked for broken CPU pins. Heat sink is on properly (I think).

    I'm assuming I'm missing something spectacularly obvious. I don't think any parts are broken.

    returning enthusiast looking for a second opinion

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 03:02 PM PDT

    hiya,

    As the title says, I used to be in the scene but kinda stopped paying attention around the time the 1080tis were the hot thing. I'm looking to build a new pc and want to make sure I am not overlooking anything.

    my main concern is I want to make sure the cpu heatsink will be ok. I also want to make sure the fans in the case and heat sink are not excessively loud. I dont want my computer to sound like a jet engine if I am not doing anything strenuous

    I am also deciding if i should wait or not. I know that some new hardware is being released at the end of the month but not totally sure if it is worth it. I have no intention of buying the new stuff, but not sure what effect it will have on the prices of the stuff I want to buy.

    any advice would be appreciated
