This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Does a cat touching a motherboard brick it?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 12:45 PM PDT

I was thinking of getting an open air case, but I have one large (furry) issue. My cat loves licking and touching my pc. Would him licking and rubbing on a motherboard brick it? Thanks in advance!

GPU doesn’t rise above ~61 celsius even under the heaviest load

    Posted: 03 May 2021 12:20 PM PDT

Been benchmarking my RX 480 with an MSI air cooler and was surprised it didn't rise past this point ever. Is it limiting my potential performance? Or should I just be happy with the lower termparature.

Looking into getting a big WD HDD, but afraid of noise

    Posted: 03 May 2021 02:33 PM PDT

I'm considering buying a WD Black 3.5 6TB SATA 3, mostly to store videogames. Does anyone having the drive experience serious noise problems?

Also, are there other cheaper viable drive options? Seagate Barracuda seems to have similar speeds, could that work?

I have an MSI mag274qrf non qd and the refresh rate is stuck at 120 hz instead of showing 144 hz.

I have a rtx 3070 and i tried updating the latest drivers, diabling anti motion blur and using the dp cable that comes with the monitor. Can someone please help me fix this?

Do high refresh rate 24" 1440p monitors exist anymore?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 11:41 AM PDT

As the title says - my desk would be more able to accommodate this size (looking to do triple) than 27". It seems there used to be models of this spec available up until a year ago from major manufacturers, but I cannot for the life of me find one that exists anymore.

Am I SOL in finding this spec?

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Casual gaming, I'll be playing GTA V with graphical mods mostly. Streaming as well.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1920x1080p +60fps on most games on high settings (not aiming for ultra).

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    Around 1400 max

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Germany

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I would love to buy another monitor but am unsure of whether to buy a cheaper one that serves as a secondary or not buy one at all for the moment and save for a better one later. This is an option I would use as a second monitor if I were to buy it with the current setup:

    Asus VA24EHE at €129.9

    https://www.amazon.de/-/en/gp/product/B07ZTJXBJW/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=ABQJGLE2G5CGH&psc=1

I am basically just looking for the GPU and because of the current situation I didn't put a price in the listing for it. I am considering buying an used GPU too.

I also found a completely built pc someone is selling in my state and I'm currently debating on whether to keep looking for a GPU or buying this other 3 month used PC which has the same GPU. Here are the specs for the other PC:

    Mainboard: ASUS TUF B450M-PRO GAMING

    Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X

    Memory: RAM DDR4 16GB / 2666 (Crucial) CL19

GPU: NVidia 6GB GTX1660 Super PNY

    SSD: M.2 2280 SSD SATA 250GB HP S700

    HDD: 1 TB 3,5" SATAIII WesterDigital D10EZEX

Power Supply: ATX Corsair CV550 (80Plus)

    Case: TX C-907 Cobweb o.N.

    WLAN: PCIe 3000Mbit DMG-35 WiFi6+BT5.0 (Intel AX200)

Without monitor and keyboard it is being sold at 850 €

I don't particularly love the case on this other PC and I would prefer having just 1 SSD instead of the SSD + HDD combination this one ffers

I would love some feedback on all of this doubts I have. Thanks in advance

NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.

Does a new build need a CPU fan to post?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 10:35 AM PDT

I'm working on a new 5900x build with my old GPU. With all the AMD issues I decided to test my build like this before putting the case and AIO together.

    https://ibb.co/HD60CMz

It starts up then runs through the mobo lights. Sometimes it shuts off and others it goes into a screen that says CPU fan error.

Before I put the AIO on. Could there be anything else to test with it first?

The GPU and SSD are from a previous build I know those work. The motherboard had a Ryzen 5000 compatible sticker added into the box so I'm trying to see if the BIOS version sticker on the motherboard is one that supports the 5900x.

EDIT 1: I have a IR temp gun and the CPU isn't going over 50C according to that. So I don't think it's overheating without the fan.

EDIT 2: I'm going to continue the build as normal. Will update upon completion.

EDIT 3: After a regular assembly it booted up first time and seems stable. To anyone who finds this post later, don't test it without a heat synch. Won't work and might damage it. Also, the 5900x is working out of the box now with ASUS Prime X570-Pro. No need for a BIOS flashback. The CPU is has been idling at 30C for the past 30 minutes.

PC randomly shut off and won't turn on.

    Posted: 03 May 2021 11:46 AM PDT

I was playing DOOM Eternal, when my monitor suddenly shut off. My GPU light is still on, and my keyboard is still has its lights on. Is this a PSU issue or? I've tried unplugging it, turning the PSU on and off, and it doesn't help. Any tips appreciated!!

Disk drive fits in the back of a Lian Li PC-O11 Dyanmic

Kinda had to force it a bit, but a standard disk drive (7x6x2) fits in the back where the second PSU would go after removing the cage. It's a little janky, but cheaper than buying a new Bluray and DVD player!

I found out that in Blender you can choose the gpu to do all of the rendering work so I changed my build so that instead of 5900X + 3070, I did 5600X + 3080. Btw, I will also use this pc for gaming as well.

