Biggest regrets/mistakes building my first computer

    Posted: 19 Jul 2021 10:49 AM PDT

The big mistakes and regrets I built a few months ago when I finished building my first pc with little knowledge, I just picked out parts for around 5 minutes and find the cheapest parts I can get off Amazon, my lists of regrets contains:

Ryzen 5 3600 (I genuinely could've got a i5 11400F if I had researched more since it was more powerful at a cheaper price. )

120mm AIO, (Ml120) this does not need explanation. I could have just used my stock Ryzen Cooler, this was such an unnecessary part since I could've spent that extra on a GPU.

500w EVGA 80+ Gold PSU, this one is debatable since it's 80+ gold but with a drawback of 500w If I ever plan on upgrading to a better GPU.

Cheap motherboard, I use an Asrock A520m-hdv when I can spend a couple of that AIO money on something like a b460m.

Storage: 240gb WD Green m.2 2TB WD green HDD (this was unnecessary when I could've went for something with 500+ GB Ssd and a 1tb 3.5 drive)

Other than that, I am not ungrateful nor hate my parts, I just wished I went and took more research of what I could've saved that budget on for other parts that would be useful for what I do. I'm grateful for my computer parts just to clear things up. I don't have any much to say other than that.

I accidentally got thermal paste in the CPU socket of my brand new PC... It somehow all worked out.

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 07:30 PM PDT

Pro tip from someone who's not a pro and nearly had a heart attack today due to my sloppiness. Be extra careful when you take off you CPU cooler, clean off thermal paste, and when you apply fresh thermal paste to your CPU... I have no idea how or when a small strand of paste fell into the CPU socket, but when I noticed it I nearly died. I tried my best to clean it off but not all of it came out. Thankfully it was non-conductive and it seems like I managed to clean it well enough to cause no issues to my PC since it runs perfectly fine.

TLDR; I got thermal paste in my CPU socket on my new PC. I got lucky and it was fine.

Is the steam deck better for games than my laptop? I am interested in the 256GB version.

    Posted: 19 Jul 2021 08:43 AM PDT

I like the idea of the portability of the steam deck, and my laptop can handle (mostly) all the games I want to play. But I am thinking from what I have read the steam deck is better performance graphics wise correct? (I cannot run jedi fallen order on high settings for example at anywhere decent frame rate) Just want to make sure. Thanks!

    My Laptop:

System Manufacturer/Model Number: Lenovo ideapad flex 14API 2 in 1

OS: Windows 10 Home x64 Latest version

    CPU: Ryzen 5 3500u

    Motherboard: LENOVO LNVNB161216 (FP5)

    Memory: 12GB DDR4

Graphics Card: AMD Radeon Vega 8 Graphics

    Screen Resolution: 1920 x 1080

Hard Drives: 256 GB Samsung ssd nvme

    VS Steam deck:

    Processor AMD APU

    CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32)

    GPU: 8 RDNA 2 CUs, 1.0-1.6GHz (up to 1.6 TFlops FP32)

    APU power: 4-15W

    RAM 16 GB LPDDR5 on-board RAM (5500 MT/s dual-channel)

Storage 64 GB eMMC (PCIe Gen 2 x1) 256 GB NVMe SSD (PCIe Gen 3 x4) 512 GB high-speed NVMe SSD (PCIe Gen 3 x4)

EDIT: Thanks everyone for your help, def going to continue going through with it. I will keep an eye out for benchmarks going forward, but I think it will be a sweet little system and will prob run games better than my laptop so thanks.

Noticed my CPU fans were blowing the opposite direction to my case airflow, changed fan direction and dropped CPU temps by 10+ degrees...

    Posted: 19 Jul 2021 12:11 PM PDT

so I'd always thought my cpu temps where a little high considering I have an NHD15 cooler but they were always well within safe limits so I never really bothered with it much but i finally decided to take a look, and noticed the fans were blowing the wrong way 🤦‍♂️, changed it around and my idle temps have gone from 45~ ish to as low as 32C.

I feel like an idiot haha.

SSD and HDD size for gaming

    Posted: 19 Jul 2021 10:06 AM PDT

Is 512gb ssd and 1tb hdd not enough, just right, or overkill if I would install 6-7 games? Some of the games might come from this list:

    CoD Warzone

    CP 2077

    GTA 5

    R6 Seige

    RDR2

    AC Valhalla

Do I need an NVME SSD heat sink?

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 05:29 PM PDT

I've seen that most nvme SSD's have heat sinks, so for the hell of it it felt mine (un-sinked) and it was very hot to the touch. Should I get a nvme ssd heatsink?

