This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    My first build!

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 07:15 AM PDT

Finally got the parts to put together my first ever build, I think it turned out great. I 3d printed a sag bracket for the GPU too. Been using heavy ass laptops before this 😂 Pics of build: imgur

    Specs: - Ryzen 5 3600 @ 4.4GHz 1.375v - G.Skill TridentZ Neo CL16 2x16GB 3600MHz - Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite - Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super OC white - NZXT H510 - NZXT Kraken X53 AIO - 1TB Sabrent Rocket - 1TB Crucial P1 - 2TB Seagate Barracuda - Corsair RM750 - CoolerMaster fan hub (board was 1 header short 😭) - Asiahorse cable extensions

Peripherals: (edit, forgot about these) - Logitech G512 Blues - Logitech G403 - Prism+ 165Hz 1ms 27" panel - Intel AX200 WiFi card on the way (actually got a 7260 dual band AC from my friend but windows doesn't recognise it as having Bluetooth, even after updating and reinstalling all drivers, even taking out the pins that disable WiFi and Bluetooth. Any help would be appreciated)

CPU peaks at 80 degrees under load

    GPU not sure, haven't tested

Edit: I tested the system with top fan set to exhaust and intake, exhaust drops peak by 5 degrees. May be better to do intake if you don't have a front mounted AIO or front fans though

What are some things I should do right after booting up my new machine?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 05:39 AM PDT

I put together a great machine, and now I'm wondering what are some additional steps people take. Primarily, I'm thinking about overclocking my CPU -- what tool does everyone use to monitor temps? How do people control their PWM fans and set a good curve?

    Sorry for the basic question.

Can this list get any more optimized or cheaper?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 08:22 AM PDT

Hi, I'm looking to spend around $1000 USD, but would go upwards to 1100 if the cost is justified. I made this but is there any way to get it cheaper or maybe change some things around? Does this need a CPU cooler? Is there a smaller case I could get? is the PSU fine?

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bnFWHB

I found a pre-built for 1099 which is similar.. the only difference is that it has a RTX 2060 Super instead of the 5700 and probably some no name RAM as it doesn't say the brand, just 16GB DDR4 (plus it comes with a mouse and keyboard.. and has some cool lights lol not worried about that tho)

You almost certainly don't need X570

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 01:33 PM PDT

In an effort to keep as many people from wasting as much money as possible... :)

If you're considering an AMD X570 motherboard, ask yourself why.

    • If the answer is "I don't know", you don't need it.
    • If the answer is "the number is higher", you don't need it.
    • If the answer is "PCIe 4.0 support" or "future proofing" and you are not using or contemplating two 4.0 NVMe drives*, or* seven SATA drives*, you don't need it.*
    • If the answer is "better VRMs" ... stay tuned, but it's 99.9% certain that you don't need it.

The differences between X570 and B550 are:

    1. PCIe 4.0 lanes at the chipset as well as the CPU (B550 is CPU only, enough for a graphics card and an NVMe drive),
    2. Up to twelve SATA ports, instead of up to six,
    3. Eight USB 3.2 ports, instead of two (total USB count is unaffected).

That's it. If none of these apply, or will apply, to you - or you don't understand them - you don't need it.

VRMs are getting too much attention at the moment, in my opinion, but in any case, X570 does not automatically mean better power delivery. Look at this table - you will see B550 boards above X570 boards, in some places. For example, the MSI B550 Tomahawk is an S-tier board costing £180, while the X570 Gaming Pro Carbon is a C-tier board costing £40 more.

Unless you are literally overclocking a 3950X on liquid nitrogen, there will be a B550 board that's got you covered.

TLDR - if you're thinking of X570 over B550, unless you need more than one PCIe 4.0 drive, more than six SATA drives, more than two USB 3.2, or you can't find a cheaper B550 board with the same or better VRMs from this table, you don't need it.

After installing two NVMe M2 drives, my PC has started to randomly reboot itself

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 09:49 AM PDT

    What is your Specs list?

    Installation Details:

    • Installed two WD Black SN750 NVMe M2 drives.
    • Replaced two SATA HDD cables for flat plug versions.

    PC Hardware:

    • Windows 10
    • Motherboard
    • 64 GB DDR4 RAM
    • i7-8700k
    • NVIDIA GTX Duke 1070ti 8GB
    • 256GB SSD for Windows
    • 2 x 1TB HDDs

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

PC intermittently rebooted today when my gf was just surfing the web with no errors or blue screen. Two weeks ago it did so as well after my first boot post M2 drive installation. It has been operating normally in between the install and this occurrence. This also never happened prior to the installation at all.

