    Should I buy a 3060 (non-ti) for $500?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2021 08:50 AM PDT

I've got a buddy who won it in a shuffle. He'll sell it to me for what he paid (including taxes/shipping). Comes out to just short of $500. It's the Zotac version.

I have a 970 2gb. Is it worth the upgrade or is the non-ti really just that bad?

Any idea what to do with broken laptop?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2021 05:38 AM PDT

Hi guys i have a lenovo legion y520. The specs are: - intel core i7 7700HQ with integrated graphics card - Nvidia gtx 1050ti - 256gb ssd - 1tb hdd - My friend dropped it from a chair a couple months ago. The right side of the frame is damaged and 2 of the usb slots are not functioning. The gpu has an error code 43 in device manager. The laptop functioned properly using the integrated graphics and theres no damage to the screen. Any idea on what i should do with the laptop rather than throwing it away? Any suggestions is accepted even stupid ones. LOL thank you all! - Sidenote: - using it as regular laptop will not do because i have my work laptop and the purpose of this laptop is for gaming - repairing the laptop is not worth the price where i live

HP Laptop randomly taking screenshots w/o me knowing

    Posted: 18 Aug 2021 09:54 AM PDT

This is actually creeping the frick out of me. My laptop randomly takes screenshots without me knowing. I would occasionally check the laptop photos and see some screenshots of Google Chrome (occaisonally emails, forms that may have sensitive info)that I do not remember taking. The screen does not flash or anything when the screenshot is being taken. Could it be HP bloatware? (I have attempted to completely remove HP bloatware but I nearly f'ed up Windows in the process) HP Touchpoint Analytics Client always runs in the background. (could that have anything to do with it?) I did an antivirus scan on Malwarebytes and nothing showed up that could possibly be doing that. I remember the laptop doing this since September 2020. What is possibly doing this? Why? Is my information safe? Am I being spied on?

TL;DR : My laptop is randomly taking screenshots w/o me knowing it and I suspect it could be HP bloatware.

    Any replies would be appreciated.

Edit: I'm getting a lot of replies! Thanks for the help!

TUF X570 Gaming Plus WiFi - Sudden stutters in Windows, LAN port stops, Audio static/stops, Storage HDD 100% usage, Reboot doesn't work until completely shutdown and left off for couple of hours. Please Help!

    Posted: 18 Aug 2021 08:24 AM PDT

    Hi Guys,

Have been facing this annoying issue with my system since last Monday. I've built and been using this system for the past 2 years with no issues. Work, Gaming, Etc.

    • M/B: ASUS TUF X570 Gaming Plus WiFi
    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700x (No OC)
    • RAM: GSkill TridentZ Neo 32GB (16x2) @ 3600Mhz (DOCP/XMP)
    • GPU: ASUS Strix GTX 970 DC2OC
    • PSU: Corsair RM750X
    • UPS: APC 1200VA
    • BOOT: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 500GB M.2 NVMe SSD
    • HDD: 1TB WD Black, 4TB Seagate Barracuda, 120GB Samsung 850 Evo SSD
    • AUDIO: Creative X-Fi Fatality Professional

As the title suggests, this issue seems be very random in it's occurrence. And started happening only last week.

I had played some Dota 2 (closed afterwards), watched some YouTube, browsed the net, left it there and hit the bed. (I don't always leave my system on overnight but happens occasionally)

Woke up the next morning and the system had crashed and the orange DRAM LED was flashing. Tried rebooting and it refused to do so.

I took everything apart, dusted the parts, alcohol wiped all the contacts pins for the RAM, GPU and expansion cards. Removed and reseated CPU, applied new paste and cooler.

Shorted CMOS with CLRTC jumper pins. Took out battery and shorted battery socket as well.

Took a good couple of hours but afterwards, when I reassembled everything. It worked and I used the computer for about 8 hours straight with no issues and shut down for the night.

Hoping whatever was causing the issue was fixed, booted up the next morning with no issue and used for a good 4 hours and bam!

    [ISSUE]

LAN port gets disabled, major static coming out of headphones, mouse stuttering intermittently, apps hanging or refusing to close, task manager shows my 1TB WD drive at 100% usage, windows explorer takes time to show any drives.

Forcing a shutdown by holding down power button or reset button, system doesn't go past memory check. (Orange LED) Sometimes it keeps blinking, other times it lights up and goes off. But doesn't allow me into bios.

