    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Just switched to AMD, is this temperature normal w/ stock cooler?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 05:37 AM PDT

I just switched platforms and got me a Ryzen 5 3600X. It's been working great for the past couple of hours but in HWinfo it gave me a maximum temp of 80.9C after some gaming. Is this safe? I've never had an OC CPU but was just worried that might be too high? I'm using the stock wraith cooler with the pre applied paste. Also, I've noticed the cpu fan will ramp up during load and drop rpms after a while, is this okay as well? Thanks!

Edit: As soon as I disabled core performance boost within bios, my temps dropped significantly! I'm around 40c idle, 65c under load, fans don't constantly ramp up anymore so I think I'm okay now. Overclocking and pushing my system to the limit isn't my intention so for now I'm good without CPB on. I'll probably enable it again once I can get myself a better cooler later. Thanks for the responses!

Edit 2: I went ahead and purchased an aftermarket cooler per suggestions! I went with the Arctic Freezer 33 esports one since it matches my green setup and comes with some mx4! Once again thanks for all the help, have a great weekend!

Upgrading to 144hz Was A Big Letdown For Me

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 10:32 AM PDT

I know it will be an unpopular opinion but I felt "let down" with 144hz. It was hyped up as this super amazing thing vs 60-75hz and how "once you experience 144, you'll never go back" and all that. I finally pulled the plug and ordered a 144hz monitor while back and it's a great monitor, fit right in my budget and worked perfectly. However the whole revolutionary 144hz thing was the biggest disappointment. Before I go further, yes I was using a DP cable and had it set to 144hz in the Nvidia control panel.

I hear how people say all the time how they'd prefer 1080p 144hz vs a higher resolution at only 60Hz but I think the bump in resolution (or size in monitor) is significantly more noticeable and enjoyable vs 144hz. Seeing games on my friends 1440p ultra wide monitor (60Hz) was so much better then any of the 144hz monitors I've experienced since I jumped on the hype train.

Idk I just felt like yea I can see the difference, but it's nowhere near as good as the difference between 30 to 60Hz. At the end of the day I loved the monitor and it was money well spent, but I just couldn't help but chime in in case anyone is thinking of jumping to 144hz bc they've been told it's the best thing since sliced bread. IMHO, it's an improvement but not one that's 100% necessary. I think I would have preferred a bigger or ultra wide monitor instead knowing what I know now.

Need some advice on Upgrading vs. Building a new one

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 06:11 AM PDT

Here's the system I am using now

    • CPU: Intel Core i5 6500
    • Mobo: Gigabyte H110M-A
    • Memory: DDR4 2133 Mhz 16 GB
    • Primary HDD: Samsung 850 EVO
    • GPU: GTX 1650 (Zotac)

A little background on usage and some additional context:

    • I don't play games, have no real need for OC unless it speeds up the system. Not a big fan of the idea of OC anyway. Would rather invest on a build that leads a good long life and dies of old age.
    • I intend to play 4K videos on the system.
    • More cores and threads for multitasking are essential: I have about 40-50 Chrome/Edge tabs open at any point. Multiple MS Excel and Word documents open at the same time. Multiple dev tools open at the same time, working on large datasets. Multiple comm apps open at the same time (Teams, Skype, Slack). Also use Citrix and RDP frequently.
    • Watch Netflix 4K, Crave, Youtube in the browser.
    • The current system is frequently maxing out on CPU (mainly it's the Edge browser). Moved from Chrome to Edge to save RAM, but now I have a different problem it seems.
    • Old guy, big fan of Intel (do not want to switch to AMD).

    Options

(My goal is to spend $1200 CA or less. I have trust in parts sold on and by Amazon.ca, like I said an old guy with die-hard favs):

Plan A: If I can upgrade the CPU or make minor adjustments to the current build that's more preferable. Leaves some room in the budget to buy a QHD 144Hz monitor. I am thinking of upgrading the CPU to i5 9500.

Q: If I upgrade the mobo to GIGABYTE B360 AORUS Gaming 3 WiFi and the RAM to 2666Mhz Corsair, do I have to reinstall Windows 10? Repairing Windows 10 makes you reinstall all your apps, which a huge task for me. Some of the dev tools will take days to config.

Plan B: Rebuild based on this plan. Some of these parts are back-ordered right now.

    PCPartPicker Part List: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/6dk2wh

CPU: Intel Core i5-9600K 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor ($289.99 @ Amazon Canada) CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 RGB Black Edition 57.3 CFM CPU Cooler ($59.99 @ Amazon Canada)

Motherboard: Asus PRIME Z390-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($260.19 @ Amazon Canada) Memory: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory ($199.99 @ Amazon Canada) Storage: Samsung 970 Evo 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive ($259.99 @ Amazon Canada) Power Supply: Cooler Master MWE Gold 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply ($136.99 @ Amazon Canada)

    Total: $1207.14

    Issues with this plan:

    1. I have to buy Windows 10. The current one I am using is an Edu version.
    2. Go through the process of setup all over again. Transfer data not in the cloud to the new system.
    3. Does not leave room in the budget for the monitor upgrade.

Thank you for reading the long post. Appreciate the guidance in advance.

    1080p 144hz monitor with $1000 build

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 04:00 AM PDT

Title, i plan to put a 2060/super in the build, is it stupid?

