This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

    GPU Backplate

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 08:39 AM PST

Just wanted to give a little LPT for people who might want to make a backplate for their gpu.

I ended up going to Lowe's (my local hardware store) to buy a sheet of acrylic glass to use. The sheet was 12x8 and it cost me $3. On top of that Lowes offers to cut the glass for you for free to your exact dimmensions.

I was a little worried Just having a clear piece of glass in there might look kinda bad, but I have some rgb lights in my case as well and the way the light is reflected and refracted off the clear glass it actually looks really good in my opinion. Let me know if you want some pics I'll figure out a way to to upload them.

Anyways really happy that I could get a fully functional backplate for $3 and a couple pieces of double sided tape.

Edit: I posted some photos of how it looks inside the case. http://imgur.com/gallery/K0Vrr0j

I mainly did this because I have an aio and if the pump failed or there was a leak the water would fall onto the acrylic backplate rather than directly onto the PCB.

Some people asked how my thermals were after putting it on. They were the exact same it doesnt do anything to help with thermals but it doesnt hurt them either so that was nice to see.

I attached the "backplate" using some double sided tape I already had at my house. I put one small piece in each of the 4 corners and did my best to try and not have any piece of tape contacting one of the soldered on parts on the pcb. My gpu had 4 screws in each corner so I just put the tape on top of those screws and rested the glass on that.

Edit 2: You can see in the pictures theres a couple millimeters between the glass and the gpu pcb. Putting the tape on the slightly elevated screws in the corners allowed the majority of the glass to not be contacting the pcb itself.

Here is the "Dark Side" of my life.

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 10:03 AM PST

Questions were asked, decisions were made and problems solved.

At the beginning of 2019, I started to build my computer, now I feel like it's over and enough for now.

My aim was just performance, no RGB, no fancy looking style, no colourfull effects. I just added single Phanteks Neon RGB.(maybe remove it later) I just wanted to reflect my emotions with the darkness, and here it is.

Thank you my family, my friend, my buddy, thank you all who participated to solve my problems.

Anyone else experiencing this issue on PCPartPicker?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 06:54 AM PST

Seems there are no prices, for any part, in the whole website. Some kind of error or something?

No matter what I go under (CPU, MOBO, RAM, etc) there isn't a single price listed on ANYTHING

Edit: Okay, seems the issue is resolved, prices are back on parts now. That was weird! Appreciate the replies, everyone, good to know I wasn't the only one

    First-time PC build - 1440p 144Hz

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 12:36 PM PST

I have been a lurking and finally hit the threshold to work on building my PC. Never built one before, so bear with me!

    Intended use

    • Gaming
    • Work — Most rigorous is occasional leisure photo editing & statistical computation

    Gaming performance & settings

    • Ideally, able to hit 1440p 144Hz for games like Apex Legends or Overwatch
      • I am coming from an XPS 9550, so I have low standards (getting < 30 fps on average in Apex currently)
    • Not picky on settings - would be nice to be able to do high settings for a change, though

    Budget

USD ~$2500 with some flexibility; closer to $2,000 would be nice, but I have been saving for years now and do not mind spending if I need to. I have peripherals (keyboard, headset, mouse). Hoping to keep future-proofed for a few years. I presume that next upgrade may be in a few years for 4K gaming.

    Questions/Thoughts

    • Was debating between 2080 versus 2080 super. It looks like the 2080 just went on rebate, so that makes me favor 2080 since there's only a roughly 10% increase to super?
    • Upgrading CPU - I feel that I would upgrade GPU before CPU, but I am open to upgrading both if people would feel that it would be beneficial
    • Monitor - I was looking for G-Sync compatible IPS monitors - this one comes with 1ms refresh rate, which seems much faster than other versions. I could cut money by getting the FreeSync version (that is G-Sync compatible), but I don't know how much this would affect performance

    Updated Build Summary:

    • Going to stick with 2080 I think. 2080 Super does not seem worth it for almost $200 more dollars. Will hopefully snag this 2080 later since it just went on sale today.
    • Took many of u/lolilolipoli's suggestions - TYVM!
    • Swapped to Ryzen 3700X
    • Great deal on Acer monitor - had been looking at it but didn't realize price dropped so much. Thanks u/n00bpwnerer

    Questions:

    • Should I get CPU cooler? I know that Ryzen's come with one in case. I am not particularly interested in overclocking if I'm hitting good parameters, but as I get more comfortable, may want to try it. I know that I'll be GPU limited, but it seems like it might push out a few more frames.
    • Updated the RAM to more recent versions. Thoughts on 16GB v 32GB?

Is a GPU upgrade from Asus gtx 690 to 1080ti or above worth it?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 11:28 AM PST

Running a relatively old PC I built years ago, and would like to see if upgrading the GPU alone would show improvement without further upgrades? And at what point would the increased GPU be bottlenecked by the CPU or am I already there?

