    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Building a pc for a dying friend.

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 06:51 AM PDT

Hello to everybody, i am looking for advice. I am a gamer but not so tech savy, i build a system every 5/7 years and play with it, so i can understand what it will be written but i am not knowledgable enough to build a system on my own, expecially since i'm not up to date with components and such.

A friend of mine is dying, a sad brain cancer diagnosis at 35 years old, life expectancy of, more or less, 18 months if nothing changes with radiations and chemo. We are heartbroken.

he asked to me, since he knows that i am a gamer, to build a rig for him, so he can play games during the grim weeks he has in front of him, he has a decent budget, 1700 / 2000 euros or dollars, around that amount; the target is to play 60+fps at normal resolutions, no 4k or such... maybe, if he manages to get some more money to spend on this, some ultrawide monitor.

i think i will build it around a 3080, or 3070 if i am able to get it in enough time to be.. worth. Biggest doubt is around what kind of CPU and Motherboard it's best-for-value at this time, if AMD or Intel CPU and which one around the 400$ mark, the same for the motherboard, which needs to have a M2 slot ; everything else like case, PSU and such are within my reach and will come along after this information, i hope.

I thank everybody who will read this, obligatory english is not my native language and forgive my mistakes.

    I waited for 3070 when i watched 3080 madness i bought rx580!

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 04:51 AM PDT

I had all the parts from august the only missing part is the gpu i was looking for an rtx 2060 but i decided to wait and after the announcement of the new ampere i was excited to get a 3070

but the bad launch of 3080 make me realise as someone from a third world country that there is no chance for me to get any ampere gpus this year.

so i bought a used rx580 atleast i can use my system and it will be a small lose when i will upgrade in future

SSD just died but my windows 10 .iso is in the HDD...

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 10:10 PM PDT

so i think my 128gb intel SSD just died since i already swapped out the SATA cables, power connectors etc and it wasn't working at all (happened in the past but plugging and unplugging usually solved my problem).

I know how to use USB to install and set up windows on a new SSD that I just ordered but the issue is that I havent mounted my flash drive with the .iso files that are stuck in my HDD and to make matters worse the product key is somewhere is also there in the readme.txt file.

any ways to get into that HDD without windows? i have a mac laptop if that helps.

You ever just be building your first rig and choosing parts, everything is going smooth...

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 05:35 AM PDT

But then you get to the case, and caveman brain goes 'ooga booga i can get a cheap case, ooo lookit this one its got rgb on the front panel'

No, 2 months younger me. The airflow is gonna suck when it has a completely solid front panel and intake at the bottom.

Not that I need the airflow right now, but when I based my entire rig around upgradability later on...

For reference, the case in question is an Aerocool Cylon RGB

    NVME worth it?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 05:35 AM PDT

Im planning on putting together a new system from scratch early next year so Im in the planning stages right now. I plan on getting NVME for my boot drive, cus low storage options are relatively cheap, my question is, is it worth getting an NVME for games ect? I know this might seem like massive overkill to ask, but Im not only thinking of performance, Im thinking of the space and cable management it will save me on top of any reduced load times and transfer speeds Ill get.

Been a while since I build a machine so I need to get back up-to-date.

Edit : Thanks for all the helpful answers guys, given me some stuff to think about for sure!

I'm building my own computer, and as a beginner I thought it's nice to ask for help from the internet. Please help me look at the parts and see which things I should change or it's good like that

Things that I've bought from the list are the case, the powerbox and the SSD from Samsung. Those can't be changed anymore.

And one question about graphic card, is Palit trustworthy?

Best 27" VA 1440p 144hz+ Monitor in the $500 Price Range?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 05:23 AM PDT

So I'm looking for a 27" 1440p 144hz+ VA monitor in the $500 price range. I want minimal amount of ghosting and black smearing, decent backlight bleed, good response times (obviously I don't expect the response times to be on par with TN or even IPS, but good enough for keep up with the refresh rate). Good brightness (above 400 nits), and obviously I want GREAT contrast ratio as that's the entire reason why I'm opting for a VA monitor to begin with so I'm talking at least 3000:1. Oh, and I want it to work with G-Sync and Adaptive Sync without any hiccups.

