    Simple Questions - January 16, 2020

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 04:09 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Looking for advice on an ITX build for my girlfriend!

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 05:41 AM PST

    Hi /r/buildapc!

My recent build went fantastic, and during the build I included my girlfriend in the process. She was too scared to do some parts of the building (didn't want to bend pins), but she was a fantastic help and I feel very lucky to be able to share this hobby with her :)

Which got me thinking: she's using an old Macbook as her main/only computer, and I'd like to repurpose the parts from my last build into a new build for her!

I've already made a mistake though. She mentioned a long time ago that she likes smaller PC's, and I bought a NZXT H510 to build her PC in. I was planning to reuse the old mATX mobo in her build, but that case is a mid/full ATX tower, and isn't as small as I was expecting. So I'm switching the plan up and deciding to go ITX to achieve the form factor she likes.

I'm likely going to return the case (bought from Amazon so all is well) and exchange it for an NZXT H200. I'm willing to drop a little bit more money and build on ITX for her, but I can't seem to find a perfect mobo.

Here's the build, all I need to buy are the H200 case (via exchange) and a new ITX mobo.

    | **Total** | **$79.98**

I need the mobo to be compatible with the parts in that list, as well as under $100 if possible. She doesn't do any type of intense gaming, maybe some indie games every now and then, so no gaming capabilities are required.

I was thinking about this option, but it seems to require some weird power adapter.

Thanks for any help! I'll be building it in the next 2 weeks once parts get here, just in time for Valentine's Day :)

TL;DR: Looking for Z97 ITX motherboard that can fit into an NZXT H210 for under $100. Any help appreciated!

Someone has to be in the bottom 1% of what passes QC, sometimes its you.

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 01:18 PM PST

Here is a little story for you guys.

Built a machine just after the launch of Zen+/Ryzen 2000.

    • 8Gb Corsair Vengence LPX 3000/15 RAM (hynix afr or mfr I dont recall),
    • Asus prime plus b350 motherboard,
    • G3 supernova 750 PSU,
    • Ryzen 2600
    • (rest of the build isn't relevant)

Built the machine, tried to overclock the CPU, was able to boot up to about 4.2 but it wasn't stable, couldn't get it all core stable past 3.95 on the stock cooler. WATER COOLING i thought, that will be cool. So I picked up an H100iV2. tried again. Still, able to boot to 4.2 with nutty voltage but couldn't get it stable. Even at 4.1 it would fall apart once it hit 65C, so I was stuck in this "more voltage and i lose stability to heat, less voltage I just loose stability" limbo. It was mostly okay for gaming, but I also do some heavy encoding on the machine, so I needed it rock stable. best I could do UNDER WATER was 4.0.

Then I tried to OC my ram using ryzen dram calculator, was a no-go but i figured crappy mfr/afr was to blame. Really wanted to be able to dial in 3200 cl14 but honestly 3200 cl16 would have been okay (since with GDM my 3000/15 was actually running 3000/16). I could boot up to 3400/14 but nothing would pass memtestHCI

Well, a few months later, 8gb wasnt cutting it so I got some Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB 16gb ram (Hynix Cjr) and was pretty pumped, I kept reading about how CJR was getting clocks as high, if not higher than Samsung B-Die (with looser timings). I was able to tighten down to 3000/14 but my subtimings were through the roof. I thought "maybe its my board that sucks.... I plan on getting a 3000 or 4000 series Ryzen chip in the future, so ill grab a x470 Taichi from micro-center... just to see. Well I bought that board and NOTHING changed. Nothing. Same CPU clocks, Same memory clocks, and my RGB ram wasnt working properly with it (some spd write setting..... w/e). So I cut my losses and just returned that board.

Every few months over the last few years I thought "maybe I am doing something wrong" so I would try again, ask for help, and get tons of answers like "you are doing something wrong, try changing your PROCODT to xxOhms" or "your motherboard is limiting you" or some other nonsense.

Well, this week I upgraded to a 3700x (the CORES and AVX256 for x265 -10bit encodes are glorious) and an x570 motherboard. Guess what? Ram 3600/16 with tight timings, first try, no problem.

