    Simple Questions - August 10, 2021

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 05:00 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Should I cap my fps at 190 in apex legends if I have 144hz monitor? With gtx 1660 and i7 9700 or just leave it at 144fps? Is there any difference?

How detrimental is GPU sag? Is it purely a cosmetic issue or can it damage something over time?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 08:06 PM PDT

I have an Asus TUF RTX 3080 and x570 Tomahawk in a Phanteks P500A case, built last November. I am using the anti-sag bracket which comes with the case (it hooks onto the back of the case and keeps the GPU's little prong held down, just like JayzTwoCents discusses), unfortunately it doesn't seem to do much. Wiggling the card never moved the prong like it did in Jayz's video, so I think the card itself might be flexing.

    I've taken photos here.

Normally I don't care about cosmetic issues (as you can probably tell by the dust and my not so clean cabling - also the clear side of the case normally faces the wall). However, I've read conflicting reports as to whether or not a heavy gpu can ruin the card or motherboard over time (e.g., if I leave it this way for several years). Some say that there's no risk of damage since GPUs and PCIe ports are designed for this, unless of course the case gets bounced around when moving it.

My motherboard manual, however, says the following:

If you install a large and heavy graphics card, you need to use a tool such as MSI Gaming Series Graphics Card Bolster to support its weight to prevent deformation of the slot.

Is this a serious concern or is MSI just fear-mongering to get me to buy their stupid (and also overpriced, poorly rated, and quite frankly ugly) bolster? Should I purchase another GPU bracket? If so, what kind would you recommend? Or should I just forget about it and not worry?

    UPDATE:

    Wow this exploded!

Alright, y'all just convinced me to give one of these a try.

This is almost a year's worth of dust buildup. My computers have always gotten dusty, in all the houses I've lived in. It looks dustier in the photo than it really is due to the flash, but regardless I've got a pack of microfiber cloths I can use to wipe it up.

    Thank you everyone :)

    My first build 3090 + 10900K

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 06:29 AM PDT

So after a few months planning it all out I finally have my completed build. Here's the final list of everything. This was well worth the few headaches it caused during the days of building. https://imgur.com/a/9qQQEsv

    Case: Lian Li O11D

    CPU: I9-10900K

    GPU: Asus strix 3090 white

Motherboard: Asus Rog Maximus XIII Hero

RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB pro SL 64GB DDR4 3600MHz

Cooling: Asus rog strix LC360 AIO

    Storage: Samsung 970 evo plus 2TB nVME ssd(also have a 1TB) Samsung 1TB 980 SSD

    Fans: Lian Li AL120

    PSU: Corsair RM850x

The 3090 is way bigger than I expected in this case I ran into some issues with the triple 8 pin Lian li strimers and not having much room to set them up initially and it wasn't til after I put it all together I found out you could flip them. But even without the second strimer in I'm pretty happy with the build and I absolutely love the new AL120 fans.

First time building a PC. It was fun though.

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 01:28 AM PDT

    Hi r/buildapc

After reading many posts here for years, It's time for mine.

About 3 weeks ago, I was wandering around and found a really good offer for older gen.'s parts. So I decided to complete 1 of my dream list.

It took about 5 hours of continuous assembling and disassembling. The hardest part is to find the correct order to assemble.

I like the form-factor of this case. It sit nicely under my shallow desk.

The Noctua NH-D15S is really quiet and surprisingly cool. The fan cases are much more noisier.

    My PC spec:

    • MONITOR: ASUS Proart Display PA247CV
    • CPU: Intel Core i9-10900KF
    • CPU COOLER: Noctua NH-D15S
    • MOBO: ASUS ROG STRIX B560-I Gaming Wifi
    • GPU: ASUS Cerberus GTX1050TI O4G
    • CASE: Thermaltake The Tower 100 Black
    • RAM: 32GB Kingston HyperX Fury RGB (16GB*2) DDR4 XMP-3200MHz
    • SSD: 500GB WD BLACK SN750 NVME
    • PSU: 550W (80+ Bronze) ANTEC ATOM B550
    • UPS: 1200VA/900W Advice Ultrasine (Pure Sinewave)

    Thank you.

Me and my 10 year old PC

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 01:07 AM PDT

I built my first (and last) PC 10 years ago. I didn't have much money at that time. So I went with an i3 2100, 4gb DDR3, MSI h61m board, 500gb HDD. The only upgrade I have made on it is add a 250gb SSD. I run Linux on it for better performance. It does fine for most tasks. I edit 1080p video just fine (viewing at lower resolution) in Adobe Premiere Pro (windows) and Kdenlive (Linux). Davinci Resolve refuses to run on it because of the intel integrated graphics I presume. Blender runs like butter on Linux ablate being laggy on windows. Rendering takes a long time but unfortunately I have to deal with it. This post is for other people with fairly good PCs crying about the hardware. The 10 year old cheapo PC still runs fine and will continue to do so. But I am currently saving up for a new PC, This time I can afford some more powerful hardware. Hope it goes well. Meanwhile heres to 10 more years for my first PC build.

    NewEgg shuffle winner! Help =D

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 12:46 PM PDT

    Hey everyone

Like anyone else, I can't believe I actually won.

I'm currently rocking an EVGA RTX 2080ti XC ULTRA, I've had it for almost 2 years now.

NewEgg shuffle is offering me a "MSI Ventus GeForce RTX 3080 - RTX 3080 VENTUS 3X 10G OC LHR"

Back in the good old days, I'd hit gpuboss.com for a comparison.

But this website actually did the job quite well.

It doesn't look like I'm gaining much in the way of performance, just wondering what the community thinks.

FYI I'm upgrading my MoBo this weekend to an Asrock Z590 Taichi, PCIE 4.0 ready.

