    Simple Questions - April 17, 2020

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 05:12 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

    UserBenchmark should be banned

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 12:17 AM PDT

UserBenchmark just got banned on r/hardware and should also be banned here. Not everyone is aware of how biased their "benchmarks" are and how misleading their scoring is. This can influence the decisions of novice pc builders negatively and should be mentioned here.

Among the shady shit they're pulling: something along the lines of the i3 being superior to the 3900x because multithreaded performance is irrelevant. Another new comparison where an i5-10600 gets a higher overall score than a 3600 despite being worse on every single test: https://mobile.twitter.com/VideoCardz/status/1250718257931333632

Oh and their response to criticism of their methods was nothing more than insults to the reddit community and playing this off as a smear campaign: https://www.userbenchmark.com/page/about

Even if this post doesn't get traction or if the mods disagree and it doesn't get banned, please just refrain from using that website and never consider it a reliable source.

Edit: First, a response to some criticism in the comments: You are right, even if their methodology is dishonest, userbenchmark is still very useful when comparing your PC's performance with the same components to check for problems. Nevertheless, they are tailoring the scoring methods to reduce multi-thread weights while giving an advantage to single-core performance. Multi-thread computing will be the standard in the near future and software and game developers are already starting to adapt to that. Game developers are still trailing behind but they will have to do it if they intend to use the full potential of next-gen consoles, and they will. userbenchmark should emphasize more on Multi-thread performance and not do the opposite. As u/FrostByte62 put it: "Userbenchmark is a fantic tool to quickly identify your hardware and quickly test if it's performing as expected based on other users findings. It should not be used for determining which hardware is better to buy, though. Tl;Dr: know when to use Userbenchmark. Only for apples to apples comparisons. Not apples to oranges. Or maybe a better metaphor is only fuji apples to fuji apples. Not fuji apples to granny smith apples."

As shitty and unprofessional their actions and their response to criticism were, a ban is probably not the right decision and would be too much hassle for the mods. I find the following suggestion by u/TheCrimsonDagger to be a better solution: whenever someone posts a link to userbenchmark (or another similarly biased website), automod would post a comment explaining that userbenchmark is known to have biased testing methodology and shouldn't be used as a reliable source by itself.

here is a list of alternatives that were mentioned in the comments: Hardware Unboxed https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI8iQa1hv7oV_Z8D35vVuSg Anandtech https://www.anandtech.com/bench PC-Kombo https://www.pc-kombo.com/us/benchmark Techspot https://www.techspot.com and my personal favorite pcpartpicker.com - it lets you build your own PC from a catalog of practically every piece of hardware on the market, from CPUs and Fans to Monitors and keyboards. The prices are updated regulary from known sellers like amazon and newegg. There are user reviews for common parts. There are comptability checks for CPU sockets, GPU, radiator and case sizes, PSU capacity and system wattage, etc. It is not garanteed that these sources are 100% unbiased, but they do have a good reputation for content quality. So remember to check multiple sources when planning to build a PC

Picking PC Parts for a $1300 Build

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 02:13 PM PDT

So my cousin tasked me to help him decide which parts should go into a $1300 video editing/gaming build. He specified that he cares about aesthetics and he wants a big and fast SSD for the operating system, video editing programs and files. I came up with this - https://pcpartpicker.com/list/KZmjhg

I just need some input to absolutely know he's getting what he needs in this build

    First Build. Want Some Advice

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 11:21 AM PDT

I've had an MSI laptop with a 4th gen i7 and a GTX 970M for 5 years, and I want an upgrade from that. This is my first desktop build, and I want to go with a Mini ITX form factor.

    Intended Use:
    - Gaming on 1440p 144hz monitor (I want max settings with Cyberpunk 2077)
    - Music creation (Ableton Live 10)
    - Potential streaming (music creation, maybe games)

    Budget:
    - $2000 - $2400

    Rationale for each component:

    CPU:
Intel seems overpriced. The extra cores in AMD makes it better for multi-threaded processes like Ableton or streaming.

