This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Well I fucked up my pc today

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 10:47 PM PST

So today I accidentally spilled a little bit of water and of course it lands perfectly in the top holes on my case and of course my pc turns off. The power button on my computer stopped working so I decided to use the ole screw driver trick to jump start the motherboard hoping it would post so I could see the damage(bad idea, really bad idea) it ended up sparking and I fried the entire motherboard :/ So now I have no idea what components I fried along with my motherboard and I'm basically fucked. Moral of the story do not do any of the things my dumbass did.

Don't suffer through crappy enterprise laptops at work!

    Posted: 03 Feb 2021 06:53 PM PST

I've been so frustrated at work trying to work with an old Dell enterprise laptop. I finally put together an analysis of how much money I was wasting in slow processing, excel crashes, hard crashes, and inability to multi-task. I got the OK to spec out a desktop to handle my big excel files (300k-500k lines. Before anyone comments, I use SQL most of the time, but the nature of the data requires me to work with these large excel files.)

I am going from Intel i5-6200u 2.3ghz 2core with 4gb ram hdd laptop with 32bit apps to a desktop Intel i9-10900k with 32gb ram and nvme storage and 64bit apps. I showed it will vastly improve my ability to work with my data, while also not costing that much more than a high end laptop since I don't need a dGPU.

Moral of the story is I gained my PC knowledge in big part from this sub. I priced out a machine and showed that it was cheaper to upgrade me than have me waste a ton of time. Do your analysis and present to your bosses on the value and you can bring your hobby into work a little bit.

How can I earn money with my PC?

Does my choice of parts make sense?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 01:12 PM PST

    Hi all,

First time posting, and new to /r/buildapc

It's been more than 10 years since I last built a PC, I feel a bit out of touch with the latest advancements and standards.

At my local PC shop website, I managed to conjure the following list of components, and I need to understand whether this makes sense, considering my use case.

Is one of my choices under- or over- the right grade of component?

Is anything not compatible? Too old? Is known to be a bad combination?

I'm probably missing something obvious. So please help me pinpoint what it is.

This new machine is going to be my main workstation, and act as a base for gaming station (with a definite future GPU upgrade).

The new machine will inherit my existing USB-C+DP monitor (very new), mouse, keyboard and such from my old machine.

I'll probably pass on my old machine (ASRock Z68 Extreme4, Core i5 2500, GTX 980, 8GB DDR3, 1TB SSD) to my older 10 y/o son as his starter game rig... It should handle Minecraft just fine :)

I mention this, because this opens up possibility to mix and match components - e.g. buy some new part which I intend to pass on to my son, and inherit the respective part from my old rig.

For example, the monitor in the list is meant for him, not for me.

I've nobody to showoff to, so I can do away with all the LEDs and fancy shmancy stuff, if it saves some bucks.

Lastly, I am fond of quiet. I know quiet and beefy don't mix well, but I'd rather go for one or two notches less than "impressive", if it gets me those extra Db of quietness. (maybe especially I'd like a recommendation for a good quiet case, in this regard)

Anyway, the list is: (prices stripped because I'm not in the US anyway, and I'm looking to have the parts in sync with one another more than just consider price)

My first ever High-End machine (sponsored partially by WSB)

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 04:22 AM PST

Ever since I was a kid I was a PC gamer, especially so since I am from Poland where PC gaming was always the king in terms of popularity. I built several PC's over the years and also maintained my parents PC and laptops, this hobby also drove me to pursue a career in IT. Unfortunately, since the money was tight I always had to cut corners to get the best bang for the buck.

Last year (2020) since I finally had some extra money to blow I decided to build a new PC with the upcomming Zen 3 CPU and new RTX 30X0 card. Due to the covid and all that crypto mess the prices and availability were not in my favor so I postponed the whole thing to a later date when things settle.

