    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Ryzen 5 3600 was recommended to me

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 04:57 AM PDT

I had a Ryzen 3 1300x, and it approached a point where I couldn't run Warzone and Xbox chat/discrord at the same time, it pushed my CPU too far. So I caved in and went with a Ryzen 5 3600, and let me tell you, insane difference. What pushed my 1300x to 100% OC'ed (720p trying 60fps), pushes my Ryzen 5 MAYBE 30% without OC (1080p solid 60fps). I didn't realize how CPU heavy modern games are becoming.

Thank you to this community for making this rather new PC gamer VERY happy.

    That's all I have :)

P.S. A Ryzen 5 3600 / GTX 1660 Super 6gb combo is an absolute monster combination chefs kiss. It works flawlessly on my MSI B350M Gaming MOBO.

I'd like to surprise my son by upgrading his GPU to an RTX 2070 while he is away, but also want his build to last for some years, what else should I upgrade?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 08:35 PM PDT

My son has been amazing and he's been saving to buy a new graphics card for his PC, since he wants to play Cyberpunk 2077 with good graphics and frames.

He will be away from home at the end of this month for a week, and I thought it would be a great surprise to upgrade his PC without him knowing. I know nothing about PC components, just wrote on my notes when I heard him talking to his friends saying that he was saving for an RTX 2070.

I've been reading for a while and watching videos now. The installation of the graphics card seems easy, and I should be able to do it without issues, but I'm a bit scared of any incompatibility issues with his current build. I have his password, so while he was away today I took screenshots of his specs:

    His PC

My main concern is his motherboard, which I don't know if it's compatible with the RTX as I can't find much info about it online. I also took pictures of the inside of his PC in case I missed anything important.

I got him this PC about 6 years ago and it seems like it's been an amazing investment since he's used it basically every day for gaming and university. It cost me about $750 in 2014 if I remember correctly. So the RTX will be the main addition, but I would also love to change anything that needs an upgrade in order to make his PC last another 6 years.

Thank you very much for your help and I'll stay tuned to answer any other questions!

Edit: Overwhelmed by all the support from this post, this community is amazing. I'll go for the entire build as most of you suggested and surprise him with that! I'll leave his PC as it is and let him sell it or whatever he wants. Considering that there will be a new RTX release, I might give him the new PC without the GPU and also surprise him with the pre-order of the new one, or install it if it's released on time. I'll also consider just buying all the components and building the PC from scratch with him, which would be really cool too.

Should I buy an ethernet cable for gaming?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 03:09 AM PDT

My mom sometimes makes phone calls using Whatsapp and when she does my ms goes from 60 to like 200. Will an ethernet cable maintain my 60 ms or at least keep it low, around 70-80?

Also the others using my wifi without ethernet will have a slow internet?

P.S this is the ethernet cable: Cat.6 Ethernet Gigabit LAN RJ45-10 100 1000 Mbit s

I built my first PC in two hours. Never been so proud of myself. Here's what I did

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 08:00 PM PDT

After using laptops for as long as I can remember I decided to upgrade my WFH setup and build my own PC. The idea was intimidating at first but after seeing how much free resources are available I just pulled the trigger and ordered the parts. It went better than I expected. Here's what I did

    -Watched build guides on youtube
-Watched build guides for my specific case
-Downloaded the motherboard manual and googled every phrase I didnt understand.
-Googled every header on the motherboard and learned what it does
-Read the case manual and also googled everything
-During the build itself if I didnt know where a cable goes I googled the label on it

All in all the process felt like playing lego, for the most part everything fits in one place so you really cant screw up, just keep the motherboard manual handy. Seeing the computer turn on first attempt was a moment of pure joy, sure the screen was blank for a while and I started to panic, but I quickly noticed that It wasnt plugged in so all is good

Suggestions for keeping a cat off of the top of a computer?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 05:46 AM PDT

So my buddy wants me to help him with his new PC build which is great, he needs an upgrade badly. However, currently one if his main issues is that his current case has the majority of the heated air coming out of the top of the PC case, and his cat likes to sit on top and block it, causing his computer to overheat.

What are some things we can do to stop this/mitigate this aside from just moving his exhaust to the back?

