    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

My brother made a really stupid mistake with his new build today

    Posted: 02 May 2020 04:01 PM PDT

    Some background:

I've been building pc's for friends and as a side gig for at least a decade now and if any friend of my friends needs a part list they always just defer to me. I usually don't charge even to assemble it for them, as we all know this is something some of us just like doing for other people and we've done enough stupid things building pc's to know exactly what to do and more importantly what not to do. This is fortunately a case of the former rather than the latter.

My brother just called me in a panic, he bought a new motherboard, cpu, ram and power supply and he assembled it all outside of his case to make sure it all worked correctly before tearing his system down and I'm on the phone with him for like an hour asking him a million different questions and I'm just absolutely stumped and I'm literally about to ask him, "If I come over with a mask and a bunch of sanitizer is that okay? Because without seeing something I might just be missing it" and as a last ditch effort before I get my stuff and head over there I just think to ask him: "Tell me exactly what happens from the moment you short the front panel power connector to when you realize it's not gonna POST, give me the play by play" and he just goes "what do you mean short the front panel connectors".

He had just been flipping on the power supply switch and assumed it would all boot up by itself since his current pc has a power button on the motherboard 🙃

Ryzen 5 3600 CPU spikes to 86°C when gaming

    Posted: 03 May 2020 12:17 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I made a post yesterday saying that my CPU with the stock cooler spiked briefly (for a half a second) to 75°C when doing nothing other than installing a game.

Today I tested out the game for about five minutes (CS:GO) and although the temperature was averaging around 70°C it spiked momentarily to a max temp of 86°C. I was using HWMonitor to test the temps.

I'm going to try remounting the cooler and applying more thermal paste to see if that helps, but if it doesn't, is there another way I can get lower temps?

I'll also add another case fan as well.

    Need Help With New Build

    Posted: 03 May 2020 09:46 AM PDT

I built a PC just over 4 years ago. Not very expensive, but not a horrendous PC. The specs of it are:

    • 4th Generation Intel Core™ i5 4460 3.2GHz Socket LGA1150
    • XFX Radeon R9 380 Double Dissipation 4GB GDDR5
    • Seagate ST1000DM003 Barracuda 1TB 3.5 inch Hard Drive
    • HyperX FURY Series 8GB (2x 4GB) DDR3 1866MHz CL10 DIMM Memory Module Kit - Black
    • Corsair VS550 ATX/EPS Vs Series 550 W 80 Plus Power Supply Unit
    • Samsung SH-224FB/RSMS 24X Internal DVD Writer with SATA
    • MSI H81M-E34 Intel Micro ATX Motherboard (LAN, VGA, HDMI, DVI)
    • Corsair CC-9011050-WW Carbide Series SPEC-01 Mid-Tower ATX Gaming Case with Red LED Fan - Black.

As of the past month or so it has started to deteriorate and looking to build a new PC. Part of me wants to build a whole new PC as i loved building it when i did this build for the first time 4 years ago. Then another part of me wants to keep costs low.

So what my main question is, what parts can i keep from my current PC?

I was assuming i would be able to keep the DVD writer and HDD along with adding an SSD. Also wondering about the case? What is the difference between this case or if i was to change to a newer more expensive one?

So just wondering what parts i can keep, what parts i should replace and what parts i need to replace.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Looking to Upgrade a Gaming Computer

    Posted: 03 May 2020 04:12 AM PDT

Hi, I'm an old guy who plays things like Fallout 4, No Man's Sky and Savage Planet. I'd like to upgrade my computer for better gaming and I was hoping someone could give me some advice as to some option to improve what I've got. I'm not a millionaire so I can't go crazy. But I figured if I could get a list, from "OMG CHANGE THIS NOW!!" at the top to "It Would Be Nice" at the bottom I can slowly change things out on my computer. Here is my system as checked by User Benchmark:

    UserBenchmarks: Game 47%, Desk 67%, Work 49%

    CPU: Intel Core i7-3770 - 68.9%

    GPU: AMD RX 480 - 46.4%

    SSD: Samsung 850 Evo 250GB - 87.2%

    HDD: WD RE4 1TB (2010) - 76.5%

    EXTERNAL HD: WD My Passport 071A 750GB - 17.3%

    RAM: Hynix HMT41GU6MFR8C-PB 2x8GB - 56.8%

    MBD: Msdinredmond SABERTOOTH Z77

    Motherboard: ASUSTeK SABERTOOTH Z77

Memory: 9 GB free of 16 GB @ 1.6 GHz

    Display: 1920 x 1080 - 32 Bit colors

    OS: Windows 10

    BIOS Date: 20130314

Any suggestions (or even suggestions where to look) would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Help with finishing my little brothers PC?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 10:23 AM PDT

My little brother is building his first PC, I built one like 3 years but I had a lot of help from this sub and I'd like a bit more! He sent me this list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/VDVwZf

Any feedback, or an update would be great. we are already on the higher end of the budget so preferably no more expensive than what it already is.

I told him I think the Ryzen 3 is kind of dated? that's all I know

Dumb noob question about switching PCs

    Posted: 03 May 2020 08:28 AM PDT

So I have a fairly old pc that I bought from a friend 2 years ago and I want to upgrade and build my own. So I was wondering, if I put my current HDD from my old PC into my new one, would everything just boot up normally? (If windows was downloaded onto the HDD)

Edit: can confirm my windows is downloaded on the HDD, I know it's not the smartest people say but whatever

    Posted: 03 May 2020 11:18 AM PDT

    hello

im not a novice at this ive been building computers for quite a while but i cant seem to find what im looking for.

so i want to build a passive pc (non gaming) but my main issue is trying to buy a motherboard and PSU that dont emit a buzzing or high frequency sound under load. ive used many computers over the years that were high end motherboards and PSUs and half of them emit this sound.

what should i be looking for that can assure me that they wont be making noise.

    thank you

    HHD to SSD Conversion

    Posted: 03 May 2020 01:26 PM PDT

Hey there this is my first time posting here I hope I'm following all the flair rules correctly.