In recent weeks due to the lockdown, I was so bored that I decided to try my luck with the stock market, I signed with an online broker and joined several subreddits about stocks (wsb, investing etc.). I played it safe with a diversified portfolio (no GME gains for me) but still made 600 hundred euros in a span of 2 weeks. It was so stressful and was dragging so much of my attention that I decided to close my positions and buy a gaming PC.

    Specs

    • PSU: Corsair RM 750i 750W
    • CPU: Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock 4
    • SSD: Samsung 970 Evo 500 GB M.2 2280 PCI-E x4 Gen3 NVMe
    • Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V, DDR4, 16 GB, 3200MHz, CL16
    • MOBO: Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS
    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, 3.7GHz, 32 MB
    • GPU: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming OC 8GB GDDR6
    • CASE: be quiet! Pure Base 500DX (white)
    • Extras: 2 SSD's from my old PC and ASUS wi-fi PCI card

    Several tips from my experiences:

Dark Rock 4 has really tight fan clamps and it's easy to scratch the fins with them.

If you want to control the LEDs on all of your stuff from a single piece of software, get it from the same AIB.

Make sure your mobo has the latest bios to support ZEN 3 (ask the shop or purchase the BIOS update)

Ever since I built it, I've been having a constant issue with the GPU. Whenever I play a game, literally any game although the game I play the most is Second Life, it will crash the game and my GPU will reboot. I'll get an error message from AMD saying a driver timeout has been detected in my system Here's a pic.. In event viewer, it says that GPU driver x has stopped responding and successfully recovered. Here's a pic.

Things I've tried to fix this:

AMD cleanup utility + clean install drivers

    DDU + clean install drivers

    Auto undervolt with Radeon Wattman

    Auto overclock with Radeon Wattman

Manual undervolt to several values with Radeon Wattman

Manual underclock to several frequencies with Radeon Wattman

    Clean installed Windows

Rolled back GPU drivers to several different versions

    Updated bios

    Changed ram

Removed side panel to see if overheating is the issue (didn't help, it's all liquid cooled anyway)

Switched GPU from Unleash mode to more stable OC mode

    Updated GPU drivers

I'm hoping someone here can help me, I can't even have a game open for 5 minutes without that error popping up. I'm so frustrated that I spent all this money on a pc for it to not even let me play. If you need anymore info or anything, don't hesitate to ask. Thank you very much for reading all this.

    How I built a 9900K build minus a GPU for $1000.

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 09:03 AM PST

So I'm a minor, and my parents let me spend $1000 on a PC build. Being the computer nerd I was, I researched the *heck* out of all the PC parts I could find. Initially, I wanted to buy a CPU, GPU and monitor with the $1000 and make more money later to save up for the rest of the system. However, my parents said they wanted the PC to work when I assembled the parts after spending $1000. So let me take you guys on an adventure!

I was looking into the RTX 3070 in around September of last year, not aware of the ridiculous stock problem. But, with that, I couldn't get new hardware for the video editing I wanted to do to make money with the rest of my budget.

I ended up using the GT 1030 I had from my previous HP 8300 Pre-built rocking the 3570 an 8 GBs of DDR3 at 1333 MHz. Can't play anything aside from Roblox and Valorant at 1080p, so that's what I'm stuck with. Whatever.

For my CPU, I was looking into the 3900X, but it was $400, which seemed too close to half of my budget. I needed something for around $300, which led me to the 3700X. I also researched the direct competitor of that chip, the 9700K, which was inferior in the workload I wanted to use it for. I then found the 9900K, sitting there on Newegg new for $319. Sold. That processor launched at $500.

Now I wanted to build in the O11, like any other teenager, but the new Mini had just launched at that point so I thought I'd be different (and maybe because it costed half as much as the regular O11). I watched Der8auer's video on the case, and he used an ITX motherboard. Guess that means I needed an ITX board! Wrong, should've went mATX or something but all the Z390 mATX boards are pretty lacking, would've went ROG Strix Z490-G if I was on a 10700K.

