This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Built Our First Ever PC Thanks To This Subreddit !!!

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 03:14 PM PDT

I would like to formally thank this subreddit for your guy's help with creating my first ever PC. Shoutout to u/redditenmo for suggesting the parts. Parts as follows:

CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Pro. Motherboard - GB B550M DS3H Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard Memory - OLOy 16 GB DDR4-3600 CL18 MEMORY Storage - ADATA XPG GAMMIX S5 1TB M.2-2280 NVME SSD Video Card - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER 8 GB Video Card Case - Cooler Master MasterBox MB320L ARGB MicroATX Mid Tower Case Power Supply - Corsair CX (2017) 650 W 80+ Bronze Cerified ATX Power Supply

You saved me from purchasing a a way too overpriced PC from offerup that was not as powerful and more expensive and then suggested the exact parts to just build my own PC. It was the GREATEST DECISION because not only was I able to build a PC from it, I learned so much valuable information in a short amount of time about the hardware in computers.

I created a video of building the actual PC with my girlfriend and we had a lot of fun making it as well. Many, many thanks again.

Check it out if you have time !!! We really struggled because it was our first time...so some parts may make you cringe because of it.

Curious why motherboards still don't have bluetooth as a standard feature

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 08:05 AM PDT

In 2020, we still need to attach dongles to have bluetooth connectivity in desktops while there are so many bluetooth peripherals coming out especially in the last years. All motherboards provide built-in ethernet, sound card solutions while bluetooth is still some tiny dongle that you need to sacrifice a USB slot for. Not to mention horrible bluetooth drivers and interface that usually cause problems in both linux distros and windows. It's like they want to standardize bluetooth as wireless connectivity, but at the same time they want to keep it exclusive to specialized devices (consoles, notebooks etc). Many hardware manufacturers need to provide their special wireless dongles with their products just for that reason, which is another wasted USB slot. Buying a wireless controller? Sacrifice a slot. Buying a wireless mouse? Another slot. Is there a reason behind this?

Is the Ryzen 9 3900x overkill? Is it worth it in my situation?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 06:50 AM PDT

Just started to get into building. I have a budget of around 2000 CAD or 1550 USD.

    Here is my partpicker list:

    https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/jmPR27

I plan on doing some more gaming, video/photo editing and rendering, Elgato recordings, maybe streaming and various other less significant things.

I hear gaming performance becomes stagnant after the R5 3600x which would save me a nice amount of money but as I said I plan on doing those other things. Id also like good longevity, something future proof and upgradeable.

    Any notes for me? Thanks

    Will an i7 6700 bottleneck a 3000 series card?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 09:24 AM PDT

    Hello,

I'm planning on upgrading my GTX 1080 to one of the new 3000 series cards. I currently have an i7 6700 and I've read mixed things online about whether this CPU is too old for the RTX 2080TI. If I want a 3000 series card (likely 3080) do I have to upgrade my CPU?

For context, the most intensive thing I do is play games on a 1440p 144hz monitor.

Ryzen 3900X + 2070 Super build not booting randomly after 6 months

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 11:03 AM PDT

I've had this build working great for around 6 months, until this morning when I came in to use it and the power was on, fans were running, but no output was coming to the monitor.

    Specs:

    • MSI X570 Gaming Edge
    • Ryzen 3900x
    • eVGA 2070 Super XC
    • 32GB Corsair RAM (2x16GB)
    • 750W PSU
    • Samsung 970 EVO m.2

    What I've tried:

    • Reseated GPU, even tried other PCIe slot
    • Unplugged all peripherals (all USB ports, Ethernet, etc.)
    • Tried each stick of RAM on its own, and then together
    • Tried all DP ports on GPU, and tried HDMI
    • Unplugged and replugged every cable I could find
    • Reset CMOS by pulling battery for 5min

    What happens:

    • Fans fire up as usual (including on GPU)
    • ezDebug lights seem normal: first a second or 2 of BOOT, followed by the bottom 2 flashing for a split second, then all off
    • GPU fans turn off after ~10 seconds
    • Watercooler and CPU/case fans continue spinning
    • USB devices are powered but in their 'startup' phase. This makes me think it's not booting into Windows either way.

