Intending to upgrade GTX 1070 into RTX 3080 Ti. I Have some questions!

    Posted: 17 Aug 2021 04:25 AM PDT

    My spec:

    **I7-7700k

    GTX 1070

    PSU SeaSonic Bronze 620W

    Z270 MSI gaming carbon motherboard

    32 GB RAM TridentZ**

My GTX 1070 has some problems after 2 years, so I now decide to replace it with RTX 3080 Ti. My primary purpose for this rig is to play high quality video games and do mundane office works, no video-making or hardcore rendering. I have a few questions.

What are the requirements for RTX 3080 Ti from Nvidia? Is my spec good enough?

EDIT: Here is my PSU calculation https://imgur.com/gallery/5CW5JpU

EDIT 2: After listening to all of your brilliant suggestions, I decide to go with the Cooler Master MWE GOLD 850 - V2 850W ( 80 Plus Gold/Black/Full Modular), RTX 3080 TI VISION OC 12G, (still looking for 4k screen) but will buy it. I have no intention of wrecking up my whole build just for the new mobo and CPU at the moment, yet.

    4790k owners… it’s time to let go.

    Posted: 17 Aug 2021 10:46 AM PDT

My 4790k has been serving me well for the last 7 years. I intended to upgrade it along with my GPU once the nvidia 3000 series came out last fall…. That didn't happen lol.

In my mind it was still fine and I wouldn't really see much of a difference. It was a line I'd been telling myself for years but I was so wrong.

On a whim I upgraded to a 5600x and some fast DDR4 over the weekend and dear god… I instantly saw a 30% improvement at 1440p, steady 100% GPU usage, and cool temps… CPU pretty much boosts to 4.6ghz all the time when playing a game.

It almost feels like I got a new GPU (currently have a GTX 1080).

1080 ti worth it in 2021?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2021 12:19 PM PDT

Hi all! I currently am running a rx 580 in my main rig and am planning to upgrade my gpu. Where I've been seeing my gpu lack the most is in vr. I've heard nvidia gpu's are better for vr... I've heard the 1080 ti is similar in performance to the 2080. But with the current gpu market a 1080 ti doesn't seem to badly priced. Open to suggestions! Current build specs listed below if interested 😀

    CPU temps while gaming

    Posted: 17 Aug 2021 02:35 PM PDT

    Hey guys!

I know this probably has been asked a lot but I just want to double-check, since different threads have different opinions.

So I've just built my first ever PC with Ryzen 7 3700x on board and I was a bit worried about my gaming temperatures.

A little bit of details: I have OEM CPU with Arctic Cooling Freezer 34 CO cooler. The CPU itself is completely stock and I didn't change anything from the box since I'm quite newby. I'm playing on the 1440p and 144 Hz display.

So, closer to the point. My idle temps are ~35-45° Celsius. However, when I'm playing games (so far I've tried only two: Witcher 3 and Dishonored 2 both set to the full ultra settings) my temps constantly jumps in the range of ~65-75° Celsius with rare few seconds spikes to 80° and super-rare (like few times at all) to 85°.

Are these temps ok for this CPU considering that these games take maximum ~30% of CPU usage? Should I be worried about temperatures in games like Cyberpunk or RDR2 taking into account that they will use more CPU or they are going to stay pretty much the same?

Thank you in advance to everyone who will give their time to my question! Any help very much appreciated!

Thinking about upgrading parts of my pc - but what should I prioritize?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2021 06:23 AM PDT

I recently got a new 1440p 144 Hz monitor, and it triggered the urge to start upgrading my PC as well.

Current setup is; i7 6700K @ stock (cause unstable), GTX 1070, 16 GB RAM @ 2666 MHz (I think, not sure).

I mainly play Escape from Tarkov, which is said to be a CPU-heavy game. Apart from that, I play Rocket League, strategy games like EU4 & Cities skylines, RDR2, and I plan on getting BF2042 once it's out. A bit of a mix, as you can tell. I dabble in music production every once in a while as well.

The problem is I'm still in university, which means I can't justify going batshit crazy on spending.

The options I'm considering is to upgrade my CPU/MB/RAM to something like a Ryzen 5600X or intel equivalent, or buy a new GPU (likely a 3070) once prices go down a little bit more. What upgrade would make the most sense here if any? Any ideas? I'm not really in a rush to do anything really, my PC still gets the job done, but it would be nice to reap the benefits of my new monitor.

    Motherboard Suggestions Needed!

    Posted: 17 Aug 2021 04:18 AM PDT

I am currently in the process of finding parts for my first PC build. Currently I have decided on these parts. Anyone have any recommendations of motherboards that have good VRM's, can handle light-medium GPU overclocking, and only has necessary features. I don't mind RGB on it, but I would like to have at least 3 USB ports.

PC seems to have 0 power at all.

    Hi guys,

I've been building my pc for some hours now, but it seems to have no power at all.

I double checked the CPU power and 24-pin, aswell as the GPU power, but it seems like the PSU is completely dead. Have I forgotten about something that might make it seem like the pc gets no power at all?