    CPU Cooler:
I'm not sure if the stock cooler that comes with the 3700x is worth upgrading. I might overclock in the future, but not initially.

    Motherboard:
I want onboard wi-fi and a Mini ITX form factor. This board seems like a good idea with the PCIe 4.0.

    RAM:
32GB of RAM seems like plenty to me. I went with 3200 instead of 3600 because it was cheaper, and the speed increase with 3600 didn't seem justified by the price difference between the two speeds.

    Storage:
I'm planning on storing OS, games, and other programs on the 1TB M.2. The 2TB HDD will be for sound files, projects, etc. for Ableton.

    GPU:
I was debating between the 2070 Super and the 2080 Super. I've heard that the price of the 2080S isn't justified by its performance increase over the 2070S, but it fit into my budget. I haven't looked into Radeon GPUs, but I'd be open to using one if it fit my needs better.

    Case:
A Mini ITX build is what I want, but I don't want a super small case that would make it difficult to manage cables or be a headache with figuring out airflow. This seemed like a good pick because of those factors.

    PSU:
I just went with one that was fully modular, 80+ gold, and had enough output for my system. Didn't put too much thought into this one.

    Case Fans:
My intention is putting these two NF-F12 on the front of the case, and the included 120mm on the back of the case. The case also comes with a 140mm fan, and I'm not sure if there's a place for it, or if I should just not use it in my build.

    Monitor:
It's 1440p and 144hz, which is exactly what I want. I went with a VA panel since it seemed like a happy medium between TN and IPS panels. It has Freesync, but I've seen Nvidia GPUs working with Freesync. I was hoping this monitor would work with the 2080S I picked.

    UPS:
There's lot of lightning in Florida. I don't want my PC to get toasted by an iconic Florida storm.

I'd greatly appreciate any feedback or suggestions with my build. Thanks!

This is what I purchased. This case seems to be very popular.

PCpartpicker made it super easy to understand and find the components needed.

I actually purchased the motherboard and case open box from amazon for $120 and $80 respectively. No issues. I made sure they were coming from a amazon warehouse. And the graphics card from eBay for $120 like new. So that saved me about $100.

Came out about $720 before taxes.

So excited to be building my first new PC!

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 11:54 AM PDT

    Hello mates!

Just wanted to say I'm so excited to be building my first "new" PC. This is not the first PC I've built but it's the first one that I didn't have to buy used parts to sustain my budget.

It's been a really rough past few weeks for me. I lost my job due to the virus severely affecting my industry of work and shortly after my girlfriend broke up with me. I was saving up for all these computer parts and almost didn't go through with the purchase after I had lost my job.

I was debating really hard on this big financial decision, but I was so sad and I figured I needed something to be happy towards. So I bought them.

The rest of the things are new, the only things I'm reusing is my GPU (still too broke to buy a better one), power supply, and my SSD.

Yea just wanted to tell you guys that :)

    Thanks all!

Hi, I am Thomas and I am new to PC building. I'd like to build my own PC, but I don't really know a lot about what is the best part to buy. So I'd like it if some experienced PC builder could review the parts list that i made. And maybe give some tips on what i should improve.

I am trying to build with a 800 euro budget and reach around 60 fps for most games. Games that I'd like to play are: Minecraft, Overwatch, Hearthstone and Subnautica.

RX 5700 XT or RTX 2070 Super?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 10:38 PM PDT

So I'm about to do my first real PC build. I already ordered a lot of parts and had it all planned out. In my original parts list, I had an AMD RX 5700 XT, but now I'm having second thoughts on that. I'm reading about crashes, bad drivers and poor performance.

As the Nvidia equivalent to the 5700 is the RTX 2070 Super, I'm considering getting that one instead of the AMD card even though it's more expensive.

What do you think? Spend that extra money on the RTX or go with the 5700? And if it's gonna be the Nvidia, which brand would you recommend?

    Thanks for your help!

