    /r/buildapc hits 2 million subscribers - it’s giveaway time!

    Posted: 06 Mar 2020 04:06 PM PST

Well /r/buildapc, we just became a community of 2 million PC builders. To put that number in perspective, there are more of you than the entire population of Latvia. It's also 117,647 of you per sentient moderator, which is kinda terrifying.

It's time to celebrate the only way /r/buildapc knows how: partnering with some amazing hardware manufacturers and retailers to give away all kinds of PC related swag. Let's get down to business.

    What's the plan?

Since /r/buildapc launched, over two million posts have been submitted to /r/buildapc. Most of those are PSU tier lists and praise for PCPartPicker, but a couple are genuine PC build posts - we want to find the best of them and reward the incredible efforts their owners have gone to.

To do so, we're asking you to submit your Build Stories. Put simply, we want you to tell us the tale of your PC from origin to completion in 300-500 words. And we've teamed up with some incredible companies to reward your efforts.

Would you buy an open box GPU

    Posted: 07 Mar 2020 12:19 PM PST

So a microcenter near me has a 2080 super thats open box for $130 discount. To me, this is huge. It has the same 30 day return policy and manufacturer warranty. Would you all buy it? Should i be concerned that it was likely returned because it was defective?

My download was way too fast!!! And I want to know why.

    Posted: 07 Mar 2020 11:11 AM PST

I'm building my first desktop. I'm not a complete noob, because I have been a repair technician for over a decade, but most of my work has been on mobile devices.

Here is my build so far. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/mkrsMc My ISP is Spectrum @ 100Mbps, with spectrum provided equipment, a combination modem/router. Only connected through wifi, and my router, modem, and WiFi card, are all limited lowered than a Gb.

This build is barely a couple weeks from start, so please take it easy on the criticism.

My end goal for the storage, is to have 6 vnme drives in a VROC raid array. I have the key, and the CPU to support it, now I just need to sell the drives I have and get intel drives. BTW... If anyone wants a 512gb nvme SSD, I'm selling them for $50/each.

Here is what is going on... I have my system installed on a Samsung 850 1tb sata drive. I had my 6 nvme drives in a software raid0 array, because I couldn't use VROC yet. I had one more m.2 slot to populate, so I deleted my array, and reconstructed it with the 7th drive. All of my games were on the old array, and I was going to have 10-ish hours for them to download while I was at work.

About 5-ish minutes after my brother and I left for work, I remoted in to check my download. To my shock, Forza 4 (a 75GB download), which I had started right when I left, was 75% downloaded already, and was downloading at 1.2Gb/s. This seemed impossible on multiple levels, but it completed within a couple of minutes, and I played it that night.

Some have suggested that it may have been using a local Xbox or PC, if found on the local network. There is one Xbox with forza 4 installed, although I do know it was off, and I'm not sure how it could read data, without spinning up the hard drive. Also, my theoretical limitations of the integrated WiFi on the board is gigabit, which my speed was past. And no, it is not anywhere on the system drive... That was my first assumption, so I thoroughly searched it.

    What is going on here???

Is the I7 4770k still viable for gaming today?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2020 12:15 PM PST

I just found a used one for 90 USD which is pretty good where I live.

I have an FX-8320 which is bad for gaming right now, so I would like to upgrade the cheapest but most efficient way possible. If I would buy a DDR4 CPU that would throw the costs up a lot so I don't know if going for this I7 4770k would be worth it.

Also, my GPU is an R9 280x which I'm planning upgrading, and I play on 1080p 144hz.

How do I even get started?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2020 06:32 AM PST

I am looking through all of the parts to build a pc (the big seven), and I have never built one before. I generally know nothing about what all of the numbers on the different parts mean (I.e. what are cores in a processor?). It all seems very daunting to pick between parts when you don't even know how to figure out what basis you're picking the parts on. Does anyone have a guide to learning what all of the numbers and statistics for each component means? I have tried to watch beginner tutorials on YouTube but even the beginner tutorials are advanced in terms of requiring you to know what 3.6 gHz means or something like that. I had to watch a video to even figure out the big 7, as before that I had no idea what their purpose even was.

