TPM itself feels like a bit of a mess

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 12:00 PM PDT

I saw some articles today about not to panic about TPM due to Windows 11. The article said that most pc have some sort of TPM. Forget about Windows 11, TPM itself feels like a mess. I have Enpass password manager and it needs TPM 2.0 to save the master password key or you are forced to enter the master password every time you restart enpass. I have it installed on several machines:

    1. Microsoft Surface PRo - has TPM 1.2, so it doesn't work.
    2. HP Spectre X2 - this has TPM 2.0, but enpass does not work with it. I poked around and Windows Security Processor settings said Attestation and storage does not work. I think this may be due to the firmware, which listed it as Infineon version 5.4. There is a package listed for version 5.7 on the HP website, but when I tried to install it, it said my version was newer.
    3. Dell XPS 8900 - this has Intel PTT, but when I enable it, it shows up as a TPM 2.0 device but then fails with a error code 10. After some experimenting, I realized that Intel PTT just do not work with legacy BIOS. The BIOS itself doesn't display any warning. IN any case, I was able to get PTT to work by converting the disk from MBR to GPT and then changing boot to UEFI. Unfortunately after all that Enpass still doesn't work. This may be due to the software having bug.

I am hoping other people have a nicer experience with their TPM. I am not sure I want to use TPM for bitlocker, I'll be afraid I will be locked out one day.
