    Simple Questions - January 31, 2020

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 04:11 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Dont forget to clean inside your case folks

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 11:49 PM PST

I just opened up my case for the first time in a embarrassing amount of time. I opened panels I never knew could be opened. It was...gross. my CPU instantly went from 70c to 45c just by cleaning everything. Make sure you are giving your PC some TLC

I'm waiting patiently for the 3080ti, since I had no faith in first gen RTX. My 1070 just died. Press F to pay respects, and pray for my integrated graphics experience for the next 7 months.

Had a heart attack when my PC suddenly turned off earlier tonight. Immediately assumed it was a PSU failure or best case scenario a thermal shutdown (it's hot as fuck in Australia atm). Waited. No dice.

Did the PSU paper clip test and the fans came on which was unexpected. Removed the power to the 1070, suddenly the system posts. To be honest I wish it was a PSU failure, this sucks.

First PC build in over a decade 2080ti / 3950x

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 10:57 AM PST

    https://i.imgur.com/GOyAAEA.jpg

So having built my last PC well over a decade ago, with a sweet Nvidia 9800GT, I fancied moving back to desktops and having another go at a PC build. I've been using an Alienware M15x laptop that finally needed retiring.

I decided to go absolutely all out with this build for no other reason than wanting to have an absolute beast, though the reasoning to the wife was that I needed it for my CS degree that I've just started online ha.

Used a full EK water cooled system with 3 x 360 rads, and a watercooled 2080ti. The most annoying part was not having a bracket to mount the pump onto the bottom fans/rad and this took over a week to arrive due to a postage error! It's also a bit of a tight squeeze with the graphics card and pump and it wouldn't have fit if I hadn't mounted the card vertically. I also couldn't make my mind up regarding fan configuration so ended up swapping the rads and fans around multiple times until I was happy with airflow in from bottom and back and out the top.

Cable management was also fun (note sarcasm) due to the 10 RGB fans. At first I was very confused how to plug these in as my last build didn't have RGB but I then discovered the motherboard headers after reading the manual!!

I really enjoyed doing this build and the machine is an absolute beast.

My new baby and thank you so much!

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 08:29 AM PST

If you don't want to read the whole thing I would just like you guys to know I'm thankful and would like to say a huge thank you to this community!

I was always scared to build my own PC as I always felt like I would screw something up and waste all my money but after I bought my PC that's built for me I thought I might as well use my old PC parts mixed with some new parts to build my girlfriend a gaming PC.

When I posted here for the first time with my questions I was quite nervous that everyone was gonna be like how stupid is this guy but could not believe the amount of comments I got with suggestions and advice! I can't be more thankful for it.

Even though the specs on my girlfriend's PC is worse than mine and like half the price, there is just something about building your own PC that makes me like my girlfriend's PC way more than my own. I'm not planning to have a kid anytime soon and I think this is the closest I felt to having my own little baby haha.

Once again I like to thank this community and if I ever need a new PC I will definitely be building it myself from now on!

I'm a life-long apple user and I'm switching to windows to build a dual RTX 2080ti machine... HELP!

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 10:47 PM PST

Greetings - I'm a life long apple user, and now my work requires me to render photorealistic CGI. To be more specific, the plan is the take advantage of Arnold Renderer's new GPU acceleration, and to do this I intend to SLI two RTX 2080 Ti cards. This is something impossible to do on the Apple platform, so I'm faced with building a PC.

My budget is about approximately $3.5 - $4k. Ideally would like to come in a little under - but don't want to cheap out where it counts.

    That being said:

    • I've heard that Nvidia SLI isn't supported on AMD motherboards. [EDIT] RESOLVED... it is supported! Thx u/uradonkey003

This task is overwhelming, and I never thought I'd ditch OSX, I'm not about to let my petty preferences get in the way of using the right tool for the job, and it's clear the right tool is a custom build windows machine.

SO... I'm open to suggestions on this build, motherbord, PSU, CPU, brand of RTX card, cooling, ram, everything, even just words of caution or encouragement.

Respect and karma in advance to everyone kind enough to help out. :)

To ReBuild or Not ReBuild, That is my question.

    Hey ya'll,

I've been thinking about building a new rig, used for streaming and gaming. I'm mainly thinking of using one of Scattervolt's build video for it, price is around US$ 1000.

But I was also considering if I should upgrade my first build. The only issue with that is I don't know how to do it or where to start. I Love my current PC but I want to upgrade her.

So these are the currents specs of My PC:

Want to build a PC for Gaming

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 01:05 PM PST

Hey r/buildapc. I want to build a PC that's used for gaming. Primarily I play games like CSGO, LoL, r6, PoE and some others that come and go. Currently I own a laptop that is dying so far and cannot run games like r6 at 60 fps. It runs it at like 30 fps and it gets choppy. PoE also takes about a minute or two to load per map which gets annoying.

I plan on building something along the lines of this

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/TDkK27

and was wondering this will work to play most games smoothly. I don't know much about building PC's so any help would be great. Thank you!