I installed two M2 SSD's and replaced two 90 degree SATA cables for flatter versions to change the orientation of what slots are utilized on my motherboard.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I made sure to move my storage HDD connections into slots that wouldn't be disabled by the M2 drives: M2 slots disabled SATA slots 5 & 6, HDDs moved to slots 3 & 4. My windows dedicated SSD was not touched.

The first time I booted the PC one of my storage HDD's wasn't showing and it randomly would reboot after a few minutes.

Upon checking over my wiring I found a loose connection, fixed it and till today the PC has been problem free with all drives working.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

The CPU and RAM were clocked to higher speeds via the motherboard's "automatic boost" settings. Temps this entire time have stayed within normal ranges with no hiccups.

    Do I need ethernet?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 12:49 PM PDT

I'm planning on building a PC and am confused on whether or not I need a wired connection. I've seen people using antennas and stuff like that for a connection, but I thought that I could just connect to my router wirelessly like a laptop. I have no ethernet ports in my room (where I plan to build the PC) so I'm kind of lost here.

Building new PC - CAD and gaming GPU conundrum

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 12:48 PM PDT

Hi all, this questions is a bit specific but I hope one of you can help. I've been planning to build a new PC for gaming and video editing, so have been waiting for the new Nvidia and AMD GPUs to come out later this year. Recently I've realised there's a possiblilty I might have to do CAD work on this new PC as well and have read that there are special GPUs for this i.e. Nvidia Quadro.

I am wondering whether it is possible/ feasible to build my PC using commercial RTX/ radeon cards to begin with, and then purchase an external quadro GPU and connect via thunderbolt if I need to do intensive CAD work in future.

Essentially I'm wondering if this is OK/ stupid/ weird thing to do :)

I won't be able to fit 2 GPU's in the case as I've already purchased an Ncase M1 ITX.

If anyone needs some more info please let me know.

Found out I have 10 Gbps Internet. Worth getting a motherboard with a 10GbE?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 07:41 AM PDT

Trying to pick a motherboard for a new PC. I was looking into the options and there's only 3 X570 motherboards that support it, and they're all really expensive. Also considering getting a seperate LAN card with a cheaper motherboard. Is it worth getting for the 10G?

Wanting to switch from Xbox One X to PC...trying to learn as much as possible before I invest.

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 07:10 AM PDT

Hi everyone! Although I wouldn't consider myself a very intense gamer (I basically play only FIFA and Fortnite and I'm not very good at either), I have decided that investing in a PC might be worthwhile. However, instead of buying a pre-built system, I thought it might be useful and perhaps better to learn what it means to build a computer and how to do it. I am excited to switch to PC for a number of reasons: I would love to mod FIFA as there are some encompassing mods out there that seem to make up for the lackluster improvements I find year over year, I would like to play fortnite on keyboard and mouse, I really want to play fall guys :), I do video editing from time to time that really slows down my Mac, and I'm looking to up the quality of my gaming experience from the 1080p (more an issue of my monitor) 60 fps that Xbox offers. My biggest question is regarding a graphics card. It is hard for me to compare via youtube the benefits of 1440p 144fps gaming vs 4k ~60fps gaming. I was recommended the RTX 2070 super, and it seems like it could handle either one of those setups. Would I be able to set games to ultra quality or high quality (also, I'm a little confused at what that even means)? Is 16gb of RAM okay? How much does a good CPU matter? I am so excited to learn as much as I can and to start this journey...even as a classics major in college, the thought of looking at a manuscript or inscription in greater detail seems cool :) Thanks in advance for all the help; I'm really starting from 0 so any advice is very meaningful.

Tl;dr I want better graphics than my XBOX one X and don't know whats good and what's overkill.

    5 beeps upon startup

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 12:09 PM PDT

For some reason my pc has started to boot up with 5 beeps. Along with the 5 beeps, there is a red light that appears in the motherboard but I don't know why. What is weird however is that if I restart after the initial boot up, there aren't any beeps and the red light disappears. I don't know what the problem is and would like some advice. I'm an amateur so please provide details and explanations where possible.

Just bought an SSD and i have a few questions.

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 12:15 PM PDT

So, i set up a pen drive to install windows, how do i make it install on my ssd once i plug it? Should i erase windows completely from my HDD?

