Building my very first PC this weekend thanks to you all!

    Posted: 07 Oct 2020 07:12 PM PDT

    Boxes galore!

I've been planning to build a PC since COVID started, and wouldn't have been able to do it without you all. My first post in this community was asking whether or not I should match my GPU's VRAM with however many CPU cores I'll have in order to prevent a "bottleneck." Oh, how I've learned haha.

    Specifications:

    • GPU: RTX 2060 Super

    • CPU: Ryzen 5 3600X

    • RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 32GB 3200mhz

    • MOBO: MSI B550 A-Pro

    • SSD: WD Blue 1TB

    • PSU: Seasonic GX-650

    • Fans: (x3) Corsair SP120 RGB, (x2) Corsair SP140 RGB

    • Case: Fractal Design Meshify C

    • Mouse: Corsair Harpoon Wireless RGB

    • Keyboard: Corsair K70 Mk.2 RGB

    • Monitor: AOC 24G2

Again, thank you all. I'm so excited. I'll post the build once it's complete this weekend.

Where does the 1080/ 1080ti currently stand on value/performance?

    Posted: 08 Oct 2020 06:20 AM PDT

My friend is looking to upgrade his gpu, from a rx 570. A couple of months ago i said to look at the 5600 xt/rtx 2060 because of the value. But with this new launch there are more people selling their stuff. How does the gtx 1080 stand? I found a zotac 1080 for 287 usd.

(Final Update!) Please help! BF is turning 30 and I want to surprise him with parts to build a gaming PC but I don't know anything about PCs!

    Posted: 08 Oct 2020 02:13 PM PDT

Behold the final product! (And a little progress pic too)

Hello everyone! Once again thank you all so much for your kind words on the last post! I promised a final update for you all once it was complete. It's been just under a month so I thought I should let everyone know how it went now I know that it definitely works.

So the actual building process itself went fine except for some minor hiccups. BF couldn't install wifi chip due to the graphics card covering the spare PCI slot. Luckily I had a little emergency fund for something like this so I was able to replace it with a wifi usb dongle (that word will never not be funny to me I'm sorry) instead and it works like a charm. There was also a moment where it stopped working and we were freaking out until we realised that the CPU power cable wasn't properly connected to the motherboard (we're two halves of a whole idiot).

As I went to work I missed most of the build process but I did get to see the unboxing of the monitors!

Once the build was done BF added some of his own bits and bobs peripherals, he bought some speakers and brought the joystick up from storage so we could play squadrons together! Even though I royally SUCKED at it (wow pc games are a lot more sensitive than console ones) I had a lot of fun and I hope we can play more games together in the future. (P.S the BOTW mouse pad was a birthday gift from a friend who was in on the secret).

I know there were some worries about the power supply the last time, which is why I waited a while and checked the PC was fine with some heavier games before updating. I can honestly say it works really well! And BF seems happy with it so that's what matters most to me. He's mostly concerned about how to manage all the wires right now haha.

Once again thank you all SO SO much for your help! I couldn't have done this without you all and err...yeah one day I might be back because my laptop is getting on a bit and I'm not going to lie, I like the dual monitor situation and how cool the setup looks now it's all put together. So in a couple of years, I might need some help myself!

Thank you everyone! This is such a great community and I'm so glad I jumped out of my comfort zone and learned something new!

Edit: Also forgot to mention that because the last reddit post somehow blew up, BFs cousin saw the post plus one made on FB and connected the dots so lol hi T!

    RTX 3080; 3600 vs 5600x CPU

    Posted: 08 Oct 2020 10:21 AM PDT

    Hi all,

So we just got to see the zen3 CPUs.

I am planning a build with a RTX 3080 primarily for gaming in VR (HP Reverb G2). As it's quite a high resolution I am wondering what CPU to go for. Obviously the 5600X is going to be better, but is that performance difference worth it for the price difference in my use case (high res VR gaming)?

3600 is still sold for €~170 here and the 5600X will likely be sold for €300 at release.

As I am not able to get my hands on a RTX3080 (like most of us) and I am still waiting for the VR headset, I still have some time to wait.

