    Simple Questions - April 18, 2020

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 05:10 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

I'm building my first PC and was originally planning to purchase a i7 CPU Motherboard combo but have been seeing alot of people recommend the Ryzen AMD's, which of the following would you guys recommend, if any?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 04:11 AM PDT

As title states, i have a pre-built PC that i bought about 5 years ago and was looking for a lockdown project, so decided to build my own since I'm due for an upgrade anyway.

I was originally recommend the Intel package but after looking around alot of people are suggesting AMD, So i found a similarly priced package, would anyone recommend either of these?

Why do I hear someone's voice from my computer?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 10:35 AM PDT

Hi, hopefully you'll be able to help me: a few days ago i came back to my pc and clearly heard someone saying "sup" (i didnt had the headphones on, so it was a pretty clear sound), at first I thought I left a page open (like a livestream or whatever), but I didn't. Since then , I'd say once per day (3 times I think) I heard someone talking, but it was always a word or two , so I wasn't able to record it. I don't think this is to "troll" me because once I heard them saying "oh, wow" but my mic was off (manually) and my cam was not connected, i was doing nothing. I haven't downloaded anything new and hadn't done any updates. I read some posts online but what makes it way more weird is that I'm Italian, and I live in Italy. I run my antivirus everytime I hear it but nothing new. It never happened before, haven't got any other "red flags" so I think this isn't intentional (I hope), but thats creepy

    What can I do?

    Thanks already

Discussion: Has anyone here ever bought old used parts to "relive" their very first gaming rig?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 05:15 AM PDT

My very first gaming rig (that I built from scratch in 2008!) had a Core 2 Duo E7200, 2GB DDR2 RAM, and a GeForce 8800GT. I've been feeling bored and nostalgic and been thinking about rebuilding it. Looking at the parts on eBay, it wouldn't cost me more than $200 total lol.

Anyone ever build PCs with obsolete parts as a side project?

Switching from 9th gen i5 to Ryzen 3900x

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 05:35 AM PDT

Hello I bought a pc from digital store about a year ago and now I want to do a massive upgrade. I'm working from home now and I'm not the best with computer building. I have a i5 9600k and I want to 3000 series ryzen but I have heard that people are building PCs but the motherboards aren't updated to the the latest bios to accept the newer cpus from amd. Is there a way to tell if a motherboard is compatible before buying the mother board? Other than it having a am4 socket

    RX 580 exploded my font

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 11:19 AM PDT

Hi guys, I just bought and installed a RX 580 but my font (generic 500w) exploded after a few days using it normally. So, I have two questions:

    1. Have I lost my entire pc?
    2. What's the best and cheapest font that I can buy to support my PC setup if it still work?

    My PC setup:

Processor AMD Phenon X6 6300 Black Edition

    Graphic card Radeon RX 580

    8gb ram

    Ssd 240gb

    2 HDs, 480gb and 320gb.

The font is not visually damaged, but when it happened it fired some sparks.

    Thx for the help.

Hello,I am planning on buying this PC and I would like your opinion.

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 05:32 AM PDT

Is everything looking good here and what is up with this warning on pcpartpicker :

Warning! Some AMD B450 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Matisse CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions.

Is this really the case and what should I do about it? https://pcpartpicker.com/list/mBJ9BZ

    USB Stuck

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 12:18 AM PDT

I put the wireless adapter for my Razer Mamba mouse into the usb pass through on my Blackwidow Elite Keyboard, and it absolutely refuses to come out. I will say, this is the best situation in regards to places it could've gotten stuck, but I would still like to have the option to remove it. Any tips are appreciated

144 hz monitor dropping down to ~60 hz when playing games (most noticeably Minecraft)... on a brand new PC.

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 12:38 AM PDT

I just built a new PC, and bought a new monitor for it as well.

    Monitor: Acer xv272u (1440p, 144hz, freesync enabled)

    GPU: 2080 super

    CPU: ryzen 3700x

    RAM: 32gb 3200mhz

Like the title says, I've noticed my refresh rate drop when gaming. It's most noticeable in Minecraft, but happens in several other games I've played as well (RDR2, BF2, etc.)

I currently have Freesync enabled on the monitor. Am using a display port cable to connect the monitor to the gpu.

Here is a list of actions I've taken trying to solve this issue, none of which have worked:

    • Updated to Windows 10 Insider Beta version 2004

    • Power management mode at "prefer maximum performance"

    • Texture filtering quality set to "high performance"

    • Windows "gaming mode" turned off

    • Monitor technology set to G-sync compatible

    • Perform scaling on GPU (instead of display)

When I open any version of Minecraft, the refresh rate drop is instantly noticeable. When I tab out of the game and focus on my desktop, the refresh rate returns to normal (144).

I have exhausted every option I've been able to find.

    Anything else I should try?

Am I an A-hole if I charge someone to give them a pc list and walk them through the process of building even though I’ve only built 3 pcs.

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 06:16 PM PDT

So I'm a 13 year old kid and I've assembled 3 pc's (2 for my friends) I've also helped 5 people chose parts and teach them. Recently I helped my best friend build his pc for free, walked him through the entire process on FaceTime. It took me 6 hours with troubleshooting and getting windows installed. On top of that I couldn't personally help him because of the situation as of late. He was also very clueless about the entire process. That entire process was a headache for me and it was time I could be doing school work in. Well today someone asked me if I could do the same thing. Make the parts list, give them knowledge and then walk through the process through voice chat. I want to help but at the same time I want to get something for being there for hours and making the parts and getting the best deals. To really make sure my friends pc was great it took me about 2 days of researching and watching benchmarks and videos. Would I be an A- hole if I charged him to help him?

Planning to build a PC -- how does this sound?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 10:13 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm planning on building my first gaming PC soon. I have a strict $1000 budget and this is what I've come up with. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/27NhTC

I could purchase these parts with my budget, but I would like to know how well this computer would preform and if there are any recommendations you would have.

If it would help, some games I plan on running are: Overwatch, Apex, Fortnite, and various older singleplayer titles.

Meshify C and No GPU Space

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 01:43 PM PDT

Just putting together a new PC today for the first time in a long while and I have run into what I hope isn't an issue.

I have a Meshify C Case and a XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT THICC III Video Card and it looks like I am at absolutely ZERO space between the card and the front fan.

I'm building a $400 PC build for a friend. This is my first time building a 'budget build.' Can someone tell me how this PC looks and if they know if there is a way to bring down the price.

    Get to building.

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 08:15 PM PDT

Hello fellow redditors, today I upgraded my pc, i was very worried about it since it was my cpu, gpu, and psu. However, after seeing that it cost 150+ to have someone do the job for me I decided I would do it myself, to learn something new and experience what it is like, I have been a lurker in these communities for over a year now. It was very easy, the whole thing took me less than an hour and a half to complete and was pretty straightforward. So this message is to all the newbies, I promise it is as easy as Linus makes it look, it might be very nerve wracking but if you just follow along build guides and have the right mindset you can get it done!

Is it okay to use 3 ram sticks

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 01:11 PM PDT

Would it be okay to use 3 out of the ram slots on my motherboard. They're all the same sticks. Or would it be better off to just run dual channel. They are all 8gb 2400mhz.