Can i just open my pc and plug it in without worrying about any static issues?

Will everything be ready for me to plug it in once i open it?

    Thank you in advance.

    Sanity check before building

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 12:39 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

Building a new computer when the 3000 series cards come out. Started putting together what I want so I can order before if items go on sale. No specific budget, but I am nearly at the top of what I want to spend (with GPU this build will be around $3k). If there is something I can upgrade on that would give significant improvement, let me know and I will take a look. This is what I have right now (prices are Canadian):

    https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/6xDCGc

Obviously no graphics card, but I plan to put in whatever is the best card that isn't a Titan equivalent. I have already ordered the case and ram since they were on sale. Hoping that I will be able to front mount my AIO with the tubes down (correct way). The tubes length are 450 mm compared to others that are 400 mm, so hoping I will be good. Plan to replace the case fans with the be Quiet! fans listed. Might also replace the front panel of the case with the mesh panel if I can find it.

Does anybody think waiting for Zen 3 to come out is worth it? They keep repeating that they still plan to launch it this year, but I get the feeling it will be November/December. Plan was to have the build ready for CP2077, but it could still be a month or two until I could get a Zen 3 chip after they are released. Would the upgrade be that worth it?

Let me know what you guys think of my build and if everything is compatible. PCPartPicker gave no issues, so I think I'm good (by the way, thank the heavens for this site. Extremely useful)

    Build for programming

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 12:18 PM PDT

    Hello folks.

    So, here´s the thing:

My wife asked me to build her a PC for her job, wich is programming (back end, Java, Python), some engineering, and DevOps stuff.

She has a laptop but is pretty slow for the job, so i made some research and i ran into a dilemma: People in this line of work do love Mac. They choose to use Mac over powerful PCs. So, do i build her a good PC or do i tell her to buy a Mac?

I´m pretty confused about this. Why is Mac so popular in the dev world? What kind of build would match a Mac?

Thanks in advance, and sorry if this sounds stupid.

    Please help I am lost

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 02:24 PM PDT

I am trying to make a pc that can run games at 1440p and 60fps. I am also going to get a gsync monitor. What build would be good for that? I posted to r/buildapcforme and no one responded. I have 16gb ram, an nvidia gtx 1060, and an intel i5 6600k. Maybe one of the parts I already have is good enough to run these specs? I have no idea what the potential of my current parts is. Thanks!

    Motherboard compatibility

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 02:22 PM PDT

Hey guys. Its my first time building a PC. I ordered a GigaByte b450M DS3H https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07FWVJSHC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 from amazon and a Ryzen 5 3600. From the amazon site it says that it will support 1st/2nd gen ryzens, but from their official site, it says that they now support 3rd gen ryzens. Would I still need a 2nd gen ryzen cpu to update the BIOS? thanks!

Built a Custom PC a few months back

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 02:20 PM PDT

Figured I'd share it before all the parts are replaced later this year. I have some of the fans mounted backwards for the aesthetic, and the all white psu extension cables with white combs I ordered from ensourced didn't fit my psu and customer service was unresponsive so I just rocked these messy ones.

    My first PC build

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 02:14 PM PDT

Got myself a Ryzen 5 3600 with the stock cooler, Asus b450m-k motherboard, tforce ram 2 sticks of 8gb running at 3000mhz, gtx1650 zotac low profile gpu cause low key got scammed on it tell you more about it later, a 240gb ssd, aerocool lux 750wat power supply, all in an aerocool shard. Build is kinda budget got all this for around 750 dollars I got scammed on the GPU since I bought eveyrhing and totally forgot the GPU so I had to go with that got a beracuda 2tb HDD coming and I think that's all case only came with one fan added the two red ones since my brother had them around connected them with molex since I only have 2 fan pins or whatever on the motherboard, thinking about putting the original fan on top of the CPU as an outtake and adding another red fan on the back for outtake and the 2 in front as intake. What do you guys think ?

Can anyone recommended a GPU for an i5 3330?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 02:12 PM PDT

Currently my brother has an i5 3330, 16gb memory and a 1050ti. Money is tight and he cant really afford to upgrade the cpu (he'd probably have to upgrade the motherboard too). I've been looking at the 1660 but im not sure how much of a bottleneck the cpu would be. He plays, warzone, Dayz, overwatch and others. He seems to be hitting 60 but cannot maintain it, any ideas if the 1660 is worth it?

    Thanks
