    Simple Questions - August 24, 2020

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 05:16 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

The amount of dust that catches on the front mesh of my Phanteks P400A is alarming.

    Pc upgraded after 6 years!

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 03:47 AM PDT

Finally decided to upgrade my PC after 6 years of having essentially the same rig, a few bits have been changed here and there like the case but the core of the pc was still the same. But now after finishing university and getting my degree I decided to splash some cash and upgrade my rig. My old specs were: AMD FX8350, 16GB 1600MHz Ram, Gigabyte Ultra Durable Motherboard, Radeon R9 290x 2Gb. After spending about £550 on upgrades and some help from this page as well as my dad I finally built my new and improved rig!! New Specs: Ryzen 5 3600, 16gb corsair vengeance 3200MHz, Asrock B450m steel legend, MSI GTX 1660 Super 6gb. Just want to sa thanks to those who help people with their builds on a daily basis! MS Flight 2020 - Performance across a range of PC's (Low to High end, CPU focussed)

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 05:29 PM PDT

Much has been said about the performance of MS Flight 2020 and what system might be best placed to run it. With a couple of systems at my disposal I thought I'd set out to work out what you actually need to run this sim well.

TL;DR: MS Flight 2020 runs remarkably consistently across a wide range of hardware showing the same performance (about 40fps) and problems (Stutters, lag, very low frame rates on occasion) regardless of the system. It does NOT appear to be hugely CPU bound, and whilst it will make full use of a good GPU it's not terribly hard on those either. It is not fully utilising either CPU or GPU, or even RAM, much of the time therefore I can only ascertain that it is single core speed bound and cannot utilise more than 4 cores at present - possibly due to using DX11.

    The testing regime:

I rigged up a number of systems and 2 scenarios:

    Scenarios:-

    • Takeoff from Heathrow in a 747 This appears to bring out the worst in FS2020, with stuttering when the plane sits on the runway. It smooths out once the aricraft climbs however.

    • Bush flight over the Balkans This is a smoother experience using a light aircraft, but taxes the GPU with some low level scenery.

    Systems:

    • Ryzen '3300X 3100' - 16Gb 3000Mhz Ram - GTX 1660 Super - 1080p High settings. I disabled the best and worst cores on my 3600 to mimic 3100 performance. This system ran remarkably well, showing acceptable performance most of the time. Even in this system CPU was not fully utilised, showing 40-50% most of the time. GPU usage started low but maxed out at altitude. There were some heavy stutters particularly in the heathrow scenario, but it was still wholly playable.

    • '3300X 3100' - 16Gb 3600Mhz Ram- 1660 Super - 1080p High. This system represents a ryzen 3100 with optimised ram and a decent overclock. It showed slightly higher performance particularly in the 'Balkans' scenario. The ugly 1% lows were mostly gone and the game played smoothly. Again neither CPU nor GPU were fully utilised much of the time.

    • Ryzen 3600 - 16GB 3600Mhz - 1660 Super - 1080p High. This system provided fluid performance again with 22FPS 1% lows and 48 FPS average over the balkans, 33FPS average (and worse lows) at Heathrow. I consider this a sweet spot for 1080p FS2020 proving you don't need excessively expensive hardware to enjoy the sim on high settings with very consistent and playable framerates.

    • i7-9700K Stock - 32Gb 3000Mhz Ram - RTX 2080ti - 3400x1440p Ultra This system I consider a good representation of the 'recommended' spec for the game. The GPU is well matched to the resolution even on ultra settings, and it does not become GPU bound until high flying with long draw distance and plenty of cloud (generally around 40Fps at this point). It still exhibits some heavy stutter particularly at the start of a flight (see 1% lows, they're no better than the Ryzen).

I ran each of these scenarios for several minutes, logged data from sitting on runway to a stable level flight at altitude.

Results Quick and dirty graph of results

From messing around with other configurations (i.e. 1080ti at 3440x1440p, high settings, much the same results as the RTX 2080ti on ultra) the experience is very consistent: You won't get very high frame rates, either CPU or GPU limits you. Lowering Graphics settings does little for performance since the GPU is mostly under utilised anyway. You won't get rid of the occasional bad stutter - I've seen every CPU from i7-4770K to a Ryzen 3950X do exactly the same on Youtube. High end CPU's sit at 20% utilisation - a shame for people who've paid out for top tier systems to run this as they won't be having much of a different experience to anyone on more modest hardware.