Sometimes you just get a crap part. In my case, the CPU barely even passed spec as a 2600, with a bunk memory controller, and today would probably be re-binned as a 1600 AF or something. Either way, its not always user error, I wish I wouldn't have put so much time into tuning a machine that was never going to have it in the first place. Live and learn I suppose.

Other bummer is I don't have the heart to sell it as is to someone, I honestly doubt it will boot stable with XMP/DOCP on 3200 x16 ram. Works fine enough 100% stock so ill probably take the SSF Dell Optiplex with USB ports packed to the gills with a bunch of easystores I have running as a server in my basement, take this board and CPU, grab some bargin bin green stick ddr4, a lowish end PSU, and a cheap case with a ton HDD bays and make this my new server.... still... bummer.

Edit: here is a pic of the machine now :)

Edit2: also, not bios problems. Tried updating my bios a few times, as recently as September of last year, didn't help.

    Monitor Upgrade Help!

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 07:29 AM PST

I am looking to upgrade my monitor. I am currently using some basic 21inch 60hz monitor. Which is crazy i know lol.

Anyway. I am looking into the following:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/product/2Gm323/msi-optix-mag271cqr-270-2560x1440-144-hz-monitor-optix-mag271cqr

I was just wondering if this is a good monitor for the price? And if not what would you suggest for a 1440p 144hz 27inch curved monitor for around $350 USD or less. It will be around another month or so before i upgrade. So I will be watching for deals between now and then aswell

    Thank you in advance!

Can anybody who's more hardware savvy than I am check my build out?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 07:23 AM PST

This is my first time dabbling in building my own PC. I've made a list of parts, and I'd appreciate the feedback and maybe any advice you could give me?

I'm looking for a mid range PC, I really just play league of legends and stream. Nothing too heavy, but I want it to be able to tackle that easily, and not tax itself if I get ambitious and start to casually play something heavier on the system.

If i was to build a PC that in mounted to a flat board with everything flat so that it could fit, say flat against a wall behind a monitor, are there any tips or info on the best way to carry out this task?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 02:07 PM PST

    My pc specs are as follows: ryzen 5 2600x (wraith spire cooler)-->gigabyte b450m ds3h wifi cf-->cruicial ballistix 2x8 3200-->nvidia gtx970 (upgrading to ~5700 xt or 2070/s when doing this)-->500 gb crucial ssd-->evga 650gq.

Question 1: I know I need a pcie riser for the graphics card but how the heck do I mount it flat to a board, there seems to be no mounting locations?

Question 2: How big of a deal would all in one/custom loop cooling be here? I figured airflow might be strange so a larger reservoir and a big radiator or perhaps an aio cpu cooler and an aio gpu? Or would plain fans work well with maybe a fan on either side to keep air moving across the board.

Question 3: I would want to hide all the wires *inside* the board, how much space do I need? Like 1/2 inch? 2 inches? Maybe embed the radiators into it and make it slightly thicker?

Question 4: This would be a totally new design (I think) designed for LANs/travel. anything that may help stability/durability?

Question 5: What should the board be made out of? Do I need to worry about grounds or anything if I used a plastic/wood board?

So I finally built it...now what?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 10:32 AM PST

For what seems like years I have lurked on this subreddit waiting for a chance to build my PC. Then seemingly out of nowhere my wife bought me a GPU to set me along the path. I spent hours picking my parts, reading reviews and comparing specs. I communed with the Canucks of Hardware and took JayzTwoCents. I found myself at the alter of Tech Jesus and prayed for guidance. Now I stand at the mountain top with my first completed and working build and I ask all of you "Now What"?

How do you guys monitor your system to ensure it is running well? What benchmark tests can I run to see that my computer is performing how it should? Settings I should tweak? Any other suggestions would be appreciated

My FPS doesn't seem to be as high as I would expect...

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 01:31 PM PST

    CPU: Ryzen 5 2600
    Motherboard: B450 Tomahawk
    GPU: EVGA 1660 Super
    RAM: G.Skill DDR4 3600 CL 18 (running at 3200 CL16) Monitor: HP 23es(60Hz)

I'm playing some non-GPU heavy games at max settings and getting FPS below what I'd expect. I'm using the Steam FPS counter for most game and in game ones for others. Some games make me have a max FPS which wont go higher than 60 (I'm assuming it's because my monitor is maxed at 60Hz). In the Nvidia control panel I can't set my display above 60Hz, assuming because of my display.