So far, I've read reviews on quite a bunch of VA monitors but each of them had some sort of a deal breaker that I couldn't come to terms with.

    1. Samsung Odyssey G7 | Flickering issue with Adaptive Sync/G-Sync, Steep curve.
    2. Gigabyte G27QC | A lot of ghosting, mediocre backlight bleed, bad refresh rate compliance
    3. MSI MAG272CQR | Problems with G-Sync, a lot of ghosting
    4. AOC CQ27G1 | Moderate amount of ghosting, problems with G Sync

I've looked at many monitors, I just wanted to list out some of the most common ones and my problems with them.

So far, the only 27" VA monitor I have found that seems to be acceptable in all regards is the ViewSonic Elite XG270QC, which unfortunately is not available in my region. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I'm getting lower fps after changing ram.

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 04:46 AM PDT

    specs:

    cpu: i5-9400f

    mobo: asrock h310m-hdv

    ram: corsair vengeance 16gb 3000mhz (1 × 16gb)

    gpu: gtx 1660ti

I changed the ram to hyperx fury 16gb 2666mhz (2 × 8gb) after the old one died.

I used to play elder scrolls online with an average of 100fps, now it's 40fps. Witcher 3 went from 70fps down to 30fps.

I did this benchmark and it's bad: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/33273591

    how can I fix this?

edit: the problem is that some cpu pins are bent, the guy helping me put too much pressure on the cooler. thank you all for helping!

Bluetooth shut off an PC won't let me turn it back on - it's like it's not even there

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 01:48 PM PDT

    Title.

I have a B450 Aorus Pro Wifi motherboard which has bult in bluetooth that up to this point worked great, but suddenly the bluetooth just shut off and I can't find any easy way to turn it back on and it kind of blinks when I try to open the device manager so I don't know what's going on at all. I don't have my hd audio cable plugged in due to not being able to after I installed the mobo with the way my case was designed so bluetooth is the only way I get audio which means this is actually a rather serious problem.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Do I need the extra 4 pin CPU power for my Ryzen 3700x?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 10:30 AM PDT

I am running a MSI Pro Carbon WiFi x570 mobo. This is my first build and I connected both the 8 pin and 4 psu cables from the mobo to my psu. However, I see that maybe the 4 pin connector isn't necessary because the power draw of the processor is such that the 8 pin power source is more than enough? I don't have any plans to overclock the processor at this point, so would I be OK in disconnecting the 4 pin cable? Thanks!

Hi, I just have a question about upgrade from RTX 2070 SUPER

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 01:44 PM PDT

So, I have RTX 2070 SUPER at the moment and primarely gaming on it. So far I've been playing only on ultrawide 3440x1440 screen and the card runs just fine. But in a week I am planning to buy my first 4k TV and I want to play games on it too. I actually think the TV will be my primary screen for games.

    So I have 4 questions?

    1. Will my RTX 2070 SUPER be enough to run games at 4k for about 2 years (I dont think i would mind playing even on 1800p, but I'll have to see for myself)?
    2. If I sell my card now for about 300 €, will it be worth to buy a new RTX 3080 (about 750 €)?
    3. If I sell my card now for about 300 €, will it be worth to buy a new RTX 3070 (about 550 €)?
    4. Should I sell for about 300 € and wait for a bit to get a better deal? (I am worried that if I wait I wouldn't get a chance to get a card until spring due to coronavirus)

Well I have a really bad headache thinking avout this. So I will be super happy about all the feedback I can get!

    Cheers!

First build - RTX 3070 ready?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 03:57 AM PDT

Hi all, this will be my first build, and I'm looking to use it for gaming and basic office applications. I intend to put in a RTX3070 when available.

I'm hoping it will do 1080p at 75Hz to match the monitor, with some ray tracing on.

Cost in $AUS is currently 1300, and I'm thinking I want to spend $2000 AUS when including the graphics card

What I'm not sure about is whether I've balanced everything correctly, or whether I should be looking for sale prices on RAM, SSD etc. Brands etc seem to all be very similar, but I'm not sure.

    https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/C8dX9G

I also want to check ease of building, I think I've found enough reviews to say this will all go together fairly easily but I wanted to check. I've specifically picked a modular power supply on the basis that those seem to be easier to work with? Plus I found one for what seems like an excellent price.