Also i had to buy the monitor first because i can't bear with my 768p monitor from 2010 because of dozens of dead pixel and flickering.

    Ram

    Motherboard bandwidth

I have a couple of questions regarding the compatibility and bandwidth of the motherboard with all the hardware I plan on using. I kind of understand that m.2 and gpu bandwidth is shared in some situations, however I'm unsure where the limits lie with the Aorus Master specifically. Will it be possible to use the two 2080 tis in the top two PCIe slots while populating all 3 m.2 slots? I want to run the two 970 Evo Plus 1 TB in raid 1, to ensure I can recover from a failure without downtime to my current project. The third m.2 slot will house the 2tb "storage" evo, which will be used for less critical data, so I can live without the redundancy.

Are there any specific settings I have to apply to the bios to ensure compatibility?

    Case layout

Additionally everything will be super tight, as I'm planning on using the Cerberus X ATX case from Sliger. I travel regularly, so having this much power on the go will be a godsent. Because of the high power consumption of a dual 2080 ti setup it will need a full size PSU, since i have found no sfx above 800w. In the cerberus X, the only available space for an ATX psu is directly above the CPU.

From my understanding, the ST1200-PTS is a bit shorter than a usual ATX PSU, but to be safe I went with the NZXT Kraken x63 with its low profile pump. The 280mm radiator will be placed in the front, leaving very little room for the GPU. However I have read that 269mm gpu length should just be small enough to fit.

    Cooling

To be ready for action asap, the GPUs will remain aircooled and the CPU will receive an AIO, but I'm considering switching to a custom loop eventually. To keep this thing from melting, I want to use two 140mm noctua at the bottom as intake and two 120mm slim noctua at the top as output. I might also switch the fans that come with the kraken with the two 140mm noctua or even slims if the GPUs don't fit. Radiator at the bottom might also be an option, however I'm not sure about the length of the AIO tubing.

Since this is an absurd amount of money, I'm thankful for any pointers to issues I have missed or general feedback.

I'm of course planning on submitting a build log upon completion.

    TLDR:

    2x 2080 + 3x m.2 on Aorus Master ok? 280mm radiator + 269mm gpu length in cerberus x ok?

Thanks to u/sch232 I have a rough idea for parts , but I am still unsure...

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 12:30 PM PDT

    Good Evening!

Earlier today I wrote a post about upgrading a pre built pc I bought around 6/7 years ago; https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/hl41px/upgrading_my_pc_and_possible_compatibility/

    Current Build: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/bRgfTC

Thanks to u/sch232 I had a rough idea what to look for with my budget and needs, the former i managed to stretch. I've decided not bother with the PS5 for another year or two and truly reignite my love for PC gaming.

The parts I'll salvage from my old rig:

    -750W Silver Rated PSU

-60GB SSD & 1TB HDD used for OS & media respectively

-A comfortably large Fractal tower with decent sound and temp insulation (idk the terminology, sorry)

-possibly the CPU cooler, I'm unsure whether my current one will fit the motherboard I have in mind, but i doubt it.

I use a 1440p 60Hz monitor but will be planning on upgrading to 120/144 eventually.

    Anyway here is what i have so far;

    https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/qCw2sk

u/MyLoveHammer commented that i wont need such an extortionate motherboard as AMD send a second CPU to update BIOS, is this fairly easy to do?

For how much I'm spending, around £600 before selling old parts, is this system a good price for it's performance?

Any other advice or places to buy (I live in Glasgow) would be greatly appreciated,

    Thanks!

I'm building a PC, but can't find a motherboard that supports a USB-C slot on my case

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 12:28 PM PDT

Hello everybody, Niv here, looking for some help! Recently, my main PC has been dying slowly, and I feel the need to replace it. Seeing everybody making AMD builds, I decided to look into making one myself.

With that being said, my build has run into a problem, due to the case I use. See, I use the NZXT H510 ATX Mid Tower Case, because it looks nice aesthetically, but more importantly, because I play with an oculus quest. This seems like a strange thing, but my grandmother bought me a quest, and I've enjoyed messing around with connecting it to my PC. This uses a USB-C to USB-C port, which my case just so happens to have.

so, simply, I would like to know with my current build list here, if there are any motherboards that would work with my USB-C slot. thanks a lot!

I can finally come home and play my favorite games! Thank you so much r/buildapc. I couldn't have done it without you guys!

It's quite a stressful moment to be a healthcare worker, but nothing like coming home to your new build to play your favorite games and relax top be ready for the next day.

After being financially crippled without a PC for almost 3 years due to a long immigration process that didn't allow me to work and left me saving all the pennies for years, I finally managed to spare some money for my build and I'm extremely happy about it! So I wanted to share it with you guys.

Can't get a post on a new build

    Troubleshooting Help:

I'm working on my second-ever build, replacing a i5-2500k system I built about 8 years ago. I have everything but the SSD (which is still in the mail), and I have hooked everything up but can't get a POST.

The fans all spin up, including the cpu cooler fan. There are 4 indicator LEDs on the board, CPU/DRAM/VGA/BOOT. Only the CPU LED lights up. I am pretty sure that I seated the CPU, cooler, and RAM correctly. I am wondering if maybe I need to update BIOS? Any help is appreciated.
