This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Don't be like me when switching from Nvidia to amd...

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 06:49 AM PDT

Holy, basically I had a EVGA GTX 750 Ti which is severely outdated for modern games. After contemplating upgrading, I decided to buy a used RX 570 for cheap 2nd hand and wait for the next gen stuff. Thought it was a simple plug and play situation. NOPE. Make sure you absolutely delete EVERYTHING on your comp having to do with NVIDIA before trying to install an AMD GPU. I messed my rig up real nice. Kept freezing at the windows sign in screen. Even slotting the 750 Ti back in didn't fix it. Also had doubts I bought a faulty used card. In the end I had to reinstall windows after hours of debugging. TLDR always clean up previous drivers before installing when switching from Nvidia to AMD or vice versa.

    I...screwed up. Big.

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 06:02 PM PDT

I was doing an upgrade, new R5 3600, new 5700xt. Found out I needed a new power supply, went from a EVGA 550w to a Seasonic 650w, had a truly fun time changing parts out and reorganizing cables. It was a fun Friday night. Now here's where I have a problem.

I reused the Sata cable from EVGA because I didn't want to pull the drives and mess with any of that. Closed it all up and tried turning it on...and heard a pop. 8 hours and 6 tear downs later 2 HDD and 1 SSD are fried. Over 6tb of drives are kaput, they won't even spin up as best I can tell...turns out the SATA cables for Seasonic are completely different than EVGA cables.

We aren't just talking about games, saves and Plex servers, and normal things you don't want to lose, I've lost all the pictures and videos my wife and I took for the last 11 years of our lives together, every picture of ours kids growing up, every first video of anything ever. Pictures and videos of her last visit with her Grandfather, all of the copies of important paperwork.

One of these drives was our backup while we put together a true server, I never thought anything would happen to this drive. I'm devastated.

We've been doing some googling and some people say that you can rebuild drives if you get the exact same model...and have a clean room...is there any truth to that? Does anyone have any experience? I'm desperate.

(Update: Lots and lots of comments, with quite a lot of points I'd like to respond to. I saved up for 6 months to buy these new parts, I'm donating my old parts to my daughters for a decent system for them to play, and do schoolwork on. I can't return these parts just to have to buy them again later. The data will keep I hope and I can do something about this another day. To those pushing cloud storage, I don't trust it on my iPhone, I certainly won't trust it with sensitive documents and pictures of my children, and frankly, my wife's nudes. We all saw the fallout from the Fappening. I also can't put all of my stuff into a cloud because I had my plex server on that drive...and I'm positive you understand my meaning.

I also can't pay extra for "offsite" secure storage because of other obligations to my family. My oldest daughter is type 1 diabetic and that's why I had to save for so long before buying my parts. I have emergency funds, that I will NOT dip into for something like this, when there are far more important emergencies I have to watch out for, just last week I had dip into the fund to buy a new tire for my car after a blowout, to get back and forth to work, and had to replace that money this week.

Some people offered to help fund the recovery. You are the best of our community, I appreciate you more than you could believe. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I don't know that I can justify you doing that for such a trivial thing.

Someone linked a site that has replacement PCB's I'm going to try that first, as that should be the only real problem. Also that's significantly cheaper. The ssd I'm not worried about. It only held games, one 4tb drive held the important items, I'm going to start there. The 2tb drive was mostly just overflow, and unorganized crap I didn't know what to do with. Wish me luck.

Custom Water Cooled Dual Xeon (24 Core 48 Thread) Server Build Complete

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 11:03 AM PDT

Wanted to share a fun server upgrade I just completed. Old server had an old Athlon x4 750k CPU that was otherwise meeting my needs (media NAS mostly) until I decided I wanted more. I wanted something more powerful to run virtual machines, Plex transcodes, and do handbrake transcoding on the server (freeing up my 8700k/GTX 1080 rig). I could have gone with a Ryzen build but decided I wanted to find and re-purpose something with a dual socket. I was able to find an HP Z820 for $180 that came with everything besides CPU, RAM, and a CPU Cooler. To my surprise it also came with the upgraded 1125 W PSU which actually is rated for 1275 Watts when the input voltage is over 105 V (which is no problem with the UPS I am using). I then purchased the CPUs (two E5-2696 V2) for $250 total and everything I needed to make a custom water loop.