I have seen some reports of removing live weather and traffic improving frame rates but didn't see a huge impact myself at a busy airport scenario.

It appears, for now, that there's some serious optimisation to be done. CPUs need to be much better utilised, it's rare to see any CPU achieve over 50% ulitisation but some cores will be maxed out. Even GPU's aren't overly taxed, a GTX 1660 Super provides an excellent experience at 1080p (no doubt aided by the lower frame rates). You'd expect an RTX 2080ti to choke at high resolution on Ultra, but it reports under utilisation most of the time. Same with a GTX 1080ti.

    Conclusions:

CPU - A Ryzen 3600 is a sensible start point and more than capable of running the game acceptably well. You will not buy a huge deal more performance with a very high end part due to the engines refusal to leverage more cores.

RAM 16Gb appears to be plenty for this sim but I have seen reference to bandwidth being important. I never saw memory use exceed 14GB even in complex situations and high settings. I'd Recommend 16GB of speed optimised ram if you're on a budget, 32Gb if you can affford it. I have no doubt mods will increase ram usage in future.

GPU This sim isn't a GPU killer despite it's looks and reputation. A 1660 Super/5600XT or better will suffice at 1080p. 1440p should be well supported with an RX 5700XT or RTX 2070 Super. A RTX2080 Super will run 1440p ultrawide well. Again, there's optimisations to be made here because GPU's routinely report under utilisation depending on the game environment.

SSD Yeah, get an SSD. It's a big game (100+Gb) and load times are poor even with a fast NVMe SSD.

I hope this gives anyone looking to build a system for MS Flight 2020 a bit of insight into whay you need to focus your money on, but also a bit of expectation management if you're not getting buttery smooth framerates - I don't believe anyone is right now!!

A small clarification about M.2 devices

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 01:35 AM PDT

Hi all, I don't post here a whole lot anymore, but I feel like there's a need to clarify the meaning of M.2 as well as SATA and NVMe since I see these terms being conflated all the time.

M.2 is merely a form factor, similar to 2.5" found in ssds, or 3.5" hdds. Other than that M.2 does not give any indication of the protocol of the drive and therefore the performance.

SATA and NVMe, unlike M.2 are different protocols of data transfer. It is possible to have both a SATA and NVMe M.2 ssd, yet I find people often saying: 'I have an M.2 ssd!', which doesn't really give an indication of what sort of drive they are actually using performance wise, since that drive could be both SATA or NVMe. Usually what they mean to say (not all the time however), is: 'I have an NVMe drive!' but it seems like the distinction between M.2 and NVMe isn't very well understood on the whole. Hopefully that changes with this post :)

Tl;dr: M.2 is a form factor, SATA and NVMe are data protocols which are more relevant to the performance of the drive than it being an M.2

After wanting a PC for 10+ years, I finally completed my setup today!

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 12:55 PM PDT

Ever since I was in high school, I've always wanted to have a tower PC. However, my parents never let me have one because they oppose gaming and so I've always been stuck gaming 30 fps low settings on 500$ laptops and 15$ mice. This past year, I got my first real job as a Software Developer and so I finally was able to build the PC I've always wanted with a nice setup!

You guys helped me out way back when with no judgement

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 02:32 PM PDT

Two Christmas's ago I asked for help building a pc and you guys went all out for me with tons of great advice and support. I felt super welcome here and very grateful.

Thought I'd come back and let you guys know my now 15 year old son has since sold his PS4, and has no plans to buy the PS5, and has saved up as much as a teenager with no self control can and bought himself a Radeon RX 5600 XT and an absurd amount of RGB fans obviously.

So thanks for everything guys, you were a huge help in my hour of need.

