This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

You do not need a 3090

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 02:18 AM PDT

I'm seeing so many posts about getting a 3090 for gaming. Do some more research on the card or at least wait until benchmarks are out until you make your decision. You're paying over twice the price of a 3080 for essentially 14GB more VRAM which does not always lead to higher frame rates. Is the 3090 better than the 3080? Yes. Is the 3090 worth $800 more than the 3080 for gaming? No. You especially don't need a 3090 if you're asking if your CPU or PSU is good enough. Put the $800 you'll save by getting a 3080 elsewhere in your build, such as your monitor so you can actually enjoy the full potential of the card.

Some of us built a PC in these last months to not go insane. Let’s stop the grandstanding and “I told you so” please.

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 08:45 AM PDT

I'll most likely get downvoted for this, but it's pretty exhausting to see the community shitting on each other like it is right now. I've seen so many posts and YouTube videos essentially saying "hahaha you idiots should have waited!" "I bet you feel so dumb right now!" And while yes, I'm sure most of us do, I'd like to remind everyone of the circumstances that were transpiring. Most of us were stuck at home, going on 3-5 months of doing absolutely nothing. Economy spinning out, relations with Chinese supply chains exploding, and a mental state of, "just hold it together man" at best. In the same way a gardener turns to their garden, or a woodworker turns to their bench, I chose to put my energy into a new PC. Yes I knew a new gen of cards was coming out. No, I didn't think the prices were going to be this competitive. But regardless, let's stop shitting on people who had no jobs, no stability, and no clue what the future would look like. Gamers that chose to invest their time on something that would take away the existential dread for a short time. So if your kicking yourself cause you bought a 2000 series, think back to where you were during that time. Was it the project you needed? Enjoy the hell out of that thing. Let's be the community that applauds each other for building a PC and can we please remember why we're all here? To talk shit about console gamers!

First PC build. Should I get RTX 2060 super or wait for 3070/ 3060?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 09:05 PM PDT

I have a laptop but it's failing more and more, really slow, and several years old, so I'm not willing to wait long. It's frequently on BSOD...

My planned build is R5 3600, which doesn't have integrated graphics. The PC is for 144hz 1080p gaming, streaming, and audio/video processing. I'm also not sure if R5 3600 will bottleneck RTX 3070. If I'm gonna wait, should I wait for the 3060? Is there a good chance that'll be on December or next year because that's too long and I'm not willing to wait that much.

I'd also highly prefer a 3rd party, because the founders edition will ruin my color scheme, but I'm not sure how long those will release so I think I might just get the founders edition..

EDIT: Thank you guys. I'm leaning toward the October wait for the 3070 now. It'll be a difficult wait because I don't have anything to use but my ancient semi-dead laptop, but it'll be worth it probably. Based on the other comments rumors, I can't wait for the 3060.

Guys I have made a mistake of buying 1 stick of 16gb ram. Later found out to always go with dual channel. I have an asrock A320M hdv mobo which has only 2 ddr4 slots. What do I do now?

People trying to make 3070 builds y'all are gonna be doing a lot of waiting unless you're lucky enough to get one of the first batches of them.

    Gd time to buy?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 12:31 PM PDT

Hi, I've been playing pc for about 9 years now, never built my own pc though. I'm moving house and my pc being fairy old now has given me the boost to finally taking the leap.

The main question I have is: is now a good, bad, average, time to build/buy a pc? Mainly from a pricing perspective. My buddy says it's a bad time bc prices should drop loads coming up. I'm UK based if that makes a difference.

NVMe drive suddenly disappeared from File Explorer, Disk Management, and Device Manager

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 01:35 PM PDT

Hey y'all, looking for a little help here as my troubleshooting and searches haven't produced a fix so far. Main issue is in the quote block below if you don't need the details!

I recently got a 1TB WD Blue SN550 NVMe SSD that I didn't end up needing. I sold it on OfferUp (unopened) last night and the buyer is having some trouble that I'm trying to assist with.

They're running an Asus ROG B550 motherboard and the boot drive is the 500 GB version of the same NVMe drive (WD SN550) running in the front M.2 slot.

They installed the new 1TB SN550 in the rear slot and formatted it in windows.

After formatting, it showed up in File Explorer in the usual spot, under 'This PC' > 'Devices and Drives', but now it's gone and missing from File Explorer, Disk Management, and Device Manager.

They say it's also not showing the drive in BIOS.

They mentioned that they updated their BIOS but they can't remember if that was before or after the drive went missing.

Their current plan is to remove the main drive and boot to the windows installer USB to see if it recognizes the new one. I suggested flipping the slots but given that it showed up before, this seems to be reaching a bit as a possible fix (this is also sort of a pain in the ass since they already have the motherboard installed and the drive is in the rear slot).

Is there something I'm missing here? Does anybody know of a surefire fix for this?

    Thanks!

