Whatever happened to SSD caching? eg Intel's SRT Posted: 12 Sep 2021 04:57 PM PDT Intel's Smart Response Technology (SRT) was a big deal in the early-to-mid 2010s. Using a small SSD to act as a cache for a much larger HDD. I had a Z87 system that used a 64GB SSD to cache 2x 4TB HDDs and it seemed to work pretty well from memory. Sure, a little complicated to setup, but a setup-and-forget kind of thing. SRT gave my 8TB Steam library a decent performance increase, without having to move games from HDD to SSD to play, then move them back to HDD when finished, and move the next game to SSD etc., something I find myself doing today, 8 years later. I've seen current high-end NASes, mostly with 10Gb/s NICs, with M.2 SSD caching but the tech has mostly vanished from new PCs. I think 2014's Z97 chipset was the last to include it in BIOS. Apple seems to have used something similar with it in their Fusion drives from 2012 - present. So why has SSD caching of HDDs fallen out of favour in modern Windows PCs? [link] [comments] |