Asus p8-z77-V deluxe with i5-3570k overclocked with AIO waterblock 32gb of Mushkin ram (can't recall model or frequency, think 1600 c7) Asus 690 gpu Samsung 860 Evo SSD. I believe the PSU was a 1200 watt bronze since the GPU had a higher TDP (ran 2x 680s in SLI before the 690)

How does 3200 mhz rams are better utilized for Amd CPUs rather than Intel CPUs?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 08:09 AM PST

I've seen a lot about people recommending at least 3200 mhz ram when using Ryzen CPUs and how it can fully utilize it's performance overall. How is that so compared to Intel CPUs? Is the margin of performance return not that worth it with Intel? What's the recommended ram specs for Intel then?

For mostly gaming, with some media, and browsing stuff.

Going to be playing at 1080p, games like fortnite, cod, pubg, league, etc. Looking for a stable 144fps.

I want to avoid AMD just because of trouble I've had with my previous build.

My First Build. Can’t recommend white cases enough

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 11:13 AM PST

Pcpartpicker list. $1100 build, AMD 3600, RTX 2060 Super. Any concerns or suggestions?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 11:09 AM PST

I don't want to bring the price up much anymore so the AMD 3600x or any other big changes I'm not willing to make. Are there any issues that you all see such as an incompatibility or a part that you think could be better for the same price? I will upgrade other parts such as the SSD and such if there is a legitimate reason to do so.

    Ryzen CPU stuck to cooler

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 12:16 AM PST

Hey all, as the title says my CPU cooler is stuck to my CPU, it is the stock cooler and paste from about 2 years ago. I cannot boot up the PC to try and warm to cpu up. I have tried using a hair dryer to warm up the thermal compound and fishing line to try and pull between the cooler and CPU. As it's still attached to the motherboard do you think it would be a good idea to remove the CPU and cooler as one unit from the mobo and then try and separate them? Any other tips would be appreciated.

Is it just a clock speed tweak? RX 5700 vs 5700 XT

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 01:49 PM PST

I'm wanting to upgrade to another AMD card (current is an RX 570 8GB) so I've been looking around online to see what the difference is between an RX 5700 and an RX 5700 XT (aside from the speed difference). I haven't had any luck except for one video randomly mentioning that the silicone might be better.

Is there a component difference between the two, or is it just a guaranteed clock speed difference?

Benchmark score lower after RAM upgrade

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 01:35 PM PST

Hey everyone, hope you're all having a good day. Yesterday I upgraded the RAM in my current gaming build to the Corsair Vegeance RGB Pro 3200Mhz however, upon testing my rig in 3dmark, my score seems to be lower than before. Previously I was running RAM at 2600Mhz. Both RAM kits were 16gb and the only differance as stated was the ram speed, which is now quicker. I have enabled XMP and ensured on windows that my ram is operating at 3200Mhz. My motherboard supports up to 4400Mhz so thats not capping either. Is this normal? Thanks.

Best Ryzen 3600 motherboard for under $300

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 01:14 PM PST

I've had my Aorus Elite WiFi X570 for about a month now and never had a reason to use the mic until last night. Well it doesn't work front or back tried different headsets clearly a defective motherboard. Because of the extended holiday return policies I'm able to exchange it by tm, but I'm on the fence about which card to switch it out for.

First off, I'd prefer a board with 3 pin argb headers. Second, I'd prefer WiFi, but it's not a must if the functionality (within practical reason) of another board outweighs it. Third, I'd probably prefer a brand like ASUS and MSI that has better RGB software, drivers, utilities, etc. 3600mhz memory oc compatibility is a must. I'd also prefer a board that'll have a longer upgrade path (I imagine b450 is near the end of its life cycle).

I'd like a good sound card. I'm current using Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 Speakers and obviously want reliable mic and audio in jacks after my last mishap. Everybody is saying that the ASUS Tuf isn't worth it. I read that MSI and pretty much every other brand has bad RGB software. I've been told that ASUS aura sucks the least with MSI coming in second and tbh I never had that much of an issue with Gigabyte's Fusion which is notorious for being terrible.

Also need a regular ATX sized board and it would be nice to have a chipset fan that won't be blocked by long video cards (up to a possible 13-14" long, 2" thick). Seems like all the X570s however have their fans right in the center of that area, so that might be an unrealistic expectation.

Is a 500gb SSD good enough for casual gaming?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 02:55 PM PST

I'm building a budget gaming pc for causal games and mostly causal fighters. I mostly play games like Minecraft, Borderlands, Left 4 Dead 1 & 2, Garry's mod and CS-GO and fighters like fightcade and Mugen.

I do plan on upgrading to a Hard drive later for some new Triple A titles I want but is this satisfactory for now?

Concerned about CPU temps under heavy load

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 02:42 PM PST

Edit: will look into aftermarket coolers to keep max temp down under heavy load during video encoding, 94C could be damaging to CPU

Ryzen 5 2600 @ 3,85 ghz with stock cooler (+ the case has 1 intake and 1 exhaust fan)

When playing games all is fine and well, temps are never higher than 75C per HWMonitor. However, when I encode video in Handbrake I see temps up to 94C during most of the encoding. Of course, I know video encoding is super heavy for CPU, it uses almost 100% on all cores, but should I be concerned about those temps? Say I want to encode videos for 1 hour?

Thanks in advance to anyone who reads and especially those who responds, you are all saints and angels in my eyes.
