    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

If you have a FreeSync monitor and an NVIDIA GPU you might need to re-enable G-SYNC after updating your drivers.

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 03:36 PM PDT

I noticed that every time I update my NVIDIA drivers G-SYNC gets disabled and I have to re-enable it manually in the NVIDIA control panel.

    https://imgur.com/a/r30m8tZ

Edit: Some people reported that it happens even with G-SYNC monitors.

Edit2: If you don't see the option to enable G-SYNC in the Nvidia control panel you probably need to enable it in your monitor settings first or maybe try using a DisplayPort cable instead of HDMI if you're not already using it.

Anyone wanna recommend some different parts my budget is around $750 U.S

    Posted: 23 Mar 2020 08:12 AM PDT

    No Way

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 08:00 PM PDT

So, i built my PC about a month ago. It was my first time but I was feeling really confident. I worked for 8 hours on it building and cable managing until, at 4 am it was finished. Not only did it boot, but it was killing on my 1440p monitor. 144 fps in every game on 1440p and for only 900 dollars. Today I had attempted to get overclock it in the past but my CPU overclock was pretty much trash. I couldn't do anything without a black screen. I was confused because to me it seemed like my CPU cooler was working great, rgb was on with the fan spinning for the entire month. Pretty much I was throttling at my cpus stock setting (3.7). So today, out of straight up curiosity I opened up my system, ran some benchmarks, and realized, after a minute of testing, for my entire time with this beast of a pc, I haven't had my cooler event touching it's heatsink. I officially believe that I am one of the dumbest beings on Earth. I guess moral of the story is that if you think something is off about a build, it most definitely is.

What do you think of this build for a heavy use of graphics apps and 1440p gaming at high fps?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2020 05:43 AM PDT

The build is meant for 1440p gaming at 144Hz as well as lots of graphics work (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects & Cinema4D with heavy use of Octane & Cycles and some v-ray renders). Need to have a lot of storage as well. I was considering going for 3950x but I'm not sure it's worth it. I like subtle RGB but its not essential although colour matching is pretty important to me. My budget is £2500 but I MIGHT and (that's a very big might) be able to go over a bit. Would you make any changes? Also WIFI is non-negotiable, I'm going to be going to university and cant guarantee I will be able to have a wired connection.

(Anything priced at £0 will be salvaged from my current pc)

    First PC Build

    Posted: 23 Mar 2020 01:45 PM PDT

So i'm thinking about building my first PC although my dad doesn't really want me to. He thinks we should just buy a pre-built PC from BestBuy: "Click Here" to see. But I am trying to convince him to let me build my first PC as it would be beneficial for the long run, and it would be better to know about my PC. So I drew a little something up on PCPartPicker: "Click Here". I wanted opinions on my build and if there are any better options than what I had chose, if you could help me perfect my PC build it would be appreciated if you left a link below.

As well if you look at the potential issues on PCPartPickere it shows:- B450 chipset may need a BIOS update, or a different CPU- Physical dimensions cannot be checked

I was wondering if anybody could inform me on the BIOS update and how to do it or if im just going to need a different CPU, as well if you could help me know if everything is going to fit into the case it would be appreciated. Thanks for your help!

E: My current PC is pre-built and it has completely gone to shit which is another reason why i'm trying to build one

    First time builder

    Posted: 23 Mar 2020 06:17 AM PDT

I'm trying to figure out how to understand everything to come up with a build so that I can start building after quarantine ends. Anyone have any recommendations on how I can learn to choose parts and everything?

Edit: Lots of people were asking about budget and other questions so I answered them here.

    1. My budget starts at around $1000 but I'll prob end up going higher since aesthetic is extremely important to me.
    2. I'll be using it for gaming, some video editing, streaming (hoping to start my own channel when I build), programming and 3D modeling (solidoworks/fusion 360).
    3. Right now I mainly play siege and apex but I switch up my games regularly so no game gets stale.
    4. I was thinking 1440p since I dont wanna jump up to 4k.
    5. I was thinking a mid size, definitely nothing way too big,
    6. Yes I like RGB

Edit 2: This subreddit is awesome, didn't expect to get so much replies. Much love to everyone and stay safe during this whole pandemic.

Upgrading my PC, what should I upgrade tho?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2020 10:57 AM PDT

Ok so I need an upgrade I think. I ain't happy with how my frames are in-game. I ain't great tho with the technicals tho. Here is a link to all my parts https://pcpartpicker.com/list/nfDJTC , If some kind person could suggest what parts need to be upgraded and what parts should be bought then that'd be great. I am looking for a rough benchmark of 150 fps in games like Call of duty and Cyberpunk (Triple AAA games) since my monitor is 144hz and it's annoying when I can't reach the 144fps marker. Thanks in advance :D

EDIT: Thanks for all comments, Ill try the advice so far, also, stay safe from the virus! good luck gamers!