    Good build for 1500?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 01:57 PM PST

I've been looking on Reddit and Youtube for about a month now trying to figure out an all around good first PC to build and wanted to be around 1500 or less. It'll be for some gaming and web browsing mostly. Wanted a home computer and figured why not build one. Went with the X570 because I wanted wifi and bluetooth built in and the 2070 super for looks, reliability and 1440p gaming. Also threw in some RGB stuff because aesthetics. With tax returns filed, figured I would post this here before buying the parts. I live about 2.5hrs away from a micro center(Yonkers store) so i might make the trip down to buy some of the parts as well so save money. Here's the build and please tell me what you think!

What's the best upgrade for my current PC?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 01:03 PM PST

So I'm extremely overdue on a new PC, but my financial situation isn't nearly stable enough for a complete upgrade.

    Motherboard: MSI Z97 Gaming 3

CPU: Intel Core i5-4440, LGA 1150 socket

    GPU: ASUS GTX 970 STRIX

    RAM: 8GB DDR3, 2x4GB

Out of these, which would give me the best possible upgrade to get atleast another year out of my PC, if possible? I'm starting to struggle to play new games, such as Modern Warfare and Need for Speed: Heat.

Modern Warfare may just be terribly optimized since it randomly crashes to desktop with no error, and stutters constantly. Heat on the other hand I can still almost max it out, although my framerate dips below 60 and it hurts.

But anyway, any help with trying to boost the specs of this PC would be a huge help

    Ryzen 3600 + 5700 xt best value / money

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 02:45 PM PST

Hi guys, can you make some criticisms with arguments for this build https://pcpartpicker.com/list/kCW7p8 please?

Priority is 1080p 144 hz gaming for multiplayer (apex, remnant). With some single player (witcher, cyberpunk, metro) and coop games and future proof.

Most of the questions to the PSU. Someone says that 500 watts - is good, someone - that you need to take 700+

    Cpu cooler upgrade not posting

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 10:58 AM PST

I built a new pc a week ago that i finally got my cooler for today, i swapped it out today and it's no longer posting

Its a 3900x that i had the stock wraith prism cooler on and swapped with an Nh-D15, motherboard is showing a red light on CPU now and I've tried reseating the cpu, gpu and ram, clearing CMOS, replugging psu cables and swapping back to the wraith cooler, i also tried starting the pc without a cooler and the cpu did not get hot.

    Is the CPU dead?

    Specs:

    AMD 3900x

    2x16GB Samsung vengance lpx 3200mhz

    X570 Aorus ultra

Evga 1300w PSU (Had it from before)

    Gigabyte 1080ti gaming oc

2tb Adata nvme ssd, 500gb kinston ssd and a spare 1tb hdd

I also updated the BIOS yesterday in case that would have anything to say

How do I improve my GPU thermals/temps? See the below details.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 02:41 PM PST

I have an Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti Pheonix Edition. I wouldn't even be hitting high-max loads on my GPU and the temps would be getting to 80+ degrees Celcius playing a game like "Rust" or "Jedi: The Fallen Order" while my CPU is at around 60 Celcius. This isn't in all cases, obviously less demanding games like CSGO or R6 don't get above 65 degrees Celcius. How can I improve my GPU's thermals (I'm open to any ideas, both costly and non-costly)? Or is this even a problem, it may be normal?

    Ram: 8GB

    Processor Decision Assistance

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 10:37 AM PST

I am currently running a 7700k with a 2080ti trying to push 5120x1440 at 120hz. Obviously the 7700k is bottle necking my 2080ti at this resolution.

My options as I see it are:

    • 9900KF (don't care about the iGPU, and without it temps are lower as is the price)
    • 9700KF (don't care about the iGPU, and without it temps are lower as is the price)
    • 3900X
    • 3700X
    • Deliding the 7700k and using liquid metal to squeeze a little more out of the 7700k while waiting for the 10th Gen Intel or Zen 3

I've never built with AMD, and Zen 2 isn't that exciting to me since it's gaming performance seems to be 5% to 10% below Intel. Seems small, but at this resolution every percent counts.

The machine would be purely for gaming, with some web browsing and some lighter work when I'm home from the office. I might be using it for virtualization via Hyper-V in the future.

I'd like to wait until 10th Gen Intel, but no announcement at CES 2020 makes me realize it might be a ways out. That being said, I won't be moving forward until mid March most likely.

Really just looking for opinions. I'm a bit hesitant to do the delidding since I've never done it and it would be ~$40-70 dollars in tools and paste that I'd much rather put towards a new CPU.

    Edit: Fixed some typos

This might be a stupid question but after setting up my pc and doing stuff on it for the first time things just look kinda weird? I use my PS4 on this same tv and that looks fine so it has to be my pc. Any ways to make things not look like they've been deep fried and put into 120p?

Ryzen 5 1600 AF price increase

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 09:36 PM PST

It's now $99. Rip the best value option on the market. It's not quite a dead value as it's still $20 cheaper than the 2600, but man it was the go-to and now it kinda let the rest of the other budget options back onto the scene.