So basically I work from home as a graphic designer and it is finally time to upgrade my work station. I'd like to speed up my system with an SSD swap from my hard drive and use the hard drive as storage for my files in projects. I already have 1 SSD and 1 HDD dedicated to just gaming and other stuff but an SSD for my Boot and OS seems to be the next step for improving performance. Ideally, I would like to simply clone the HDD with the OS and all my software and project files over to the new SSD but preliminary searches have all but said this is hopeless. This is what I read so far:

    • SSD will improve load times
    • SSD will improve performance when I'm gaming on the side as I already have 16 gigabytes of ram and a 1050 TI which is sufficient for most of my needs.
    • I will need an SSD equal or greater in size to the current hard drive capacity not the files in use in order to clone it with most software.
    • SSD is more reliable as far as failure rates which I just replaced the hard drive recently because the first one failed but it never crossed my mind to grab an SSD
    • there does not seem to be any free software for cloning so any recommendations would be appreciated if I'm gonna pay for it I wanna get the best one.
    • Most reddit post that I've seen so far say you're better off just cherry-picking the files you wanna carry over after reinstalling the OS on the SSD and then reinstalling all of your programs which yeah I can make a list of that but that would literally probably be a 2 or 3-day project in and of itself when you think about program extensions for Adobe stuff and scripts and actions I purchased or made. I'd like to avoid that if possible

And that's really all I know so far. So any help or articles you can link me to would be very much appreciated.

I'm available to answer any questions you guys might have that will help S find a solution for sure. OH the HHD is only 250gb and I am eyeing a 500gb SSD I believe it is a WD Blue series.

So I have £600 for a pc but I know literally nothing about building them. For now I just want a pc that can run most games and I'll worry about upgrading it later. If you could suggest a build or just send a good tutorial I'd be super appreciative! I already have a mouse, keyboard and headset.

One Tempurature on my motherboard sits around 90c after use, any ideas on why?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 09:18 AM PDT

Hey all, just built my first pc and temps are all good except for an item listed as "Temperature 4" under the motherboard part of HWInfo. This upon boot up was 83c and after running for a few hours was 93c. I don't know why or how this is because all of my other temperatures (Cpu, gpu, etc) are around 30-40 with spikes up to 50 during games. I'm concerned but don't know what to do or if this is even an issue.

    SSD unimaginably slow

    Posted: 03 May 2020 01:01 PM PDT

Recently I had noticed that my games were taking significantly longer to load than usual, and after running a few tests I had discovered my SSD has been seriously underperforming. I had cleaned, delete old files, checked everything, and yet it still runs at the speed of a snail. I was hoping that I could get some help here. The SSD has only been in use for 5 months.

    Haven't built in 10+ years

    Posted: 03 May 2020 01:00 PM PDT

With all the working from home, I figure it's time to upgrade my home experience with a new build. I am a software developer and the only game I play is Rocksmith. I haven't built in yeeeaaars so have no idea what is good anymore for money. I live in the US a d my budget is 800 with a max of 1k. I don't need a fancy case as it will go under my desk. My current machine is a Surface Book 2which Hasan i7 and 16 GB of RAM. I want to be able to power 2 4k displays. I took a look at Partpicker, but just get lost. Any help would be appreciated.

Building around a gifted part - Ryzen 7 3700X CPU

    Posted: 03 May 2020 12:55 PM PDT

A friend sent the mentioned Ryzen 3700X in the mail, and I'm looking to build a new PC around it with some tax return money.

I built my existing gaming machine about 10 years ago, and have upgraded individual pieces over time, and am not researched on the current landscape.

With this CPU as my base, and the goal being maxed out gaming at 1080p, and the best streaming quality possible (my wife has a Twitch channel) - I'm looking to spend somewhere in the 1200-1300 range for the rest of the tower. This PC will also be used for art/animation/music creation, so a good bank of RAM is needed.

The case will be pretty and RGB will happen, but I'm just looking for core parts.

Are the Nvidia GPUs still ahead of AMDs in the current market, and would having AMD for both components be preferable?

Who makes the best MOBOs these days, and is it still a part you can afford to go cheap on without losing any real performance?

I'm guessing Samsung still has the best SSDs, and the newer tiny ones that fit straight into the MOBO are worth the money, at least for a boot drive?

I'm 100% open to just a total parts list if someone feels like making one, but just looking to get a lay of the land as I start shopping, I've been away from the market for a while.

    PC for 6 camera surveillance

    Posted: 03 May 2020 09:43 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm looking for some help in building a pc that would be able to handle a 6 camera system with a minimum storage capacity of 30 days of video. I'm new to building a surveillance pc and want to make sure I'm not overbuilding for such a simple operation. If you have any recommendations or if there's been system builds for this previously, any help would be appreciated!

What m.2 NVMe SSD to get?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 01:48 PM PDT

I needed more fast storage, and I have an m.2 slot with PCIe3 support (Up to 32Gb/s), so I thought why not upgrade my speed, too. Currently using a 500GB SATA SSD as my boot drive, and I would be cloning it to the NVMe and making that my new boot drive. I want 1TB of storage for the NVMe drive, but can live with down to 500GB. I don't have a hard limit on budget, but would like to keep it to around $120 USD or less if possible. I know very little about what ones are reliable or which have DRAM or not, etc., so it would be very helpful if someone could help. Thank you. My motherboard is an Asrock B450 Pro4, so while I do have a Zen 2 CPU (3800x), I do not have PCIe4 support.