What do you think? Is a 3700 maybe interesting as well?

"its not that hard" they said

    Posted: 08 Oct 2020 07:37 AM PDT

I finally built my first pc. If you've seen a previous post of mine (Motherboard going around the world) you'd know how long Id been waiting for this.

Here are a bunch of pics (first one with the best cable management I've ever done in my life, took me a solid hour, and the second is when I first put everything together without putting any panels on)

    https://imgur.com/a/I4LvU8e

Specs: Ryzen 5 3600 w a stock amd cooler Asrock b450m steel legend T-Force 16gb delta rgb ram (3200mhz CL16) Gigabyte Gaming OC (Triple fan) RX5600XT EVGA 600BQ Deepcool Mattrex 50 RGB (w 4 rgb fans)

Here's a bunch of problems I faced because I'm a dumbass: Putting on the AMD cooler was the hardest thing I vr had to do. I screw in one side the other gets out and in the end i ended up taking it on and off (recentering) about 5 times before I got it right After the build was done, Windows wouldn't see my M.2. I had it in the ultra M.2 Slot, which wasn't made for SATA. Ended up removing the GPU and almost breaking the clip that holds it in. I did a super dumb mistake of putting in the psu first. Without pluging in the cables I needed Took me a solid 45 mins trying to perfect the io shield The fan configuration in my case was the most time I used my brain in my life. Theyre 4 Fans, each with A power connector and RGB connector. But the case just made it way more confusing

But it was all worth it. When I'm back home I'll take more pictures of my perfect cable management.

Should I wait to try and get a 3070 or just buy a 2070 rn.

    Posted: 08 Oct 2020 08:29 AM PDT

So I'm a college student, not entirely broke, but I don't have the money to afford a nice GPU. My current GPU is bad, like awful. I ran 3dmark on it and I think the score was like 1700? I'm in pretty dire need of a new one. I really wanna get the RTX 3070, but given how the 3080 was handled I'm worried I won't get it and I will have waited for nothing. Do you guys think I should wait to try and get one before I buy anything else? If so, how long should I wait?

Currently I have 16 gigs of 3600 MHz RAM and the ryzen 5 3600 cpu.

    AMD vs Intel

    Posted: 08 Oct 2020 06:04 AM PDT

Hi Reddit! I am building a new PC for the holidays and am going to try and buy the parts on amazon prime day. My question is, I am going with the new nvidia chips for my gpu like everyone else but is it better to get the new amd chips or stick with an intel i7 or i5 for the cpu? Also a big value fan but this PC will most likely last me 4-5 years so longevity is more of the key.

AMD Ryzen 9 5950X - motherboards that will support it?

    Posted: 08 Oct 2020 12:29 PM PDT

Hello guys, I'm thinking about building my first computer from scratch when the Ryzen 9 5950X is released/I can get one.

Since I wanted to plan my shopping for parts, do you have any idea on which motherboards might support one? And also, what is the socket of the CPU?

I wanted to check for watercooler solutions for it. Do you have any recommendations?

    Thanks in advance!

    Cheers :)

    Should I get a Ryzen 7 3700x or Core i7 10700k?

    Posted: 08 Oct 2020 12:11 PM PDT

I want to upgrade my PC soon, particularly my CPU. I do a lot of gaming and video editing, and I've been waiting for the announcement of AMD's new 5000 series processors for a while. What they showed today was pretty good, but I was a little put off by the price, particularly $450 USD for the 5800x. As such, I was thinking one of two options:

    1. Get a Ryzen 7 3700x now, and upgrade to a 5000 series CPU later, or
    2. Get a Core i7 10700k now, which will likely have similar benchmarks to the 5800x, and is around $100 USD cheaper.

I've been leaning towards to 10700k, but my only issue with that is the motherboards for that CPU currently don't support PCIe 4.0, while AMD boards do. I should also note my current CPU is the i7 4790k. Let me know what you think.

    AMD Ryzen 5 5800x or i7-10700k?

    Posted: 08 Oct 2020 10:11 AM PDT

Was pretty underwhelmed with AMD's new CPU's.

