    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

BIOS says RAM is running at 3200mHz but it runs at 2133mHz in Windows?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 06:34 AM PDT

Hey people from this sweet community, I hope you all are doing good on this lockdown. I've recently built my PC and everything works great yet. The only thing that I found is that windows keeps running my ram (Corsair vengeance PRO RGB White, 2x8GB) at 2133mHz. The mobo is a Gigabyte B550M DS3H Rev 1.0. I asked my uncle for help and we went to the BIOS and sat it all up (Automatic voltage, XMP enabled [because this RAM is XMP certified] and speed multiplier set to 32.00). Everything was okay until we saved changes... The PC rebooted and immediately did three beeps (which as far as I know, refer to memory read error or something like that), then rebooted again and repeated the beeps until the third reboot, which did only one beep (which confirms that the system is OK). It booted to windows right after that and everything worked fine, but the frequency stood at 2133mHz.

I also wanna mention that neither the ram or the mobo referred to overclocking when running at such speed, I assumed that it would just set it up to 3200mHz but it didn't. Does anyone know any possible solution? Should I get set the voltage manually to 1.2 or even 1.35v? (Because the box where the rams came said they needed 1.35v to run)

Edit: BIOS is already updated to the latest release (F10 as Gigabyte says).

Edit 2: My CPU is an AMD Ryzen 5 3600. In case anyone is wondering.

Edit 3: Thanks everyone for the tips, I'll give them a try in a couple of hours and tell you all if it worked.

Edit 4: Some have told me to upload some screenshots of CPU-Z's memory and SPD sections. Here they are: https://imgur.com/a/5EgbP2Q

Edit 5: Everything in BIOS is set to AUTO, except for XMP profile (which is ON right now). I had set the memory multiplier to 32.00 but my PC would not boot with that setting, so it's all now on automatic.

My dad is 66 and a gamer so naturally I built him a pc

    Posted: 11 Oct 2020 02:23 PM PDT

First of all I love this group. I don't post ever here but I always come to it to read up on builds and such. Anyway I had bought two lian li cases dynamic 011 last year. One.is my air cool build. So I gave my dad my xbox one s. He slowly started to game more and more until he played my pc. He said his Fav game Battlefield 1 looked better but also felt more responsive.

So two days ago I took the extra lian li case that I was intended to use for a first time water cool.build with the money I had saved and used it for air cooling for my dad's build instead. I probably wont get a chance to build a water cool build for a long time. But my dad is my hero and he deserves this. Btw My cable management is not that good still but I'm learning and getting better. I recently got me a rx 5700xt sapphire nitro+ from a friend. So I gave my dad my vega 56. I already have two 8 gig sticks of ram for him too. I bought the CPU a ryzen 3600. The kraken aio x73. And the motherboard I had a spare of as well. And I bought a 850watt psu evga gold rated. I also had extra fans. This is the result. Recorded at night for ultimate visual.

    https://imgur.com/a/LbdrGYS

Just gave it to my father. Dude legit broke down in tears. And is so happy!!! Welcome to the pc life dad!

Update: video wasnt working so I'll use a photo instead.

Gtx 1660 super or RX 5600 xt?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 04:56 AM PDT

Torn between these two. My cpu is R5 3400g (I know it's a bad choice; chose this due to budget constraint at time of build). Which of the choices is good for 1080p gaming? Should I wait for a latest budget gpu to be released by 2021? Also torn if I should go for 6gb vram or push my budget and go for an 8gb. Planning to play the latest AAA games at least at Med-High settings.

Is there anything I can do during my first build that can possibly destroy my entire system ? Like a wrong connection, -ve +ve difference etc ?

I want 144fps at max settings in AAA Games.

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 08:16 AM PDT

    Hello,

I'd like to play AAA games like Mafia: Definitive Edition or RDR2 at 144FPS in 1080P.

I own a R5 3600 and am looking for the best graphics card to do the job. Which one should I get to hit that framerate at max details? Do I have to upgrade my CPU too?

    Thank you!

Upgrading from 7700k due to bottleneck on the 3080, what should I get?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 12:25 PM PDT

Hello! I've currently been running on a MSI Z270 mobo with a core i7 7700k, after upgrading from the 1070 to the 3080, I've noticed a pretty noticeable bottleneck in most titles, that being said, new CPU's are on the horizon, and am deciding between either investing in an i9 9900k so I wouldn't have to upgrade my mobo, or going with an entirely new platform with Ryzen. Any thoughts?

