    Simple Questions - July 31, 2020

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 05:12 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Does a CPU with graphics waste power if you have a GPU?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 07:59 AM PDT

Wondering if processing power is wasted on onboard graphics if you have a GPU, or if it just shuts off. If two identical processors exist, with and without onboard graphics, is there any benefit to getting the latter?

EDIT: This thread has blown up. To save newcomers the trouble, I was comparing i5 9400 to 9400f. The one without graphics was more expensive on Amazon, but I suppose it may just be supply&demand, as a lot of people were buying the F series (without graphics). Due to recommendations, will probably end up getting 9600k. It's a budget secondary build for games (Mini Tower for travel).

My main tower (3900x, 64gb Ram, 2070 Super) is already the powerhouse I need for my other hobbies.

    New PC - Lost Passion

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 07:21 AM PDT

I just built a new gaming PC here last week and had the greatest time building it. After building I thought I was going to have a great time playing some of the old PC games that I had in years past.

I feel like I've lost total passion for video games and can't get into a single one anymore. I play for 30 minutes then stop because I don't like it anymore. I wonder if anyone else has felt this?

I'm in college for Computer Systems Engineering and honestly I'm happier right now programming for other things and taking a different route. I guess whatever makes me happy. Just interested in everyone else and their experiences.

Memory issues with Corsair, AMD Ryzen 3700X and a B450 motherboard

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 05:33 AM PDT

It's my first build, and I must have messed up somewhere. Everything is installed, the hardest part for me was plugging in the PSU everywhere- I think it's okay but wouldn't bet on it. I can power on and off, but the monitor isn'rlt recognising it. The cable isn't the problem, I've checked with another device. Rang an expert who said the problem may be that the Memory isn't compatible:

    I have an ATX B450 motherboard - the ASRock Fatal1ty B450 Gaming K4 - with the AMD Ryzen 3700 x and it doesn't seem like the memory I bought is compatible: - Corsair 178300 Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4 3200 MHz C16 XMP 2.0

I've looked around and it seems that the following may be compatible: - Corsair CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4 3000 MHz C15 XMP 2.0

Will the second one (C15) be okay and hopefully fix the issue for me?

I'd be really grateful if you guys could help me out, I was bummed when I tried to boot and was really hoping it would work right away, what a fool I was.

    Any pointers for a newbie?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 12:14 PM PDT

Six years after buying a pre-built desktop, I'm finally venturing into building my own computer. I had a little help from a friend in doing research for the parts, but I wanted to run it by this sub before I start buying. Also had a few small (and probably dumb) questions. I'm trying to run mostly modern day games, notably Civilization VI, Witcher, Minecraft, etc., I also do video editing to give you kind of an idea of what I need. Trying to keep budget around $1500 if possible, but it's not the end of the world if it's not.

    • The AMD Ryzen 7 2700X seems to come with a CPU cooler already, does that mean I can ditch the Noctua cooler and save $40?
    • Do I need any additional parts to enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth? What about sound?
    • For the OS, pcpartpicker.com lists Windows 10 with various prices, including free. Isn't it only free if you upgrade from Windows 8? If this is a fresh install, should I just buy Windows 10 along with the rest of the parts?
    • Speaking of software, are there any that I should have right off the bat? Or is just Windows 10 enough?

Thanks in advance for your help.

So ram speed/timings are a big deal

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 12:55 PM PDT

My 6700K running at 4.5Ghz was really struggling to maintain 60FPS in demanding areas of Assassin's Creed Odyssey. No matter the settings there would be dips in the early 50s and since I don't have G-Sync so it's really noticeable. It didn't make sense though since 4c/8t didn't struggle like that in the benchmarks of the game.

So before jumping to a full upgrade I decided to upgrade my ram from 2133Mhz CL15 to 3200Mhz CL16. Turned on XMP and bam the dips are almost entirely gone. The CPU still does go to 100% but I don't care about that if the FPS is 60 or above.

I also want to make a point that XMP isn't a plug and play thing like it's portrayed. Without changing any other setting my CPU voltage jumped significantly which resulted in much higher temps. So I had to put a more strict limit on the voltage so now I am running at exactly the same voltage as before with no stability issues.

What is this pin called? :p

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 07:56 AM PDT

Extreme PC building noob here, trying to build my first ever PC.

My case came with an inbuilt fan and it has this pin. -

    https://imgur.com/a/hmxWciA

What am I supposed to connect it to?

I oredered stuff on amazon and only the case has arrived until now.

Also, the fan is RGB with rainbow colors (which you cannot change) and I dont want the rainbow colors, I'd rather have the RGB turned off. Is there a ways I could turn off the RGB of the fan but at the same time have it running?