The only fix I've found so far, is to keep the system off for a good couple of hours and turn it back on. And it boots up into bios, windows and I'm able to use it without any issues until it happens again.

Same symptoms every single time. Only difference is how much time I get to use the PC before it happens. Sometimes it happens within 40-50 mins of use. Sometimes after 4-5 hrs. And there are times I've used the system for a solid 8-9 hrs and shutdown for the night with no issues.

Around 3 times I've checked Windows event viewer and reliability checker that it shows svchost.exe_audiosrv reported an application hang. If the issue was only limited to within windows I would think it's a windows issue. But not being able to reboot back after this happens makes me think it's hardware related as well.

But the inconsistency of the usage time before it happens is what confuses me the most.

    [TRIED FIXES]

    • Update to latest BIOS. (3603)
    • Tried running bios at optimized defaults with no changes. (Memory at 2133Mhz)
    • Tried manually setting RAM timings to match DOCP values.
    • Increased RAM voltage from 1.35v to 1.36/1.38v
    • Disabled Global C-State Control (AMD CBS)
    • Tried different memory slots, 1 stick and both sticks.
    • Uninstalled and reinstalled drivers. (AMD X570 Chipset, Realtek LAN, Nvidia GPU)

    [LONGEST ISSUES with M/B]

    • Motherboard BIOS doesn't retain settings after a cold boot. (This has been happening for a couple of months, updating the BIOS or replacing the battery never fixed it. I've heard this is an issue with x570 boards so I've been working around it by loading off a saved profile based off optimized defaults + fan settings)

    • BIOS updates do not clear saved profiles. (Not sure if it's supposed to, but I always load optimized defaults after an update, reboot and overwrite profile to be safe.)

    • CPU Q-LED is always on. (Has been this way for many months, sometimes it turns off and comes back, sometimes it acts like an HDD LED and blinks frantically and stops. But it has never caused any crashes or slow downs in the system.

I live in Sri Lanka so RMA is not going to be possible without major shipping cost. I would go ahead and buy a new motherboard (most probably a B550) but I just need to make sure the motherboard is the cause and not any of the other components. Unfortunately I don't have spare parts or friends with any to try them out on another system.

If someone else has come across a similar issue, I'd greatly appreciate your advice and support on figuring out what else I could try before running out to buy new parts. With the current shortage of PC components and export taxes the prices seem to have jacked up in stores over here.

My apologies for the long read, I just wanted to explain all the symptoms and fixes I've tried as detailed as possible so it will be easier for you guys to assist me with this.

    Cheers,

    Jon

Is 2.5k a good budget for a fully water-cooled custom loop PC?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2021 02:48 AM PDT

I was thinking, 1k for the gpu, 1.25k for the rest of the components, and 250 for the water-cooling. Is this a good budget or should I increase it? Not willing to go higher than 3k.

P.S this excludes monitor and keyboard.( I have a mouse and headphones)

I found my very first PC parts list... from nearly 10 years ago!

    Posted: 18 Aug 2021 09:17 AM PDT

If anyone was curious about what kind of PCs were people building nearly a decade ago, I figured this would be a nice snapshot of that time. Here is my first PC build ever: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/pJNN This was built around November of 2012 and I think I spent around $700 CAD (~$550 USD).

This was the budget build that everyone was suggesting in r/buildapc at the time, though with the better FX-6300 + 7870 instead of the FX-6200 + 7770.

I wanted to upgrade from my old "gaming" laptop to an actual PC. I was planning on buying the FX-4350, but the sales rep told me to get the more expensive FX-6200 instead because it has more cores and therefore more power. Naive young me at the time went for it because these guys sounded like they knew what they were talking about. Big mistake. However, I learned how to overclock and tune my PC out of necessity because of that CPU.

    Current PC Build: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/hk4sTJ

Both AMD and I have definitely come a long way this past decade!

I think my GPU is bricked... how do I know for sure?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2021 02:23 AM PDT

I built a new PC a couple months ago. Initially I was using my old GTX 1080, but I finally got my hands on a 3090 (gigabyte gaming OC version).

It's been working great for over a month, but today it crashed while I was working, no bluescreen just a full on power out.

I tried to reboot and got a VGA status light on my motherboard. Just to be sure, I tried a second pcie power corrector (in case the splitter somehow wasn't delivering enough). Same thing.

I also tried putting the card in a different computer in case it was a mobo issue, same result. I then put my old 1080 back in, and it booted normally.