I won't need to OC since I'll have a gaming PC, so I just have questions about each component. Any general input is also appreciated!

1st is will the CPU cooler fit without bumping into 4 sticks of RAM? I had issues with the new NZXT Z73 that I'd rather not repeat, both with the CAM software and with cables getting crimped due to its cable layout. I'm also wondering if getting the Corsair Cooler + 6 additional Corsair LL120s will give adequate cooling since I know this CPU and GPU can run hot.

2nd is do you know the difference between the ROG X570-E and X570-F? Our startup actually had two issues with the Crosshair VIII GPU slots causing an improper fitting or I would upgrade to that. I tried researching the difference between X570-E and X570-F but don't know enough knowledge to know their pros/cons.

Last question is a similar question on the advantages of getting the EVGA RTX 2080ti FTW3 Ultra. I think the main advantage was its ability to OC higher than others, which isn't really needed in my case. Is there any reason I'd want the FTW3 Ultra over another 2080ti?

I got the 1200W PSU in case I wanted to add a 2nd GPU later on, since it's only $25 more than the 850W.

    Thanks for the help!

Have I bought the wrong RAM for my Ryzen PC?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 11:25 AM PDT

Hi all, need some help here

I bought THIS RAM for my 3700x PC. I then noticed today that it isn't the Ryzen optimised version which is £3 more..

I intend on upgrading to 32gb at some point, but am reluctant to if I am using the wrong RAM and would be happier to sell it and buy the right stuff. Could someone advise please?

Did I do it right? $700 budget, new builder mom looking to share with daughter

Hi all! I gave r/buildmeapc a try since I'm a complete novice when it comes to building from nothing. BUT it seems like everyone else had that same idea so there's an awful lot of posts looking for help and not a whole lot of help to be had. Quick summary of my goals: within a roughly $700 budget - build a PC that can be shared between me (graphics work with Adobe CS software) and my daughter (Minecraft with mods and playing on hypixel, with plans to work on some animation with Blender). I'd prefer to err on the side of future-proofing as much as possible - maximizing the parts that are foundational with the option to upgrade other parts in time as needed.

The graphics card in my build is one I currently own - a mostly failed attempt at making our current beast more usable. If there's a case for skimping elsewhere to squeeze a better one in the budget, I'm open to suggestions (that's why I'm here, after all).

I'm looking to buy in the next day or so - some of the items are on sale and I'm antsy to get going on this project with my daughter!!

Thanks in advance for your help - I'm seeing there's a lot to know about building PCs and I'm thankful for folks who share their knowledge to help others find the joy of building for themselves!

New PC build won't power up after initial mis-assembly

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 11:56 AM PDT

    Hello all,

I bought the components down below. The following happened:

I put the CPU in the socket, and screwed the cooler on top of it. Then when I tried to put the RAM in the slots I realised the cooler is in the way. So I unscrewed it. As I took it of the motherboard, the cpu stuck to the cooler. Some pins were bent and I got some of the thermal paste on the pins as well. I used an old toothbrush to brush it away and unbent the pins. I could reinsert the CPU effortlessly and install the CPU cooler. I assembled the mobo further, put it in the case, added the GPU, and connected the front panel pins according to the specification of the mobo. The build won't power up, no reaction of the PSU. I tested the following:

    - I short circuit the PSU, it turns on all fine.

    - I disconnected the power button pins on the mainboard and short circuited them. No reaction.

    I am wondering if either:

    - my CPU is broken

    - my mobo is broken

    - both are burnt

    I've got the following questions:

    1. Assuming my CPU is fried. If I bought a new one and tested it on the mobo which could potentially be broken as well, am I risking to burn my new CPU?
    2. Assuming my mobo is fried. If I got a new one and tested it with a potentially broken CPU, am I risking to burn the new mobo?
    3. Is there any way to test my CPU and/or my mobo separately?

The question for me is not "how?" but "why?"

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 04:28 AM PDT

So I would class myself as a very un-knowledgeable (is that a word?) person when it comes to PC's.