    My First "Build"

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 05:57 AM PDT

    Specs:

    CPU - Ryzen 5 2600 ||| Mobo - Gigabyte B450M DS3H ||| GPU - GeForce GT 710 ||| HDD - Seagate 1TB ||| SSD - Kingston 240gb ||| PSU - Rave 500 watt 80+ Silver ||| RAM - Ramsta 8x2 DDR4 2666hz ||| Case - Fantech Strike CG72 ||| Total Price - $867 (PHP 42,600)

This was my first "build" in a sense that I handpicked the parts but I myself did not build this set. I went to a pc building specialist and gave them the parts. Needless to say, majority of those parts had to be switched out with something cheaper available as my budget was initially just around $900 but the build I gave was beyond $1000.

I switched out the Ryzen 5 3500x for the Ryzen 5 2600 as they didnt have both 3500 and 3500x in their stocks and the closest to them was the 3400G. So I picked which seemed to have the most value which, the 5 2600 with 6 cores and 12 threads seems to have

I switched out the GTX 1050 ti for the GT 710 which, which ever way I looked at was not possible for me to get at that moment. I've already downgraded my CPU and had no other cheaper choice for the Mobo that I had to stoop so low to get the GT 710. But it was also the cheapest graphics card I could get at that moment and I am planning to upgrade the GPU in a few years. But this was my most disappointing pick in the entire build

But I've intentionally bumped up my CPU to a Ryzen 5 rather than trying to balance out the scale by getting a 1660 ti and a Ryzen 3 as I am a Multimedia Artist and learned than Multicore processes along with at least 16gb ram would have allowed me to do the most I can with Adobe and other CPU intensive apps. Of course, I haven't done enough digging to validate that everything that I've heard and saw was 100% true but from the credible sources I've seen, the Adobe apps use more of your processor and ram than GPU.

So yes! If you'd like to share your thoughts on a beginner builder or would like to suggest something feel free. But this is my first build, and I'm happy with how it ended up to be!

I ordered all my parts and now I'm wondering if I made a mistake!

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 01:37 PM PDT

It's not the end of the world, thankfully. However, I have a question about the ram I purchased:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07KXNGWRF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It is arriving Monday. I bought this kit under the impression that they will come clocked at 4000MHz. Forgive me but I'm reading now on the product page that the base frequency is in fact 2133MHz and up to 4000MHz with XMP 2.0 enabled.

Will I get 4000MHz from this ram or have I made a mistake? Should I return the product before opening or will I be able to get this performance with overclocking?

    Thanks everyone!

I'm wanting to build a new gaming PC right now!! Need Advice!! First Build! CPU - Intel or AMD? Building for New GPU's

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 01:19 PM PDT

I'm building this gaming pc planning on using the new 3000's series GPU/AMD Big Navi 2 coming out later this year. I will just be getting a used GPU to get me by for a couple of months.

    Build Parts:

CPU: i7-10700 or i7-10700k (Opinions??) *Should I wait for Ryzen zen 3? or should I get a cheap AMD CPU like the 5 3600 and upgrade once the zen 3 come out so I get PCIE Gen 4??

Motherboard: Asus Rog-Strix Z490-A Gaming or MSI MEG Z490 Unify (Opinions??)

GPU: 3000's Series or Big Navi 2 (will get a used GPU to get by for a couple months)

Power Supply: What power supplies have the new rumored connector for the 3000 series GPUs? Don't want to have to buy a new power supply in 3 months.

I know obviously waiting 3 months until all the new CPUs/GPus are out would be the best but I am stuck at home bored so that's why I want to build it now. I would like to be able to build something now and just swap out the GPU for either new 3000's series GPU or the Big Navi 2.

I'm not very knowledgeable in PC parts and building as this will be my first ever build ever so please any feedback will be helpful.

Hello all! Please delete if not allowed. Thanks! So Ive been deciding to get an ultrawide for the longest time, preferably the 34". I am from the Philippines and my choices right now are the Xiao Mi 34" and the Cooler Master GM34-CW. Spec wise they are pretty similar, but I can about color so I need help. The Xiao Mi comes in 85% NTSC and the Cooler Master comes in 95% DCI-P3. What colors will look better? Or will it be the same? Also is 1ms and 4ms noticeable? Thanks all!!

    First Build Complete, Thank You!

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 12:58 PM PDT

Firstly, a million thanks to this subreddit - your input over several PC Part Picker Lists was invaluable in assembling parts.

Fortunately, I didn't run into any issues during the build, largely thanks to the hundreds of hours on YouTube watching build videos.

This is my first solo build, mostly assembled last November during Black Friday, but I just upgraded the CPU cooler from the stock Wraith Prism to the Scythe Fuma 2.

TWO NOTES: I haven't updated my GPU, because my 1070 Ti is still going strong. So no money was spent there. And the 3800x inexplicably dropped below the 3700x price during sales, so I figured what the heck.