The system scores 5,489 on Cinebench R20 (running within a Windows VM, so some VM overhead loss) and is able to transcode 4K footage on Handbrake to H.265 10 bit at ~9-12 FPS on average.

    Here is the result: https://imgur.com/a/q5FudQc

    Full Specs:

    • Unraid OS
    • HP Z820 -- dual socket LGA 2011
    • Dual Xeon E5-2696 v2 -- 12 Core / 24 Thread -- 2.5GHz base & 3.3GHz boost -- CPUs are slightly lower clocked OEM Intel version of the 2697 v2
    • 16 GB ECC 1866MHz DDR3 Ram
    • 7 HDDs in Unraid Parity for 12.7TB Usable Storage -- Mix of 3TB WD Red HDDs and two 1TB Seagate HDDs
    • Integrated LSI SAS 2308 Controller
    • Icy Dock FlexCage (MB974SP-B) 4 Drive Hard Drive Hot Swap Backplane
    • WD Red SA500 NAS 500GB 3D NAND SSD -- Used as Unraid Cache Drive
    • Alphacool Eisstation Pump/Reservoir Combo
    • MagiCool Premium Dual 80mm x 46mm Radiator
    • 2x Phobya UC-2 LT CPU Blocks
    • EK DuraClear 3/8" x 5/8" Soft Tubing
    • Two ARCTIC P8 PWM PST CO 80 mm fans for the radiator
    • Nvidia GT 730 (Replacing with my GTX 1080 FTW2 GPU from my desktop when the new Nvidia/AMD GPUs launch)

CPU temps are 30C at idle and ~56C at full load on both CPUs (74-76F ambient room temp).

Any questions, feel free to ask! Thanks for reading.

GPU Usage jumps from 0%, to 100% and low Wattage

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 04:07 AM PDT

I just built my pc, and it was performing just fine for a day or two. Today I started experiencing some weird behaviour with my GPU (ROG Strix rx570 O8G).

The GPU usage is at 0% most of the time, but sometimes suddenly jumps to 100% for a few seconds.

Does anyone have any idea of what is causing this problem, and how I can fix it.

    Ps:

    - I already turned my pc off and on a few times... ;)

Edit: I forgot to say that my GPU's Wattage is really low as well, it is around 16 W most of the time.

Edit 2: Problem solved! Thanks to: u/Juli_324

    Don't make drunk purchases.

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 12:53 PM PDT

Drunk johnbabyhunter decided that after an hour of looking for sweet sweet cheap RGB CPU coolers, that he would just buy the next one going on eBay. Despite thinking it was a Wraith Prism and paying £20, sober johnbabyhunter discovered it was just an ordinary Wraith Spire. Johnbabyhunter already owns a Wraith Spire and it only typically sells for £5.

    Is 600w enough for a 5700xt and Ryzen 3700x?

Grinding noise from 1660 Super fans at high RPM, should I be worried?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 10:37 AM PDT

When my Gigabyte 1660 Super 6GB OC fans spin up to max RMP they make this grinding noise that can be heard along with the normal fan/wind noise

In this video I ramp the fans up from zero to 100% in stages, you can hear the noise briefly at the start, then it starts to kick in around the 00:15 mark, then you can hear it clearly at 00:22 when the fans are at 100%.

Is that normal? Should I be worried?

It's well within warranty as I only bought it in February.

    Flight Simulator/ General Gaming Build

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 09:02 AM PDT

I want to build a new PC primarily for the upcoming Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 but for general gaming as well. I've been out of the loop of PC components for a few years so I put this together based on some other posts I've seen. I want to pick up most of the components within a month or two of each other in case I need to return something so it will be a few months until I purchase, but I may pick up pieces like the monitor earlier if there is a good deal. If there are ways that I could make it more efficient or trim some fat that would be great but I can wiggle the budget a little bit either way. For example, is the Ryzen 7 a prudent choice compared to the Ryzen 5 3600 or is it overkill for the rest of the build?