First PC build in a long time

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 07:30 AM PDT

Completed my first build in over 15 years this weekend!! https://imgur.com/gallery/HbHG45T - AMD Ryzen 9 3950x on an MSI MEG unify x570 board with 128GB of RAM, MSI GeForce RTX 2080 Super, NZXT AIO. In a Fractal Design Meshify S2 chassis. It's a big chassis but I want to give myself room to grow and potentially watercool in the future. I'm actually pretty happy with how it turned out and it's running great. I have it running on Linux (Pop!_OS) with Windows dual boot and so far it's running really well.

    1660 Super for 1440p 144hz?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 07:07 AM PDT

I purchased a 1660 super oc model for my 22" 1080p monitor. I figured this would be plenty for my games, but then I was able to snag the View Sonic 1440p 144hz monitor that was posted here this weekend for $260.

So, Will the 1660 super be enough for this monitor? I can return the 1660 super and afford to upgrade to a regular 2060. Am I going to need the 2060 for 1440p 100 FPS+? I don't need to use the full 144hz since I have been gaming at 75hz for the last decade. 100 hz in 1440p would be a huge upgrade.

Games: WoW, LoL, SC2, Skyrim, I don't do much FPS and prefer open world, RPG or real time strategy / action games. I might snag the new Assassin's creed for PC instead of PS4 or PS5.

Edit: Thanks for all the feedback. Looks like a 2060 won't cut it either. I've done some pricing and looked at my budget and $400 is really pushing it, but I found a MSI 2070 at Newegg for under $400 before taxes https://www.newegg.com/msi-geforce-rtx-2070-rtx-2070-ventus-gp/p/N82E16814137504?Description=rtx%202070&cm_re=rtx_2070-_-14-137-504-_-Product&quicklink=true . I can't afford the super, but I should be able to handle this on the credit card.

User Benchmark shows the regular 2070 slightly out performing the 5700 XT and has a smaller power draw with less heat generated and is only $20 more. I am going to go that route. Thanks for all the help and input guys. Great community.

    RTX 3070 and Ryzen 5 3600

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 06:54 AM PDT

I just want to do a hypothesis since this has been annoying me lately, let's go with the rumors about the 3070 having the performance of a 2080 super, but with raytracing power 2-4 times of 2080ti, I know it would be a bottleneck but how big will it be? and how would it affect performance? (I'm gonna play on 1080p for a while then switch to 1440p) I'm mainly focused on the game cyberpunk 2077 I want to play maxed out with full RTX and dlss 2.0 on (would I be able to do this on 1080p and 1440p?) and how would the cpu affect this? you can check out the wccftech report on the cyberpunk 2077 preview performance, but remember the game has taken a delay for bug fixing and optimization, thank you.

    1st build...Mobo and/or RAM issue on startup

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 03:36 PM PDT

First time builder: Ryzen 7 3600 Asus ROG Strix B550-i RTX 2080S

My issue seems to be memory related - I'm getting the orange QLED light indicating there is a RAM issue. I'm using 2x 16GB Corsair DDR4 3200 sticks and my system won't boot up with both installed. I removed one and it boots and runs fine with either 16GB single stick in the B1 slot, but when I try to put the 2nd stick in the A1 slot I keep getting the orange QLED error light on the Mobo and "no signal" to the display. Each single stick also doesn't work alone in the A1 slot (with B1 empty). The fact that either DIMM stick works when placed in the B1 slot makes me think the stick itself isn't the issue.

The machine runs fine on just the single 16GB stick in B1 but I'd like to have 32GB of memory. Other than removing/swapping the sticks, are there any obvious fixes I'm missing?

If the problem is indeed the Mobo and the A1 slot is fried/unusable, it seems I have 2 options to get to 32GB: 1) Exchange the Mobo for a new one and rebuild. 2) Keep my otherwise working setup and get a single 1x 32GB stick.

If there are no fixes, I am leaning towards #2, particularly because I built this in a very small case (NZXT H210i mini) and getting everything installed correctly in the right order, fitting the fans, and getting cables plugged in was rather difficult and I'd prefer not to start over from scratch when I have a (mostly) working machine. However I've read that if you want 32GB of RAM, 2x16 rather than 1x32 is the better configuration... so I'm looking for advice on how best to proceed!

GPU temps dropped by 10C after removing hard drive cage.

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 12:53 PM PDT

I have a Thermaltake H15 Versa case and it comes with a hard drive cage that blocks airflow from the front fans.