Since the parts market is crazy right now should I just wait for things to calm down before trying to build my first pc?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 12:45 PM PDT

I just started research for my first build but as since the market is going insane right now any builds I find that are advertised as in my budget 500-700 dollars, are massively inflated besides covid ending and the U.S China tarrifs ending I personally have no idea when parts may go back to normal. So what I'm asking is are there either any reasonably builds in my range that anyone is aware of having parts that avoided getting massive jacked or should I just wait a couple months.

I spent an afternoon / evening with some friends a few weeks back rebuilding my PC to make the thermals and cable management better.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 10:51 AM PDT

    Pics

I live about an hour away from MicroCenter so made a Saturday morning trip out there with a friend for a new Mobo, More RAM and Case (With masks on and all that stuff ofc). Spent around $400 on new parts.

The rest of this build was from my old micro ATX build I made about a year and a half ago. I wanted better cable management and better thermal performance. Took us a bit longer than we expected but overall I am really happy with the build. Plus it was just a fun day geeking out with the boys.

The case I put in the PCpartpicker isn't the exact case (They didn't have it in there for some reason.) Its the Lian Li 205 case that I used.

I got the i9 sitting pretty at 5ghz now. Still tinkering with the fan push pull config and some other stuff but I'm really happy with how its turned out so far. Getting all the RGB to work was a major pain bc of having to migrate my Lighting Node out of my old case. May just skip RGB next time but I already had the fans so it seemed like a waste to not hook it all up.

I also added all my other stuff I have collected over the years that I use with my rig on the list. Some stuff (specifically the BenQ monitor) I have had for 5-6 years so this all wasn't one big bulk purchase. Also some of the fans were included in my old case so the price total is not what I actually paid for everything.

    XFX Card Model

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 02:09 PM PDT

I got a second hand graphics card from a friend and I'm trying to determine the precise model, but can't connect it to my PC because it's.... not built yet.

The only text on the card is a logo that says "XFX" and a serial number that brings up nothing in search.

    Two Questions result :

    1) Is there a way to determine the precise model of this card without running a driver check on it?

    2) What God forsaken product designer would produce a piece of hardware without proper labeling?

    Best Dell Optiplex for upgrading?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 02:03 PM PDT

So I'm trying to build a PC for a budget of under $200 and I think upgrading an Optiplex. I was looking on ebay and there seems to be so many models that I don't know which one is the best for upgrading since I heard sone use a bunch of proprietary things So which one is good for upgrading? I also still haven't found I good GPU so if anyone knows of a good budget one that'll fit in an Optiplex I would very much appreciate it. I going to use this PC for some gaming.

i5 4690k and GTX 960, what to upgrade first?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 05:52 AM PDT

Hi r/buildapc, I'm looking to upgrade something from my current PC (served me well for 5+ years), and here is my current specs:

    CPU: i5 4690k OCed to 4.5ghz
    GPU: GTX 960
    RAM: 8 GB DDR3 @ 2133 MHz

NOTE: All pricing are on AUD, availability and prices do differ between US and Aus.

Alright, so I have a few things in mind already -

    • CPU upgrade also means a motherboard and RAM change. There's someone selling a Ryzen 2600 + motherboard used for A$300, and I can pick up good 16GB ram sticks new for A$120. This totals to A$420, but if I don't get that used CPU/mobo combo, it'll be quite a bit more expensive, which might mean A$500 or more if I want to go this path.

    • GPU upgrade, with the following GPU prices (cheapest I can get from retailers, don't talk to me about used prices for some reason the pricing here is just dumb)
GPU - AUD price - Price converted to USD (Memory | Brand)

      • GTX 1660 Super - A$350 - 251 USD (6GB | Galax One-Click OC) Link
      • GTX 1660 Ti - A$430 - 300 USD (6GB | Asus Phoenix, 1 fan cooler) Link
      • RX 5500 XT - A$320 - 230 USD (4GB | Sapphire Pulse) Link
      • Radeon RX 5600 XT - A$440 - 315 USD (6GB Asrock Challenger D) Link
      • RTX 2060 - A$500 - 350 USD (6GB | Galax EX) Link
    • RAM upgrade, from 8GB to 16GB. Speaking of which, it's mental how the price of DDR3 RAM is not that much different compared to DDR4 RAMs.

The big question: Which one do I do first? CPU (and Motherboard and RAM), GPU, or just RAM for now? If GPU, which one?

Use cases: Games, some streaming, photo editing, and probably some 10+ tab browsing.

How good is this build for under $1000?

This is my first PC build, and I just mixed some parts that a few people reccomended. I mainly intend to use this for gaming (specifically games like Valorant, Warzone, Read Dead Redemption 2, and some of the more modern games). I will also be doing school work, but I won't be using any intense programs.