Hello! About A Month back someone on this Sub helped me design this PC but my budget has decreased a bit and I need to save $100 or so. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate so much! Thanks!

The old question: 2070 or 5700xt?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 12:12 PM PDT

This is my current build, I am planning on buying parts tmrw bc I'm waiting for amazon prime day deals if there are any.

The only part I'm not sure about is the GPU

I currently have this 5700xt on my list: https://pcpartpicker.com/mr/amazon/WGLwrH

    But I'm also considering this 2070 https://pcpartpicker.com/mr/newegg/H7MTwP

Took the risk of building my PC slowly every month, was lucky to nab a 3080, waited for Zen 3 announcement, once finished, it wasn’t smooth as games crashed, but in the end, my PC turned out to be okay. Here’s what I learned.

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 01:29 AM PDT

    My very first built PC

Specs: Ryzen 5 3600, MSI MAG B550M Mortar, Patriot Viper RGB 8GBx2 DDR4 4133MHz CL19, GALAX RTX 3080 SG, Sabrent Rocket Q 1TB, Seasonic Focus Plus Platinum 750W

For the first month, I bought Arctic and Scythe fans, SSD, and RAM. The next month, it was mATX case, PSU, motherboard, and CPU cooler Fuma 2. I changed the fans of Fuma 2 with Noctua NFA12x15 and Gentle Typhoon. Then this month, I was able to buy an RTX 3080 off a physical Japanese retailer(I live in Japan) on October 1st. With Zen 3 announcement so near I waited. Then Nov. 5 release date came up and I thought it was too far that I had to check the system for faulty parts ASAP so I bought a 3600, planning to upgrade to a 5900X sometime in Xmas or early next year.

Finally, I managed to complete the system. I turned it on. My 27 inch 1440p 155hz monitor was blank. I panicked and asked buildapc.

First thing, I learned: Depending on the motherboard, you need to insert the Windows USB installer from the very first boot. I thought first boot would take me to BIOS and then put my USB and boot it from there. Also, error LEDs will always light up for checking and it's the last LED that has problem if it doesn't disappear.

Installed Windows and all updates and drivers. I enabled PWM and Smart Mode for the fans and XMP profile for the RAM to set 4133MHz. When I played Horizon Dawn, Mafia Definitive Edition, and RE2, they all crash just less than a minute into the desktop without any error. Same goes for benchmarks. I know the 3080 crash problem but I tried all possible drivers of the 3080 including the newest by using DDU but to no avail. I was anxious that the 3080 I have was defective.

I went back to the retailer and in their test bench the card was fine. They then told me I better check my RAM and try disabling XMP. And lo and behold the crashes and BSOD disappear. What I've learned is this: when buying RAM, check compatibilities with the motherboard and XMP doesn't mean automatic stability. I manually OCed the RAM to 3600MHz CL16 instead of XMP and no problems now. Max temp for CPU and GPU are both 77C funnily enough but given how my case which is non-mesh and is mATX, I'm satisfied. Idle temps are both around high 40s to low 50s.

Thank you so much guys! To those hunting for a 3080, just try and don't get saddened by not being able to get it because it may mean Big Navi is for you. Zen 3 is going to be exciting.

I contacted Gigabyte support about X570 Zen3 supported BIOSes

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 08:07 AM PDT

I just wanted to potentially inform others as I wanted to know the answer so maybe others do too. I'm in the situation where I want a 5k series chip but don't have a 3k series to update the motherboard with, and might want a motherboard without BIOS flashback...

I contacted Gigabyte support asking about when their motherboards would ship with a BIOS which is suitable for Zen3 and they said that new stock should ship with the latest BIOS and that to confirm that we should contact the supplier to see how new the stock is. I don't know of an exact cut off, they just said "new".

They also informed me that they could check what version of BIOS a motherboard shipped with by the serial number of the motherboard. I'd assume this would mean that you can buy a motherboard and then double check (via support) that it will support the Zen3 without having to actually try it with a 5k series chip.

Hopefully this was helpful to at least one person; I'd assume this would mean you can try to get the latest stock of motherboard and then double check Zen3 is supported. If it isn't send it back and get an even later stock version once they're available.

Considering this 1660 ti - is this a good price/choice?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 10:08 AM PDT

I am considering picking up this 1660 ti, as a replacement to my old and dying gtx 670 from 8 years ago. I will not be upgrading any other components of my PC (Intel core i7-3770K 3.50 ghz). I do medium gaming and don't really need anything crazy.

