This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

I've been obsessed with r/buildapc and commenting for months and learned so much from you. Finally able to pull the trigger on my own.

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 09:57 AM PDT

I've been studying parts and your advice for a long time on here, I've considered many aspects of this build and I'm closing a sale within 2 weeks that will let me pull the trigger. I want to thank you all for the advice you've given me so far, I've really missed being knowledgeable about PC components. You guys are great at this and you are fueling my obsession with this. I want to get your opinions one more time. Sorry about the book.

    • I'm in the USA, there is a Microcenter about an hour away.
    • My budget is around $1500 before the monitors, give or take $100ish+/-. This is very flexible, not rigid, so don't worry about numbers that much. Feel free to add/remove, your advice is welcomed.
    • My build will be for gaming mainly, but I also work from home. I plan on having 2x 27" 1440p 144Hz+ IPS monitors. I capture and process photos and light video for work. I do some light coding, but more as a hobby, nothing specific just scripting mostly. I'm trying to get into streaming once I can get build up the courage and the space for it. I may do VR someday, but I don't really plan on 4K gaming.
    • Take a look at my notes on the GPU below. I could use some advice.
    • This is my first build since 2004, but I feel mostly confident in my knowledge of the current market and next gen specs. Since I'm one to keep my machines for as long as possible, I'm trying to future proof as much as possible, even though I understand future proofing isn't a real thing.
    • I've got notes on my selections below the build list.

CPU I went with the 3800X due to the 8 cores, mainly for next gen games but also the workhorse aspect with processing video. I don't plan on overclocking, so the stock cooler is fine for now.
MOBO I like ASUS's VRMs, it seems they have decent MOSFETs and this board has just appealed to me for the price. It has a USB-C connection which I'll use, but also I really like the idea of having one PCIe 4.0 lane. I know that many of you don't agree and will say that PCIe 4.0 isn't worth it, but I may upgrade my GPU next year and I know it won't matter, but I like the feeling of having it if I need it down the road.
RAM I just wanted 3600MHz, 16CL, and RGB. Cheapest I could find with all 3, am I missing anything here?
SSD Thanks to u/NewMaxx for talking me off the PCIe 4.0 SSD ledge. His guides helped me a ton. I could be talked into the WD SN750 pretty easily though.
GPU This is where I need your opinions the most. I have been going back and forth between the 2070 super and RX 5700xt. I understand the differences between them and their performance and the mostly fixed driver issues, etc. Ultimately I went with the 2070 super for a few features. Where my head is at now is that I might want to upgrade to Big Navi when I can get my hands on one. So, should I just get a decent last gen GTX card now to save the money and wait, or buy this gen and try to sell it when I get my Big Navi card? My current monitors are 1080p 60Hz, but I will be upgrading those next. Upgrading the card and monitors at the same time sounds appealing. If I do this, which card would you choose from last gen that saves some money, but gives me decent performance for today's titles? If I go with 2070 super, which one would you recommend?
CASE My space is perfect for a white case with my white dual monitors. It's between this and the Lian Li PC O11dw.
PSU I really like Corsair for this and the RMx line seems perfect for my build. I used Linus's tier list to help.
RGB I don't have any clue when it comes to RGB lighting. I don't plan on having a ton of it. It appears the case I have allows for some fans, but doesn't have an RGB controller. I plan on just putting in 3 RGB fans on the front panel for now, but no idea what to pick. What works well? Your advice here is helpful.

Is there anything you might recommend? Any thoughts on the GPU sitch?

Edit: Wow. So... this blew up. I really, really appreciate all your help!
I am going to go with a 3700x or splurge and go with the 3900x for $399 at Microcenter. I'm now reconsidering the PSU for a few reasons in the comments, any recommendations?

    Budget PC Build (Repost)

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 09:32 AM PDT

My dad's birthday is coming up and I wanted to build him a pc. As I'm only 13 years old I don't have any money of my own so my mum is willing to give me £350 to build a computer. I've never built a pc so I wanted to ask if this was a decent parts list for the price or if I can get something better within my budget.

    CPU: Ryzen 3 3200G £78

    Mobo: Gigabyte B450M DS3H £71

    RAM: Patriot Viper 2×4gb 3000Mhz £38

    SSD: Western Digital 500gb m.2 £59

PSU: Cooler Master MWE 400W £33

    Case: Cooler Master Q300L £42

I've reposted this because I got 0 replies on my old post :(.

Any improvements/tips/suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I'm very new to PC's.