So I went Aorus Z390-I for my motherboard, the only Z390 ITX board for less than $200, I paid $170. I wanted the Z390 Strix board, but after second guessing that, it went out of stock the next day, never coming back to the $220 list price on Newegg.

Now for the RAM! You might call me crazy, but I bought a 2x32GB kit of DDR4. But, the reason I did it was because it costed $220! I couldn't pass on that! Plus, it was white and RGB, so I needed that. It was TeamGroup T-force Delta R 2x32 3000Mhz, thank goodness I didn't go Ryzen. I have had a crap ton of Chrome tabs open with Premiere Pro running and I've seen up to 48GB in use, don't tell me that 64 is crazy. I had the use case.

There's this Chinese PC fan/cooler company called ID-Cooling, which I had never heard of. So why not give it a go? Yeah, I don't know about this one. I found their 360mm AIO for $85, so why not? I also needed some fans to fill up the O11, so I spent $100 on 6 of their white RGB fans. I can't say it was a bad purchase, I idle at 35C, a little warm in my opinion, but it is on a 9900K, which isn't the most efficient chip.

Power supply, SFX 650W Cooler Master unit, maybe a little low, but I can upgrade it later. Storage, I already had a 2TB Hard Drive, so I bought a 500GB NVMe drive for $60, nice, considering it was the Samsung 970 EVO.

I spent $20 on white cable extensions, $20 on a fan hub, and $8 on thermal paste. I've gotta say, I've really stretched my budget to the absolute limit, spending $1050, with the AIO and extra fans gifted to me for my birthday (great timing).

I think it looks good, a little empty without a real GPU, but it's coming soon.

OneDrive link to a picture of the build (Don't roast me on that SATA cable, it'll get fixed soon).

[QUESTION] Where to find in-stock GPU for an academic research lab

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 01:47 PM PST

    Hi all,

This is probably a very stupid question. My research lab got some grant money for equipment and we want to build a workstation for doing simulation and machine learning. Due to the bureaucracy of the university, we cannot just scout for a single GPU in stock then rapidly swipe our credit card to get one.

I wonder if anybody knows a safe place to find NVidia GPU without for education/academic research purposes? Or if NVidia or any computer part company has a special program for EDU?

Thanks so much in advance. Any info would help.

Replacing my 10 year old BenQ screen

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 12:41 PM PST

    Hi guys

I've wanted for change out my old 1080p scren for a while now. I'm looking for something with:

    • 1440p
    • 144+hz
    • IPS
    • G-sync (as I have a geforce card)

I've been looking into theese two:

    A) https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dell-S2721DGFA-Compatible-DisplayPort-Adjustable/dp/B08NFBKNMY

    B) https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VG27AQL1A-Supports-Compatible-DisplayPort/dp/B088MLC8PH

Have any of you guys experiences with either or preferably both of theese screens? The Asus screen should have a build-in chip for G-sync which should be far superior to the software version in the Dell screen.

On the other had does the Dell screen match my 2nd 24" dell monitor and it has a buildin power supply instead of that chunky block that comes with the Asus screen.

The monitor will be used 95% for gaming but I'm not doing ANY sort of competitive gaming. Currently I'm all up into games like Rimworld, Factorio, Space Engineers, Minecraft, WoW and Assassins Creed.

I always use my computer in a decently lit room (except for twice a year).

The dell screen is currently 160$ more expensive that the Asus screen, but I'm waiting for a sale before I buying anyway. Both screens have had the exact price previously on sale.

    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

    Low-cost replacement for current motherboard/CPU

    • Mobo: X79 Extreme4
    • RAM: 16 GB DDR3
    • CPU: I7-3820

I really need whatever hardware replaces the above to:

    • fit in my current case
    • be inexpensive
    • support Windows 7

My only baseline for performance is "as good as what I have now". Anything above that is gravy.
