    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Serious question: Are graphics cards likely to come down to list prices (or near) ever again?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 06:34 AM PDT

My GTX1060 has finally died after 5 years. We abused this little beauty, and she gave her all.

I've been looking at replacements. Bearing in mind she cost £250 five years ago I expected to pay around £350 for a replacement? List price certainly is around that figure - but try to find a RTX3060 for less than £500. It's crazy!

Will these prices ever settle down? Should I wait?

EDIT: Holy crap... 426 comments?! It'll take me a while to read them all - thank you everyone for your responses!

Is changing a wraith stealth for a wraith prism (43$) worth it?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 07:07 AM PDT

I've been using the stock AMD heatsink for my R5 2600 for about a 10 months now, my temps are... ok, but I wanna overclock even just a little, and a friend of mine is offering me his old (2nd gen I think) wraith prism, is it worth it? Or should I just look for another heatsink?

Will a Ryzen 7 5700G iGPU handle 4k video editing?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 12:51 PM PDT

The question as in the title, I've been building a PC a few months ago, with a Ryzen 5 3600 paired with an RTX 2060. Don't ask me how much I paid for the GPU, the answer is too much. The card turned out to be damaged and had to be repaired already, but I'll send it back again as the repair didn't fix the situation one bit, therefore receiving back all the money I paid. Now the situation is awkward, since there have been some changes in my life and I decided to go for a 4k monitor to edit 4k footage on, as well as do some casual gaming on Google Stadia, in 4k as well of course. Now my question is, would the Ryzen 7 5700G be enough of a unit to handle that kind of work, and handle it at least at an "acceptable" level, until, say, GPU prices go down somewhere in the next 2 years? I'm talking editing 4k footage in programs like Sony Vegas/DaVinci Resolve/Premiere Pro. Can be at half the quality preview, I don't mind that at all, and I don't want to do any heavy amazing 3D effects as well, just stuff like cutting the footage, speeding up, motion tracking... that kind of thing. Any help is appreciated!

Bought the 'wrong' SSD, what can I do?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 06:26 AM PDT

Hiya! So I've been using a mechanical hard drive for a few years and I'd saved up some money to buy myself an SSD as an upgrade for uni - I was of the assumption that my motherboard wasn't new enough to have an M.2 slot for an NVME ssd, so I decided to get a SATA SSD. It was only when I got home from the store and actually opened up my PC (yes I know I should have double-checked) that I noticed an M.2 slot next to the SATA slot. Don't get me wrong, my new SATA SSD is a noticeable improvement over my old hard drive, but I'm left thinking what kind of performance I'm missing out on. The store I bought from doesn't do refunds for storage, so I'm unsure of what I should do. Sell this SSD* at a loss and get an M.2 SSD, or is my SSD fine for now?

*the SSD cost £90 for 960GB, I'm not sure how much of the cost I could recoup

    thx in advance cuties <3

Send Help, I bought PC parts without a GPU! (P.S. I'm not soliciting free parts)

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 01:23 PM PDT

I am a long time lurker in the custom pc world and have just recently started working toward my new rig. after moths of saving I have finally acquired most of my components. Unfortunately to my dismay I have discovered that the Ryzen 7 5800x will not work without dedicated graphics. I would like to know two things:

    1. Are there GPUs made specifically for AMD CPUs and Intel CPUs or are they the same.
    2. What is a good < $150 GPU option to start with until I can acquire a 3070 like I planned.

If this helps or you are just interested here are my specs so far:

    • AMD Ryzen 7 5800x
    • MSI MPG x570 Gaming edge Wi-Fi (I know this MOBO isn't the best I plan on upgrading it when the situation presents itself.)
    • G.Skill TridentZ DDR4 2x16 3200 Ram
    • Inland 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD
    • Corsair iCUE H100i RGB PRO XT Cooler
    • Corsair RM750 ATX Power Supply
    • Corsair 220T RGB Case

Please leave links to card and if you leave a comment I thank you and Good day.

    What could this be?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 01:22 PM PDT

I was on the desktop where my pc decided to just freeze for around 5 seconds i couldnt click anything or do anything but my mouse was moving extremely normal and after those 5 or 4 seconds it was completely fine again , tried playing a game to see if it would freeze and nope its fine. It only happened this time too this never happened before (i did change gpu's tho about 2 weeks ago) and my new gpu doesnt hover over 68C under 100% load. What could this be? Worried.

PC keeps hard freezing where I have to manually power it off via power button.

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 04:03 AM PDT

Hey! My problem as stated above, is freezes when I'm either playing games or just idle on the desktop. All my drivers are up to date I have a OC on my gpu, I ran OCCT for an hour and heaven for 1 hour not stability issues. I checked memory no issues there either.

There was one time I booted and it said it couldn't find a bootable drive. Put me into bios but I just restarted and booted to os just fine. I'm suspecting a failing drive which would be my nvme m.2.

PC Specs: CPU 5600x GPU RTX 2060 XX ultra RAM 2x8 Corsair 3200 rgb DRIVES 250gb Samsung 970 m.2 (OS drive) Crucial mx500 1tb PSU Corsair RM 750 gold

Edit: Forgot to mention it recently started happening , and it doesn't freeze very often. I could have 2-4 hour sessions on my pc with nothing the. Out of no where I freeze. I also checked for any malicious files with Malwarebytes premium.