3000 mhz ram shows up as 2166 mhz ram in bios, product scam or im dumb?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2020 10:08 AM PDT

So built a pc, specs are AMD quad core ryzen 5 3400G 3.7Ghz ASUS PRIME B450M-A USB 3.1 G.Skill aegis 16g (2x8) ddr4 3000mhZ cl16 GALAX GTX 1660 6G FSP HYN 450W ACTIVE Including an ssd and a 1 tb of hardisk. Anyways, just started up my bios and turned D.O.C.P on for the ram to optimize to 3000, tried to start the pc, it tries a couple of times and doesnt work. I turn it off and pit it on auto (disabling thr D.O.C.P) and it runs, the 16 gigs run at 1866 mhz. Ok. So i try to put 3000mhz manually with the volts set at 1.4, try to run it and still crashes. So i check the bios main menu and see that it says G-skill 8 gigabye 2166 mhz. Now thats in the first menu, not the advanced part. Where it just says the dry details of my system. Is that common? Is it a bug? Or they sold me a 2166 ram even though it came inside a sealed package from the store. Would like to know if km dumb or being scammed Thanks all

    Does the "12nm" mean something?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2020 01:00 PM PDT

    Best cooling solution for i9-9900K

    Posted: 23 Mar 2020 10:33 AM PDT

Hello, I am looking for a new cooler as my cooler that I have right now is not doing the job. My cpu is OC @ 5GHZ @ 1.3 volts and temps when benchmarking are 95+ degrees. At idle it's anywhere from 55-60 degrees. The cooler that I have right now is the H115i pro platinum from Corsair. Will a 360mm AIO benefit this situation? I don't feel comfortable leaving it as is because the pc is on 24/7. I was hoping that someone could help me with this issue.
    Thanks

Mobo+Ram suggestions for 3900X Cpu + 1070 SLI need help!

    Posted: 23 Mar 2020 10:28 AM PDT

    hello everyone

Is X570 Aorus Ultra a good choice?

My budget is between 500-600 $ both for rams and mobo.

I want to play DCS World with virtual reality, Squad, Pubg, GTA V, Elder Scrolls Online etc. at ultra settings and the upcoming games like Cyberpunk etc.

    Sorry for my English.

Do I need to upgrade my PSU?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2020 02:04 PM PDT

So, my PSU is fairly old - Rosewill 80+ 500W. Have had it for about 4 or so years (however, only used my pc for about 2-3 years max) and I've had ZERO problems with it. My current GPU AND mobo are bad too - AMD athlon 860k nae crossblade ranger. After negotiating and getting a pretty good deal on ebay, I'm now replacing those two with an intel i7 4790k and a GA-Z97x. Still somewhat old, but much better then what I have. So, even though my PSU has worked perfectly fine for me since I got it, do I need to upgrade? I would really prefer not to since i'm tight on money and I've had no problems, but I'm wondering if i'm facing any risks right now especially changing my MOBO and CPU

    Does 8gb RAM really matter.

    Posted: 23 Mar 2020 08:51 AM PDT

Does RAM really affect gaming performance

I found this really good gaming PC for about £1000, however it only has 8gb ram. Will this really affect gaming performance and could I increase ram at a later date?

These are some of the specs listed:

    Intel® Core™ i5-9400F Processor RAM: 8 GB / Storage: 1 TB HDD & 256 GB SSD Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6 GB

It is also on sale for £800

Need someone else to take a look at my $1400-$1700 build. Gaming isn't the (main) focus, and I'm most uncertain about the Case, Motherboard Graphics card, and anything extra, like cooling.

    Posted: 23 Mar 2020 01:47 PM PDT

TL;DR: If you don't want to read my long-ass post, the important stuff is summarized at the bottom. I would appreciate if you did, though, since some of my choices are odd and it explains them. Also took like 20 minutes to write since I had no idea how formatting worked.

    Current List

    With $300 ASUS Motherboard

    With $200 MSI Motherboard

    With $200 Gigabyte Motherboard

    Use Cases

    • Rendering - Using blender. GPU rendering is the eventual plan.
    • Programming - My biggest use case, but also the least resource intensive.
    • Machine Learning - Mostly just to experiment with.
    • Gaming - 1440p 144hz or better is the aim. I can't tell you what graphical settings (high, ultra, etc.) because I have a shit laptop so anything above changing the settings files to below the lowest predefined option is a massive upgrade.
    • Video / Image Editing - Mostly just simple stuff for these.
    • Anything else - Honestly, I just don't want to have to worry about not being able to do something, and I want to be able to use this computer for several years with just a few upgrades.

