I built a solid gaming PC for just under $200 (with some help!

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 09:42 PM PDT

I've always wanted to get into PC gaming, but I never thought I had the budget to do so...until today.

    Presenting...

The Dell Optiplex 3010: Gaming Edition

    Pictures

    Specs:

    • i5-3470

    • OEM LGA1155 motherboard

    • 8gb DDR3 RAM

    • EVGA GTX 1660

    • SanDisk 240GB SSD

    • 500 GB HDD

    • 500w EVGA PSU

This thing sort of came together over the past week on a whim. My birthday is Friday, so I figured I'd be able to recoup the cost of a PC a little bit, so I pulled the trigger on the 3010 from eBay last Friday for $86 shipped.

After that, the hunt for a GPU was on. I scoured local sellers on Craigslist and Facebook for a few days until I found it: a GTX 1660 for $110. Not the most mind-blowing card in the world, but all I really want out of this project is smooth 1080p gaming and VR readiness. Copped. (Side note, the seller said he was getting rid of it because his friend gave him a deal on his "old" 2060- his friend got a free 2080 from his job!)

Today was build day, and everything came together nicely. My friend, who has always been more knowledgeable about these types of things, helped me put everything together and supplied an extra fan and controller, the PSU and SSD (which had Windows installed from a previous build of his).

It's about as VR ready as can be on Steam VR's performance test, and playing a little CS:GO on the highest settings, this beast averaged over 160 fps!

Now, sitting on an old plastic patio table, hooked up to a $30 1050p monitor, and a keyboard and mouse from Goodwill, I'm so happy with what I've got here. Don't know how long it'll be before I can afford some actual games or VR hardware, but I'm thrilled with the performance so far and ready for what's to come!

Edit: Thank you everyone for the kind words! The response to this little project has been crazy. Huge shout out to everyone sending Steam Keys, that's incredibly generous. I love this community. Birthday is off to a great start!

Just finished my first build in a Lian Li PC-011 and I'm still stunned at how awesome that case is to build in

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 11:22 AM PDT

    Picture of completed build: https://imgur.com/gallery/MjnyV8U

    Mini review:

I've been kicking around the idea of upgrading some components over the next couple of years. Probably GPU first depending on how the 3080ti reviews but after that I'd be waiting until the DDR5 generation processors hit the market in late 2021-2022 (if you believe the reports). I had also been wanting to try my hand at a full custom loop when I do the big processor upgrade.

So my Meshify wasn't going to cut it, not that you can't water cool in a Meshify but that it's pretty difficult to find parts to do it. You need slim radiators, a short GPU, figure out how to mount the pump somewhere creative etc. So I decided to pull the trigger and transplant into a Lian Li PC-011 now.

What a freaking great case to build in this is. It seems Lian Li really thought of everything when it comes to what you would need or want while building a PC in this case. You can install the PSU last if you want, there are grommets and cable running holes in every single part that you need them. Everything is modular and you have tons of room to run cables and then hide them all behind the SSD tray mount when you're done.

I never felt cramped or like I needed to mcguiver a way to run a cable in this case. Compared to the Meshify which felt like going to war with my own sanity to build in.

Sorry I felt like I just needed to rave about this case. 10/10 super recommend.

    Brooklyn Battlestation Build

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 07:26 AM PDT

    Hey Everyone!

    https://imgur.com/a/9JBmGGH

I realized recently I never posted photos from my late-2018 build. I guess Brooklyn Covid quarantine gave me some free time to dig up old projects!

It was a really rewarding process. Had always been a diehard PC gamer, but didn't have the rig to match the passion. It was an absolute blast collecting parts, assembling the machine, and then just transforming my lil' corner of the apartment into my favorite place in the world. Hope you enjoy the walk down memory lane!

Returning to the PC World, My How the Landscape Has Changed

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 10:23 AM PDT

I used to build a new PC every other year and then life. For the past few years, I've been a console gamer on PS3/PS4, but with some recent and upcoming game releases, I'm feeling the itch to get back into PC gaming.

I don't have a hard budget because I don't know what things cost these days to hit the games/performance I want, so I'll adjust $ as necessary.

    Target games:

    • Cyberpunk 2077
    • Anno 1800
    • Witcher 3 (has to be there for me!)