The GPU RGB is lighting up partially when I power on, but otherwise it would appear to be dead.

Have I done everything I can? Should I try something else? Or should I go ahead and file a claim?

I checked out the newegg reviews and it seems this is a common problem with this card, that's a shame

    Thanks in advance

really good PC build with bad FPS in game (help please!)

    Posted: 18 Aug 2021 02:38 PM PDT

Hi there! First post, really hoping I can get some help. Finally upgraded my pc about 2 or 3 months ago:

    CPU: Intel i9 10850k

    GPU: AMD RX 6800xt

    Motherboard: ASUS Z490-P

    Ram: 16 gigs of ram

Power Supply: Seasonic FOCUS GM-750, 750W

Started off working very well, 900 frames in agent select and probably about 400 in game, a few weeks ago I started dropping to an average of 150 frames in game and double digit frames while streaming.

Bought an el Gato to take streaming more seriously... tried to install it after I got frame drops while on stream using display capture in OBS, but the 6800xt only has one HDMI so I could not end up using it without running it through my CPU. Abandoned the el gato all together and I'm still stuck with this frame issue and haven't streamed since.

I have no idea what to do after updating BIOS, uninstalling and reinstalling GPU drivers, prioritizing the games in task manager, lowering all in-game settings. My CPU and GPU usage both sit at about 25% during gameplay, so it makes me think they just aren't being utilized all the way. I'd love some help if anyone has any ideas as this is super frustrating.

    11900K vs 5800X vs 5900X CPU Temperatures

    Posted: 18 Aug 2021 05:57 AM PDT

I don't understand how this result is possible: https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-ryzen-7-5800x/20.html. They show Intel vastly performing AMD with a CPU cooler that is very similar to mine (I'm using Noctua NH-U12A). However, when I look at anandtech reviews for AMD and Intel, I see that AMD consumes less power. Why on earth would Intel be running so much cooler for techpowerup?

I've also seen various comments on Reddit that the 12-core 5900X model runs cooler than the 8-core 5800X model with the same TDP. Can anyone comment on this or provide a source? Thank you. My goal for this PC is maintain as much low noise and heat as possible with the best components, while my under-desk case limits space.

POSSIBLE FIX for 5950x Users Getting Random WHEA UNCORRECTABLE ERROR

    Posted: 18 Aug 2021 08:22 AM PDT

POISSIBLE FIX: I was experiencing this very frustrating issue and I just completed my build yesterday. PC would randomly BSOD with a WHEA UNCORRECTABLE ERROR. It was random to where there was no timing to it. It could happen after 10 minutes. 1 minute. 30 minutes. etc.

This is the fix for me - Installed latest chipset drivers and also updated Bios to 3801 (8/12/2021 release date).

    Specs:

x570 ASUS ROG Dark Hero Viii with AMD 5950x

    32 GB GSKill DDR-4 4000Mhz

    Strix 3090

    4TB Samsung QVO SSD

    16TB HDD Exos

    2TB WD Black SN850

When I installed it the system has been stable since. Fingers crossed though....

Another temporary fix is to disable PBO in bios. I haven't done this but other users with the same problem have been able to fix it by doing this. Apparently, the automatic overclocking of the CPU is causing the issue.

    PC troubles

    Posted: 18 Aug 2021 01:15 PM PDT

I have recently moved from NY to CA and I shipped my PC priority mail. Everything in the box seems to have been handled with care. However, my wireless adapter was ripped out of my PCIe slot and removed the entire slot with it. Now whenever I try to boot my PC the cpu fan and RGB lights start then immediately stop. However, my RGB RAM lights back up and remains. Any suggestions on how I should proceed? Thank you all in advance.

    Ryzen 5 3600 vs 5600, RTX 3070 vs RX 6700 XT

    Posted: 18 Aug 2021 01:15 PM PDT

I'm about to pull the trigger on buying parts and I'm deliberating between these options in the title.

For the CPU, I mostly don't know if getting the more expensive option will be that big of a difference in games.

For the GPU, I'm mostly wondering about whether one will be much better than the other, considering I was able to find them for about the same price. I'm leaning RTX 3070 since the better ray tracing sounds nice, but the AMD card has 12 gigs of vram vs the Nvidia card's 8 gigs of vram. Will that make a bigger difference in games? I suppose it depends on the game.

