/r/Hardware Moderator(s) recruitment + Updates regarding subreddit moderation

    Posted: 06 May 2021 06:15 AM PDT

    Hello all!

First thing first: Our subreddit recently passed 2 million subscribers, and we want to expand our team to accommodate the ever increasing workload of the moderation team.

As you know, /r/hardware is quite strictly moderated compare to other tech-related subreddit of our size, and with another wave of hardware launch in the short-mid term future, we'd like to expand our team of moderators.

If you like to join us, do please fill in the form here.

There are no particular requirements, and experience does not necessarily matter if we think you are nonetheless suitable. After all, I myself was a novice when I joined the team.

The form will be open for 1 week, so it will run until the 13th of May.

Second: Regarding the PC component market / our policy towards it

As everyone should know by now, the DIY market is currently rather chaotic, and especially in the GPU department.

While we understand the frustration of DIY builders, we do also have to remind everyone that /r/hardware is not strictly a DIY-facing subreddit - we panders towards a more "advanced" crowd (for a lack of a better word), and not just gamers.

We've noticed for > half a year now that there had been increasing amount of comments / memes about not being able to buy PC components / or complaining their price are ridiculous - while understandable - is derailing some of the discussion about actual hardware. Therefore we intend to impose a stricter policy towards such discussions:

    1. As per the rules, Memes and low effort comments is not allowed either as a post, or indeed in the comments. If you have nothing substantial to say, say nothing.

    2. Posts regarding component prices / market will be monitored closely - if the post does not contribute much new insight or indeed any new information, it will be removed. The same policy also applies to the comments.

This DOES NOT mean you cannot discuss the hardware market. It just means we want the discussion to be more meaningful and substantial. There are plenty of casual discussion and posts available in other major tech subreddits, and we'd like to maintain /r/hardware's niche of relatively more serious and quality hardware discussion.

If you have any suggestion / opinions to this, do let us know in the comments and we'll read them.

Otherwise, on behalf of the whole moderation team, thank you for participating in /r/hardware. Here is to the road towards 3 million subscribers.

Which memory do smartphone GPUs utilize? Mali/Adreno/Custom apple gpus?

    Posted: 06 May 2021 11:35 PM PDT

I searched on internet and couldn't find much on it. Smartphone gpus ones used in iphones, ipads or android devices - which memory do they use? Do they utilize unified RAM? Or something else?

I know desktop gpus have their own dedicated memory. Integrated gpus inside AMD APUs use unified RAM. I couldn't find much info on smartphone gpu memory. Do they have dedicated memory or use a unified memory which is shared with cpu?
