    Simple Questions - April 23, 2020

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 05:10 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

I love messing around with different homelab builds. I've had custom rack mount servers, HP mini PCs, and some Dell servers. Space is a big concern for me, so I wanted an all-in-one solution. Here's my new baby!

Everything with $0 was old stuff lying around. I already had all the drives from a previous server (except one of the SSDs) and the GPU, which is only used for getting the server setup. I purchased a few of the parts off of eBay (CPUs, motherboard, and PSU), the RAM I found from a random little store in New York via google (for a really good price too), and the rest of the parts were bought off of craigslist/facebook marketplace.

The passive coolers that came with the motherboard just aren't good enough for the 95w TDP processors, so I have those cheap upHere coolers coming in next week.

This build is going to mostly be used for Plex, Minecraft/Rust server, File server, and my firewall. I have yet to decide what to do with these SSDs, so if you have any idea, let me know! I think I might just RAID 0 them all for some fast network storage.

    1080ti vs 5700xt

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 07:04 AM PDT

Hi guys, got the above dilemma.

    Currently using a 3900x with 980ti.

I can get a brand new Gigabyte 1080ti gaming OC or a MSI Gaming X Trio for ~USD$505 or a 1 month old Sapphire Pulse 5700 XT @ ~USD$420.

Someone wants to buy my 980ti right now so I figured i'll jump on either of these cards.

Which would you guys pick? The prices in my country are a little bit crappy.

Most used 1080ti's are at around the $480 mark and the 5700xt's for slightly more.

Would want to future proof for 1440p 144hz, mostly play csgo and COD/PUBG style titles

I've been saving and ready to buy a 2080ti, or do I wait?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 10:27 PM PDT

I built my first PC in 2013 and upgraded my GPU a few years back to a 1060 6GB and its been great. I've been saving up for a while now and am planning on rebuilding my PC from scratch with all the new bells and whistles.I have been planning my build the last month or two I set my heart on the 2080ti as the target best gaming card available as I don't use my PC as a workstation. However as I've been watching a few videos and reading some articles it sounds like the "3080" is right around the corner this fall. So is it worth it to wait? Since it always seems like the next best card is on its way? Any advice will help just looking for some more opinions.

    build upgrades? (i5 4690k/gtx 970)

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 08:45 AM PDT

I built this PC 4-5 years ago:

    • i5 4690k w/ Hyper 212 Evo
    • Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming
    • ASUS Z97-AR
    • 16 GB Kingston DDR3 HyperX Fury
    • S340 case, fans, and some storage

Question is, is there any point to upgrading any parts in this system? It seems like my stuff is so old that it doesn't make much sense to.

If I upgrade the GPU, I can only get maybe a 1070 before I get bottlenecks. I can get a 2070 Super for the same price as a 1070.

If I upgrade the CPU, I need to upgrade the motherboard and ram as well, which could end up being pricey. That might be a good option though, and then I can upgrade the GPU down the road.

I don't really want to spend a thousand dollars on a new PC, I just thought it would be fun to upgrade (I have a software engineering internship this summer that I will be making a fair amount of money from)

I'm leaning towards upgrading the storage (2-3 TB of SSDs) and getting a CPU watercooler (x63 kraken) and just overclocking the shit out of my computer. I already have some good fans and thermal paste on standby. I mean I really don't NEED more PC power, I literally just play rocket league and CSGO. I might play new RPGs like fallout or borderlands but I haven't had problems running those two on medium so far. I have a 144hz monitor so I usually like to get 100+ fps if I can

Thanks guys let me know what you think

Upgrade or Hold Off for New Build

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 02:36 PM PDT

Hey Guys! I built my PC a little over 4 years ago and so far it has been great. However, I fear I'm starting to see it's age in some of the more demanding games. I have been able to play many first person shooters such as Battlefield and Battlefront on high graphics settings without any issues. However, I have gotten really interested in flight simulators and play a lot on DCS. Some of the higher graphic settings cause some slight lag. I also have experienced Borderlands 3 crashing during fast paced gun fights.

I'm kicking around the idea of upgrading my GPU (with anticipation of moving it to a new build within a couple years). However, If you guys think the rest of my computer will bottleneck it, I would rather save money and build a whole new computer down the road. Below is my current build.