Is this a good choice in card, and is this a good price ($239.49 after rebate)? I like it's general low power consumption. With so many graphics cards in the same or similar price point, it's very confusing knowing what to get. For example, I was thinking of just getting the 1660 Super, but confusingly it is more expensive than the ti right now on Newegg. Also, there are so many versions and editions of each card... is there anything I'm not realizing in the card that I linked, like maybe it has less ram than usual, or something like that?

Also, part of me is tempted to wait until black Friday, but there is a chance this won't go any lower than the current rebate, right?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Help! All of my USB drives seem to turn on and off randomly

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 01:33 PM PDT

Built my first gaming PC about 6 months ago and have been completely loving it. The only issue is that all of my USB devices will randomly disconnect and reconnect for no reason. My mouse, keyboard, headphones, etc will all shut off for a split second and then reconnect with the little chime sound. Some days it will be completely fine, and some days it will do it every 10 or 15 minutes. All of my drivers that I can find are up to date. Sometimes 1 or all 3 of my monitors will even go black for a second while it does this. Mobo is Asus Prime X570-Pro and I have a Ryzen 3700x. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Are aio coolers worth it over air?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 10:29 AM PDT

Some people say that it is worth it because aios have higher steady state times which is good for gaming. Also unless you buy Corsair or NZXT aios 240mm aios tend to be similar in price to high end air coolers like the nhu14s, nhd15(s), dark rock pro 4, etc.

    Building a new PC!

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 06:34 AM PDT

Hey, I am looking into building a new pc with an MSI Gaming x Trio 3080 and a Ryzen 7 3700x. First of all, is this a good GPU/CPU combo? Second of all, what motherboard would fit this combo? Also, if you want the rest of the parts list, the link is https://pcpartpicker.com/list/FdZzy4 (and yes, I know it says founder's edition graphics card). Finally, if you have any more suggestions for cheaper parts that would also work well, I am always down to spend less money.

    Ruben 3900x vs 5800x

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 05:02 AM PDT

Building a new gaming rig from the ground up and was wondering what you guys think. I had been holding out for the 5000 series to pair with a 3080 (whenever I can get my hands on one). I was originally planning on the 5800x but with the price tag at $450, would it be better (price to performance) to go with the 3900x if I can get one for under $400?

Edit: I will be gaming on a 1440p Ultrawide

Looking to build a pc at the end of the year ($1800 price limit)

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 01:09 PM PDT

Will be used for gaming and streaming with a price limit of $1800. Primarily play competitive shooters (cod, valorant, etc) but also play open-world games (cyberpunk, the division 2, etc.) and already have a 1080p 165hz and a 4k 60hz monitor. I've got some parts picked out but want some advice for upgrades/downgrades where needed.

Also, the 3900x is currently on sale for $400 right now. Should I go ahead and jump on it or should I consider the 4000 series? I am looking for the best price per performance.

Also, I have no idea about the case, motherboard, and power supply, and if everything is compatible.

    Thanks for the help.

    Finalizing my €10.000 Workstation

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 10:31 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

here's what I currently put together (location: Germany atm). It's rather decent, I guess.

    https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/McB4Dc

The Zenith II Extreme Alpha has 5x m.2 NVMe slots and with a HYPER-M-2-X16-GEN-4-CARD expansion on a PCIe x16 slot, that would extent to 9x m.2 slots. Is that correct?

The above costs ~8.000€. Basically what I'm missing for a remaining budget of ~2.000€ is:

Monitor: 4k, color accuracy required & 1440p (I'll add to budget for a second monitor)

    CPU Cooler (preferably Air)

    Case

    Fans

Additional question: How much would you pay to have someone put that all together? It's probably my most expensive lego set yet. ^^

    Thanks a bunch!

RAM Help in relation to Ryzen 5 3600.

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 12:16 PM PDT

I have 2x8 DDR4-3600 RAM running in xmp mode under Win-10 with a motherboard that only permits DDR4-3466 RAM I believe. I also have a Ryzen 5 3600 which, according a certain wiki article, only permits DDR4-3200. I am wondering if adding 2x4 GB DDR4-3200 RAM would actually bottleneck my current RAM or if it is already truly bottlenecked down to DDR4-3200 speeds.

    Need advice

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 01:39 PM PDT

    My current specs are:

    CPU: i5 2300 RAM: 16GB DDR3 GPU: GTX 1050ti MOBO: DQ67EP

I could either upgrade the CPU to an i5 10600k, the MOBO to the MSI B460M Pro WiFi and the RAM to 16GB DDR4. Or I could sell the whole PC and build a completely new PC.