Baby build a pc success story

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 05:34 PM PDT

Hey all! I know this is so small, but I wanted to share something I'm super proud of! I've been a long time non-builder on here as I haven't been able to afford parts in this crazy market.

But today, my computer wouldn't turn on all the way - it would cycle between powering on and off after about a second. I was super frustrated! But I thought back to all of the posts I've seen on here about power supply connections being weak. So I took a deep breath, unscrewed the case, and explored my pc for the first time.

I felt like I was doing heart surgery. I started tracing the cables from the PSU to various components, and decided to unplug and replug some of them.

After a few rounds of this, and trying to power it on to see if it would work, it wouldn't and I was starting to think I'd have to take it to a pro to figure out what was really wrong.

But then, I tried one last connection - the psu to the mobo connection - and it worked!!

I know it's so minor compared to some of the stuff you all do - but it felt so cool to me to make it work again!

Thanks for all of the advice you post. I indirectly benefit from it all and I appreciate it!

Intermittent video loss - this machine is sucking my will to live - detailed post

    Posted: 17 Aug 2021 09:15 AM PDT

Full disclosure - I wanted to cross post this with /r/techsupport to get as many eyeballs on it as I could but didn't have the option, so I'm posting it here AND there. So, if you hang out in both places, don't flame me - I'm fragile and in need.

I've got a machine in right now which has me shrugging my shoulders so here's to hoping one of you has a suggestion. This is very long, very detailed post. Since I'm a pro, I already know what information you'll need lol, so all I need now is someone smarter to guide me.

    The build:

    • i7 6700K
    • ASUS Z170-A
    • 16GB DDR4
    • msi R9 390
    • EVGA Supernova nex750G
    • Windows 10 on Samsung 950 pro 1TB (sata not PCIe)
    • 3x 2.5" SSD for game storage

    The issue:

The customer uses this machine for gaming. They brought it to me saying that randomly his two displays would just go black but the machine would continue to run. This problem got progressively worse over time. They claimed that loading some games would cause it to happen straight away, but other games would take a while until it happened.

    My initial diagnosis:

I set the machine up on my test bench and connected it to my test display via DP. Booted up and as I was running some tools to inventory the hardware - display went black. Restarted it and had no video but the machine booted. At this point I removed the GPU and connected my display to the I/O panel's DP port since I have a K-sku chip. Booted up fine with display. Bad GPU right? wrong. Or at least, maybe wrong.

Before rubber-stamping the GPU, I installed it into a test machine and away it booted - with display! Hmm..... Power supply?

Reinstalled the GPU into the customer's machine but connected my own power supply to the GPU. Boots up with display. Tested the output of the customer's power supply to the GPU outputs and got 11.33v, a little low for my liking, so for good measure, and to properly exonerate the GPU, while connected to my power supply, I run Unigine2 SuperPosition on 4k max settings - 30 minutes test... PASSED! So... definitely the power supply right? Wrong. Or at least, maybe wrong.

Reconnected the customer's power supply to the GPU and re-ran the test and guess what? 30 minutes and PASSED. Unreal.

So I've got a good GPU and a good PSU. What else? Well, the customer told me they take this machine with them to work daily(night shift). The GPU was hanging down quite a bit and I finally decided it was a connection problem to the PCIe header. Every time they moved the tower, it jostled the GPU, which in turn made the connection worse which, once heated up, would drop the connection. I'm so smart! Sold the customer a GPU brace and sent them happily on their way.

Then I got a text - same problem happening. WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL.

    Back in the shop:

So I've got the tower and both of the customer's displays as I wanted the full replication. I asked which games would trigger the problem and was told one in particular usually triggers it on load. Connected everything up on the bench, using both of the customer's displays connected to the same GPU ports they use. Fired it up and launched the game. I started out in this little house and everything seemed ok. I walked to the door and opened it. Just as the world started rendering, LIGHTS OUT - displays go dark. Restarted the machine - no video. Thermal camera to the backplane of the GPU shows 100c. I waited until it was down to about 70c and tried again - no video. I removed the GPU and then connected both displays to the mobo I/O ports and restarted. Booted fine, loaded the same game and despite an expectedly poor frame rate, was able to walk around in the world just fine - no problem.

I reinstalled the GPU and ran two stress tests on extreme 4k mode - passes both times.

I'm completely dumfounded and not sure which rock to run over. I have one potential clue that I've yet to decipher.... You know, I did mention I'm a pro right? I mean, what pro would be doing these tests without logging? Yep! I have a log, and while it's a mile long at this point which I'll spare you, there is a TL;DR within it. Remember when I first got the machine back here, loaded that game and it crashed? I caught that on the log. The other interesting thing is that the log stopped there and I'm not sure why because the machine continued running.

Here is the log, right when it crashed. Have a look at those voltage and current numbers.

    Have a look for yourself!

If you made it to here, you're a saint in my book. Send help! or holy water. or something. just. send. something...