    Some strange leads:

    • Twice in the last 6 months I've accidentally kicked the tower while moving around. Pretty light force, like what you'd do when clapping your hands. When this happened (and under load playing games), I got immediate blue screens.
    • Over the last couple weeks (and I'm only thinking anything of this in retrospect), I'd come back to the computer in this black screen situation. I had assumed it was Windows hibernation or something stuck and had to hard power cycle it. That would always fire it back up and working normally, but this morning 100 power cycles later and no luck.

I'm thinking now it's either the GPU or CPU but wanted to see if anyone had a lead as both of those are quite expensive, and I also don't have any backups around to swap out.

    Thank you!

Beefing my rig up for a rigorous 3D modeling/animation/render future. Need a little guidance for the upgrade path.

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 07:51 AM PDT

    Ryzen 7 3700X, X570-E Asus Mobo, RTX 2070 Super and 32GB c16 3600MHz Ram. (Plus 3 1TB HDD's and another 2TB HDD and a 1TB SSD currently for games and a 500gb M.2 for my OS and programs)

The rig I currently use for a lot of Adobe design stuff and gaming (because why the hell not), but I'm diving into 3D more and more and I want to push myself more towards peak performance on the 3D side of things and squeeze some more out of my Aftereffects as well (that bitch be slow). Currently using Blender and Cinema as my 2 programs for 3D.

What I want to know is what more can I add/alter with my build so that I can run some buttery smooth 3D action at a somewhat minimal performance drop? I've heard that having additional cards and running renders on them instead of your main display out card can help, but haven't confirmed it yet. I do intend to wait and see for Big Navi and the new Ampere cards, but having an upgrade path planned would be smart (in my mind anyway)

Alternative to Alcohol for Removing Old Thermal Paste

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 03:32 AM PDT

My son made a great yard sale find a week back: an older gaming PC for $5. Unfortunately, when I asked the seller what the CPU was, she immediately walked over, removed the cooler, then announced "I'm not sure".

It turned out that the box was an AMD FX-6300 w/ 32 GB DDR3, a Gigabyte 1060 3GB video card, and a Thermaltake gold 750W power supply. He could probably part this thing out for $250 or more on Ebay. Assuming it works.

And there's the problem. Assuming it works. I need to reset the CPU cooler, but I can't freaking find isopropyl alcohol anywhere to clean it. Yay apocalypse, right?

Other than "wipe it off with your fingers", is there an alternative?

What do you think of this build for my Girlfriend's brother?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 04:58 AM PDT

    Hey fellow pc enthusiast!

My girlfriend's brother are looking into buying pre-built gaming PCs but I inisted to help him to build his very own PC build.

With his absolute max budget of £800, with the requirements of Wifi, some RGB lightings and solid performance on 1080p (60-100 fps on most games with high settings). I believe this is the ideal build for him.

Before I show this build to him, please could y'all give me some feedback and provide any suggestions (if any) and I'll truly appreciate it! Cheers :)

Help me check my 1600€ build before i do something silly

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 02:52 AM PDT

Hello i posted a few days ago and since then reiterated my list once more.
I read so many interesting builds on this sub and found i could fit a 2080 in my budget (which i upped a little).
Planned use: Mostly gaming but also some 3D-CAD work.
I plan on using a 4k and a 1080p monitor and i want to achieve at least 60 fps.
My favored games are: iRacing, Assetto Corsa Competizione and Cyberpunk 2077 (and maybe valorant or some other fps)

Here is the link to my parts list:
    https://de.pcpartpicker.com/user/ILmann/saved/#view=g7h3yc
I'm sitting in Germany and plan on building in about 4-6 weeks.

Your thoughts on improvements are highly appreciated and thanks for reading.
My major concerns are the compatibility in size and software wise. I think this build looks pretty sturdy, financially and performance wise.

Finally built my dream PC rig

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 01:12 PM PDT

Been waiting to build a pc since high school. Graduated from college now, and decided to finally treat myself. Haven't been HD gaming outside of shitty laptops for years, so god damn I'm happy everything works as expected. I appreciate this subreddit and r/buildapcsales for showing me how easy and affordable it can be. Plus the usual suspects with youtube channels. Have quite a backlog of games to get to now in amazing 144hz, 1440p :)

    First Build. Not powering on.