    Thanks for your help

Will the release of the new consoles affect prices and availability of NVMe SSDs?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 01:39 PM PDT

my gaming PC is pretty old and was planning to build a new one this year probably based around the 3080.

I am no expert at this at all, but I was reading about the new consoles and it seems like they're going to be utilizing their SSDs quite a a bit.

The build I was looking at included a PCIe 4.0 NVMe, but they're really expensive if you want more than 1 TB.

I know you can go on waiting forever and there's always going to be something better, but with these new consoles coming out soon: do we expect to see some more competition in that area really soon and maybe one would be better off waiting until they've been out for a little while? (so I don't have to spend $400 on an SSD)

How to optimize gaming performance and Building A PC; what can I do with $500 in 2020?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 07:44 PM PDT

to start, I am very, very dumb when it comes to this computer hardware stuff.

So, I've depended on this Dell laptop; which honestly serves me well, especially for a laptop, (can play fallout nv on medium) but i want to start playing more complex games maybe, (VR, highest quality nv, the pc only games, etc)

My Pc has 8 gb ram I7-5500U CPU @ 2.4 GHZ and one TB of storage space, 90% unfilled

can anyone elaborate on if those are "good" specs or not?

I have no idea what any of that crap means, besides the ram.

Honestly though, should my PC be doing better for the games I *do* play? am i missing something to make my performance better with what I have? I feel like with NV being a 2008 game that the fact when I put NV on high i see performance problems puts me off, am i doing something wrong?

If it's just not good enough a part of me may want to get something better, how much better could a 500$ pc go compared to the lapop i have now? Where would I start? I heard that genuinely good PCs can't be bought for cheap and that you basically have to make your own, and that terrifies me.

Thank you in advance, I am very ignorant on computers so go easy on the jargon....

Are there any good 1440p, 240hz monitors out there???

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 01:12 AM PDT

I know that people are going to say the G7 which I've been looking at for a while, but I have been struggling to find any other monitor that will even just do 240hz at 1440p. I currently have and enjoy a dual monitor setup with a Dell S2719DGF, which would be the monitor that would stay if I got a second monitor. The G7 isn't exactly meant for a dual monitor setup though, so I would prefer to get it only if there were no alternatives. So are there any other good 240hz 1440p, should I find a good 1080p and just deal with it, or should I wait a yearish to see what comes out to compete with the Samsung?

    NOOB!! First Build!!

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 01:24 PM PDT

    Hi everyone

I want to build my first pc, which will be used for gaming and productivity (video/photo editing) and was hoping to get a bit of feedback on the parts I have picked. I'm unsure whether the new Ryzen or Intel CPUs might be worth the wait, as not sure if the Intel i7-10700K is a good choice of processor.

There were a few concerns I had about the building process as well. I've picked two m.2 SSDs, 500gb for Windows 10, and 2TB for general storage. Will it be easy enough to distinguished between these two SSD while installing Windows 10, or would it be easier to only have the one connected during installation? Also once the build is complete, how difficult is it to setup the pc and install Windows 10 and all the relevant drivers? I'm a complete noob and have been a lifelong Mac user and am used to it all just working so a bit concerned about this part of the build.

Thanks and any feedback would be highly appreciated.

Should I get Windows to my pc or can I wait a bit?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 11:40 AM PDT

As I understand it, if you build a computer you don't have to buy a windows license right away. Since they cost like a hundred bucks I feel like I could wait for a bit if it's worth it. Should I just get it with all my other parts or is it worth skipping for like a month?

Pc won't work after building it

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 11:13 AM PDT

I just built my pc from parts that I ordered, my I've connected everything including a new motherboard, new graphic card, 2 new ddr4 ram (compatible with z390 ud motherboard), with my older GPU (1660ti) and 3 months old cooler,

When I start the pc, it would turn on (you can see the LED brightening up and the RGB ram lightning up), up after it nothing happens.

Any idea what would be the problem so I'd take a peek at would be most helpful, thanks.