Edit: Thanks everyone for your feedback! My motherboard didn't my come with a heat sink , nor my NVME drive, so I ended up just grabbing a super cheap and crappy one from eBay. Made sure it had red RGB to auto OC it to increase data transfer speeds!

Stuttering on high-end PC, reaching my wits' end.

    Posted: 19 Jul 2021 09:43 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I've recently been trying to nail down and get rid of this annoying stuttering issue my PC has been having in all games, it's been going on for a few months now and in that time I've:

    • Replaced RAM (used perfectly fine old RAM to test)
    • Replaced GPU (using a different GPU to test as well)
    • Reinstalled Windows around 4 / 5 times.
    • Removed USB 3.0 header
    • Reseated and repasted CPU
    • Reseated CMOS battery
    • Ran memtest for around 12 hours, with no issues found
    • Ensured ALL cables are securely connected, along with unplugging / replugging several times to remove possible corrosion.
    • Ran DDU and uninstalled display drivers, twice
    • Disabled all power management options for CPU in BIOS, including C-states
    • Changed NVIDIA control panel settings such as maximum performance for power, etc.
    • Replaced PSU power cable.
    • Ran software like LatencyMon, Afterburner (w/ RivaTuner) while playing games to try to nail down the error

I've ran out of things to test software / hardware wise. Temps are fine, there are no strange noises or weird smells. Nothing is burnt, broke or hanging off. No loose screws and no contact between case and mobo. The only things I can think of it being is the following:

    • Bad mobo. In my old place my PC suffered around 2 - 3 power cuts over 1.5 years - could this have done something to the mobo? There is very frequent flickering with my Corsair LL fans if I run an intensive profile (like say, the Arc settings on the fans). Perhaps a power delivery issue? This would kind of make sense with the monitoring results I was getting - there'd be a sharp drop in voltage when the stutters occurred.

    • Bad PSU. The stuttering coincides with a loss of voltage as reported by Afterburner's monitoring, but I'm not sure if parts losing voltage is a symptom or the cause.

    • Bad CPU. The worst option. I don't have a spare CPU to test with the current setup, but nothing's really happened to indicate it would be the CPU. It's just on this list because I wasn't able to swap it out and test it.

For clarity's sake, here are my specs:

    • GPU: RTX 3090 FE
    • CPU: i9 9900k
    • RAM: Corsair Vengeance 32GB
    • PSU: Corsair RM850
    • Mobo: Gigabyte AORUS PRO z390 (non-wifi)

Using a noctua NH-D15 as my cooler if that matters, but like I said, I've had no issues with temps.

    Please help :(

EDIT: Quick edit. I was getting some pretty nasty black screens that would force me to restart a few months ago too. One was while loading into a League game, another was using Adobe Premiere. This didn't happen again until recently when I got what looked like a driver crash (black screen, window of currently played game minimised and what looked like an NVIDIA error popped up in the top right, disappeared too quick to get a good look at it). I have a clip of it happening, but you can't see much from it.

What GPU's aren't ugly side up?

    Posted: 19 Jul 2021 09:01 AM PDT

    https://i.imgur.com/OmyEJ7M.jpg

First build. 5600X, MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus, reference 6700XT, 2 sticks of RGB Crucial Ballistix at 3600 (looks like single rank), in a decent looking case (NZXT 710i). I'll be honest, I made at least a few choices for aesthetics. I spent a solid month or two fussing about what parts to buy trying to balance looks and with optimization. The one thing I couldnt possibly anticipiate... why the heck is the GPU ugly side up? A reference 6700x is okay on looks, but the way it's set up the flat & untextured back plate, serial number and bar code are showing.

Got a couple changes I want to make... first being to trade my card to get a GPU that isn't ugly side up or at least vertical mount it. What cards are ugly side down?

Advice on purchase of refurbished monitor

    Posted: 19 Jul 2021 01:55 PM PDT

Hey so i found a deal on a refurbished/slightly used (like amazon warehouse only from different company) MSI Optix MAG274QRFDE-QD for 359 €. Is this a good deal or should i keep my fingers of refurbished monitors? Also if i would by it what things should i check that might be damaged (it is not stated what is wrong with the monitor exactly).

Fyi other monitors such as GIGABYTE M27Q and Dell S2721DGFA cost like 350 € and 390 € respectively.

    Ty for ur advie :)

Computer randomly turns off while playing games; bad graphics card?