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 12:59 PM PDT

Starting my first build, got majority of the parts in just waiting on my Windows OS and RAM to come in.... decided to get a head start on everything so I can just plug those in and be ready to go... however, the components I have plugged in currently do NOT work. I have the PSU plugged into the motherboard... but there's no power, fans don't turn on. No lights, nada.

I'm v inexperienced, and my computer knowledge is limited. I apologize in advance.

Below are pics of my motherboard and PSU.

Additionally, the last pic is a up close pic of my PSU Cord. It looks like it's missing a metal prong. It was like that out of the box... is this the reason why it's not working?

    Please advise.

    My first build (ITX)

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 09:09 AM PDT

Finished my first build and was really happy with the outcome. The cable management was kinda bad because I had a hard time working with the short cables that came with the PSU. I only installed one intake and one exhaust fan but I'm wondering if placing two more intake fans beneath the GPU will be beneficial...

Quick Reddit check before I buy everything

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 08:54 AM PDT

This is my second/third build, I just want to check with you guys before I buy anything. I'm on an 850euro budget, I'm already a bit over budget on 865 and I can't go any higher. These are my parts https://fr.pcpartpicker.com/list/9Wvpf9, I don't need any more storage, 500go is enough. I'm also wondering if I should wait for the 3080 so the 2060 will be cheaper.

    Thanks for everyone's time ;D

Thanks for your answers! The first thing I'll do is go from 32 Gb to 16 and cl20 to 16.

I'll also check 5700xt but they might be over budget if I find one second hand I'll tell you :D

Edit: I changed my pcpartpicker list and now it looks like this https://fr.pcpartpicker.com/list/fHmYMc Thanks, again!

CAUTION: PSU CABLES and PSU - BE VERY CAREFUL

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 09:49 AM PDT

I am a PC builder for over 10 years, not a professional, but for personal use. Something basic I learnt the hard way with latest build - I was having issues with PSU units. After all build is complete, plug in and press the start button - Nothing happens ! So, obviously, I thought PSU is dead. Did the paper clip test and the fan spins fine!

Okay, fast forward, I buy a new PSU, put everything back - works fine. SO I thought the previous old PSU died. A month from there, I get heavy coil whine on the new PSU so I want to move to new unit and order Corsair RMx 850. Put everything together (connect the existing cables to new PSU), press the start button- I hear a click in PSU but then no power ! I get so frustrated that I am getting bad units.

I run down to a store nearby, get a brand new 1000 w Seasonic. do the same thing, press the start button - 'click' sound and no power ! At this point I am going crazy. I call the store and they say - bring it back and we can test it (PSU) out for you. Its 20 miles and I have no energy to drive again.

Then I start removing all power cables one by one leaving the 24pin and 2 8pin CPU power cables intact - press the start button - POWER !!!! Now I start connecting one cable at a time back. The cable which I found to be the issue - Sata power cable! This fed to the LED strips, my Kraken X53 pump. I did not luckily connect it to my SSD as I was troubleshooting.

I replaced all cables with the PSU cables that came with the supplied unit (PSU) and all good. In the process - I lost my LED strips and X53 LED display :(

So for those who are not aware - Please please only use the cables that come with the PSU and avoid using pre-used cables from another unit.! I thank god my damage was limited to the two things. I am in process of replacing the LED strips. X53 pump is fine so planning to leave it alone for now and live without the rings sadly.

Just finished rebuilding in my new case! (Lancool II)

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 09:23 AM PDT

I had become super bored with my old case (phanteks P300, non airflow) so I decided to treat myself to a new case with more water cooling potential. Last Black Friday I picked up the EK fluid gaming A240 custom loop on a great deal. Pump mounting was not easy in the old case. I switched between mounted horizontal below the GPU to upright mounted to the rear case fan with a custom bracket I 3D printed. This was fine, but I decided I wanted to eventually add the GPU into the loop with another bigger radiator.

So I began the search for a new case. It had to be white, have room for a 240 and 360mm rad, have a good spot to securely mount the pump, and at the very least, better airflow than the P300. Bonus features I wanted were RGB and vertical GPU mounting, because I love the mirror finish on the FE 2070 Super. I landed on the Lancool 2 after watching a few reviews and I really liked the front panel RGB.

