Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, was approached by IBM during their search for a new CEO

Among those approached were Lisa Su, chief executive of chipmaker AMD, though ultimately the company opted for an insider by anointing Mr Krishna, whose recent career trajectory showed he was being groomed as a potential successor.

BTW FT has a paywall, so if the link above doesn't work, Google the title, "Ginni Rometty steps down as IBM tackles cloud era", and then click into it, and it will work.

    New Tigerlake Motherboard?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 05:45 PM PST

When intel showed off Tigerlake earlier this year, they also showed off a new, much smaller, motherboard:

    https://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-previews-10nm-Tiger-Lake-with-Xe-DG1-graphics-and-integrated-Thunderbolt-4.449318.0.html

Has there been any news/leaks on when/if this motherboard is coming? Its obviously big news for laptops, as it means manufactures can fit larger batteries in laptops.

This to me is more exciting than the CPU improvements.

Does anyone come across Tyan hardware? I remember it in magazine's in the late 90's & early 2000

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 06:33 AM PST

I was just looking at a picture of some old motherboards and it made me remember the magazines I would get that had "cutting edge" products & electronics, kind of like a miniature aliexpress monthly magazine with lots of stuff from Taiwan (and other countries, but a lot from Taiwan). There were always mobo's from Tyan (Taiwanese company) for sale and they were always relatively expensive but they were "1/2 price", but still like 20-30% more than an Intel or another good brand. I remember seeing them being pushed a lot on discount sites back when sites like Mwave (pre Newegg) were around and I did some warranty work on pre-built systems they sold.

I looked at all the small chinese electronics companies that seemed to get pretty big in the last ~10 years and wondered why Tyan never grabbed any of that market share that seemed to be ripe for the picking. Lots of small companies that weren't even around when Tyan was of decent size grew into what seem to be much more well known companies.

I wonder if it has to do with the China vs Taiwan issue and if Tyan deals/trades with China or not. I could see if it doesn't have access to China's market for parts, it would severely hamper it's growth.

Importance of Intel SGX and its performance impact.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 03:09 AM PST

I'm following a guide on notebookreview.com about tweaking my I7-8750H with the intent of extracting the most out of it. The guide suggests to disable the Intel SGX option on the bios, but it's not explained why it should be done. My fear is that doing so will leave my system vulnerable.

    Thoughts?