    Storage recommendations

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 11:36 AM PDT

I've completed my first pc build last month, it is not exactly what I previously posted on this forum but it is similarly spec'd and saved me even more money which made my pockets very happy.

Now that I have finished building my pc and going through the initial setup, I am looking into increasing my storage space. I am not to sure what separates drives from each other but I am looking for a 2TB hard drive to work in conjunction with my other external ssds for mass storage. I intend on placing games and finished projects on the hard drive and keep current work on my internal ssd.

Any recommendations for a good hard drive worth the value?

Is the XFX THICC III Ultra 5700XT a good buy & are there still driver issues?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 11:35 AM PDT

I found the XFX - THICC III Ultra AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT for $409.99 on Newegg/BestBuy. From my research, apparently drivers were/are an issue with this card. I've been looking around, and comments range from people having no issues to people saying they have nothing but issues. It's very conflicting, and I don't want to drop $400 and have black screens and crashes.

    1. Is this a good price for this card? Or can it be found cheaper elsewhere?
    2. Is this the best model of the 5700XT or are there cheaper models that perform the same?
    3. Have you guys had any issues with the card recently or have the bugs been worked out?

Hey all! I haven't built myself a new computer in quite a while. I wanted to post my plan here to see if there are any suggestions/edits I should make before I start purchasing parts. Thanks for the help!

FYI, I plan on reusing my current case and power supply, which are included in this list. I'm pretty sure they should work just fine with current components, but if you see something that is off, let me know.

EDIT: I plan on using this PC for gaming. I do not have a monitor selected yet. I need to upgrade that as well as mine is a 720p monitor from 2010.

    SSD Installation Help

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 01:57 PM PDT

I'm going to buy a 970 evo plus to put my OS onto as I currently only have a HDD. If I just remove my hard drive, install Windows again on my SSD, reinstall the HDD and set the correct boot order in BIOS, will this work or will the two boot drives interfere with each other? Also if it does work will things such as my desktop icons move over or is that a part of the OS?

Any help will be greatly appreciated as I am a first time builder.

    Need new power supply

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 08:53 AM PDT

    Hi all,

My brother had a friend who was able to get me a geforce rtx 2070 xc ultra for $200. Couldn't very well turn that down, as it's going for $800 on Amazon currently. I have been using a gtx 970 for the last 5 years in a 10 year old Dell XPS 8500 with i7 and 16 rams. It still does great for gaming but it has started to hit it's ceiling with some of the higher end stuff. I don't really have a whole lot of experience building computers, just swapping out ram, adding an ssd and said video card. The issue is that my current power supply is 480w and the 2070 needs 650w. Don't know if I want to transplant everything to a new case with a new power supply, as the 2070 just barely fit in the xps case, or get a 750w power supply to replace the current one. My biggest worry is that if I get a new power supply, it will be different dimensions and the screws won't line up. I was told most power supplies these days are modular and you need to buy the wires for each component as well. I looked for something that would be compatible with my computer but didn't see anything above 500w. Thanks for any advice!

The dimensions for the current power supply are 8 x 7.2 x 4.9

Found a computer on the sidewalk

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 02:32 PM PDT

I have been thinking about building my own PC for the last 6 months-or-so, but had to put it off until next year due to our recent move to Boston and the cost of furniture.

Today, however, the computer gods noticed my sadness and answered my prayers. While walking to the farmers market to buy veg for the week, I stumbled upon a fairly large black box, sitting on the sidewalk, basking in the sun with a note that said "It works, needs hard drive." I couldn't believe it, a working PC that someone kicked to the curb? I picked that bad boy up and carried it the mile home where I cleaned it up, plugged it in, and sure enough....It works.

