Build a PC: [Build Complete] Project Hades (Microwave PC)

[Build Complete] Project Hades (Microwave PC)

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 01:55 AM PDT

Finished up my favorite project yet, a functional PC in a microwave housing, I call it Project Hades.

So heres the story, I built myself a new rig and took whatever parts I had that were better and gave them to my girlfriend's PC. Thing is, I built my girlfriend's PC out of spare parts I fished out of the Best Buy recycle bin when I worked there and every single one of the components from my old rig was better, so now I have the parts to an entire 3rd PC. I wanted to build it in case I had a friend that was over and wanted to play on it and (mainly) to host servers for minecraft and the like.

Now, I could have just thrown them into an old cheap case, but I figured what the hell lets have some fun with it, hence the microwave. I'll link an imgur album of the build steps, feel free to read through it if you like, and if you don't care for the steps and just want the finished product, it'll be the first couple of pictures.

    Heres the album, enjoy!

Oh also, here is the partlist, yes the vampire PSU was a mistake, yes I had it in my old PC, sue me I was young(er).

    Mobo went up in smoke.

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 08:50 PM PDT

Today randomly, I heard a pop and instantly smelled smoke. The system powers down, then tried to power cycle a few times. I cut the power and popped the lid. White smoke was rising from the vrm heat sink, above the CPU. Think I briefly saw a flame to.

Upon further inspection it looks like one of the vrm chips exploded.

    Pictures:http://imgur.com/a/g9zFBWr

Not sure what could be the cause. My system 5820k at 4.3ghz on an asrock x99 extreme 4 mobo, has been running daily with no real issue for the past 5 years. I'm constantly monitoring system temps, and nothing raised any alarms. My psu corsair hx 850 still powers on and looks to be in good condition, not sure if it caused the problem. I haven't hooked it up to another board, not sure if I even should.

Also don't know if it fried the CPU and ram as well. Not too worried about the gpu since its on a different rail, but I still need to test it to be sure.

Anyone else ever come across this, could the psu be the cause or was it just a worn out vrm chip that failed in the worst possible way?

Can anyone suggest a good 5700 or 2060 on the cheaper side of each, looking to spend around 320-335 I think I'm going to go with the evga 2060 Xc ultra because it is 40 dollars off from 360

Trying to get my PC up to a level where it runs RDR2 on higher settings

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 02:17 PM PDT

Hey all so I built this PC 3 years ago or so, and I'm trying to run Red Dead Redemption 2 on ultra settings, but can't get my FPS to a steady 60..it's usually around 45 or so without lowering the quality.

I don't want to build a whole new computer, but I don't know what to put my money toward. Looking for recommendations on what I should change. Can I get just a new CPU or GPU, or would the upgrade not really be worth it unless I upgraded the Motherboard and basically everything else as well?

is having 3 monitor setup worth?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 12:46 PM PDT

I play League of Legends a lot and I see people with more than one monitor can see 180 of vision so you would always see each side of the river when playing mid. Can my poor gtx 1050 with i3 8100 handle it? Any other games that play well with multiple monitors or should i just upgrade my pc and just buy one monitor ? hmmmm...

Is a Vega FE worth it for 300?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 02:45 PM PDT

I'm going to use it for some light gaming, but otherwise Folding@Home and some crypto mining. Would a Vega frontier edition be worth it for these purposes? Or should I get a GTX 1080? Thanks!

    Best cheap MOBO/CPU combo

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 02:42 PM PDT

I need help! I'm building a new PC. My goal is to be able to play Apex Legends at 144hz 1080p. I've pretty much got my whole build set (already have a 1070ti), all I need is a CPU and MOBO. I was looking at the Ryzen 5 3600, but I wanted to get a cheaper MOBO than those need. Any suggestions?

Will this motherboard support the RAM I want out of the box?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 02:42 PM PDT

I'm finally making the switch from an fx 6300 to a ryzen 7 3700x and with that comes new MoBo and RAM.

My plan so far is to pair it with an x570 Aorus Elite board and 3600MHz C15 RAM (which I actually cannot find any on Amazon as they don't let you sort by timings so if you know how to find it please let me know!)

I noticed on the page I linked the ram says (O.C) in the RAM specs page. Does this mean I must overclock or tweak something to get the RAM running at it's base specs?

My philosophy is generally to set it and forget it with these things. I really don't want to overclock the CPU/RAM until it gets old and needs to keep up, and in fact I've never actually overclocked RAM so it'd be nice to know what I'm getting myself into before I order.

    Building my first (gaming) PC

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 12:04 PM PDT

I consider myself a noob, when it comes to PCs, so your inquire would be appreciated.

