    Simple Questions - August 26, 2020

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Bestbuy sent me the wrong gpu

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 11:18 PM PDT

Bestbuy sent me the wrong gpu but I'm not complaining. I had originally ordered a 2070 super to for my new build, I had just received the package today and to my surprise instead of a 2070 super I had recieced a 2080 super, I'm still really shocked about this and I'm beginning to think its not real, had this happened to anyone else? Edit: this is a 2080 super and not a 2080 ti

Got a 750w Gold PSU, will it be enough for the 3090?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 07:59 AM PDT

Title question essentially. I have seen reports that a 3090 will have a recommended PSU of 850w. If this is the case I would like to get it now since there are reports of a global PSU shortage, and higher watt PSUs could quickly go out of stock or way up in price if this is the case.

For reference the rest of my PC.

    Asus ROG Strix 490-E

    10900K w/Corsair H100i Platinum + 4 additional LL120 fans (total of 6 RGB fans)

    64 GB G.Skill Trident 3600 Mhz

    2x 1TB Samsung NVME

    ASUS ROG Strix 1080ti

    Corsair HX750 Gold PSU (Modular)

Never in a million years would I guess a single GPU+CPU need more than 750w but here we are.

    Upgrading Cpu

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 11:44 AM PDT

I'm currently running a gtx 970 and an rm850x as my gpu and power supply. Looking to upgrade to an intel i7 from my i5 (I don't even remember which i5 I have), budget is pretty much under $350. Which i7 gives me the most bang for my buck? I recently got into vr as well and it is a little stuttery sometimes with my current build. Thanks

You never realize how good it is until it's gone.

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 01:54 PM PDT

I built a PC this summer, and it was a fantastic experience. I learned a lot, I felt a sense of accomplishment when it was complete (are they every fully complete?), and it was an overall upgraded experience using it for work and play.

I thought it was pretty good, but I had no idea.

I'm housesitting for some friends for the next three days, so I just brought along the laptop I was using before my build, so that I could work and still have a computer available. It's pretty much the first time that I've used it since June.

The difference that seemed like "a pretty good upgrade" before now feels like the difference between a horse and buggy and a Ferrari. Having a dedicated GPU vs. integrated graphics, having an SSD vs. an HDD, having a 24" monitor vs. a 14" laptop screen- the list goes on and on.

Distance definitely makes the heart grow fonder, and I will appreciate my PC that much more once I'm back home.

    Newly built PC, Drives issue.

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 01:51 PM PDT

Hello everyone, I recently finished building my first PC and I'm trying to install windows. During the setup process it gives me an error saying it can't find any drives. When I browse my SDD is not showing up. The SDD is connected to one of the Sata cable spots on the motherboard, but theres another spot on the SDD itself for something to be plugged in, is this for power? My PSU doesn't have any cable that would fit into it, and the SDD did not come with one. Do I need a cable to power the SDD, or is there a different issue? Heres my build if that helps at all. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/pMQQXv

Waiting for AMD to release new generation to save some money on my first build?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 07:51 AM PDT

So I did a little research and found out amd were releasing new Gen parts around October. Should I wait until then to buy current gen parts? Is the price drop significant? Thx

Thank you to the reddit for the journey!!

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 10:36 AM PDT

I would like to say thank you for everyone on this subreddit for helping me come far enough to build my own pc after being on this subreddit and wanting to build my own pic for a over a year I was finally able to do so today. So, thank everyone here has helped and I have done my best I really tried to make this as good as I possibly could even though I thought multiple times I broke it and I got scared but in the end I would recommend to anybody to just build there own pc bc it's not even really that hard just study how everyone else does it and follow along. So Thank you everybody for enjoyment I gained with my first pc!

How is this for a budget VR PC?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 10:12 AM PDT

Hey guys, I have a beefier PC that I keep in my room, but my room isn't big enough to play VR in, so any time I want to, I have to take everything apart and move it into the living room. I want to build a cheap, but capable VR PC, and specced this out https://pcpartpicker.com/list/GhJBwh. Would this be decent enough to run games like Blade and Sorcery, and Beat Saber? Any suggestions/changes to the list would be appreciated!

1500$ CAD PC build i'm making for a friend, open for suggestions

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 10:58 AM PDT

He basically only plays league of legends and will sometimes use software like autocad and such.

I'm not sure about the gpu. He has a 1500 CAD budget WITH a 144 hz monitor, and he doesn't know if we will play other games later.

I feel like the 1050 ti is outdated but it's the only one i could fit in his budget that can easily run league at fps

So, please let me know if you see anything that could be improve, I will glady update it.

Which of these monitors should I buy? (1440p 144hz for ~$300)

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 11:05 AM PDT

Hello all! So I've been researching monitors for my pc and I've come down to these two (if you have a better suggestions please drop it). Even though they are listed as FreeSync compatible, I've seen multiple reviews about both of them confirming that they work with G-Sync. So, which of these two monitors should I buy? Please help me out I need your input

    Monitor 1

    Monitor 2

Edit: Looking for IPS panel, so second one is most likely out of the question.

Monitor 3 has now been added.

Really not sure what to go with.

    My computer, for reference: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/hXFYn7

I mostly play Call of Duty, Rocket League, and some Escape from Tarkov.

Edit: is an IPS panel also worth?

    CPU for first time builder

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 02:36 PM PDT

I'm picking parts for a gaming pc, and I am wondering what the main difference is between the AMD Ryzen 5 3600 and the AMD Ryzen 5 2600. My overall price is a little higher than I would like, and I'm wondering if I could save some money here. Thanks

Pulled the trigger over the weekend..... how'd I do?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 10:44 AM PDT

My Snady Bridge i5 build from 2012 was starting to show its age (read: wouldn't run flight sim 2020) so I figured it was time to open up the wallet and build a new machine that would get me through a few more years of gaming. Ordered the parts on Friday night and to my amazement everything arrived yesterday and I threw her together after work.

    • AMD Ryzen 7 3700x
    • 16GB Corsair Vengance RGB Pro DDR4 3200
    • ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon 5700 XT 8GB OC
    • ASUS TUF Gaming X570-PLUs
    • Samsung Evo 970 Plus 1TB m.2 NVME
    • EVGA 650 B5 80 Plus Bronze PSU
    • Corsair 220T Airflow case

Haven't put it through its paces just yet but was able to get it all built, windows installed, and all drivers, chipset, bios updates done. It spent the rest of the night downloading flight simulator. Seems like it's a screamer so far. Windows boots off that drive before the little circle even goes around once. It's stupid. I wanted to build a good PC for under $1500 and came in $100 under budget even after buying windows. I'm happy with it so far and can't wait to game on it later.

    How'd I do?

    3600 or 3300x

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 02:27 PM PDT

    so I have a parts list(https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/ReapeRisagamer/saved/qsqxcf)

the plan for it is to do a mix of programming (mainly python and maybe some C# as I need to improve) gaming and streaming and light video editing so I know the 3600 would be a better cpu for the job but is the extra like £60 worth it??
