    Simple Questions - May 09, 2021

    Posted: 09 May 2021 05:00 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

The current state of the PC components market - A message from your mod team

    Posted: 13 Apr 2021 02:06 PM PDT

    Howdy folks,

As you may or may not be aware, the PC component market is reeling from a multitude of factors. Graphics Cards are extremely hard to come by, selling out instantly even at inflated prices and being resold on the second hand market for many times their original retail price. However the issues run deeper than this with a combination of Covid-19, cryptocurrency mining, tariffs, production limitations and other supply and demand factors coinciding to mean that finding graphics cards, CPUs and some other components has become incredibly frustrating.

We all want to build great PCs, and right now it's hard and that sucks.

We ask for your help during these shortages by requesting that you pay mind to the following:

    • We cannot predict when this situation will ease or end. No one has a crystal ball.

    • Don't ask us how to buy a GPU. You can read about others' experiences and see if you can emulate them with the time and skills you have available, but no-one has an easy answer. People are finding GPUs at retail and patience is one of the primary methods that yields rewards.

    • Some people might decide to use bots to assist them in making a purchase. On /r/buildapc, we do not condone the discussion, recommendation or advertisement of bots.

    • Please don't get scammed. This is a fraught market and fraudsters will exploit your desire to buy a GPU. If a product is being sold by a third party below market price in all probability it is bait for a scam. Never send money by bank transfer, Paypal Friends & Family, or strange cash apps you've not heard of until your seller suggests them. Engage in any non-retail transaction with extreme caution. Ensure any payments you make are covered by robust buyer protection. We will not permit topics such as 'Is this a scam?' or 'Did I get scammed?'

    • Do not offer to sell or ask to buy components in this subreddit or via direct message. Posts will be removed and posters banned.

    • Be kind to one another. Some people may choose to pay inflated prices. Other people may mine with their GPUs. Neither of those make abuse or harassment acceptable and we will take action against breaches of our rules concerning civility.

In the meantime there are ways to build a PC now despite the GPU shortage:

You could build a stop-gap system with graphics output integrated into the CPU or search for cheaper older used cards such as the AMD RX480/570/580 or Nvidia GTX 970/1060. Cards with less than 4GB VRAM are no longer optimal for mining and so may be more readily available. There are many possible solutions, and we're sure the buildapc community can help you if you need a PC right now and can't wait for supply to catch up to demand.

To keep the rest of the subreddit on topic, please keep discussion of the GPU shortages, retail frustrations, etc. to this thread only. Other submissions will be removed.

I switched from a GT 1030 to a GTX 1050ti and there's no improvement in performance. Also, the screen now randomly blacks out for a couple of seconds. Drivers are up to date. Any suggestions?

I was able to lower my CPU temps by 20 degrees.

    Posted: 09 May 2021 03:30 AM PDT

    Update from:https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/n36qni/what_cpu_cooler_should_i_buy/

Thankyou to everyone who helped me.

It turns out I hadn't screwed the fan all the way down and there was a very small gap on one of the corners. Which is why I got so much heat, so now I have re fitted the CPU cooler it has dropped form 90-99 under load to 70- 75.

Hi, as the title says, I haven't been able to decide on which case to pick for my first build. The cases that I can't decide between are Lian li o11 dynamic or mini version, Corsair 4000d airflow and Meshify 2 compact. Would appreciate some opinions. Btw; will purchase an aio.

Recommendation: Intel i5-10600K vs. Intel i5-11500

    Posted: 09 May 2021 01:27 PM PDT

    Hi there!

Im currently looking to build a PC and based on my criteria the Intel i5-10600K and Intel i5-11500 seem to be good fits.

    Intel i5-10600k - https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/199311/intel-core-i5-10600k-processor-12m-cache-up-to-4-80-ghz.html

    Intel i5-11500 - https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/212277/intel-core-i5-11500-processor-12m-cache-up-to-4-60-ghz.html

While looking at their specs they seem to be very similar with the exception of overclocking for the 11500. I'm a little stumped as to which one to purchase, any input is appreciated.

use case: general use, web browsing, a little video/image editing, programming, no gaming (at the moment but would like to keep the opportunity there)

    Thanks!

PSU clicking when not under any load, putting under load makes it silent. Corsair HX1000W

    Posted: 09 May 2021 12:53 PM PDT

It's getting to be about 8~ish years, I want to say with it. Give it take one or two years. Corsair HX1000W, and for past few months when its idle/desktop/videos etc the psu will emit a clicking like noise.

Upon loading it and putting it under a game load, it goes dead silent.

No other issues, fan still spins, I didn't see any blockage when dusting it out through the grills.

Bearing going bad? Coils? My PSU knowledge doesn't go that deep. When searching for this answer, most of the problems seem to be people's psu's will click under load, not idle. Mostly the answer to those are coil whine.