A quick case review for anyone interested; Overall I think it's a great case. I added the Lian Li accessory RGB strip, in hindsight adding a generic one probably would've been fine. I also used the Phanteks Universal GPU bracket, not the Lian Li accessory one, because it was $15 cheaper and because I saw some bad reviews on the quality of the Lian Li one. I am happy with the phanteks bracket, it fits great and rests on the bottom mounted fans for added support, no sag whatsoever. The case was super easy to build in, and cable management was a breeze. The case has two panels on the back that sandwich all your cables against the motherboard tray and hide them. You basically don't have to cable manage at all if you don't want to. The case has plenty of room for both radiators and the limp which is great. Nothing in my setup is too cramped in here. I will say this about front radiator mounting, if you want to mount one at all, you will have to remove the small panel on the floor of the chassis to make room for it. I really wanted to mount the pump to that panel so I chose to cut a centimeter off of it so it would clear the rad and fans, then drilled the holes for the pump. So fitting all of what I wanted the way I wanted was not possible without modification, but I am very comfortable modifying things to have them be exactly how they want, so this does not bother me too much. I would give this case a 7/10 overall. I think it looks phenomenal and I give that a 10/10, but after pricing in the GPU bracket and light strip, it becomes a much more expensive case so it loses out in the value department.

    Picture! https://imgur.com/gallery/wSLmA0Q

    My system is a R5 3600, B450, 2070S build with 16gb RAM and 2 M.2 drives for storage.

00 Bios Code MSI X99-A Godlike Gaming

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 07:14 AM PDT

Hello to you all, I'm creating this post today because I'm losing my mind trying to figure out what's wrong with my system. I own this system:

    • Case: CORSAIR 760T V2
    • Motherboard: MSI X99A GODLIKE GAMING
    • CPU: I7-5820K
    • RAM: CORSAIR DOMINATOR PLATINUM 64GB (8 x 8GB) DDR4
    • GPU: SLI 2x ASUS STRIX 980TI 6GB OC EDITION
    • SSD for OS: SAMSUNG 950 PRO 512GB
    • Hard Drive for Data: WESTERN DIGITAL BLACK EDITION 2TB
    • Power Supply: CORSAIR RM 1000W
    • CPU Cooler: CORSAIR H110I GT w/ Push-Pull Configuration NF-A14

I've owned this system for like 4-5 years, but a few weeks ago my pc started to lose power randomly and turn back on to a 00 Bios code, I'd read and it's usually a dead cpu or motherboard, until this part I understand, but what's bugging me it's that when I disconnect the AC Cable from PSU and leave it rest for like an hour, once I turn it on it does boot normally as nothing had happened before. I already updated my bios and done a reset on it, but without any success. I also can no longer boot my pc with 64GB but can only boot it with 16GB.

I hope someone can help me out here today, really appreciate all the help :)

    Thanks in advance.

DIY Frankenstein GTX 670 because on the fans broke and it sounded like a jet engine

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 01:46 PM PDT

    https://imgur.com/a/eulAIyh

Took a Dremel to my ASUS GTX 670 and replaced the fans with bigger MSI fans scavenged from my old, faulty GTX 760. The temps stay considerably lower and it's much quieter, so that's great.

Still can't properly play the games I want to though (broke ass student life).

First time builder here, need some advice.

So I've been bouncing back and forth between processors, and it's overwhelming as fuck. I've decided to go with intel. For a while I decided on the i7 9700, but the more I read the more I wonder if I need that? Basically just for gaming, but potentially want to record music on it in the future. Most of the advice I've seen is spend less on the CPU, and more on the GPU. So, between all the options between i5 and i7, what would y'all reccomend? I play alot of wow, wich I know could run on a potato, but I'm also looking to play higher end games smoothly. I'm not looking to get 120 fps, at 4k, but something nice. So recommendations on a processor, a MoBo to go with it, and a gpu would be great. Budget wise, I don't want to spend more than 500 on a part.

(edit) I know this might not be enough info, and the Gen's and different types of processors is confusing af to me, so hopefully it's good enough