Edit 2: so apparently Malwarebytes didn't detect the most horrific and deadly virus…. Which is NZXT cam
I read another post saying how their and builds freeze when they install nzxt cam. Funny enough my issues started after installing that piece of garbage. I'm going to uninstall it and run my pc idle for a couple hours to see if it actually was CAM (which I'm 99.9% sure it is)

Edit: so far running my pc for 6 hours where it would normally crash…. Nothing CAM was the culprit now I can enjoy games without random freezes :D

GPU only using 50% while gaming

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 10:36 AM PDT

I recently got a Reference RX6700XT from amd.com and wanted to test it out. When I opened up the game and played it for ~1 hour, I noticed that the GPU usage was only around 45-50%. I am using the latest drivers from AMD (21.8.2 at the time of writing), and I have capped the framerate at 144fps. My specs are below:

    CPU: Intel Core i7-10700K

    RAM: 16GB, 3200mhz CL16

    Cooler: NZXT Kraken x53

Motherboard: MSI MPG Z490 Gaming Plus

    PSU: 750W

    GPU: Reference RX6700XT

Help me build a pc $600-$1000

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 01:06 PM PDT

    Basically the title,

I'd like to build a decent pc that can play FPS and for honor at high frame rate. I will be doing light programming/video editing on the side as well. If I can get a relatively similar performance out of the different price ranges then that would be ideal. By the way, I am a total noob and don't know whether this is the right Reddit to hit up. So, I'm sorry for the ignorance.

Trying 4k 120Hz for the first time! Any experience?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 08:05 AM PDT

I just paid (way too much money) for an LG C1 55" OLED screen (120Hz native) as my gaming monitor. It arrives tomorrow.

Yes, I realize it's a TV and OLEDs are prone to burn-in. I'm currenty replacing an LG 9600 55" which is AMAZING except that it's locked at 60Hz. The perfect contrast ratio and low latency, combined with the immersive view made downgrading to a smaller 144Hz or greater monitor just not feasible.

Well, now that HDMI 2.1 is mostly a thing and I finally got my hands on a 3090, I can actually experience 4K 120Hz gaming and can't hold back my excitement :)

That said, is there anyone who has a similar setup and tips on settings required to run at optimal settings?

    Looking for a keyboard (non-mechanical)

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 12:37 PM PDT

So I may accidentally have screwed up and permanently damaged my keyboard, right now I'm using a spare I had lying around that isn't... that great because it has no numpad + the cable is wayyy too short, but at the same time looking for keyboards leaves my head spinning with all the nonsense.

I know more or less what I want, yet I have no idea where to find it. Specifically I'm looking for:

    • Non-mechanical keyboard. I tried them at a hardware store a year ago, and I must say, I really don't like them. Sure, some people swear by them, but for me, they're really not needed and I find them kind of overrated.
    • A numpad; this one isn't a convenience for me, I need this for a few games (mainly Elite: Dangerous and a couple of sim games).
    • No ghosting. Maximum amount of keys at the same time is not a big deal for me, but since I'll be using this keyboard in part for gaming, ghosting inputs are unacceptable.
    • NO BACKLIGHT. My old keyboard had a backlight, just to try it out and I just was mostly left annoyed by how bad the keys looked with it off and trying to not blind my eyes out when I had it turned on.

Does anyone have any good recommendations? Googling keyboards just leaves me with all sorts of gaming keyboards which I'm not looking for at all.

I considered possibly the apple extended keyboard, which seems to have almost all of my needs met, but I can't tell how those things are connected and since it's apple, it'd not suprise me if they killed the USB variant. And yes I know it's overpriced, that's also part of why I'm asking here, so I don't use more money than brains.

how do i find out what's wrong with my build?

i just got around to building my first pc, and i'm confused as to why it isn't turning on :/ my gpu (asus gtx 560 ti) has some led lights that glow green when i turn on the psu, but that's about it. no fans are spinning, the power button isn't working either and i'm pretty sure i plugged everything in correctly. something to note is that when i turn on the psu after a long period of time, the spot where the io shield is produces a little spark. does someone know what's going on? :(

GPU trying to downclock all the time causing performance issues in games

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 09:54 AM PDT

My 3080 started going into this weird power-saving mode sometimes when I start a game, where it will aggressively try to keep the clocks and power as low as possible all the time, causing stutter when it has to adjust them which is all the time. This started happening a few days ago and I don't remember changing anything that might've caused it, I also updated drivers today to the latest ones with "clean install" and it's still happening.

To be clear, it used to do the same thing before to save power as it should when a game is not demanding, but now when it happens it's much more aggressive and actively harms performance whereas before it only dropped clocks when it had enough headroom.

I also tried the "best performance" power mode enabled in system settings if that even does anything for the GPU, and I have to specify the games to "perefer maximum performance" in the control panel to avoid this behavior. However, not even that is a guarantee as even for games with it enabled, it will sometimes start the game and still try to downclock although I think it's a little less aggressive this way.

It also happens if I set up an OC profile in Afterburner, I'll play one game for an hour with normal OC clocks and behavior (no aggressive downclocking unless the scene is really light), then I'll boot up another game later and it will start doing it again for no reason.

It's not a problem with any particular game as it can happen in any of them, and not a matter of temps as the airflow is good with a Lancool 2 Mesh, GPU never going above 60c at 100% while gaming when it's behaving normally. I tried wiping the drivers with DDU and installing the latest one again, still the same thing is happening.

GPU doesn't fit fully into pcie slot

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 01:42 AM PDT

I recently noticed my gpu wasn't fully inserted, and I can't push it in any further as the horizontal expansion slots block me from pushing in anymore on the left side. On the right side of my gpu, a click can be heard and it seems to fit in place, but as for the left side I can't seem to get it fully in. I've also already removed the plastic covering on the gpu pcie, so i'm not sure if this is actually a problem or if this is how the gpu is supposed to be inserted, since my pc boots and is fully usable still. picture

when I mentioned the horizontal expansion slot blocking the gpu from being pushed in further, I meant this, and so if i was to push anymore I would be pushing against the case as the gpu bracket is already touching the case