The noise is annoying af when its idle, unless you got headphones on. Have no problems replacing, and I am sure a RMA at this many years is out of question, just curious what can be done if any, or what problem is.

    Thanks!

    Motherboard - CPU compatability

Does x570 motherboards work on ryzen 2nd gen?
I want to upgrade my a320m mobo and be able to upgrade my cpu down the line. Thanks for help in advance.

For those who are curious for my system specs:
    Ryzen 5 2600 stock
    Msi A320m pro VH Plus
    16GB (2x8) Hyper X Fury Black CL18
    Asus Dual RTX 2060 SUPER
    1TB WD Blue
    120 GIGABYTE SSD
    Be Quiet 700W 80+ Bronze

Cause to upgrade: Gpu usage around 60% on average and i believe the cause of that is my mobo. Might be cpu bottleneck that's why i need future-proofing with the motherboard upgrade.

    Broken GPU?

    Posted: 09 May 2021 11:48 AM PDT

yesterday my PC turned off without a warning. First I thought it might be overheated or something (it never happened before). After waiting a while it wouldnt turn back on. I disonnected my GPU because i wanted to see if it would boot without it. After trying to turn it back on ,a little bit of smoke came out of my GPU (PCIe cables NOT connected). What can i do now? Exspecially because they are so expansive atm. Thx for any Help :)

would love any feedback or any issues I may have missed as I did just impulse buy most of the items. I'm carrying over my ASUS ROG 34 ultra-wide and ASUS ROG 2080TI OC from my previous build to this one. The main thing I'm concerned about is just the motherboard, 2 10GB ethernet ports is attractive and I do have a UniFi 24 port POE 10 GB switch already. I've been hearing good & bad things I mostly just want a board with a lot of PCIe lanes and the Gigabyte comes with a x16 expansion that I can dump 4 NVMe's into. Overall is this a sufficient build? Primary goal is for Overclocking + Gaming + Work (work will cover 30% of the cost).

PS: I know most will say "why don't you go with a AMD board and Thread ripper CPU if you want all the lanes" and to that I say fair point! However, if I want my work to cover the 30% I was told to use Intel.

    Thanks!

What is the problem? I looked into reddit and find out that there is a post about last problem, but what about first one, how can i solve it? It is RAM/GPU/CPU problem, if it is why i don't get any problem when lauch tests? PSU? https://outervision.com/b/87bw2w all PSU calculator says that my PSU is good enough, and OEM of my PSU is Seasonic with good components. In the wiring of the apartment there are no problems, everything works perfectrly. Only the PC, monitor, and modem are connected to the wall outlet.

If there any ready solutions, can you leave a link to it.

    Nzxt RGB and 9 fans

    Posted: 09 May 2021 01:22 PM PDT

What's the best way to connect 9 of these fans?

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/NZXT-AER-RGB-140mm-Single/dp/B07GRN2JBX/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=nzxt+fan+controller&qid=1620514590&sprefix=nzxt+fan+&sr=8-4

The NZXT fan hub , says it can fit 3 fan connectors but each are 10w , which means I can connect 3 sets on fans on each is that connect then the software to control the speed and RGB ?

Looking for content on the best case fans. Having a hard time finding what I am looking for.

    Posted: 09 May 2021 10:59 AM PDT

I am building a system in the Lian Li O11 Mini and want to do so using air cooling (yes I know the case is designed for water cooling but the termals are still good with air cooling and it will be made for someone that wants to fire and forget).

In this case I want to also fill the case with fans for Aesthetic reasons but I also want to sacrifice as little performance as I can (might even keep some of the fans disconnected if it will make the thermals worse).

The case can fit 9 fans and I want to basically set them up as:

    • 3x120mm Intake on the bottom (behind a Dust Filter) (No RGB)
    • 2x140mm Intake on the Side (behind a Dust filter) (RBG)
    • 3x120mm Exhaust on the top (No RGB, No Dust filter)
    • 1x120mm Exhaust on the back (No RGB, No Dust filter)

From what I have looked up I am looking for fans that focus on static pressure as the intakes, and airflow on the exhausts. Although if the fans look too dissimilar I might have to settle for the same fans across the whole case. As well, I want to keep the system fairly quiet around 30-35db where possible so I am looking mostly for noise normalized content.

I've been finding a lot of good content testing fans but rarely does the content look at fans behind dust covers / static pressure fans as intakes. It mostly has them tested open air which isn't necessarily going to reflect performance in case behind a dust filter.

    Content such as:

For the most part the testing results aren't too too different but again, rarely tests fans in a case behind a dust filter.

In this case I might just look at using the best performers from Radiator testing as my Static Pressure fans and the best performers from the open air testing as my exhaust fans but not sure if this is the way I should go.

Anyone have any other good content that I could consume to help me out here? Even content in the same vein of what I am currently looking at could help out.

There also isn't much testing done on RGB fans so any help getting any content on how well RGB fans seem to perform would also be amazing.

    Thanks.