Planet Coaster- Was sitting steady at 60fps for a couple weeks, just reopened it before this post and it fluctuated between 80-30. I'm not sure what settings I may have changed.

    Minecraft- 70-110fps.

Fortnite- 60 consistently but when I took the limiter off the FPS counter spazzed out at 120, moving quickly between like 118-121.

Cities Skylines- 60fps consistently, I'm not sure if there's a frames limiter on there.

CS:GO- 150+ I don't see any issue with this, but why is this so much higher that other games?

I made a previous post asking if the occasional drops from 60 to 50-58 was a result of a frames limiter, or if that means without the limiter I would see drops to 50. I was basically told that even with a frame limiter, my PC shouldn't drop below 60 on those settings.

I changed settings in the BIOS to make my boot/load times faster. I changed a PCIe setting to x4 for my M.2 slot. I don't think that would interfere with my GPU by using the same lanes or anything. I looked pretty hard and never found an answer to the lane sharing issue. (This is my first build, sorry if what I said made no sense, I think I understand it but could be completely wrong.)

I'm not entirely worried since I have a 60Hz monitor, but I'd like to upgrade that soon. However, I don't see the point if I'm not getting good FPS in games like this. What could be the problem? These numbers don't make much sense to me.

System takes overly long time to display windows loading screen

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 04:39 AM PST

Hi. I recently built a PC and was happy to see that it booted.

    Specs:

    MOBO: MSI x570 a-pro

    CPU: Ryzen 3600

    GPU: MSI Mech Radeon 5700XT

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB DDR4@3600MHz

My trouble is that every time I restart the PC it takes a very long time to come to the windows loading screen with the motherboard 'Pro series' logo. I know that it is not the monitor because when I turn it off/unplug it and turn it back on it immediately recognizes the computer and displays the screen and I don't think its the GPU because it was having the same issue when I tried my old 1050ti. Some of the troubleshooting lights of the MOBO come on when I turn it on and they all go away withing 30 seconds (flashing from CPU issue, to 'VGA' issue to RAM issue to BOOT issue).

I'm very new to PC building (and just made a Reddit lol) and before this computer, I had only ever installed a CPU AIO cooler so I have never had to troubleshoot (what I'm pretty sure is) a MOBO problem.

Other than that the PC is working great and games look even better with the new card+CPU.

If anyone who has even a bit more knowledge than me on this could take some of their time out of their day to help me with this I'd be overjoyed.

    Thanks for reading!

Should I upgrade monitor or GPU first?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 06:11 AM PST

    Current Monitor: AOC G2260VWQ6 which is a 22" 1080p 75hz monitor

Current GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB

So I was thinking about upgrading to a 1080p 144hz monitor (in which case my current monitor would be used as my secondary monitor) but i'm not sure if my 1060 6bg can handle it.

Do I have to upgrade my GPU first?

Should I upgrade the stock cooler to aio and increase number of case fans?

Pros and cons or this? I have money lying around and this is what I could think of.

Which CPU should I upgrade to?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 01:45 PM PST

Hi everyone, currently upgraded my system with a new GPU (RX 5700 XT), I need to upgrade my CPU as well, though.

    I was thinking of either the R5 3600, the R5 3600x, or the R7 3700x.

Is the R7 3700x worth it's price for gaming and occasional recording/editing? Thank you for feedback.

Budget productivity/gaming PC - Anyone with AMD hardware knowledge that could check my build out?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 12:11 PM PST

Hi there this my first post on this sub. It has been a while since I build a custom PC. I've made a list of parts (the 2 sata SSD's are for reference, ignore those). I'll be using it for editing / animation work and a little bit of gaming.

    List: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/H8YXn7

There might be some compatibility issues that I'm not aware of. I'd appreciate the feedback and advice.

