PC advice - GPU upgrade eclipses all my other components

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 07:30 AM PDT

    Hello all,

Recently I decided to upgrade my GPU from a 1050Ti to a 1660 super. Unfortunately it seems that I rather jumped the gun, as looking at the rest of my pc specs it seems to be too powerful for the system around it.

    60Hz 1080p monitor

    i3-6100 dual core @ 3.7Ghz

Asus H110M-R micro ATX motherboard (LGA 1151 socket only supports 6th/7th gen CPUs)

    Corsair VS 350W Power supply

    2x 4GB DDR4 RAM 2133MHz

    Budget: ~£200 ($280)

Will be using my PC for gaming and VR.

What would the right approach be at the moment? Do I go hunting for a suitable 6th/7th gen cpu and keep the motherboard and power supply? Or would it be more pragmatic to find a new motherboard and CPU combo which likely means I will need a better power supply? If the latter is a better option, what would be some good recommendations for the mobo + cpu that keep within the budget?

    Many thanks in advance.

I need the ugliest (practical) ATX case possible.

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 10:50 AM PDT

I'm working with a few friends to do a build for a financially unfortunate friend as a surprise. We have all the parts we need, but an important factor is that this friend is also an asshole, so since this PC will be free for him, and he doesn't know enough about PCs to do a case swap himself, we'd like to get him an extremely ugly case to put it in. He can't really do anything about it, so we want the sort of thing he'll have to explain to his wife and everyone else who enters his house and sees it. The only real requirement is that it fit an ATX board and a dual fan AIO. The uglier the better. Horrid colors, general ugly design, odd shape, hit me with your worst. We considered a sleeper build, but decided against it due to space and airflow concerns.

Would have loved to have gone with this absolute abomination, but it's unfortunately too small. That's the caliber of hideous we're aiming for, though.

do you find it hard to shed your HDD habits after upgrading to SSD?

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 09:36 AM PDT

Years of working on an old HDD got me in the habit of walking away from my computer after I turned it on, finding something to busy myself like making breakfast because I knew it would take a while to start up.

This is completely unnecessary now but I still tend to do it. It's hard to unlearn the habit and just start using the computer right away when you turn it on.

16, switching to pc after using gaming consoles my whole life, need advice on my current build. Roughly a budget of 1500-2000 but I am willing to go over if it is worth it.

I'm looking to run games(mostly overwatch and valorant) on high fps, at least 140 maybe higher. I am also planning to do a lot of live streaming.

I have watched lots of youtube videos explaining how to build and what each part does.

I have a friend who works at micro center so getting any parts that are scarce(gpu) at retail price is not a problem. I am pretty sure I will wait for a deal on a good monitor, but if there is anything currently available that is a good quality and reasonable price please let me know. Thank you!

SSD not showing up in bios

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 11:11 AM PDT

Hi, I have been able to get my pc to post, however the "boot option priorities" tab is greyed out and it doesn't recognize the ssd. I tried connecting it to a different cable, this did not work however. Any advice?

Building my first gaming PC and I'm very noob

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 10:05 AM PDT

Hey guys, I have a friend that sent me a list of parts to get and most of them have come in and I'm just waiting for my GPU to come in today. Currently, I have an AIO Desktop that I installed an SSD into but plan to transfer the SSD to my new PC and put my old HDD back into my AIO Desktop. I used Samsung Magician to transfer from HDD to SSD last time, can I use the program to wipe my SSD clean if I plug my old HDD back in? Also, a friend was talking to me about getting a Windows 10 key and putting it on a USB stick. How does one do that?

    Hi,

i'm a bit unsure which processor i should go for...

I mean the i7 has two more cores for a cheaper price here in Germany and the performance is pretty much the same in terms of Gaming...

Any help would be much appreciated :)

    Pc reboots while gaming

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 12:59 PM PDT

    Hey all,

So as the title says my pc randomly starts rebooting I did upgrade my pc from a ryzen 5 2600 to ryzen 5 5600x recently. I figured it was my psu going bad/not pumping out enough juice. So I went from a 750W to a 850W and it still restarts. My cpu is not over heating only gets to about 50-65C while gaming. I mainly play stuff like cold war, apex, destiny 2. I also ran windows memory diagnostics test and it found nothing wrong with my memory. I just hope I don't have a bad cpu :/

Specs: -Ryzen 5 5600x -PNY RTX 2070 -B550M Asrock Steel Legend -Nzxt 850w gold psu -16gb patriot 2400mhz ram -Fractal design s24 celsius Aio

Can you use different sizes of ram in dual channel?