    EDIT Also installing i7 11700k

    Thanks everyone

With all due respect to my Canadian and Australian brothers...

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 01:32 PM PDT

I love you guys, but any time you post something related to budgets or prices, you gotta specify CAD or AUD. If you just write "$", most people will assume you mean USD, and any advice you get will be irrelevant. It's a waste of your time and a waste of time for people volunteering to help you.

I know it seems Americentic to assume any reference to "$" automatically means USD. But the plain truth is that the US is the largest market and has a significantly higher population than other countries using dollars. So the assumption will always be USD unless stated otherwise.

Purchasing advise is always country specific, so your country should really be the first thing you specify when you want advice on what to buy.

If AM4 is about to be replaced is now a bad time to build a high end PC?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 11:03 AM PDT

My 5 year old PC is struggling a lot. I have the money to spend almost £3000 on a PC and I've picked every part minus the motherboard however I just read that AM4 is basically being replaced in 6 months and DDR5 is coming sometime next year as well.

Is now a terrible time to get a new high end PC? I was hoping it would be future proof however now I've realized it won't be at all and I'd probably need to replace the CPU, MB and RAM in 3 years.

I also know X570 motherboards are coming soon without chipset fans which is something I've been trying to avoid so that's another reason why it seems like a terrible time to build a PC? At the moment it seems to I have to choose a b550 or something really expensive like the Dark Hero.

I just wondered what the general opinion is. I don't want to pay so much money if it's essentially going to be seriously outdated in certain aspects in 6 months (even if the power is still really strong)

CPU constantly running at max clock, PC freezing

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 11:56 AM PDT

    https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/o8dgij/cpu_running_at_max_clock_constantly/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

This is a previous post I've made before, and I downloaded the Ryzen power plan and it seems to make the freezing worse. Every hour or so my PC completely freezes and the only way to turn it off is manually with the button on the case, and I think the CPU running at max clock is causing the problem.

    Any other possible ideas?

    Thanks guys

If I put one of my speakers on top of my case, will the vibration affect my HDD's lifespan?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 08:05 AM PDT

I have a very small apartment and a relatively small desk (for my preference, at least - 30"x60") and will soon be having two monitors with this setup. My desk speakers won't fit unless I raise the monitors uncomfortably high to have the speakers beneath them or make stands for the speakers to sit above the monitors. I was thinking about simply putting one of the speakers on top of my Lian Li O11D to avoid trying to fit two stands, but I'm worried that the vibrations might lower the life expectancy of the disks in my main storage drive. Does anyone here know one way or another if that is something I should be concerned with?

Edit: There are a lot of comments saying that the issue is the magnetic drivers in the speakers. Some background:

These are Edifier R1700BTs. I'm not putting some huge, high-powered speakers on my PC.

These speakers don't typically see a lot of use - I use them only occasionally for movies or music and spend 90% of my time using the computer with my headphones on instead.

Considering the fact that nothing magnetic is attracted to the back or sides of these speakers, and how extremely strong the magnets inside hard drives are, it is extremely unlikely that the magnetic fields generated by the speaker will in any way interfere with the operation of my drive.

My Palit RTX 3080 is making a lot of noise, is this normal?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 10:26 AM PDT

    Hello everyone

I've had my Palit RTX 3080 for about 10 months now, and the performance has been good. The noise from my PC however is beginning to nag at me. I have made a couple of test to make sure it isn't my CPU AIO or the case fans making the noise, it is definitely not. The noise starts to get really annoying for one of the fans at 40-50% utilization and the other at about 70% utilization.

This is what my GPU looks like RTX 3080 GamingPro OC

The fan that is making the most noise is the one closest to the mounting bracket.

Here is me testing the two fan settings.

Here is me testing the noise at different speeds.

The noise that is bothering me, is not the sound of the air getting moved. Ist the "vacuum/hoover" sound. The "uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu" for lack of a better description.

Both of the videos are behind the glass of the case, so this is what I hear. And I hear it through my headphones, that is why it is bothering me so much,

My question, is this normal? Is there something wrong with the card, or should I just be less sensitive and turn up me headphones?

    Hope you can help me.

Need part suggestions for a PC for analyzing large datasets and generating visualizations (also gaming).

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 01:00 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Analyzing and running calculations on large datasets, then generating visualizations with the data.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Gaming at the moment is less essential. 1080p 60fps gaming for lightweight games. For example, at the moment Ive been playing Stardew Valley, Minecraft and Terraria. I plan to play some Valheim in the future. Overall, no heavy games.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

$1200 USD (although I am in Canada, so $1500 CAD). I can go a couple hundred over this if necessary.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Canada

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

This is a mockup I created. All I know is for that for the work I do, RAM and CPU are very important. Thats why I've chosen 32gb of RAM. Also I know about the GPU shortage, so I wanted to get a CPU with integrated graphics, as this build is on a deadline. I can worry about GPU later if I cant find one now.

As for MOBO and PSU, literally no clue. I know Seasonic is a good brand, so I went with them at 650W. The MOBO is a mystery to me, could really use help. I added a WIFI card because I cant guarantee Ill have a hardwired connection. Maybe I can find a MOBO with WIFI built in?

    My First PC Build

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 12:00 PM PDT

Finally finished my first build. It took forever to get a GPU and finally won one on Newegg Shuffle. Here's the final list of everything. I don't think I need to upgrade for a long while. Was surprised how much new stuff you can get on eBay for 30-40% off the original price.

Was only able to OverClock to 4.149 MHz, don't think I can go any higher.

The only issue I had was I didn't realize how small the case was and the power supply isn't ideal for wire management :( should have gone with SFX PSU.