I also found this on a forum. With this adapter, will I be able to connect USB C front I/O to my motherboard USB header? https://www.amazon.com/Socket-Header-Extension-Adapter-Motherboard/dp/B07PBYLFN5/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2DHPGLKHXM48R&keywords=usb%203.1%20front%20panel%20header%20to%20usb%203.0&qid=1559090426&s=gateway&sprefix=usb%203.1%20fron,aps,156&sr=8-3&tag=linus21-20

What would you use to power this monster?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 01:25 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

I'm new there, english is not my main language so please be nice :)

I'm a big Corsair fan and actually building a new monster... With those components which I buy second-hand :
    - Asus Z390-E motherboard
    - Intel core i9-9900k CPU
    - Corsair H115i watercooling
    - Corsair 780T white case- Nvidia GPU... 2060 or upper... I'll see but no SLI because, for me, it's useless...
    - Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 3600 Mhz memory 2x8 GB

So now you're wondering "what about the power supply?"... I previously owned a VS350 which, although mounted with a Nvidia 1060 graphics card, wasn't very noisy and, as I'm looking for quality products, which is why I appreciate the Corsair brand, I was about to buy a Corsair HX750i power supply, interesting because of its software management.

After some research, I realized that the AX series power supplies offered the same thing but with a better "80 plus" grade but that many complained about their noise but also about failures like this user: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/48s2m5/discussion_the_corsair_ax760i_psu_and_why_you/

So my question is simple: Are there really recurring problems with AX series power supplies? If so, I suppose you would advise me to buy an HX750i or HX850i?

Thank you in advance for your advice! :)

    This is ridiculous

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 11:47 AM PST

I got a new case and fans that was supposed to be cheap but much better than my current one & on the website for the case (EG Caesium ATX) it clearly said that it used 140mm fans so the fans I got were 140mm (Corsair SP140 RGB Pro) but the case came & turned out it only supported 120mm which made me really mad. So I had to go out & get a new case (Corsair 88R) which said it was meant for 120mm but everywhere I looked people said you could replace the 2x 120mm slots on the front & top with a 140mm fan each but not the back but I've now got the case & yet again I don't see how the hell you're supposed to adds 140mm fans. I feel like all the money spent on the 2 cases & fans have just went completely down the drain. Does anybody have a clue how I can use 140mm fans on either of these cases??

New potential build! Gonna pull the trigger soon.

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 01:20 PM PST

Hi Reddit, this will be my 3rd pc build. I've been putting together and sitting on these parts for a couple of weeks now and would like to get some feedback before I pull the trigger. Note that I already own the 2 Western Digital HDDs and the optical drive, but wanted to list them in the build.

This will primarily be used for office work and some light gaming.

I would also love suggestions on good monitors/mice/keyboards, though I'm contemplating just sticking with what I have regarding peripherals.

    Thanks for taking a look.

Added some fast Dram now my memory clock speed is limited to 1066

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 06:08 AM PST

    Specs

    Mobo 990FXA-UD5 motherboard

    I have two sticks of corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 2000 Mhz CL9

I had them running at 1866 with a multiplier

Then I added some HyperX Fury Black 8GB 1866MHz DDR3 CL10 DIMM Memory and the speed is stuck at 1072Mhz approx after the doubling.

    (North Bridge frequency 2209 approx)

Any ideas about how to solve this? Thanks.

Upgrade from I5 to Intel Core i7-9700K?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 03:21 PM PST

I have had my current PC for at least 3 years with the CPU being an I5 7500 paired with a 1070. Playing on 1080p I have had no issues whatsoever but ever since I have made the jump to 1440p, it has been more than playable but some games I have had issues. Modern Warefare stresses my CPU out where I am lagging in the menus and my PC slows to a crawl too when in the menus. Red Dead 2 hitching issues, stuttering in the fallen order, so on and so forth. apparently due to the 4 core 4 thread nature of my CPU.

So I was wondering if the jump from an I5 7500 to an I7-9700k is worth it at this moment in time, and if paired with a 1070, will give me a sufficient gaming experience at 1440p and get rid of the various issues with many games or if there are any other options. Intel please.

Edit: I am aware I need a new motherboard and a cooler if I was to get the 9700k