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 02:07 PM PDT

Hi, im wondering if i can use a 8gb stick of gskill aegis 3000mhz with my 16gb stick of gskill aegis 3200mhz. I have checked and they both have same timings and cas latency. Just wondering because another 16gb stick costs almost 200 dollars, thanks!

Upgraded to 6700xt and but no VGA

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 01:21 PM PDT

So I upgraded my rx 580 to a 6700xt and now it won't post. Just gives me 1 long and 3 short beeps which just means so vga detected. The lights come on on card card but the fans don't spin. Bad power supply maybe? But it runs my rx 580 and my HD 7970 fine.

Secured a GPU & CPU, looking for help on the rest.

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 02:29 PM PDT

I managed to get a RX 6700 xt & Ryzen 7 5800x at MC today - though I would've preferred a 3070, but who knows when I'll get a chance to snag a GPU at MSRP again. Anyways, now that I've got my GPU & CPU handled, I want to proceed with the rest of the build.

This is what I've got so far. I've seen some builds include more storage, pairing an SSD and HDD for example, is that worthwhile? Or, am I going to be fine with this build as it is? If there are any other things that need changing feel free to say. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks for your time.

Airflow and other questions for my 4k-focused casual machine.

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 12:48 PM PDT

My goal is to have a machine that'll run games at 30-60 FPS fairly well at 4k, thus I'm skimping on everything but the GPU. I don't value upgrading outside of storage, where I will eventually add an NVME SSD for directstorage when they're reasonably priced. I like to replace my PC every 5 years.

    Parts I've settled on:

    CPU Intel i5 11400F

    ARESGAME Power Supply 650W

Crucial Ballistix RGB 3200 MHz 16GB

    ASRock B560M-HDV Motherboard

    CASE - ???

GPU - Right now a 1070 until I can snag a 3070 or 3060 TI (or maybe a Radeon if they release their DLSS competition and it's good).

Only thing I see as a gamble is the cheap mobo, but it's a pretty big value at 75 with PCIE 4 on both the GPU & an NVME4 slot. I don't need the expandability and the reviews are fine if you exclude people complaining about needing to manually install a LAN driver.

So onto my question finally: how much will I really need to worry about airflow? I am not going to overclock, outside of maybe GPU tuning. Right now I'm looking at this case: https://www.amazon.com/Lian-Water-Cooling-Pre-Installed-LANCOOL-205/dp/B085YFY32L/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Lancool%2B205M&qid=1616094787&sr=8-1&th=1

Comes with all the fans I'd need for a pretty good price. Thoughts? Obviously happy to hear any feedback.

    CPU Decisions

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 07:59 AM PDT

Hello, I currently have an 8700k and am looking for an upgrade. I've been looking at the 10700kf (because super cheap and I have a gpu so why not), 5600x or possibly waiting on the 11700k release. However, I'd rather not go over the $350 range (i know the 5800x is $450). I have two monitors and usually have tons of tabs open and I stream sometimes. The 5600x vs 10700k in terms of fps benchmarks look really similar. What would be the best option for me?

Extra: Would love to accompany this cpu with a nice white mobo, preferrably not above $250-275.

edit: For everyone saying the 8700k is good and all, I agree. I am hwid banned in a game i have missed for over 2 years, which is the reason I'm upgrading my whole build. The gpu performance Im going for is anything around a 3070. Ofc i haven't been able to get my hands on one lol.

Looking to upgrade current build. Think it's my CPU that's the bottleneck, but I haven't thought about CPUs in nearly a decade. Looking for a nudge in the right direction.

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 09:04 AM PDT

    Current build

    Use cases / current hangups.

    • I hate this mobo with a passion. It's been mostly fine since I turned off overvolt protection and nothing's fried yet, but it used to crash every time I plugged an audio device into the rear ports. Onboard sound quality is horrific, especially for the microphone. The BIOS looks fancy at first glance but is mostly useless for any kind of tuning. I've maxed out the socket anyway so there's nowhere else to go.
    • Gaming: Last-gen and indies mostly, I don't typically go in for AAA stuff but was able to run Doom 2016 max quality at 144FPS on this build (Doom Eternal choked on low though). I'll probably get Metro Exodus sometime this year and 144FPS would likewise be nice but not required. I think my main issue might be single-core performance (can barely hit 60FPS in Squad, even script-heavy GZDoom mods can get laggy at times).
    • Photo/image editing: I do a fair bit lot of hobbyist work with high-res images. I often Often run out of memory and/or spend lots of time waiting for processing operations to complete.
    • Audio Editing: I've produced a couple albums for my brother's band. No complaints with real-time performance given my current setup. Exports / encoding are sometimes annoyingly slow.
    • Gameplay streaming/recording: Mostly no complaints with performance while recording or streaming due to GPU NVENC, but re-encoding is typically worse than real-time on most videos.
    • Light overclocking capability would be nice but not necessary.
    • Moderate future-proofing for incremental upgrades. I built the core of this machine in 2014 and it's done fairly well for me (the GPU was gifted last year and the CPU was upgraded from an i3 in 2018). I'll probably not do a major upgrade again for at least 5-8 years.
    • Probably not necessarily something to worry about, but I run Linux and so ideally I'd like my hardware to work well with that.
    • Not opposed to switching but I've been almost exclusively NVidia GPU / Intel CPU my entire life and had very few complaints with either in terms of reliability and compatibility. I worry changing up that paradigm might require an old dog to learn new tricks.