So, I started from nothing and I tried to plan a build for a mid-priced gaming PC. This is what I have planned so far, and I plan to proceed with case and cooling a bit further away as I get the hold of these parts.

    CPU Intel Core i7-9700F 8-Core 3.0GHz
Motherboard Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro Wifi
Graphics Card Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Super
    RAM G.Skill Trident Z RGB
Storage Samsung SSD 970 EVO 512GB
Power Supply be quiet! Straight Power 10

I believe these parts are compatible with each other, but as I am not the best at this, if you see some obvious mistakes I have made or to what I should pay more attention, that would be amazing.

1660 Super - "future proof" for VR? Or should I save and upgrade later?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 02:04 PM PDT

Hello! I'm planning a first PC build for for 1080p/60hz gaming, but I'm also looking to buy a VR set later this year when I'm in a better financial situation.

Is a 1660 Super likely to be adequate for new VR titles for at least the next year or so? It'd really push my budget, but I'd stretch if it meant I wouldn't need an upgrade in 12 months. The alternative is to get an entry-level 1080p/60hz card now and upgrade when I buy the VR gear. Which would be the wiser choice?

Obviously, I'm not expecting anyone to predict the future here, but I'm sure you have better knowledge of the upcoming GPU market and/or VR requirements than I do.

    Thanks

Replacing dead GPU with a new one

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 01:44 PM PDT

    Hi all!

My GPU died a week ago and I've just been told it's unrepairable, which sucks during quarantine, but it's time for me to get a new one.

This is my current build right now, for reference. Budget is tight at the moment, so I was thinking on spending 200€, maybe 250€ if really necessary, on a new GPU.

Since my PC is almost 6 years anyways, I was also thinking on upgrading my CPU, but top priority right now is the GPU.

Here is where I need your help, I'm honestly lost with all the different GPUs available right now, and don't know what the best fit is for my build and budget. I'm not planning on changing my monitor or getting more RAM, so I'm not taking into account being able to play with a 144hz refresh rate or something like that.

What GPU do you recomment me? Should I wait a few more months so I can save more and get a better GPU? Should I get a CPU too now, or would it be better to wait?

All comments and suggestions are welcomed!

Help with upgrading Mobo, CPU, and Graphics Card. What should I do regarding drivers/software?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 11:31 AM PDT

Hello all! Will be upgrading my PC for the first specifically my MOBO, CPU, and GPU since I'm selling some parts to a friend

    MOBO: Aorus Gaming 5 X470 --> Asus X470 Pro

    CPU: AMD 2600x --> 3700X

    GPU: Sapphire RX 590 Nitro+ --> Gigabyte 2070 super

My question is what should I do in terms of the drivers and software? I believe Windows 10 is linked to my microsoft account so I don't think I need to purchase another key. But how about the chipset drivers? Will Radeon software still be installed even after I switch out the Mobo? Is it tied to my C: drive? What should I do since I'm going from AMD to Nvidia?

    Thanks!

MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX or Asus ROG B450-F

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 07:27 AM PDT

I am looking to build a new PC with a Ryzen 5 3600 (yes I know, quite daring). And I know the most highly recommended motherboard is the Tomahawk Max, but I really like the look of the Asus ROG. I know there is a price difference, and I am willing to spend a little extra on the Asus for looks. But I just want to know if the Asus board lacks functionality or performance. I am also not sure if the Asus board supports 3rd gen Ryzen our of the box or not (I do know that the tomahawk MAX does support Ryzen 3000). I don't plan on overclocking, and probably won't upgrade for a while if that helps.

    Help picking which GPU

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 11:12 AM PDT

What GPU's should I look at to run all games at 60fps 1080p, I don't want to future proof and go over the top. Would an older card like an rx 580 / 1060 6gb do or would I really need something a bit newer like a 1660/2060 or amd equivalent?

First build - not reading SSD or USB with Windows loaded?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 01:05 PM PDT

Hi, hope this is the right place, first ever PC self build and I've fallen at the last hurdle.

Got BIOS on screen and I've run the software update via ethernet cable to ensure BIOS is latest version.

Sadly it's not reading either the SSD or the USB stick loaded with Windows. I have done all the usual stuff, tried every USB port (keyboard working fine), with and without graphics card, checked all connections in case etc. The USB has been tried in another computer and is working fine. Any ideas? Also any other advice on the setup much appreciated, thanks!

Set up: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X, ASUS TUF X570 Wi-Fi, XFX RX 5700 XT Thicc III, 1Tb Western Digital NVMe M.2 SSD, 2x 8Gb Ballistix RAM, Corsair RM1000X, Cooler Master H500 case