Is now *really* a bad time to buy a GPU with such low stock?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 06:25 AM PDT

I see a lot of people say "wait until the new release" to pick 2000 series GPUs but with such low stock out there, is it worth waiting?

In case you didn't know, when running a 3dMark test, you can skip the demo movie and run straight to the test to save a lot of time.. it's purely for showing off and does not affect your score.

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 01:06 PM PDT

There is an option in the upper right corner to disable the demo. As someone who's run a couple tests to troubleshoot GPU issues, I had no idea the demo wasn't necessary and wasted so much time waiting for it to be over. This might be common sense to some but I had no idea. Hope it helps!

    Build now or wait?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 11:11 AM PDT

Hi guys so recently my brother built a pc and I was thinking of building one too in the near future instead of upgrading to the ps5. He did a Ryzen 5 3600x/Rx 5700 build and I was thinking of doing the same.

But my question is, with The RTX 3000 series and ps5s coming out in the next few months would it be better to wait til there released as it might drop prices in CPU and GPU parts? Or would it? I would love your opinions on this. Thanks!

Edit: this is my first pc I only have a ps4 at the moment.

Heatkiller IV Basic or Heatkiller Pro Pure Copper?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 07:13 AM PDT

    Hello All!

I have a current PC build with a 10700k overclocked to 5.2ghz at 1.4v running stable 24/7 on a AIO. This is going into a Lian Li XL case with 2 360mm radiators (Probably the SR2 since GTX 360's sold out) along with the new 3080's watercooled when they are released hopefully next month so i'm shopping for parts from now.

Now I am torn between the Heatkiller IV Basic Acryl clean and the Heatkiller IV Pro Pure copper. Pure copper supposedly has lower flow rate but better temps than the basic but I do like the all copper look and quality more. In terms of performance, what is better all around ignoring price.

Also, if you have suggestions on which tubings/fitments I should use for my setup please any suggestions are appreciated!

This hard drive has been having me on edge. Boot up time, load up time for games. Let alone everyone telling me I need an SSD which I agree lol. Now I'm not advance with pc but if i get an SSD do i remove my HD or do I use both? I could have easily searched that up but it came to mine just now typing this. Also what is a recommended SSD to get? What improvements could i expect other then load up time having a SSD then a HD. Thanks everyone!

My monitor is a brand new AOC CQ27G1.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

A few weeks ago, after I bought a new monitor (an AOC CQ27G1) I started experiencing really long boot times compared to what I had previously, they went from around 8 seconds to closer to a full minute. On top of that, I noticed the VGA light on my motherboard was staying on for a long time (up until the bios) and each USB device would power on one by one. On top of that, in the last few days my PC had some really weird blue screens that were display related (playing both of the 2 games I pretty much exclusively play: Valorant and Rocket League). I uninstalled and reinstalled the AMD drivers and that didn't solve it, so I decided to look at some things online, only to discover that apparently sometimes DisplayPort cables can cause issues? I tried it in all 3 ports of my GPU and it still was causing the boot issue, so I decided to try an HDMI cable. I thought that was too simple, low and behold, my boot times went back to normal (no hanging VGA light either) and I haven't crashed yet. I briefly booted up the games last night (and tried to duplicate the instances when I would crash; after planting the spike or after it exploded in Valorant was the only consistent time it would crash) everything seemed okay, the only thing I experienced was a bit of screen flickering, however I tried a brand new HDMI and that went away (so far).

I guess my real question, is can it have been such a simple fix? Is it possible that a bad DP cable can wreak that much havoc on boot times, on blue screens, and on other stuff? I can't use my second monitor since my GPU has only one HDMI port, which isn't the end of the world, but I don't have another DP cable to try out and see if it is a problem with the cable or a problem with my GPU. I just couldn't find a ton of information, so I'm hoping someone could enlighten me a bit. This is only my second PC that I've built, so I'm not super knowledgeable on these sort of intricacies.

Thank you so much for reading, and for your time.

    Problem solving random crashes

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 06:33 AM PDT

    Hey,

So, I did not build this PC. It was built by a company for me. It crashes randomly playing games (instant restart). Sometimes I can play for 40-50mins before it will crash, other times it will crash on loading up. This tends to be intensive games.