GeForce RTX 2070 Super or Radeon RX 5700 XL - £200 difference

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 06:27 AM PDT

Been some time since looked at graphics cards. These two seem to top some lists. GeForce RTX 2070 Super being around £520 area and Radeon RX 5700 XL around £320.

Is the RTX 2070 worth the £200 difference?

One comment that stood out so far mentions drivers being a pain with AMDs, which maybe with my older motherboard might be a concern.

Been nvidia graphics for most builds. Current is a 960, 4 years old, hence looking for some replacement.

Also realize that the rest of the machine might need a replace at some point.

Gaming, well been on this 960 playing newish games on ok settings, but got that card likely 2 years after it came out, so im not needy for the 2 second joy of the latest.

    MB: Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0

    CPU: FX8320

Graphics: Gigabyte Nvidia GTX 960 OC

Case: Fractal Design Define R4 (i don't need lights on any of my components)

Soo for £200 difference, is it worth it for the graphics, or spend toward other parts?

Newbie trying to build a $700 to $800 Budget PC Build

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 02:45 AM PDT

Brief background: I have gamed on console during my entire lifetime, but always wanted to have my own gaming PC instead. During all of those years it seemed like building my own PC was way too complicated, so for the past 4-5 days I've been researching about PCs, the components that it requires, and how to build one in general. I managed to put one together for $750 and I need some feedback!

I'm aware that I still need these parts:

    ~Case Fans

~Monitor (Hopefully a 144hz if this build is capable of pulling it off)

    ~Mouse

    ~Keyboard

If you could recommend me any of these at really good prices, please let me know! I can surely save some money for some premium peripherals but I would like any budget but good ones.

Will DDR-3 RAM even work with my build?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 05:18 AM PDT

I have an MSI X470 Gaming Plus Max motherboard, an AMD Ryzen 7 2700X CPU and I'm also planning on getting the RTX 2080 for my build.

Thought I might as well start looking for RAM, when my dad tells me to get DDR3 RAM, which should be, according to him, way cheaper and quicker.

I told him it wouldn't be compatible.

He told me, if the mobo supports DDR4, it'll support DDR3.

So, since I'm no expert in this field, I'm asking you, if a this motherboard actually does have some kind if backwards compatibility, or if the other parts also play a role.

Thanks for any help in advance!

Is my machine too old to save?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 04:11 AM PDT

I've been out of the PC building game for a long time and the old boi I'm rocking is about 7 years old with zero upgrades. Gaming is one of the ways I connect with old friends from around the world and at the moment I have to sit and watch them because my PC is just too old and has no driver support for new releases.

My question is, can i simply upgrade the graphics card or is this so out of date it needs an entire rebuild. Please see the current specs below:

    • Graphics card: NVidia Geforce 560 ti
    • CPU: amd fx(tm)-6100 six-core processor
    • Motherboard: sabertooth 990fx
    • RAM: 16GB DDR3 667MHz
    • Disk 1 (OS): Samsung SSD 840 EVO 120GB
    • Disk 2 (Apps): Seagate 500GB 3.5" Barracuda
    • PSU: 650W
    • Case: NZXT Phantom

If there's any information i've left out please let me know. It's likely the old boi needs putting out of his misery and shooting but if he can be saved I will. Thank you all for your help :)

Unusual request: A PC case with good airflow that's easy to clean, any recommendations?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 12:22 PM PDT

I see a lot of well-reviewed cases that either have weird designs or architecture that looks like perfect dust traps that would be near impossible to completely clean the dust out of, or with solid panels that might reduce airflow.

From your personal experience, does anyone know a nice mid-tower that should be easy to clean and provides great airflow?

As an aside, i'm building a new rig and threw this together as a baseline, but I'll still be fine tuning and researching for at least another week, but feel free to provide any feedback. Thanks!

    Smaller PC Build Recommendations

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 02:07 PM PDT

Hey guys, After spending a semester and a half without my PC due to the size of my room, I have decided to finally pull the trigger and build a new one to use for the remainder of COVID-19 and the years to come at school.

    First, some details:

    • I am in the US

    • Budget is right around $1500

    • Looking at getting a 1440p 144hz monitor at some point in the future

    • Purely for gaming, mainly games like EFT, COD: War Zone, and Valorant upon release

This is the build I've come up with but I would like any advice on where it can be improved. The main advice I am looking for is the GPU and if possible getting a cheaper one without decreasing the quality of game play all too much.