    Budget

Flexible but preferably around/under $500-$600 if possible. I'm working part-time on-call shifts for play money so I have reasonable cashflow but I don't want to go full stupid on super-extreme G4M3R parts. Modern mid-range is probably fine. RAM upgrades can be incremental, I'll probably like to eventually target 64GB but for now 16-24 should be okay.

can anyone help with motherboard & CPU & power supply for audio & graphics workstation built around Ryzen 9?

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 06:04 AM PDT

Hi, my current Pc a bit old and looking for an upgrade. I figure a Ryzen 9 should be a nice step up from my current processor (i73930K)

i still have my corsair LPX ram and gtx1080 which is fine for the time being, i mostly do graphics and music production, so really looking for CPU, Mobo and maybe power supply if needed (i have a 650W Corsair CS650M) as best single core and multicore performance needed

trying to get a good bang for buck if possible - oh - i use a LOT of usb devices, so if there is a solution that has a lot of USB ports or a better controller or whatever needed to help, that would be great

i guess budget is around £750 but will stretch if need be

    many thanks

    Is RAM upgrade worth it?

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 01:19 PM PDT

    Hello,

Sorry for making a new post, instead of using comments in Simple questions, because new comment text field is not loading for me.
Someone I know is upgrading RAM in his PC and he wants to sell old RAM sticks, so I wonder, if it is worth for me to buy his old RAM sticks.
My Motherboard is HP 2B17, CPU is AMD A8-6500 and my current RAM stick is "8gb 2rx8 pc3-12800u-11-13-b1". RAMs I could buy are "HyperX Fury Blue 4GB DDR3 1600 CL10" and 2GB version.
I'm wondering if I can use all of them in my PC and how different will performance of my PC be.
My PC is used for internet, gaming and school.
    Thanks for any help.

First time PC builder, questions about cpu and gpu.

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 10:20 AM PDT

I've been planning out a build something that will have great specs for many years, I was looking at the i9-10900k, is that necessary? Can I go with something a little cheaper? I'd like to eventually get a 30 series gpu (yay optimism!) Now to gpu, since that would be a ways off am I still able to use the computer normally untill I get a gpu? Like just web browsing and stuff till then and get by with just the integrated graphics?

EDIT: most intensive activity I'll be doing without a gpu is using roll20 and discord for dnd. Once I get a gpu I'll be playing plenty games and some light video editing

Installed 8 GB ram yesterday, now my pc only boots without the older ram.

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 12:56 PM PDT

So I had one ddr4 8 gb 2133 MHz ram on my computer (motherboard is an asus prime b250m-k), and I wanted to put more 8 GB to get better performance, so I bought one and got it yesterday, it is a 8 GB ddr4 ram with 2400mhz but as soon as I installed my pc stopped working, I went for hours and hours trying to solve it but I couldn't, I then tried to switch rams and tried every combination possible with my ram sticks and the two times it worked was only when the new ram was slotted alone, I don't know what happened to the old one but I'd like to fix this since I want to get 16 gb and I'd also like to know if my old ram is actually dead, I don't think is is dead since it has always worked fine until now, any suggestions?

Monitor display has horizontal green lines and is going black

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 05:50 AM PDT

So I just recently bought a prebuilt PC. I was getting everything set up yesterday, but when I hooked up my monitor, the screen had horizontal green lines taking up about 75% of the screen. My buddy suggested I update all the drivers and change the resolution settings, so I got connected to the internet and managed to download and install the drivers while the lines were still on the screen. After the download I was prompted to reset the PC, and when restarting, the PC started up again with the green lines displayed, but instead just went to a black screen. The monitor was indeed on, I could change input settings and brightness, etc, but there was no display.

We went into the BIOS, tried reinstalling windows, and tried reseating the GPU and the monitor still won't display anything, and when it does show that windows is starting up, it has the green lines again and goes back to black eventually. My buddy thinks my graphics card may be have shown up DOA, so I just wanted to consult this sub before making any calls for some last minute advice. The card is a Gigabyte RTX 3070. Any help would be appreciated!
