Should CPU makers abandon the "lower number is better" for transistor density specs? Posted: 06 Aug 2021 01:17 AM PDT I agree with intel's reasoning for abandoning the 'nm' because nanometers are just marketing BS in a post-fin-fet world, but I don't like intel's implementation instead of saying it's marketing BS and replacing it with a different scale like a "more is better" scale like average transistors per square mm, they just said it's BS marketing and they just replaced it with more BS marketing and kept the "less is better" marketing that they said were BS numbers. They made subjective numbers more subjective instead of replacing it with something less subjective. [link] [comments] |

How is a video decoder implemented on a PC (or cell phone)? Posted: 05 Aug 2021 09:45 AM PDT As much as I know about computers, I don't really know how (or who) decodes video on a modern computer or cell phone? I understand that there are different Codecs (basically, standards and algorithms) available, but I don't understand where they exist, in the OS, in the Video Card (or system), in the GPU, is the GPU code loaded or fixed in ROM? I just don't know. Also, is hardware acceleration specific to a codec or is it more general purpose? Again, I feel so under-educated about this. [link] [comments] |
Why are Thunderbolt PCIe adapters generally unavailable right now? Posted: 05 Aug 2021 01:12 PM PDT Newegg, restrict to shipped by NewEgg and In-Stock: MSI's card is out of stock: There's stuff on ebay and less quality sellers, but why is the stock so limited right now? Did Apple buy all the chips or something? [link] [comments] |