The PC was RMA'd but the company were unable to replicate the crashes... so they sent it back to me. Saying it was a software/media issue. I have removed all non essential USBs. I'm absolutely raging about this and I'm dealing with it outside of the post.

But, the issue with my PC still remains and I want to see if you experienced PC builders can help me narrow down its issue.

    Specs:
    AMD Ryzen 9 3900X
    32GB 3000mhz RAM
    MSI GeForce RTX 2070 Super
MSI B450M PRO-VDH (wish I spent a little more here personally)
    Corsair CV650 650W 80+

    What I have tried:
    Prime95 - no crash
    Furmark - 2hours no crash
    Memtest - no crash
Cinebench - crashed once, not crashed the 10x since
    DDU
    Removing all non-essential USB's/Monitors etc
Manually adjusted CPU Voltage - helped reduce the number of crashes

Games I have crashed on (probably some others):
    Destiny 2
    Apex Legends
    Death Stranding
    Final Fantasy XIV
    Grounded
    Horizon Zero Dawn
    Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice.

I'm thinking it is a PSU issue, and I do have another here somewhere that is 550 (I think). Is it worth me trying to change these over and see if I have the crashes, or will changing it to 550 from 650 bring its own problems?

Is it worth me reinstalling windows?

I have also disabled C-State in my BIOS now, but this is untested. I will try some games now and see if that has any impact on the restarts.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, greatly appreciated.

For good-quality gaming and basic-level streaming, is the RTX 2070 SUPER a must buy or can I get away with a cheaper GPU?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 10:21 AM PDT

First time builder, planning to build in a few months. Sorry if my understanding is super basic.

From what I've read, it seems like the RTX 2070 SUPER will guarantee a great gaming experience and allow for streaming with little to no effect on gaming performance. My question is: are there cheaper GPUs that would also give me those benefits without the price? What would you suggest I look at?

While I currently don't play the most graphically demanding video games out there (just League, Elder Scrolls Online, Fall Guys), I would still like to have that option in the future. But I'd probably be willing to sacrifice streaming when it comes to the games with higher system requirements. I also do not plan to do any major video editing work.

Also, I have heard that there are shortages of parts right now. If that should be something I add to the equation let me know.

    Thanks!

My first gaming build for €2000, any advice?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 11:54 AM PDT

Hi guys, so I've finally decided on parts for my first gaming build, it'll cost me 2000€ without shipping all things considered, I am a bit concerned however with the dimensions of the case in relation to the size of my components used.

I'm wondering if this build would also be able to handle 60fps high/ultra settings gaming for latest games, emulation of PS2, N64, PS3 and X360 titles, as well as 1080p video streaming (Netflix, YouTube etc.) I'll be paying in Euros from British Pounds so be sure to switch the location to United Kingdom

    Thanks for any feedback/advice!

    Looking to upgrade from i7 7700 + GTX 1060 6GB

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 01:53 PM PDT

    Hi there,

I'm currently looking to upgrade my build soon. The main reason being I want to enjoy my 144hz monitor and being able to stream my games too.

Currently, I play mostly CoD MW Multiplayer/Warzone and this game is just brutal (mostly Warzone). I also do VR sometimes like Beat Saber. My CPU and GPU are working at 99% at almost all the time when I play WZ and I only get about 70-80 FPS.

So streaming with my current build looks impossible (at least on WZ). I have even tried to use OBS-NDI to locally stream with my laptop, but no luck since the NDI link will just freeze, because of the CPU usage.

I currently have an i7 7700 with a GTX 1060 6GB (Full build below). I don't know if I really want to upgrade my CPU and GPU at once since that will be costly. So what should be my priority ? CPU or GPU ?

A friend of mine said that it's the GPU making the CPU throttle, because it cannot handle the load, but I never heard of anything like this before (I'm no expert in hardware through).

So for the CPU, the options I had in mind : * i7 10700 - Currently has a deal for $456 CAD (Amazon Canada) * Ryzen - $420 CAD (Amazon Canada) * Wait for the Ryzen 4000 series to come out

As for the GPU, the options I had in mind : * RTX 2070S (or RTX 2060S while upgrading also the CPU ?) * Wait for the RTX 3070

What would you guys do ?

EDIT 1 : Forgot to mention : I'm a programmer, I plan to use some VMs sometimes and probably WSL too.
