I repaired an iBuyPower liquid cooling system and found a major manufacturing problem.

    Posted: 11 Apr 2021 08:59 AM PDT

Hey guys! I know this is a subreddit about building, not working with prebuilt systems. However, I figured it might apply to people upgrading their systems or looking into whether they should buy or build.

My friend has a fairly new iBuyPower PC, and he's been seeing his CPU temps spike up to 100C and shut down his computer. I'm a bit of a repair guy, so he asked me to take a look at it and see what's up. We had tried new thermal paste and checked the fans, and nothing worked, so I decided to look deeper. I found a pretty severe problem in the system itself, and I wanted to shine a bit of a spotlight on it in case it can help anyone else.

The major problem with these systems seems to be that the factory is filling them with the filthiest tap water they can find. I took the copper plate off the head of the CPU end so I could empty it, fill it, and watch the flow while it ran. (I only powered up the PC in short intervals so the CPU wouldn't overheat with no cooling system in place.) The first sign that something was wrong was that the chamber where the water flows from the inlet to the outlet had white gunk in it. It was also barely flowing when I powered it up. I refilled it and flushed it out several times, using distilled water, methanol (HEET from automotive stores is pure methanol, easy to get), even Listerine. Each time, the pump chugged and could barely move anything through. Eventually, after about 4 flushes, something broke loose and a bunch of white microbial crap all flooded out of the outlet. I flushed it out a couple more times, and each time, more stuff inside broke loose and the pump worked faster and faster. Eventually, the liquid was coming out clean, and the pump had gone from a slow, sludgy trickle to pumping so fast that the water was sloshing out of the head cap.

At that point, I filled it up with a mix of 75% distilled water, 25% HEET (for its antimicrobial properties and breaking of surface tension), and a squirt of racing supercoolant (anti-corrosion compounds). After I got everything reassembled, the CPU was running cooler than it did brand new.

If you get an iBuyPower PC, I highly recommend replacing your coolant. If anyone is interested in the annoyingly long process, I can post instructions in the comments. Unfortunately, I didn't know it was going to be this big of a fustercluck, so I didn't take pics as I went. Would have made an interesting case study.

Armoury crate has me ripping my nonexistent hair out

    Posted: 11 Apr 2021 09:32 AM PDT

So I built a pc about a month or so back and everything was working great, including my 6 ARGB case fans controlled by armoury crate software. Fast forward to about 4 days ago and armoury crate was no longer detecting my devices (at that point my custom profile was still working). It was suggested to me to uninstall armoury crate and reinstall it. This has caused nothing but headaches. As expected once uninstalled there was nothing to control the lights in my system and they all defaulted to red. Now the biggest issue is that no matter WHAT I DO, armoury crate will NOT reinstall I get to the part that says installing components for the connected devices...then it hangs there for a minute or two before ultimately giving the installation failed message. I tried installing myasus to fix the drivers but my system doesn't support v.2 with any of those tools. I had a really fun time building this pc and spent a decent amount of extra time and money on these RGB lights (and new case to show them off) and I just want them to work properly. The software side of things is a big weakness for me and I'm pretty new to the pc building scene, and at this point I'm at a total loss and I need to reach out to the reddit experts for some serious troubleshooting help.

A PC Builder guy has put my 1660 super in second slot of my b450 tomahawk max motherboard instead first. Is there any problem with that ? I have also installed all the relevant drivers for gpu. Changing to first will affect something ?

If you have $2k to build a new pc(including new monitor) at this point would you just buy a prebuilt?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2021 10:21 AM PDT

I have built multiple pcs and love doing it, but With prices out of whack and no end in sight it almost seems better in every way to just get a prebuilt. Thoughts?

Is a 520w PSU enough for RTX 2070 super and 9700k?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2021 12:21 PM PDT

I needed a personal workstation that could do a bit of everything. Threadripper 3960X + RTX 3080

    Posted: 11 Apr 2021 01:32 PM PDT

    https://pcpartpicker.com/b/RB3tt6

I needed a computer upgrade as my work has become more and more intensive over time (seaming hundreds of raw images for photogrammetry, compositing and editing 4K/6K video, processing large sets of data with machine learning training, parametric modeling and rendering).

For the past 10 years I had chosen to use HP workstations due to their prices on sale and the warranties that they included. This time I was unable to find a pre-built business workstation which wasn't already dated technology wise. So, I went ahead and built my own...and boy howdy am I glad I did. It cost a pretty penny but it is exactly what I needed and will not be dated for a while. Definitely worth it.

    Mini itx vs atx/micro ATX?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2021 11:40 AM PDT

I am gonna do something a bit odd, but I am going to barebones a Alienware r10 with a r7 5800 and a 2070 super. I like the small form factor of a mini its case, but I'm concerned if shoving them in there with a 700 watt PSU will greatly affect thermal and overall performance.

First time building a PC - am I making any beginner mistakes?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2021 05:10 AM PDT

[Edit: Thanks, everyone! Lots of great advice here. Several people have mentioned now that I should switch to the Z490 or B560 boards. Just seeking clarification - what are the advantages/disadvantages of doing so, besides saving money? Would I be losing out on any significant features in swapping out of the B460M?]

Hi all - first time poster, and first time PC builder! I'm really excited about doing this, but I'm quite worried about making a mistake, and don't really know anyone experienced with PC building IRL to ask. I guess my main worries are that

    • I'm choosing parts that aren't compatible with each other
    • I'm choosing parts that are old or outdated, and I don't realize that there's something strictly better for a similar price.
    • I'm not choosing the best CPU for my money. I've done some browsing, and the 10700K seems decent, but there seem to be a lot of aspects to CPUs that I don't understand. For example, if I choose a CPU without Integrated Graphics, and I also don't have a graphics card, will that mean that my PC won't be able to display any graphics at all?