I was getting up to 85C with my MSI Armor RX 580, and after removing it I get from 68-71C under full load. It made a huge difference in noise. I screwed the SSD to the side of the case and moved the hard drive to the optical bay.

If you have trouble with high temps, you should try this!

Should I buy a UPS power supply for my PC?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 08:06 AM PDT

My apartment has questionable wiring, and I've noticed things like if I turn on and off a high power device like a heater, it will cause (what I think is a voltage spike) the TV to flicker on and off, etc. Im less worried about power outages than I am about having "dirty" power going to my pc and potentially causing issues. This is a link to the one I am looking at right now.
MY PC has a 500w Power supply and under load it doesn't draw more than about 400w.

    Opinions on build

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 01:41 PM PDT

Hello, first time building a computer (my first one was a prebuilt)

    Some things:

    • My usage will be a little bit of everything. Programming, 3D stuff (modeling, rendering, 3D programming) and gaming.
    • I would prefer an AMD CPU
    • Another thing is that I would prefer a quad memory channel system but that path increases very fast the cost (If you have anything on your mind please let me know)
    • A silent computer would be something that I would like to have (Not crazy silent, but the more silent the better).

Here are some parts that I came up with:

Case: Be Quiet PURE BASE 600 Window

    CPU: Ryzen 9 3900X

Motherboard: Asus TUF Gaming X570-Plus (WI-FI)

PSU: Be Quiet STRAIGHT POWER 11 850W Platinum (I know an overkill but it is a safe and future proof option)

    RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V 64GB DDR4-3200MHz

GPU: I have aside one ARMOR RX 580 8G which is fine for me for now.

I will also reuse my current display and storage devices.

I was considering the Ryzen 9 3950x CPU but on a dual channel system I am not sure if it is worth it.

Also something tells me that the RAM choice is not optimal. I would be willing to pay slightly more for this in case I would get good enough improvements.

Please give me your feedback on this build. I am mostly interested on your feedback for the parts that I am going to purchase for now. Also some tips for other minor things that I might need to buy (i.e. cables, etc) The links are for reference purposes, not the actual places I am going to buy the parts

Finally your opinion whether it is a good time now to build a PC or should I wait new releases?

EDIT: Actually is the PSU a safe and future proof option in case I get a better high-endish GPU later?

Is the RX 5700XT a safe GPU choice now?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 02:53 PM PDT

I'm building my first PC, mostly for simulation games and 100+ FPS at 1080p (yeah it's overkill, that's what I want :) ) but I've read that there were numerous issues regarding drivers when this card launched regarding drivers and black screens, etc. Are the drivers stable now or should I look for an alternative?

Also, what would be an applicable alternative? I'd like to stay in the same ballpark price range.

Need help buying PC for my step son

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 04:05 PM PDT

So my wife let me know our son needs a desktop to do work on, money is tight these days since layoffs. Im not sure what is the best budget PC for someone to do their schoolwork on ,

Forgive me if this is the wrong place to ask, but with money tight my budget is about 500 for a PC including monitor , i can get cheap peripherals on amazon. If it is unrealistic i understand.

I can maybe go up another $100.

If there is a faq or wiki where the best budget parts are listed , if someone could direct me.

Could go b550 but i dont want to go zen2 so close to zen3 release.. i think

Guess we wait a few weeks for benchmarks..

Helping Brother Build a new PC - Video Card Question

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 01:38 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

With the help of this subreddit I was able to successfully build my first PC 2 years ago, and it's been great. My brother is looking to upgrade after about 8 years and I told him I want to help!

Here's the link to his build idea so far: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rByCGc

He has plenty of RAM that he will be transferring over but here's my main question: The video card on that list is one that his friend is mailing him.

I have questions about the performance he is going to get out of that thing. Is it worth it at all to build a PC around that card? Is there an easy way to build a PC around that card for the time being while also being capable of swapping out for a specific more modern card after he has seen how that thing runs?

Interested in opinions and thoughts here - thanks!

I was wondering how it fares against other GPUs in other games. I also don't know if there are any other graphics cards that could be a better bang for my buck. Any help would be appreciated!