    Is this considered GPU sag?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 01:35 PM PDT

I was cleaning some dust out of my PC a few days ago, when I noticed this. It almost looks like my GPU has a small tilt towards the front of the case (to the right of the image). Is this something I should be concerned about? It's an EVGA RTX 2070 Super XC Ultra, if you're wondering. Sorry that the picture isn't great...

Edit: I just noticed another problem. The front tower (right side on image) of my Noctua NH D15 looks like it's very slightly lower than the other one. You can see it in my picture, and it's similar to the issue in this post.

I ruined my brother's PC and need advice for equivalent replacements.

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 04:33 AM PDT

So I goofed up big time, and had a water accident with my brothers desktop and I was probably way too slow to cut the power. We are still troubleshooting but we think the motherboard is a goner, maybe psu too.

Because I'm a student and money is tight we need to work out a replacement solution, where he can get something which is equivalent to the damaged hardware, and I spend as few bucks as possible.

The motherboard in question is the asus b150m a. What in todays market would reasonably fulfill the same specs?

Thank you in advance for your advice!

    Paralysis by analysis

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 02:48 AM PDT

Have you read the sidebar and rules? You betcha

    Intended use for this build?
75% Adobe Creative Suite, Davinci Resolve, Blender, recording, streaming
    25% Gaming

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for?
I would like to do 4k 60 on a TV at some point so HDMI 2.1 was a big factor in GPU selection which is why I've waited for the RTX 30 series to be announced.
I currently don't have the ability to do above 1440p 60hz on my 2x 27" 1440p monitors - one is a colour accurate Dell and the other is a basic ViewSonic.

I do want to go to 144hz (at least) with a larger main monitor but waiting to see what is coming up in the monitor and TV space will I save some dollarydoos. The goal is either something like this sans the extra hardware controllers on the desk. Or selling my cheaper ViewSonic to go for something like this

Budget: $3500 AUD so ~ $2000 USD (A straight conversion doesn't work on currency as we have multiple taxes on top of everything. It's expensive down here yo!)

In what country are you purchasing your parts? Straya

Foreword I've been wanting to build a PC for a while now and squirrelling away the money to build what I want. Last one I built must be going on 15 years now and it's certainly an exciting time to be doing it. I'm in Melbourne Australia and we've had some extensive lockdown orders in place since March and there's no end in sight for us to be out and about. There's some projects I want to work on now that I simply can't do with current hardware available to me as well as some mates who are members of the PC Master Race I would like to join to mix up my down time.
After consuming epic amounts of information and suckling on the teat of the rumour mill for the last 6 months it made a lot of sense to wait until Ampere was official (clearly that was a good choice) but I'm not convinced the jump to Zen 3 will offer quite the performance per dollar increase on the CPU front.

We also have considerable delays with shipping so I'm really not sure when components will arrive after purchasing. I felt like I've been edging for months on building this PC and was feeling it hard in my plums so after too much mine wine a few nights ago and seeing some good prices online I bit the bullet and purchased some of my build. You can see that represented in the table below.

I'm now stuck. Unable to be confident enough to blow the full load and choose CPU, Mobo and Case. I have a friend who will lend me a ROG Strix GeForceR GTX 1060 OC edition so I can post and do my installs and then swap it out when GPU arrives. I'm aware that availability is highly unlikely on the 17th. I'm somewhat loath to buy a cheap CPU and then sell it later. Everything I read to try and help is divided. I need this amazing community to help me!

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please)

    Type Item Price AUD Purchased
    OS Microsoft Windows 10 Pro $29 Y
    MOBO Asus ROG STRIX B550-F Gaming (Wi-Fi) AM4 ATX $329 N
    CPU AMD Ryzen 9 3900x $668 N
    CPU Cooling Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black $177 N
    GPU NVIDIA RTX 3080 1139 N
    RAM Patriot Viper Steel Series DDR4 64GB (2x32GB) 3600MHz CL18 $349 Y
    Hard Drive OS and apps KINGSTON A2000 M.2 2280 NVME 1TB PCLE SSD 2200MB/S $149 Y
Hard Drive Scratch Crucial CT1000P1SSD8 1 TB 3D NAND NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD $139 Y
Mass Storage Seagate Barracuda Internal Hard Drive 4TB $136 Y
Case Phanteks Eclipse P400A Digital ATX Mid Tower Case $159 N
    Total $3493

    Alternatives I'm considering:

    MOBO
    MSI MAG X570 Tomahawk Wi-Fi AM4 ATX Motherboard +$60
    Reasoning USB-C, more PCIe 4 M.2

Case Phanteks Eclipse P500A Digital ATX Mid Tower Case +$60 Reasoning Front USB-C (would only buy if upgrading the mobo)

CPU Cooling Using the included Wraith Prism -$177
I do want to OC the CPU to 4.3/4.4Ghz so I doubt the Wraith will be enough. I do like the idea of an AIO as it will alleviate my air cooler concerns (below) but it's more expensive (+$60–$80 for an NZXT Kraken X63) and has more points of failure.

I'm definitely concerned about the size of the Noctua and the other equivalents such as the be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4. This includes RAM and case clearances. I'm pretty set on a mid tower / smaller form factor but there's no definitive answers I can find.