Motherboard doesn't boot, only rgb rams light up

    Posted: 03 May 2021 01:04 PM PDT

I sold a motherboard with a processor to someone and he claims it's not working for him, Apparently he can't boot it, the fans don't spin and only the rgb ram lights up, when it worked just fine for me. Is it possible the case or hard drive causes this?

Need help deciding what monitor mount to buy

    Posted: 03 May 2021 12:50 PM PDT

I just got a new desk and I'd like to be able to mount my monitor to it because the stand is so big. Only problem is my desk is pretty flush to the wall, and I'd like to keep my monitor closer to the wall as well. I'm just wary of wall mounting it because I'd like to be able to move it in the future. I'm also worried that the desk is too thin. It's about .6 inches thick and made of MDF board.

The monitor is 27", 8 pounds, and has a 75x75 vesa compatibility. I'd like to keep the cost below $50 too if possible.

    Looking to replace my GTX970

    Posted: 03 May 2021 02:54 PM PDT

My GTX970 got fried somehow when the power supply died and so I'm looking to replace it. I was going to just buy the same card again but it looks like the price has not gone down in 5 years somehow?? (I must be missing something here because all the GTX970 on Newegg are $799 but I paid $329 in 2015)

Anyways, what alternative should I consider? Dxdiag.

I'm not sure if there's a point in upgrading since my CPU and RAM are probably bottlenecking the GPU regardless of what I get but please correct me if I'm wrong. If I'm not then I'm just looking to have the same performance level I had with the 970 and not pay more than needed.

Is this enough space underneath my PC for PSU airflow?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 12:40 PM PDT

I've had a bad run with some known reliable PSUs recently - two dead Seasonic SSR-650FX over the course of two years - I'm running a GTX 2080, a handful of hard drives, and a Ryzen 7 3700X, and according to pretty much every calculator, I've got a decent amount of wiggle room at 650 watts.

Instead of RMAing the new one, I bit the bullet and got a known-good 750. I know it's not necessary, but I figured I could use that extra power for the future if I upgrade, and I'm wary to put another one of the Seasonic 650FX in my build, since I've had so much bad luck with the others.

I've already got a decent APC power strip, but I picked up a UPS recently, so hopefully it smooths out any issues with power coming in.

So, bottom line, I think one of the only issues I can assume could continue happening after this setup is that either I have very bad luck with PSUs, which can't be helped, or they were overheating from the carpet.

Long question short, TLDR, whatever - Is this enough space under my PC for the PSU bottom intake on a very low-pile/solid carpet? There's a little vent filter down there that I clean on occasion, but it never gets too nasty.

The cords aren't usually down there blocking the underside, I just got done installing the new PSU, so my cables are a mess. I'll get them out of there soon.

Of note, I've got a second media center PC less than a foot away from this one and have had zero issues with PSUs going out, so I might be worrying about nothing.

    Which SSD is better?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 02:40 PM PDT

I want to buy an SSD to my setup and I'm not sure which one is better.

    I've been considering

    Samsung 980 500 GB M.2 2280 PCI-E x4 Gen3 NVMe

Samsung 870 EVO 500 GB 2.5" SATA III

    Samsung 860 EVO 500GB M.2 SATA III

First one seems way better in terms of speed, but i'm not sure why it costs less than the rest. Am i missing something? Second one is faster than the last one, but uses SATA cable instead of M.2 port. Does it matter?

    My current setup:

    Gigabyte B450 AORUS ELITE V2

    Ryzen 3600

    2x8GB ram

    Radeon rx 570

    Any help would be appreciated.

New to PC's and need some advice on upgrades to my MSI Trident X pre-built I bought due to massive shortages

    Posted: 03 May 2021 02:37 PM PDT

    My current specs are

    CPU: I7-10700k

    GPU: 2070S

    RAM: 32GB

but the kicker is that ive since discovered the RAM cam on one stick not dual or quad sitck.

Is this an issue? Im wanting to stream games like warzone, apex , LOL and can get around 110 FPS while streaming on medium graphics, would investing in another 32GB ram significantly increase performance? Or even 2 16GB's to replace the 32GB

Any help would be greatly appreciated

HELP PLEASE! RTX2060 Gaming OC Pro Fan Issue - No spinning at high temps but getting signal out of DVI

    Posted: 03 May 2021 05:07 AM PDT

So I have an issue where the fan doesn't rev after it hits a certain threshold, say like in the high 60s and 70s. The weird thing is I am getting signal to my monitor still.

I have tried updating, rolling back drivers. DDU Uninstalled, installed MSI Afterburner to take control of the fans manually but no luck. It is a fairly new card, bought and installed last September so I don't see how dust or oil or any hardware on the GPU itself would be an issue. I have also tried a different PSU with new PCIE power cables.

Is there anything else out there I should be trying? I have seem to run out of luck searching for any solution. Thanks!

Micro-ATX 1151 Motherboard that supports overclocking

    Posted: 03 May 2021 12:08 PM PDT

So a few years ago I built a new PC with an i5-9600k. However, in my infinite wisdom, I managed to find a motherboard that doesn't allow me to overclock. I was to move to a new case, and figured now is as good of time as any to fix this, however, a lot of the boards I've looked at don't support overclocking. Does anyone have reccomendations for a good micro-atx motherboard that will overclock my 9600k?