Some basic notes about me, if this helps:

    • I'm in Europe, and my budget is €1000.
    • I'm a computer science student, but I know next to nothing about hardware (so physically putting the parts together is going to be... a time, haha)
    • I'm holding off on getting a graphics card until the price goes down.
    • My goal here is to build a very fast, reliable PC for development which I can use for gaming later on, when I can get a graphics card. Before that, the only games I'll be playing on it will be those without significant graphics requirements (retro games, Minecraft, etc)

Let me know in the comments if I'm doing anything wrong here, or if there's anything else that would be good to know! I appreciate that some of my questions or choices here might show my inexperience - apologies if so!

VGA Light Issue after Powering Down

    Posted: 11 Apr 2021 02:02 PM PDT

I went on vacation for two weeks, and turned off power to my PC before I left. (I've used this PC for almost 2 years with no issues) When I returned, I flipped the power switch back on and then hit the button to turn on the PC.

MOBO: MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC CPU: Ryzen 7 2700X GPU: Geforce RTX 2070 Super RAM: Corsair Vengeance 32GB (4 x 8GB) 3200MHz DDR4

Everything seemingly powered on internally, but now I have this red VGA EZ DEBUG LED and a black screen.

What I've done since: 1) Disconnected everything internally and externally. I pulled every component off the MOBO. CPU, GPU, RAM sticks, etc. 2) Cleared CMOS by removing the battery for 5+ minutes and disconnected all power to the PC 3) Reconnected CPU, and one RAM stick. 4) Connected 1 monitor, 1 mouse and 1 keyboard to the PC. 5) Powered on the PC. Nothing

I then redid steps 1-4, but added the GPU back in and connected the monitor to the GPU instead of the integrated slot on the MOBO.

    6) Am now able to access system BIOS, didnt change any settings and used defaults to continue.

    7) PC asks me to reboot and select proper boot device

    8) I reboot, VGA LED is still red, black screen on monitor (but is getting a signal)

    9) BIOS pulls up after 5 minutes, VGA LED is no longer red.

    10) Change boot order to start with internal SSD/HDD.

    11) Save Settings and Reboot

    12) Wait maybe 5 minutes until the BIOS menu

    13) BIOS menu is prompted, which I wait out.

    14) Black screen then shows nothing but an underscore flashing in the upper left for a couple minutes

    15) VGA LED turns off and I get a Black screen with text "Reboot and Select proper boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key"

I've already changed my boot order to have my SSD first, where windows is installed, and has been installed for 2 years.

Any help? I've resat everything. Unplugged and unplugged everything.

Static Pressure Fans or High Airflow for Bottom Intakes?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2021 01:30 PM PDT

    Hello,

I have Lian Li Lancool II Mesh case which I am building a pc in, technically swapping pc into another case, and Im wondering what fans I should purchase for the bottom intakes.

Currently, I have 3 exhaust fans. Two 140mm on top and one 120mm on rear.

I will have a 360mm radiator on front with its 3 fans as an intake.

Leaving the bottom two spots open. So, I read that static fans are best for tight spots with limited access to airflow.

These fans will be above the psu, under my gpu, and since the lancool case has another side mesh cover, I'm not too worried about restricted airflow.

Or I'm thinking too much into this and I should buy any two 120mm fans from Microcenter.

Primarily looking for 4 pin PWM fans that are black, no RGB.

Should I upgrade or start from scratch? (3D rendering)

    Posted: 11 Apr 2021 01:22 PM PDT

So, I have a Mac that I use for graphic design and 3D but I am thinking of building/upgrading a PC for 3D rendering to speed up my workflow.

I have an old gaming PC from 2012 with the following specs:

    Intel Core i5 2500K Processor

    8GB 1333Mhz DDR3 Memory

    NVIDIA GTX 550 1GB Graphics

    Foxconn H67M Motherboard

I have a 4k monitor and the current graphics card does not support 4k. Do you think I should upgrade or just start from scratch?

Edit — Thanks for the replies! Looks like I will be starting from scratch :D

Finally, First ever Pc Build and Setup complete

    Posted: 11 Apr 2021 01:15 PM PDT

    setup

I've been struggling building my first ever PC, I had some random ticking noises surrounded on my power supply, after hearing that and seeing my monitor display such no screen.. I felt fucking failure after that I failed building my pc. Luckily I had all my stuff ordered from Amazon except the GPU which I had used Best Buy to track down myself an rtx 3060ti. Weeks later I went to frys (rip) before it had been shut and then wanted to see what the problem is. They told me they'd charge my 70$ for only a diagnostic. so then I declined and almost wanted to return my whole specs back to Amazon but I realized it'd either be my motherboard, cpu or power supply causing all this issues so I had them returned. And after 3 weeks .. I was sad that Ups took forever to ship my item back, and finally after.. I had got to order a different cpu motherboard and a power supply which arrived in the next day from when I bought it. I was feeling like I'd be a loser once again if I had not successfully built it properly and I expected from my self that the chances of failing would be high. After getting all stuff done and ready to test it out.. and I finally found something displaying on my screen I was pumped at that moment. And wanted to buy more stuff for my setup and I have now got my whole setup done today. My specs are Ryzen 5 3600 B550 phantom 4 m/b and an rtx 3060ti
