What's with the shortage of good notebook LCD panels?

    Posted: 08 Oct 2020 01:37 PM PDT

This is not a 'what do I buy' question but rather a question about wholesale market conditions leading to the lack of supply for FHD LCD panels.

I've noticed that FHD notebooks with good quality LCD panels are virtually unavailable these days. A few years ago, bright 15.6" IPS LCDs that covered 90%+ of the sRGB color gamut were pretty much ubiquitous. Now, the best that's available in this size class--at any reasonable price point--seems to be dim IPS screens that barely cover 50% of the sRGB gamut.

What's happened to LCD manufacturing that has caused quality LCD panels to be withdrawn from the market?

Can we talk about Nvidia’s lie of “unprecedented demand?”

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 01:15 AM PDT

3dfx and Voodoo both sold over 1 million cards. In 1997. Sales should be way higher than that in 2020.

Did Nvidia even ship 1 million 3080 cards? If so, then I want proof, because I've seen some parsed data that shows around 1500 shipped globally...

Edit: source 1.3 years of sales before demand was even a thing

Why are there rumours of PCIe 5.0 coming out on Intel platforms in 1-2 years when PCIe 4.0 just came out?

    Posted: 08 Oct 2020 07:06 PM PDT

Consumer mobos supporting PCIe 4.0 just came out this year. PCIe 4.0 SSDs just came out this year. There are already very few use cases where PCIe 4.0 provides and advantage over PCI 3.0, so why are we already talking about PCIe 5.0 in the consumer market? Am I missing something here?

Is it just a case of companies trying to get ahead of one another with "bigger numbers" or is there an actual technical reason for why this is happening?
