This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Are b450 motherboard compatible out of the box with ryzen 5000/ G processors

    Posted: 21 Aug 2021 12:56 AM PDT

My motherboard i m planning to purcahse does not have a bios flash thing so i want to know if its compatible

EDIT: In conclusion, motherboards with the "Ryzen 5000 Ready" sticker usually have their bios updated. If u do not see the sticker on the moba box i think it would be safe to update the bios to a version which is supported my the cpu.

Somehow managed to get a FE 3070 TI

    Posted: 21 Aug 2021 08:18 AM PDT

So I've been after a GPU for what feels like forever to upgrade from my ancient 280X. On the recommendation of people on here I joined a telegram group for FE drops in the UK last week and surely enough the next day there was a drop of 3070 ti and 3080 ti at Scan.

I had my heart set on a 3060 ti but in my excitement of seeing any stock at all decided to make up the difference in price by trying to use scan finance with a large deposit. Nearly cried when my application went for referral rather than get an instant decision and assumed my chance had gone.

It's now 8 days later and the finance company just got in touch to say I've been approved, I got in touch with scan to ask what I should do since they're no longer in stock and they said they actually still have them due to cancellations! Ten minutes later and I have a dispatch email and now I'm waiting like a kid at Xmas for DPD in the next 2 days.

If you're after one I would even try getting in touch with scan since they said they do actually have some in stock but the product pages aren't there. They might be reserved for cases like mine but you never know.

After a power surge, my pc would not even start to boot. Bought a new psu, still nothing. Please help

    Posted: 21 Aug 2021 09:24 AM PDT

    Hi!

As indicated below, after a power surge my pc refused to turn on (at all).

I bought a new psu, plugged it in (seemingly correctly), and still nothing at all.

Is it safe to say everything is fried and I may as well buy a new pc? I'm getting pretty frustrated endlessly reconnecting things. My next best guess is that the motherboard isn't working, but I'm afraid to replace that and still not have the issue solved.

Computer restarts when playing games, no blue screen

    Posted: 21 Aug 2021 01:04 PM PDT

Edit: Ran OCCT's power test, CPU gradually rose to 80C before it jumped to 91 and triggered a restart. It's as if the cooler can't keep up or something.

    Here's my build

    Event viewer logs:

    General

    Details

    • Could be an overheating issue. House has been in the low 80s recently cause my AC sucks, wasn't an issue before it was so hot in Florida
    • Could be incompatibility - RAM isn't in QVL for mobo, and I've seen mixed/confusing things about compatibility between the RAM, mobo and CPU when researching this issue

Computer was built December of last year. Works just fine outside of gaming. Used to happen when I first built the computer, but only playing Sekiro. I figured it was the FPS unlock mod cause it hasn't happened since. Started happening again recently in Overwatch and Battlefield 5, which are both CPU intensive games. They run completely fine up until the random restarts. Using Speccy to monitor temps, CPU is usually high 60s low 70s in-game.

Mostly I'd like to know if this is some compatibility issue or something that can be fixed by changing clock settings before I drop a bunch of money on a decent cooler.

At the moment I'm using an XMP that sets my RAM to 3600MHz.

    BIOS Update Needed for 3080TI

    Posted: 21 Aug 2021 12:24 PM PDT

This is a PSA since I had a hard time finding answers when I went looking for them.

I have an Aorus Elite WiFi X570 board I was using a GTX 950 and when I plugged in my new 3080TI it completely bricked the board. The 950 no longer worked and the PC wouldn't post or shutdown.

If this situation happens to you just update the BIOS using Q-flash plus

    Currently have 5600x with 3200 cl16 32gb, looking to switch to 3600 cl16 32gb

This is what I'm looking at. I was thinking cl14 but I could only get 16gb and although I only really game and watch stuff, I kinda like to future proof. I'm AU so options are more limited. Open to advice.

    Motherboard upgrade?

    Posted: 21 Aug 2021 06:10 AM PDT

I have a x470 motherboard that had a ryzen 2700. I recently came into a 5600. My current board does have the Bios to run series 5000 chips, would it be worth it to upgrade to a b550 or x570 for the pci 4 lanes or other benefits? I do have a radeon 6800 as my gpu.

    Building a PC. Thoughts?

    Posted: 21 Aug 2021 12:42 PM PDT

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/LDhtvf

I know this is not the best time to be building a PC, but I really need one as my 6 year old XPS 15 isn't cutting it.

My budget is around 1800, only things I'm really questioning is the CPU and of course, the graphics card. What do you guys think of my picks for these two components? I know I'm paying a high price for the card, but like I said, I'm just looking for something now. I'm more of a middle ground gamer, nothing too crazy.

Anyway, thoughts or recommendations on the build as a whole is appreciated. Thanks

    Monitor won't work

    Posted: 21 Aug 2021 12:22 PM PDT

So I finished building the PC the day before yesterday, and it was working perfectly fine, until I turned it off(for the 4th time after downloading windows) today and now when it turns on the monitor shows that there is no signal, what do I do? Google searches show me a windows 10 second monitor isn't detecting and not my actual issue

Infinite boot loop please help. #troubleshooting

    Posted: 21 Aug 2021 12:02 PM PDT

Yesterday my computer was completely fine but I suspect that windows was updating and we had a power cut during. I tried turning it on but its stuck on windows boot screen. When I try to get it to automatic repair it's just puts it to a black screen. I tried booting off an external hard drive but it just did the same infinite loop. All I can do is get into bios basically and nothing else. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

    B550 vs X570 for 5800X

    Posted: 21 Aug 2021 04:07 AM PDT

Hey guys, I am considering upgrading to a 5800X from my 7700K. I am trying to figure out if I should buy a B550 motherboard or if I need an X570 instead. I am planning to have one M.2 NVME SSD and one GPU. I have played around with some overclocking before, but I am by no means an enthusiast.

I would like WiFi built in to the board as well as USB C.

    Thanks for your help!

Stock cooler or fairly old unused air cooler?

    Posted: 21 Aug 2021 09:25 AM PDT

I recently got a new upgrade kit but I'm having problems with thermals. Currently I'm using the stock cooler that comes with the i7, but I found an old air cooler I bought 3 years ago but never used.

The RPM on the stock cooler is 3000± and on the site for the air cooler the RPM is around 2000±.

The air cooler is an Antec A30 cpu cooler. Would it be better if I use the air cooler or just keep the stock cooler on while waiting for a better air cooler?

I need help with a front panel.

    Posted: 21 Aug 2021 10:55 AM PDT

So I was playing on my pc a few days ago and it suddenly shut down, I thought this was just from my foot moving around the power cable, but it turns out it wasn't. So I took off my H510 front panel to see what was going on. As I put the panel down it shattered. Does anyone know where I can buy a front panel for a Nzxt H510. Thank you!