If I were to upgrade my GPU, I would look at something like the RTX 2070 (https://www.newegg.com/gigabyte-geforce-rtx-2070-super-gv-n207swf3oc-8gd/p/N82E16814932213?&quicklink=true)

Eventually, the goal would be to change the CPU (and compatible motherboard), RAM, and GPU. What are your guys thoughts?

Building my first ever pc, have no clue what im doing. Need Help! 800-950 euros

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 09:34 AM PDT

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Basically this pc is intended just for gaming, hoping to get frames above 100. ill be doing little school work here and there but nothing major, just word documents etc.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

The perfomance im mainly looking for is 1080p minimum 100 fps (at games where it's possible) I'm not looking for ultra high settings but high game settings would be nice

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

850-1000 is the max i can do. I have everything else ready (monitor, mouse etc, just need the pc)

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    The Netherlands

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I don't really care about running every game on ultra settings and then expecting to run 100fps+. i just want decent graphics to ensure i can run 100fps on games such as warzone, valorant, fortnite, apex legends, gta and rocket league. if u do decide to help me i would appreciate that a lot!!

Parts are starting to come in the mail and I still haven't ordered any monitors! Help?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 02:25 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming. Particularly online, fps, and a LOT of Kerbal Space Program

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

The highest performance monitor my computer would need. I don't want any of its performance to be lost on the display (of course)

Honestly, whatever it costs. I don't want to overpay but I will pay for what I need.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

USA. (The pcpartpicker list shows euros, but disregard)

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I've been thinking double monitors so I can keep orbital data on one screen and spacecraft display on the other. I'm also a huge sucker for curved monitors so if it's possible I'd probably do two curved? Ultra-wide even? Is that not recommended? I also just don't know what type of monitor I would even need.

NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.

If you have to pick between higher resolution or higher refresh rate, always pick refresh rate.

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 02:22 PM PDT

I can't even begin to explain how much better my 1080p 144hz monitor feels versus a 4k60hz tv. It takes less gpu power to drive it, and the change in latency is ridiculous. Now when I move the mouse, I expect it to move with me immediately.

Anyway, if you are looking at new monitors, high refresh rate is better than higher resolution every day of the week. Just my opinion.

Build design for high ambient temperature room/garage in summer

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 02:17 PM PDT

    Hi y'all

Labelled this discussion since I'm not looking for specific help and it may be relevant to others with summer coming up.

Looking to build a gaming PC / workstation in a non-insultated, no-AC garage that will be ~80F in the summer. Anyone have experience or tips for similar builds? Garage is the only option due to space so moving to a cooler room is not possible. Tried searching but can't find much relevant info.

Will use water cooling though don't have experience with it. From preliminary research it looks like distilled water is fine compared to other coolants. Build will be in a large case optimized for water cooling (looking at Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic or a full ATX) to fit large radiators while keeping space and airflow open. Haven't decided on GPU though researching ones that are more efficient and don't run hot. Case will be in a location with good airflow and will also use an external room fan to keep airflow around case moving.

    Any other ideas?

Trying to run CoD Modern Warfare on a MSI GT60 - GTX780M

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 02:14 PM PDT

    Hi Everyone,

I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask, but I've been trying to play the new Call of Duty Modern Warfare, specifically the Warzone feature, and I can't seem to get above 25 FPS on my MSI GT60.

    Here are the specs:

    Intel i7-4700MQ
    Nvidia GTX 780M - 4gb

Is there something I'm missing? I know that my laptop is a bit old now, but I'm surprised it won't even run the game smoothly on the lowest settings. Please help!

Bought a brand new 2080ti on offerup

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 02:09 PM PDT

I bought an unopened 2080ti from someone who looked like a reputable seller on offerup. I picked it up, everything was fine, he even emailed me his evga purchase confirmation and his PayPal invoice confirming he bought it.

However I tried registering the serial number on evga and it said there was an issue. I contacted evga and they said the original buyer disputed the transaction and there was a charge back for the card. I cannot get the warranty until the charge back is canceled or the card is returned.

Is there anything I can do in this situation? I would really hate to not have warranty on this product. Thanks.