I believe it's about 6-7 years old and I wanted to consult the r/buildapc community to ask for advice on what you would do with this PC. Do you buy a few upgrades? Do you sell it for parts and build a new PC with that money? Or would you put it right back out on the street with a third-party confirmation that it is indeed working?

Any advice helps. Here's a list of what's inside:

CPU: Intel Core i7-3770K 3.5 GHz Quad-Core Processor

CPU Cooler: Intel E97379-001 CPU Cooler

Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth Z77 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard

    Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR3-1866 CL10 Memory

Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 770 2 GB TWIN FROZR Video Card

Case: Thermaltake Chaser MK-I ATX Full Tower Case (This things huge)

Power Supply: Thermaltake Smart M 750 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply

Post-Cleaning pics (still have some work to do):

I am new to building PC's. This would be my first build. This list is heavily based on the great list on PC part picker with a few changes to try and save on costs.

My budget is around £1000. But that includes a copy of Windows 10.

As the title says if you could change one part from the above what would you change? I'm open to all suggestions. Could be better value, but worse/better performance.

As I am new to building PC's any and all advise is welcome.

Fresh built pc won't start after previously working an hour earlier

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 11:31 AM PDT

Built a new pc today, I plugged everything in and it started up into the bios just fine then booted into windows. I set it up in windows, turned the pc off and unplugged it to do cable management. When I plugged everything back into the power supply and plugged it into the wall it refused to start. I checked all the connections again and they are all correct. Only the mother board lights up but only partly so. The lights turn on the logos but in the top right where you normally get a number to see error codes or temps, that part of the mother board doesn't turn on. The cpu, gpu, fans, radiator, everything connected to the mother board or the power supply doesn't turn on at all or light up. Tried to clear cmos on the bios via the button in the back io/shield and nothing happened.

I am completely dumbfounded as to what to do next. Here are the parts list, everything is brand new:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/sneakymcpete/saved/#view=WGTcTW

Here are pictures that might help diagnose the problem. Including a picture of what the pc and mother board looks like when I turn it on now:

    https://imgur.com/gallery/zGBwVYx?s=sms

Edit: Pulled power supply out of new build and put it in an older tower I built, the power supply works perfect in old tower.

Tried running the computer with only the bare minimum to post (one stick of ram, cpu connected, etc..) it still didn't fire up at all.

16x PCIE Epansion card for new ITX build.

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 01:38 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I am hoping someone can provide some guidance or point me in the right direction. I am currently building a 2 in 1 system using a Phanteks Enthoo 719. Here is a quick breakdown of what is going on. Right now I have two separate systems. I have an Unraid Server running on an old i7 3770K proc and mobo. And I recently built myself a small personal ITX system with a new AMD Ryzen 7 3700x that I use to edit my videos and do a little gaming.

Anyway I decided that I wanted to retire the i7 system, do away with the two cases and move my Unraid server to the AMD Ryzen 7 system, and build myself a new AMD Threadripper system for editing and put both of these in the single Enthoo case to save some space around my desk.

Here is where my hang up is and why I haven't proceeded yet. In my Unraid server I run two cards, a NVIDIA PNY Quadro P2000 for plex Hardware trans-coding, and a Dell PERC H310 for all my drives. The issue is that the Mini ITX motherboard I have only has one 16x PCIE slot.

So I am looking for an adapter or expansion card that will allow me to go from one 16x PCIE lane to two, or one 16x and one 8x because the NVIDIA card is a 16x PCIE card and the Dell SAS controller card is a 8x PCIE card.

So if anyone has a recommendation please let me know because this is the only thing holding me up right now. I know I could swap the systems around and run the Unraid on the full size ATX and my editing system on the ITX but I want to overclock the system and run an AIO and there is no room for that on the ITX side of things on this case. So I would rather run the Unraid server on the ITX with an air cooler as it doesn't really have a heavy load (primarily just plex) and it will run in stock trim.

Anyway thanks in advance for your help and suggestions! Looking forward to your replies!