    Main goals:

    • Above titles at high or 'ultra' graphic settings with smooth framerates
    • Reliable operation (open to some OC'ing but would prefer it to run as-is)
    • 'Normal' to compact in size, nothing too huge

    Other points and questions:

    • Not brand loyal (Intel, AMD, Nvidia - whatever is the best for its purpose)
    • Is 2x GPU better than 1x higher-end GPU? (SLI/Crossfire vs a single card?)
    • How much RAM is necessary - 16GB minimum plan, use for 32GB?
    • I'd like this to last 2-3 years ideally, with minimal upgrading YOY if possible

I'm not asking for a full build, case selection, etc. I really could use help getting back in the saddle with modern-day PC building. What chips are doing well, what GPUs are garbage, etc. I've been reading reviews nonstop by my head is spinning so I'm turning to the hive for help, TIA.

Edit - For clarity on future replies; no current budget does not mean $10k, I'm still a wee mortal so price/performance ratio is important.

    Mixing Nvidia with AMD

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 12:15 PM PDT

So I have a gtx 1050 ti laying around and in my build I currently have a rx5500 xt. So I was wondering how dumb would it be to use the 1050 ti as my video encoder for streaming and game with the 5500 xt. Would it even be worth the time or is it even possible at all?

Dust accumulation prevention on acrylic window

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 02:58 PM PDT

Hi mens, so I recently rebuilt my system into a massive and gorgeous, if only a bit old-school, 500 Euro LD PC-V8 case. However there is a problem. For one, the temperatures are really not good for a case of this size, but when I build a full-cover water loop that problem will be gone.

The problem in question, however, is dust buildup on the huge plexiglass window. Within a week of the build, the inside of the window was covered in what seemed like smears, as well as a lot of dust (the only intake is very well filtered by the way), which ruins the looks of the PC. Coming from a case with a temprered glass window whic had very little buildup, this was very dissappointing.

Disassembling the case is out of the question, as it requires unscrewing 12 hex screws, as well as screwing them back in when the case is in horizontal orientation, otherwise the panel won't fit well. Naturally, just removing and placing a single panel back takes 20 minutes at least and is a bit tiring.

So finally the question. Is there a spray solution or some kind of film, or whatever else, that could lessen the dust buildup on an acrylic/plexiglass case window without making one cloudy or messy? I am aware that there is no solution that will solve my problem completely, but maybe something that won't make me disassemble my case every two weeks.

Thanks in advance and all the best.

Time to upgrade my GPU and looking for suggestions. Flexible ~$400

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 02:38 PM PDT

    Build:

    • 6700k
    • Gigabyte Z170-HD3P
    • 32gb Corsair Vengeance Pro
    • Sapphire RX 480
    • Cooler Master 700w SilentPro
    • 1440p 75hz primary with 1080 ultrawide 75hz secondary display

My RX 480 has been struggling lately. I've been having issues posting on reboots and waking from sleep that have been solved by sticking in my old R9 280. I've been thinking about upgrading lately, and an hour and a half troubleshooting this morning combined with the possibility of Covid-19 related shortages are making me think I might as well do it now.

My primary usage is Adobe suite (Lightroom, Photoshop, Premiere) and WoW, but play a lot of random stuff as it comes out. I'd like RTX to try out Raytracing Minecraft, and my understanding is that Adobe plays nicer with Nvidia at this point. I've been playing WoW around 7 with some tweaks on their graphics settings and drop to around 45fps occasionally in raids/dungeons. Obviously I'd like to turn it to 11.

I've been kind of tuned out of the scene since a little after the Super line came out, so I'm a little behind. I know Bestbuy has a 2070 Super Founder's edition for $500, which I'm probably okay splurging up to but that would be the monetary limit. I'm mostly questioning what the current state is between the 2060 and 2070 Super/NonSuper/KO lines and performance differences between Founders and Third party cards.

    Thanks in advance!

    SSD game loading speed future?

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 02:33 PM PDT

    Hey all,

With all the progress we have been having with SSDs, nvme, pcie 4, etc, why isn't progress being made on game loading times? Why aren't games basically loading in instantly? Is it just that the technology isn't there yet, or is it something with game engines themselves? I'm just curious, because I think it would be awesome to instantly load a game/game map, etc.

    Thoughts?

Need Help Finding a Comparable Board

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 02:29 PM PDT

So due to a mistake on my part, I ordered this MSI Motherboard (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07J6Z9KJ2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) which happens to be only compatible with 8th and 9th Gen CPU's, and I have a 7th Gen Intel i-5 7400.

Amazon was great to work with and aloud me to return the item and I received the refund credited to my Amazon account. While I know a little bit about specs, I don't know enough to find a comparable and compatible board with my CPU in that same price range. Could you guys help me out? And it has to be from Amazon as my refund was store credit.