5900x for -3% performance of the i9-10900k. I HAVE BEEN INFORMED THIS IS ONLY FOR BATTLEFIELD 5 AND IT PERFORMS BETTER ON ALL OTHER GAMES.

I don't expect the 5800x to have a performance boost against the i7-10700k with the information we already have.

Do I go for Intel or go for the 5800x?

COST DOES NOT REALLY MATTER WHEN IT COMES TO CHOOSING BETWEEN THEM.

I am only looking at gaming performance mainly. Whichever CPU performs better in gaming is the one I want.

Gigabyte 3080 Gaming OC keeps crashing

    Posted: 08 Oct 2020 07:17 AM PDT

I've underclocked by -100mhz to no avail. Reinstalled drivers, ensured my 2x 6+2 cables are snug on both my Rm750x gold PSU and GPU.

Funny thing is, I've had the card for almost three weeks and it was working flawlessly until yesterday. I don't understand, if anyone could shed some light that would be greatly appreciated

    Other builds like Apex Spectrum?

    Posted: 08 Oct 2020 07:59 AM PDT

    Hello,

I fell in love with the Apex spectrum build from Maingear, with RGB liquid cooling pipes. I decided to buy a system but when I went to their site I saw no option for Apex Spectrum. I even asked their support about it and they told me they discontinued that type of system because of difficulty in manufacturing the custom components.

So I was wondering if anyone know somebody/company that does builds like the Apex Spectrum.

Where is the GPU on a Tomahawk B350?

    Posted: 08 Oct 2020 08:30 AM PDT

Hi guys! I might have a conflict between my Nvidia Geforce GTX1060 and the onboard GPU on my motherboard (a Tomahawk B-350 MS-7a34. I'm trying to run a plugin in Ableton Live (music making program), but it keeps crashing Ableton Live - and the maker of the plugin says it might be a conflict between the GPU onboard my motherboard and the GTX. Even though only the GTX appears in the list of devices in device manager on Windows, I want to try to disconnect the power from the onboard GPU (if I can even do that) to rule out there being a conflict between the onboard GPU and the GTX.

Here's a picture of the motherboard:
    https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B350-TOMAHAWK/Gallery#lg=1&slide=1

Can anyone tell me where the GPU is on this thing? And also, if it's not listed in devices on Windows, can it still somehow be active?

    Cheers!

    GPU/Boot Problems

    Posted: 08 Oct 2020 02:20 PM PDT

Hello all! I have recently bought a pre-built PC from a small company. Nothing was set up including windows which was no big deal just had to take out the graphics card and get everything set up before going on with my life. However, when I boot up, it takes multiple attempts to get the thing going. Once I do though everything runs great! I'm just wondering if I'm doing something wrong while it's booting or shutting down.

Sometimes I'll get an error message asking me to restart, I do and it boots just fine. Other times it'll just be a black screen like the GPU isn't doing it's job. Occasionally the computer will boot up just fine with no problems at all.

Anything will help, maybe I'm doing something very wrong. I should have also mentioned I'm new into the PC world and don't know a whole lot about hardware but I'm very willing to learn!!

    Thanks, uttechm

RAM upgrade: is more Mhz = better performance?

    Posted: 08 Oct 2020 10:33 AM PDT

Originally, I planned to go with a 3600Mhz CL16 RAM, but lately, I start to see RAM sticks with much faster speeds, like 4000Mhz, 4200Mhz or even 4600Mhz! Is it worth it to sacrifice 2 CL latency points for RAM that is much faster?

I only game on my machine, no content creation. price isn't an object, if there is a small improvement I'll go for it.

edit: I originally planned *CL14* RAM

Are ryzen 5000 series worth it?

    Posted: 08 Oct 2020 10:13 AM PDT

Ryzen 7 5800x will be 450$ and ryzen 5 5600x will be 300$ they showed us that ryzen 9 gets 20 precent increase but they didn't show us if it's was worth it to buy ryzen 5 5600x over ryzen 7 5800x for budget gamers. What do you think about rendering too? It got single vote speed increase but will ryzen 5 5600x be worth it for 3d rendering?