So for example, I know that a 2080ti is a more powerful card than a 1080, and dual channel 16GB 3000mhz DDR4 is better than dual channel 16GB 1600mhz DDR3, but I don't know why.

Are there any decent YouTube channels that people reccomend that explain how and why computer components work the way they do, (for example CPU's, why is a 8-core better than a 4-core? What is a core and what does it do? What is a thread and why is more better?) and can put them in a practical scenario so I can build a knowledge base on PC building and components?

Gonna be running standard genomics tools like bowtie2, GATK, etc.. Most tools' performance plateaus at 8-12 CPU threads but I would be running as many parallel instances of them as possible. These programs have no use for graphics cards, so I only really need one to plug in a monitor for initial setup then it will be run headlessly from my MacBook forever after that.

Planning to add more storage as needed later, just need a SSD for holding the data that is being processed.

Hoping to have enough room for possibly adding a graphics card in the future if I decide to try machine learning as well.

Also probably would be underclocking it a little to reduce heat and power usage, or at least turning off the turbo boost junk and enabling Eco mode, etc..

One thing I am not sure about is the memory. At work I always use enterprise systems that have ECC standard memory, it looks like both the CPU and motherboard here support ECC but I am not sure if I actually need it; I've never not had it so I am not sure what effect the lack of ECC could have.

Also not sure about the memory clock speed needed. Linus seems to think you need at least 3600 speed memory, but he only cares about getting 10 extra FPS on Tomb Raider; its not clear to me what kind of real world performance effect you would get with something like the 2400 speed memory I have listed here. Does anyone know where to find actual benchmarks, especially for the 3950x?

Is there anything I am missing for this? I have not messed with my own hardware in many years so idk if there's other considerations for these parts.

What is the best GPU the ryzen 5 3600 can use without the CPU bottle necking

I currently have 1060 6gb and I see the 2070 on sale. Will my CPU use it to its full ability without cpu bottle neck.

    Don't make my mistake

I know this is common sense in this subreddit already but, update your OS if you aren't already on Windows 10. I've been running windows 7 since I built my PC in 2017 and was too stubborn to switch over. I loved windows 7 and hated the idea of switching to the new windows 10 that I heard so many people griping about. Everything was great... until it wasn't.

One day about two years ago the latest games that I wanted to play with my friends (pubg, overwatch, more currently warzone and valorant) were basically unplayable. I thought it was my crappy internet or maybe my 1050ti wasn't good enough. Nope, I just recently updated to windows 10 and all those titles I had issues with play flawlessly now (well, as good as they can with my current set-up). Don't be a bonehead like me.

660 GTX not displaying anything on the monitor

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 02:39 PM PDT

Going back to my family for the quarantine means going back to my previous old computer! The issue is that when I try to install the graphic card (NVidia 660 GTX), the fans run but I can't see anything on the monitor.

    The specs:

    • MOBO: Intel® Desktop Board DB85FL
    • CPU: Intel i5 4440
    • PSU: Acbel ce2 550W

Without the graphic card installed and using the motherboard HDMI input, the computer works. But with the graphic card, the monitor doesn't display anything.

I tried disabling the Intel Graphics from the Device Manager (following a forum suggestion), but still nothing is displayed on the monitor :(

    Any idea why?

What part of my tower do I upgrade?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 08:27 PM PDT

I use Microstation a CAD software. When I have projects loaded onto it, and lets say I rotate it, it lags badly. Also, the main thing, when I convert a project into a PDF, or into another CAD model, any sort of conversion, it can take a really long time. I was just wondering what part of my Tower I need to upgrade so that processing these models and converting will take way less time and everything faster and smoother. Thank you, specs below:

    MODEL: ASPIRE TC-115

    CPU: AMD A6 6310 / 1.8 GHz Quad Core

    OS: Windows 8.1 64 Bit

    RAM: 4GB DDR3 SDRAM

    Memory Speed: 1600 MHz

    Graphics: AMD Radeon R5 235 2GB

    HD: 1TB