Help with my First PC Build

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 07:50 AM PDT

Hello. I have spent most of my life gaming on a ps4 and recently decided that I want to build a PC. I have a budget of around 600 US dollars and I have already made a build. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/xvRrPn. I already have an ssd and just trying to play games such as Rainbow 6, Gta 5, Warzone, and Fortnite. I would prefer to run the game at 144fps since I've got a 144hz monitor and will this be possible with these specs at 1080p. Any help is appreciated :)

RAM with lighting that remains on & with configured colors when pc is turned off?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 10:08 AM PDT

Oook so this might be a weird one, but I have a couple spare cases, fans and AiOs and thought of just having some PCs in my room, for example as a background for streaming. I will either have them turned on with Athlon CPUs or (preferred) off with just all lighting on.

On my main pc I can set it to have MB lights on, GPU still turns off for some reason, Res does stay on (whatever, its my own pc so i dont bother to fix it xD), but ram just goes full rainbow, it's usually controlled by the gskill software. Is there a brand combination of mobo + ram where I can keep the set lighting (not all the same color) when the system is turned off?

    RAM Upgrade Please Help

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 12:46 PM PDT

    I am currently looking to upgrade the RAM in my computer at the moment I am currently running 3x2GB of DDr3 RAM, however, I cannot find the make as it is cheap RAM and unbranded. I am looking to upgrade to anything above 12GB of RAM my specs are below;

    Intel Core i7-950

    Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R ATX LGA1366 Motherboard

    GTX 1060 3GB

I am looking to spend £70 and i have found some cheap RAM on Ebay but the RAM isn't listed on Gigabytes compatibility manual perhaps the manual is too old, my question is will any DDR3 RAM work in the motherboard?

    Kingston HyperX 12GB (6x2GB) 1600 MHz DDR3-1600 RAM KHX1600C9D3B1K2/2GX

this is the ram on eBay I was looking at

Thank you I appreciate any help.

    Is my Partpicker List good?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 12:32 PM PDT

Hey, so i am planning to build my first pc and wanted to ask if this build is good. (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Fy2Xdm) I really want to use the corsair case as i only heard good things about it and it looks really good. Also i have a question about airflow as its confusing me a bit. Are the front fans on the case intake, if so how do i recognize this and would the radiator on the top with exhaust fans be good or what would be optimal for the airflow?

About to give up been diagnosing for 2 weeks now, 50$ to whoever can solve it for me

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 06:26 AM PDT

So I've been getting lag / stutter spikes that last about 1-2 seconds periodically within games such as Robo Recall. I checked the debug visible HUD and my refresh drops to 24 from 80 during these peaks, and my GPU headroom goes from 30% - 5%. Super sampling to 1.4. When I'm not super sampling, the game runs a bit smoother, but still the same problems just not as bad, but still shouldn't be there. Interestingly, when I restart the level after the first load, the lag stutters don't appear, and the game runs constant 80 hertz for the most part?

    System Specs:

    RTX 2080 Super

    i7-9700k

32 GB 3200 MHZ Corsair Vengeance RGB

500 GB SSD Samsung 850 EVO

    H100i Closed Loop Cooler

MSI Gaming Edge MPG Z390M Micro ATX Motherboard.

Here is what I've done so far:

-Mem test 64 on all 4 modules for 6 hours passed.

-CPU ran stress tests prime 95 etc, passed no OC

-Replaced the PSU because I thought it might be the issue my parts with OC should be taking 500Watts, my PSU is a 850 W Corsair RMX Gold rated PSU.

-Tried 5 different GPU's ranging from 2070S - 2080 S and GTX 1080 all do the same thing

-Reformatted, reinstalled all drivers up to date and software bios for mobo etc

-Made sure all cables are plugged in, OC vs not OC same lag stutters

-Monitored temps and etc all doing fine

-Monitored voltage rails only about 1% droop doing perfectly fine

-Don't have Corsair ICUE running or even installed

-Tried running on multiple hard drives, moving the games around reinstalling, no luck.

-Checking CPU performance on task manager prior to starting VR at 3%

-Motherboard has endured all the stress tests, benchmarks, and all ports functioning fine, and speeds temps etc so I don't think it's the problem.

    Running Two Different GPUs

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 02:03 PM PDT

    Hi,

Is it possible to run two different GPUs at the same time? I currently have the EVGA Geforce 560 TI (i know, an old model looking to replace) and will be adding a AMD Firepro W4100 (courtesy of my work) in order to have multiple monitors as it greatly benefits my job and since I am currently wfh as most of us are. Will having both of these GPUs affect my computer immensely or can I program my computer so that certains (primarily games) runs on a different graphics card and what not?

    Thank you for the feedback!!!

My budget is 100 euro + selling the parts I will replace, So I would be getting extra 150€ for selling the CPU & MB and/or 100€ extra for selling the GPU.