    Posted: 19 Jul 2021 01:22 PM PDT

This is my first PC built with the help of my partner.

My computer keeps turning off when loading a game in Dota, or at random times with Cyberpunk. Thus far all signs point to my graphics card (Raedon RX 580, 8gb, 3 fan ASUS ROG-STRIX) and I am open to any suggestions on how to make things work normally again. The card was previously used for cryptomining. There are no error messages, strange sounds, blue screen... just off without warning.

Thus far (with a little help) I have:

    1. updated all drivers
    2. uninstalled and re-installed games
    3. new power supply (750w), cables, surge protector (noted some scorch marks on the prongs)
    4. uninstalled AMD software and ran w/ windows only auto graphics drivers (still crashed); reinstalled AMD software (crashed again)
    5. reworked the BIOs on the graphics card back to factory settings
    6. run various stress tests for graphics and memory w/o any issue

I was able to borrow another graphics card (RX 480) and everything works without issue, which at least sort of isolates the problem. Sadly graphics cards are hard to come by at the moment. Any other suggestions on what to check or how to fix things?

NVIDIA RTX 3060 - Noisy Fans, or something else?

    Posted: 19 Jul 2021 01:49 PM PDT

    Troubleshooting Help:

    What is your parts list?

    • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060
    • AMD Ryzen 7 5800
    • Motherboard: AMD Vermeer B550 WIN DPK
    • Power Supply: 650 Watts (fsp650-70ala)

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

    • Trying to identify humming noise- where it's coming from & what might be causing it. The noise is present at idle, but becomes increasingly noticeable under load.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

    • Adjustments with Afterburner

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

    Video here.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

    • This is a Lenovo pre-built. Ideally, I would like to identify the problem first rather than return the computer or rely on tech support (support has been a headache thus far). Might need headphones to hear the noise. Noise is most noticeable at around 2:40.

    Thanks!

I have been deciding between i9 10850k or i7 11700k. I'm going to be playing Fortnite (cpu heavy I believe) streaming, discord, watching twitch. Nothing to crazy.

I'm more worried about streaming and gaming on one monitor while doing whatever on a another. Which one will give me the best performance for gaming & streaming? (Both are same price)

    Edit: I'll be using a 3070 and a 240hz 1080p monitor

Old PC finally kicked the bucket - time to upgrade

    Posted: 19 Jul 2021 01:35 PM PDT

My old rig that I built in 2013 finally kicked the bucket. It has served me well with no changes except upgrading the GPU and adding a couple small SSDs I got for free. Old build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/g669Mv

I'm looking to upgrade and rebuild within the next couple days. It will mostly be used for gaming, along with some programming/electronics work/etc. Nothing too crazy. Budget is flexible. Any advice is appreciated!

Here's what I've got so far:

    A couple notes/questions:

    • Any suggested changes/issues?

    • I'm currently thinking I'll reuse my old 1080. It's still chugging along just fine for now and I don't really want to pay way over MSRP for a new one right now. I imagine I'll upgrade in the next year or 2.

    • I don't know much about the current state of SSDs. I want a 1TB drive, so I just grabbed the one suggested by the PCPartPicker build guides. Does this one seem okay, or should I get a different one? Or, what should I be looking for when choosing SSD?

    • Also want to get wireless card. Most the time I will be wired, but I want to get wireless so that I have the option. Not sure what to look for for this.

    • Still looking around for a case. I would like to keep my ODD, and I'm realizing that limits my options pretty significantly. I love my old Fractal Designs Define r4 so I'm looking for something somewhat similar (simple design, clean lines, not flashy). Any suggestions?

Tip for PC builders: actually check if the M.2 heatsink on your motherboard is helping or hurting

    Posted: 19 Jul 2021 09:28 AM PDT

I just recently finished a new build in the Ncase M1, and one thing I noticed is how warm my Samsung 980 Pro boot drive was, it would idle at 56C and reach upper 60's just from gaming. Not terrible, but getting close to the 70C throttle point that I looked into ways to improve it.

First I removed the decorative "Gigabyte" block from above the M.2 heatsink, and that already helped, dropping idle to around 52-54C and load to 62-64C.

I decided to remove the heatsink entirely and switch the AIO fans to intake (which was recommended anyway for CPU temps) and now with a bit of ambient air blowing on the open SSD, it idles at 45C and stays in the 50's under load.

Not only was the heatsink not helping, it was actually making things worse. It's just something I think people might want to consider keeping an eye on.

EDIT: Mobo was Gigabyte Z590I Vision D