EDIT: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/RM4cBZ ... this is a preliminary build that I made only by picking parts that 1) were compatible 2) were in my budget, and 3) that were well rated. I actually don't really know what my parts are "good for". If anyone has any explanations or suggestions, I would love to hear them!

Can’t install Windows on either by SSD or HDD

    Posted: 07 Mar 2020 02:52 PM PST

I have a B450 Tomahawk and a Ryzen 5 2600x. I'm trying to install Windows on my SSD but I keep getting the error message of "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. the selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI system, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks"

Any idea how to fix this?? Within BIOS?

My first PC build ever. Don't want it to explode. Need feedback

    Posted: 07 Mar 2020 02:44 PM PST

This is my first PC build and I would appreciate some feedback on it and tell me if it will work. Plus if it's an ok build for what I'll be using it for.

I will be using the pc for work as a graphic designer so I'll use programs like photoshop, premiere, illustrator, and after effects. But also I play games like your typical mmos and fps plus I want to play games like "The Witcher" and "Sekiro" (I don't mind playing with lower settings).

    My budget is under $1000.

This will be my first pc build and I ordered all PC my components, then checked out compatibility (pretty dumb I know...) and now I am quite nervous.

    Posted: 07 Mar 2020 01:06 PM PST

So I have ordered an AMD Ryzen 7 3700x CPU, an RTX 2070s GPU, so far so good I think... I just now checked for compatibility with the motherboard (apart from basic AM4 vs Intel compatibility) and I ordered an ASUS TUF x470-Plus Gaming MBD. And I have done some research and I understand that the BIOS might not be up to date to support this CPU. Is this something I should be concerned about? Should I risk it and build it anyway? Or is it best to order a compatible Motherboard?

Hi Reddit, I'm looking to build my first beefy PC after using hand-me-down PCs and tablets my whole life.

This build will be for 70% gaming and 30% programming. Hoping to spend ~$2000, including a gaming monitor and a utility monitor.

    Questions:

    - Are there any gotchas that I should look out for? I think the motherboard has all the necessary ports, and I think everything will fit in the computer case.

    - Is it "well balanced"? Are there any bottlenecks that I'm wasting money on?

    - Is a CPU cooler necessary? I don't plan on overclocking, and I'm including a few fans.

    - My motherboard says it only has 3 fan connectors, but the case has slots for 4 fans. Would it be worth getting a fan connector splitter so I can add a fourth fan? Or are the three fans enough (the two be quiet ones and the fan included with the case)?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2020 07:58 AM PST

Hoping I don't get downvoted too much for this. Long story short, my partner and I have been looking to finally get into PC gaming. I've always been a gamer, but have played console for the majority of my life.

We've finally started putting money away and was planning on spending about $1400-1700 (keyboard, mouse, and monitor will be separate purchases).

As more and more information comes out about the Series X comes out, I'm a little worried that this might not be a super strong year for building a PC value wise at that price point.

I've seen a few videos about pc people talking about how impressive the series x sounds on paper. Is the series x using a graphics chipset that isn't available to the PC market?

Anyways what are people's thoughts about this?

    Thanks for reading

Last minute opinions before I go ahead and buy the rest!

    Posted: 07 Mar 2020 05:42 AM PST

I just wanted a last minute opinion and maybe help on these parts for my first pc! Is 550w enough for my 1660s and maybe an upgrade in the future? I already have the gpu so don't need to buy that and the budget for these parts is around AU$1000 and I'm going for a black and white build

    Thank you!!

Can someone find holes in my build?

Any reason why I am getting no display signal to my monitor

    Posted: 07 Mar 2020 11:20 AM PST

I'm not getting any signal to my monitor form my computer I built last night. I've plugged the HDMI cable into both the mother board and gpu. I'm thinking it's the power supply that I have because it's missing 4 pin connector I believe that plugs into the mother board. Should I buy another power supply or try something else first

WD Green vs WD blue for an M.2 SSD?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2020 02:47 PM PST

I'm looking to upgrade my 120Gb SSD to a bigger one and these 2 are the only 500gb m.2 ssd's within my budget.

In my country the WD blue costs $95 and the green one is $75 but I've read that the WD green is DRAM-less and that's bad for SSDs. Is paying $20 extra for the blue one worth it or should I stick with the green one ?

I'm only planning to store my OS, basic programs and some games in it.