I've been looking at benchmarks (no, not userbenchmark), and I'm leaning ryzen 5 3600 and RTX 3070, but want some input from someone with experience. I'm not going to do a lot of other stuff with it beyond games, from modded skyrim to modern AAA titles to esports and FPS to indie titles like Valheim to the incredibly demanding "Baba is You."

    I will be gaming at 1440p, 144hz.

    Thanks for your input.

    Edit: typos

    PowerSpec G436 ( PowerSpec/Lian Li ATX 205 case)

    Posted: 18 Aug 2021 08:28 AM PDT

    Intel Core i7 10700K 3.8GHz Processor; NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Twin Edge 8GB GDDR6; 32GB DDR4-3200 RAM; 1TB SSD

X53 kraken top mounted exhaust, 2 front intake fans. No overclocking on any componets.

I've recently started to get artifacts after gaming for and hour or two on MSFS2020. 80C with 94C hot spot. I believe the issue to be thermal related.

Any ideas to lower the GPU temps? To start i'm thinking about adjusting gpu fan curves an adding a rear fan. I also need to figure out if my issue is getting cool air in or exhausting more hot air.

After, if the problem still exists adjusting case fan curves and undervolting the card perhaps.

    Buying a gpu in 2021

    Posted: 18 Aug 2021 09:27 AM PDT

Hey guys, I've built my new pc for almost a year now. My gpu is supposed to be an rtx 2080 super but ended up having problems with so I had to return it. I'm planning to upgrade my gpu to finally finish the build and was looking at the 3000 series, specifically the 3070. What is the best course of action? Should I wait till the price lowers down to a reasonable price? But when would that he? Should I buy in used market? I'm currently using my old gtx 1060

    Friendly advice :)

    Posted: 17 Aug 2021 06:49 PM PDT

I feel bad because I see people new to gaming and computer building getting baited or falling for trends, so from my experience this is advice you should consider (if someone here disagrees please lmk in the comments, maybe I'm wrong.) 1. Gaming chairs are horrible unless you're willing to spend a very shiny pretty penny on one, you aren't I highly suggest getting a cushioned office chair of the same price. 2. NZXT cases are terrible choices in terms of performance. I know people like the look and don't get me wrong I do too but from a practical stand point they have horrible temps. 3. If you can avoid it DO NOT build a pc right now with the prices as they are, wait it out and save your money. Once again if you disagree please lmk in the comments, or if you have any additional ideas :)

Cheapest platform with 36(?) pci-e lanes?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2021 01:49 PM PDT

To my current understanding, this combo is not achievable on a mid-range consumer platform. But I am hoping that I missed something so I am asking: What would be the cheapest platform to have all of the following available /running at the same time:

    • A GPU (x16)

    • A M.2 to PCI-e card running 4x NVMe SSDs in RAID 0 (x16)

    • An M.2 SSD for the OS (?)

    • A 10 Gbits lan. Be it on the mobo or on a card (x4)

    • A few SATA ports still available still for SSDs

Is my understanding correct that I need at least 36 PCIe lanes total between CPU and Chipset for this setup as well as all the adequate physical ports of course? Or 34 on a mobo that already has a 10Gbits port?

What If I'd want to use my old GPU as an output for the secondary monitor? Just add x8 ? or x4 would be enough?

Thank you in advance for the information!

I'm building a new budget workstation for web development, anything wrong with this build?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2021 11:14 AM PDT

My boss has given me the chance to build a new PC for work with an undisclosed budget. I'm currently working as a web developer in the UK and need something that can handle a bunch of different frame works and tools; might even do some game dev on it if I get the chance.

Case, hard drive, and graphics card (ASUS GeForce 210 1GB) are being recycled from my current workstation. The 1050ti is coming from my personal gaming rig once I can get my hands on a 3050ti.

Planning on upgrading my PC, need some tips/help!

    Posted: 18 Aug 2021 01:23 PM PDT

Hey! So I'm not the best with computers, I bought my PC Prebuilt 3 years ago. The reason I did that is because I got it pretty cheap. Anyway, I noticed with Cyberpunk 2077 that my PC did not run it very well, I had to play it on low and I only had around 40fps.

I'm planning on getting the new Battlefield and probably a lot of new games that'll release later this year and throughout 2022/2023. What CPU/GPU should I buy that would last another 3 - 4 years?

    Here's my specs:

    GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070

    CPU: Intel Core i5-8600K CPU @ 3.60GHz

    Ram: 32 GB

    Motherboard: HP 8437