    Part Requirements

    • MOTHERBOARD

      • Multiple GPU Slots - Ideally NVIDIA's 3000 series will release within the next year, and I can get a 2080 super or something for cheap, to use for tasks that eat a whole GPU, like rendering.
      • WiFi - Ethernet is not an option for the foreseeable future.
      • M.2 Ports - Give me those sweet 10 second boot times. I have two (or more) operating systems, hence two M.2 NVMe boot drives. I'm tired of dealing with partitioning drives all the time, so I want them separate.
      • BIOS * - I've dealt with all manner of low level stuff while using Linux, but I would really prefer to avoid needing to flash the BIOS, at least for the first boot. Unneeded stress.
      • RAM - Needs to work with the Ram I've included in the list. I'm getting from a friend for $45. Even if it's latency is shit, it's super cheap. I am not even sure if I really need to care about the listed RAM speeds, but just to be safe, I did.
    • CPU - Needs to fast as fuck, hence the 3900x. I never wanna worry that my CPU will be a bottleneck. Also, as I spent 20 minutes writing this, I struggled dearly with preventing myself from immediately buying it since it's $418 right now. By the time you read this, I may have locked myself in.

    • GPU - I don't really know how / why to pick which brand, so help with that will be nice. Aiming for a 2070 Super because it is way cheaper than a 2080.

    • RAM - Needs to be the one I've included. Friend offered it to me for $45 since it's running for $70 right now. I know the latency really high. My wallet is not, so I don't care.

    • STORAGE

      • BOOT - I use Manjaro Linux as my main OS, and I use Windows for anything that works like shit or doesn't work on Linux, hence two 250GB M.2 NVMe drives.
      • DATA - Almost 100% of my Linux data will be stored on the 1TB drive. I will probably partition it so Windows has some extra space for games, or just buy another further down the road.
      • Current Setup - This is just for reference. I have a 1TB Laptop HDD partitioned into 5 main drives Screenshot, or written:
        • Manjaro - OS, 62 / 111 GB
        • ISD - All non OS specific shit, 390 / 559 GB
        • Ubuntu - For a single program that I couldn't get on Manjaro, 28 / 50 GB
        • Windows C: - OS, 97 / 105 GB
        • Windows G: - Windows Only Games, 64 / 100 GB
    • CASE - Needs to fit within a space that is 20 inches deep and 20 inches high. Dust is a huge issue in my room.

    • POWER SUPPLY - Obviously needs to power all this stuff. Getting another GPU may be a problem, but I'm not 100% sure. Outside of that, I would prefer modular, but I also prefer money, so I don't care too much.

    The important parts

    Budget:

    • $1500 - $1700 EXCLUDING monitors & peripherals. I have like 4 extremely generic monitors, several keyboards and mice, and I only really need the high quality ones for gaming. I will get those later as I get more money and they go on sale.

    Current List:

    Notes:

    • Gaming is not the priority. It really is not. As long as I can play them, I am happy (for now).
    • I do NOT care about appearance (except the case). It's going to be in a spot where it can't really be seen.
    • Plan to use PC for years with only small upgrades.

    Questions:

    • Which motherboard should I get? Needs WiFi, 2 GPU slots, Ryzen 3900X support.
    • What GPU should I get / how should I choose? Want a 2070 Super (second GPU later).
    • My room is hot and dusty. How do I make sure my computer doesn't shit itself constantly due to heat?
    • If I buy other ram, will using with this one case issues aside from using the slowest speed? Is latency also affected?
    • Is there anything wrong with that case? Space I have is 20x20, needs good airflow, and I'm a cheap bastard.
    • Is there anything wrong with my build in general?

I made an account for this, so sorry if I fucked something up.

Question about using an old external HDD on new PC

    Posted: 23 Mar 2020 01:14 PM PDT

Sorry if my question doesn't belong in this forum, but I didn't know anywhere else to post...

So I've built a new PC recently and right now I'm in the middle of migration. I have 2 external hard drives that I've been using, and I'm going to keep using them on the new PC. But I remembered that when I got them I had to go through disk management to actually use them.

Do I need to do the same on my new PC, or will the drives magically show up because they've been through with it before? And if I need to do disk management again, will the process harm any data?

Swapping in an SSD from an old build to a new one WITHOUT windows installed?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2020 01:11 PM PDT

I did a bunch of searching and every post is asking about moving an ssd with an OS from one build to another. I'm just going to reinstall windows with a fresh key instead.

However, I also have a few other SSD's that i'll be moving over, will I have to wipe them as well or could I just plug them in and expect everything to work? Or at least files and not programs?

Any guidance on what I should be wiping before I switch would be helpful :)
