HDMI has a lot of special features. Which ones can or can not be used by PCs, and why?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 12:32 PM PST

There is a list of HDMI features here. Information on this seems to be very hard to find, and I'm not even sure if the limitations are in the graphics card hardware/firmware, the OS, or the graphics drivers.

I'm especially interested in the following:

    • auto lip-sync: IIRC it would imply that the output device tells the PC that image processing causes a certain amount of lag, and the playback software on the PC would need to apply this delay to the sound output. By my own experience, this feature doesn't seem to work.
    • auto low latency mode: Seems to be just a bit that the PC would need to set when running a game. I think there is the additional problem that the OS has no reliable way to tell if a program is a game or not. It would be nice to be able to manually toggle this, at least.
    • audio return channel: This would allow getting multi channel sound input from a TV to the PC, at least with eARC. Not supported by anything on the PC side as far as I know. This would be very very useful to me, that way I could use any headphone surround virtualization software I want, no matter where the TV gets the sound input from. For example I could use the Netflix client of the TV because the Windows Netflix client is a PITA, and still have access to all the sound channels via the PC. Could also be useful for processing the audio that comes out of a game console.
    • Consumer Electronics Control (CEC): Theoretically would allow the playback software to be controlled by the TV remote.

Impact of AI Hardware by Top Companies

    Posted: 15 Jan 2020 01:24 AM PST

Leading hardware manufacturers such as Intel Corporation and Nvidia Corporation are competing with each other in the market. Intel has introduced its Nervana product line NNP-T1000 and NNP-I1000 in the year 2019. This processor was designed to compete with Nvidia's NVDLA and Google's TPU. In April 2019, Intel has announced its investment on 14 AI startups. The company has invested around US$ 117 Mn in total in hardware companies such as Untether AI, Zhuhai Eeasy Technology Co. Ltd, and others.

What do you expect/hope hardware will be like in 2030?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 07:34 AM PST

Will we have 64-core-CPU smartphones? Will $100 buy 512GB of RAM and a 10TB SSD? Will 5GHz still be the ceiling for an air-cooled CPU? Will GPUs still come as mainly be sold as discrete graphics cards, rather than chiplets packaged in with the CPU? Will the standard gaming monitor be 8k 240Hz? Will Intel STILL be selling 14nm X-lake chips?