    Im on Spain.

My goal is mainly gaming but I also do a bit of video and photo editing, nothing too heavy.

So what should I do? Can I see a real upgrade with that budget?

    Thank you so much guys.

Advice/Opinion desperately needed before I buy a second hand pc

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 01:49 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,
After abandoning my gaming pc for a few years since life simply got in the way, I'm planning on joining again! I saw this pc being sold with following parts and would like your intake on whether or not I should buy it. The components are as followed:
    -Ryzen 5 2600 3.9Ghz
-Asus ROG STRIX Radeon rxVega 56
    -B450 MSI Tomahawk
    -16 gb Ran DDR4 Corsair ipx cl15 3000mhz
    -Case Kolink Stronghold
    -SSd 120gb kingston
    -HDD 1tb seagate barracuda
    -650W corsair
    ---> Price 750eu after negotiation

Now my first question is, will this pc run most if not all modern games(Mainly 3rd person action games or first person shooter games) effortlessly and even more importantly, will it support VR gaming? Not just in general, but also for the forseable future. Can I relax after buying this pc and not worry about having to replace any parts any time soon?

Another option would be to build a new pc with following components:
    -Ryzen 5 2600 3.4Ghz 6-core processor
-Msi Geforce RTX 2060 6GB VENTUS XS OC
-B450 Tomahawk MAX ATX am4 motherboard
    -Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory
-MSI Gungnir 100 ATX Mid Tower Case
    --->900eu
And I'd re-use my 120gb SSD and TB western union green HDD from my 'old' gaming pc

I think there is quite a price difference and since I still want to buy a VR and monitor that will support UltraHd or 4k gaming, I'm leaning more towards the second hand build, but I don't know if this build is atleast a year or 2 futureproof, especially for VR gaming. Since my knowledge around Pc's is pretty outdated I'm also scared of the issues that a second hand pc might bring with it that I will not know how to solve :(

I'd love to hear about is ASAP since I'm meeting the guy tomorrow. I asked him to download HWMonitor, Speccy and Valley benchmark for me to check tomorrow.

    Thank in advance everyone!

    Case recommendation for mATX build

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 01:41 PM PDT

    US Based.

Already have a machine I built a while back, but some recent upgrades and tweaks have finally made me have to consider the airflow issues that previous choices have brought on.

Currently built into an InWin 301. It was fine when I had no overclocks and a lightweight GPU, but now that I'm running an overclocked Vega 56 and I've pushed the R5 1600 to its limits, I'm seeing temps that are...not bad, per se, but higher than I'd like. CPU is ~40C idle, pushing 80C under all core stress test. I'd like to drop that 5 or 10 degrees if possible, and I think decent airflow (along with maybe a beefier cooler) will help a lot.

I'm looking for a case that:

    • Has good, or at least decent airflow potential. I imagine a lot of things are better than my current case.

    • Isn't too terribly big. The InWin 301 is damn near the perfect size, so as close to that as possible is ideal, but a little bigger can be arranged

    • Has a tempered glass side panel. Not interested in solid or acrylic.

    • Has a clean look that isn't too "gamer fuel." I like glass and lights, but none of the weird angles or cyborg looking fixtures.

    Bonuses would be:

    • Mesh or glass front panel for RGB fans (I know, make fun of me all you want, I like my unicorn vomit).

    • Enough room to fit a decent tower cooler. The stock AMD cooler is surprisingly good, and I may end up not even upgrading that part, but I'd like the option to.

Cases I've already looked at include:

    • Corsair Crystal 280x - Sounds like it has some airflow issues itself, though, which kind of defeats the purpose of the change. Also seems to be primarily designed for use with an AIO, which I'm not particularly interested in.

    • NZXT H400i - Looks really nice, but doesn't have a front panel that lets me see any rainbow fans.

    • Fractal Design Meshify C Mini - Almost exactly what I want, except I'm not a huge fan of the low poly front panel. I could live with it, though, if it's the best thing in the category.

    • Phantex Evolv mATX variant - Pushing it on the non-cyborg criteria, and no visibility for front RGB fans, but otherwise looks really nice and apparently has pretty good airflow despite the solid front panel?

I haven't looked at any full size ATX mid-towers, but if you're aware of any that are compact and otherwise meet my goals, I'll happily take a look at them. Also, I'm not gonna say that price is no object, but a few days ago I was willing to drop $160 on the Crystal 280x, so...you know, I'll pay for a good case if I have to.

Thanks everyone. Let me know if I left anything out.
