Why do mobile processors use an order of magnitude less power than desktop processors? Posted: 23 Mar 2020 07:29 AM PDT Something I've noticed with computing hardware over the years is the difference in power usage between mobile and desktop hardware. E.g. a GTX2080 drawing 250W compared to an Snapdragon 855 drawing like 5W, of course their graphical capabilities are very different, but I wouldn't of said the 2080 is 50 times better, not even 10 times better. What is driving such a dramatic difference; is it the architecture, the design constraints, the thermal considerations? (ofc I expect some difference, it just seems like a lot) Edit: Thanks all for the technical responses, really informing! I guess I was just really looking at the output of these devices, and to me it doesn't scale linearly to the power consumption, I didn't realize just how nonlinear the relationship was.