GPU Big Navi for potentially more VRAM and less power hungry than RTX 3000. Although if I can get my hands on the 3080 I don't think I'll be too fussed.

CPU We are close to Zen 3 Ryzen 4000 being announced but so far all I can glean is that there will be a "20% increase" but there is no indication of when it will arrive here in Australia nor the pricing. The 3900x is at a good price now so unless I can get 3950x performance in Zen 3 at a similar cost then I think I will be ok.

I have a spreadsheet where I've costed out specific components from a mix of online retailers and then did the same build from a single, major online retailer here in Australia and the build came out $1000 more expensive.

    TL:DR
I bought half my PC when drunk and now over analysing things

[Fitting] NH-D15, MSI MPG Z490 Gaming Plus Mobo, in NZXT H510i Case?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 02:10 PM PDT

Hey everyone. I can't find info on the HEIGHT of the MSI MPG Z490 Gaming Plus motheboard, so I don't know if it'll fit with the Noctua NH-15 cooler in an NZXT H510i case. Is anyone able to shine some light on this for me? Anyone ever use these parts for a build and have any fitting issues? Not having luck with pcpartpicker either :( But it doesn't show any incompatibility issues, I just don't think this is something it will be able to catch on its own.

    Thanks guys!

    [RECOMMENDATION] Monitor for GPU (3070)

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 01:49 PM PDT

    Hi there!

I'm looking for help to do an upgrade to my monitor and gpu. I planned to upgrade them months ago, but covid hit hard my savings and I had to postpone it... until now! I'm planning to buy this stuff next month / next two months, so I have enough time to be sure what I wanna buy and look closely to your recommendations!

My actual GPU is quite a standard one: a Gigabyte RX580. It still can handle many things I do but it's beginning to feel quite old. And, as most users here, I'm stunned by new nvidia gen. I think the 3070 suits my needs (in fact, it exceeds them, but I don't plan to change it for 4 years so I'd rather go a bit higher of what I need).

But my monitor... oh my god. I'm quite ashamed to recognize this, but it's just... a Samsung TV. And not even a flashy new one. Of course, if I upgrade my GPU I should go with the monitor as well because it wouldn't make sense. But I'm really lost in the monitor field, and I need help.

**What do I need then?** I need a **27'** monitor (not less) that pairs well with the 3070. It's ok if it has perks like USB and such, but if it's gonna rise the price a lot. I'm planning to go for a **2k resolution** (if this is stupid with this card please explain me why). My budget for the monitor is **300€**, could painly go up to 400€. I'm planning to keep my actual monitor as a 2nd one (I want to use it for work, some software I use goes well with 2 monitors).

I have other concern: **will my PSU handle this card?** I have a Corsair RM750x. It think it's enough but hey, better ask for advice than having a rough time.

I'll leave my other specs just in case they can screw me in other unplanned ways.

MB: MSI x470 Gaming Pro Carbon

    CPU: Amd Ryzen 7 2700x

    PSU: Corsair RM750x

RAM: Corsair RGB Vegeance Pro 16gb (2x8)

    GPU: Gigabyte 580RX

SSD: Samsung Evo 970 Plus + HDD (old one, I even forgot the model)

COOLING: Corsair H100I Cooling + 3 other Corsair LL fans.

Mouse and keyboard are Logitech REALLY old, but they still to their shit very well.

Lots of thanks for your help in advice!

    -EVGA 500 W1 PSU

    -ASRock B540m

I have about 200 dollars to spend and was wondering if I should add or upgrade anything for better performance. I've already purchased a monitor and peripherals. Main uses for this pc are gaming and light video editing for school and stuff, but mainly gaming.

    GSYNC monitor

Help for my near future build

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 12:29 PM PDT

Hey guys, So I have my pc for around 6-7 years now and the new nvidia gpus got me thinking of buying a new pc. I think I might build it around christmas but I want to start my investigation now hehe.

I haven't been inside the market for a while so I need some help. I made this list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6Vsk4n but I don't know if those parts are "the best" for the type of build I'm doing. The GPU would be a RTX 3070. I would use the pc for gaming and for work as I'm a developer (compiling and stuff)

I'm also skeptical abount going for AMD CPU's. Go ahead and make sugestions/changes for the components as well as stating the reasoning behind them!

    Thanks in advance!

Help with motherboard/CPU upgrade for Nvidia's 3080 release

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 10:53 AM PDT

Hey everyone! The release of the 3080 has me excited to upgrade my computer once again, something I haven't felt in quite a while. My motherboard and CPU are still the originals from when I built my computer about 6ish years ago. I'm looking for a mid-high range upgrade for both, but can't seem to figure out what to look at. I've done research on both products, but it has only made me more confused. I was thinking about this for a CPU, but would this be excessive? My largest confusion lies in choosing a motherboard. To me, the names look like alphabet soup and the boards themselves all look exactly the same. Any guidance on what I should be looking for would be greatly appreciated! Here's my current build
