This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Sparks from PSU - cause for concern?

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 06:37 AM PDT

Hi, I recently installed the NZXT C750 into my new PC and everything seemed to work fine. Due to a periodic Bluetooth problem on my motherboard (B550) I unplugged the PC and held down the power button for a few seconds to clear out any static and charge.

However, when I plugged the PC back in and switched on the power supply, I saw a white flash near the power supply, and the motherboard lights that usually turn on didn't turn on. I was convinced that something died. I was really scared so I quickly switched off the power supply, then I turned it on again after a few moments and surprisingly everything seemed to be as normal. The lights came on, the PC works and nothing seems to be out of the ordinary. Do you think anything went wrong? Should I replace the power supply?

    Thank you!

Scalpers are selling these cards for as much as 3X their MSRP. Shop carefully and don't get ripped off. Never buy a card, especially used cards, that will be shipped by an individual unless you know and/or trust the seller (I'm looking at you, ebay). A possible exception to that is hardware bought on r/hardwareswap. The mods there do a pretty good job of vetting sellers, but they aren't perfect. Buying in person is always better. If you use PayPal be aware that scammers are opening PayPal accounts and then closing or abandoning them after they get your money. Be aware that even Amazon and Newegg get scammed occasionally. Amazon makes absolutely no attempt to bar scalpers. In fact, Amazon will lock item ratings when people post scalper alerts. Scammers are selling empty boxes and pictures of boxes. Check the shrink wrap and box seals on "new" cards. Always check used cards for physical damage to the case, PC board, edge connectors, and/or mounting hardware. Look for board warping, excessive dust, broken or cracked fan blades, rusty or missing screws, broken or missing tamper seals, separation of the PC card from the heat sink. All of these are signs of a poorly maintained and possibly defective card. Ask for a demo, if possible.

I hope this helps new builders.

EDIT: I was going to add a section for AMD Radeon cards, but AMD sells them direct and the aftermarket manufacturers don't report their MSRPs to AMD. Their prices are all over the place. If you paid less than AMD's advertised prices, congratulations!

    https://www.amd.com/en/direct-buy/us

EDIT 2: On January 1, the tariff on electronics imported from China went into effect. It's a 10% tariff on the price of the goods declared to US customs. Some of the manufacturers (Asus and others) have built the tariff into their MSRP. In other words, the MSRP they report to Nvidia includes the tariff. Others have not. Nvidia hasn't changed the MSRP of their founders edition cards and they are swallowing the tariff. So is AMD. TLDR; Actual MSRPs on some cards could be as much as 10% higher. Yay trade wars! /s

Do I really need a Close Quarters cooling bracket?

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 05:18 AM PDT

I have a MSi RTX2080 gaming x trio 8gb, and used it in a water cooling system. I decided to return back to the stock cooling, but I seem to have lost the Close Quater's cooling bracket. From just a thermal perspective, would they be critical?

I'm building a pc but I don't know nothing about pcs

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 03:31 AM PDT

Hey guys, I've finally decided to build a new pc, but I don't know how to pick the right parts for it, so after searching trough reddit, youtube and other sites, I came up with a build that I consider decent (considering that I didn't want to spend too much).

The build:Processor: AMD Ryzen 3 3300XMotherboard: Gigabyte B450 AORUSGraphics Card: GeForce GTX 1650 or GeForce GTX 1070RAM: Crucial Ballistix 16GBHDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TBPSU: Corsair CX450PC Case: Phanteks Eclipse P300

I would really appreciate your guys help, sorry that I don't know anything about this kinda stuff (and please don't recommend anything too much expensive) :)

Will my system support an upgrade to RX480/570? Will there be a big difference in gaming performance?

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 05:45 AM PDT

I currently have the following set-up

    Motherboard - Asus H81m-c

    CPU - i5-4460

    RAM - 8gb

    PSU - 700w

    GPU - AMD Radeon HD 6570 (4GB)

I am thinking of upgrading my GPU to an RX480/570. Will it be compatible with my motherboard considering my motherboard has a PCIe 2.0 x16 slot while the RX480/570 is PCIe 3.0 x16? And if ever I push through with upgrading, will there be a big difference when it comes to gaming (specifically for apex legends)? Do I also have to worry about the wattage of my power supply? This is my first time installing PC hardware myself, Thank you very much.

Need help on deciding on graphics cards on a budget.

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 06:34 AM PDT

Currently running off a PC that runs a few games and such I.e. can baseline run destiny2 on low graphics and stuff like for honor on EXTREMLEY low settings (everything looks about as smooth as gravel) and simply want something to run at least something like rainbow six siege or call of duty. Currently in it ive whacked these parts:

graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce Gt 710, 1GB. GDDR 5.

processor: Intel Pentium cpu 4400 dual core 3.30Ghz.

    with 8GB of ram.

anyone got any recommendations for something that can actually run some heavier graphically games (even on low) on an under £100 budget or is that asking too much?

6900 XT vs RTX 3080 question

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 09:28 AM PDT

    Hi,

Someone is offering to trade me a 6900 XT for my Aorus Xtreme 3080. Is there any reason why I shouldn't do this?

My only concerns are how AMD cards work with content creation apps like Topaz Products, Adobe, Blender etc.

And I've seen benchmark reviews on the 6900 XT vs the 3080 and in most cases its slim margin of error. In some cases one beats the other by a lot.

I'm also curious what you guys think of the upcoming FidelityFX tools and if that will put the AMD cards on top?

I have a short time to decide on this so any help/opinions would be appreciated.

EDIT*** Thanks for all the opinions ive told the guy I won't trade.

    Non-Mechanical Keyboard Recommendations

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 08:29 AM PDT

Any recommendations on a non-mechanical keyboard that has anti-ghosting (or a quiet mechanical, if htat's a thing)? I'm currently using a sidewinder X4, but I want to ditch the numpad and get a separate detached numpad.

I live with other humans so the clickity clackity is a bit much.

Looking to upgrade the 2200g in my PC to something better but I only have an a320m motherboard. Am I better to buy a new CPU and MOBO or just CPU.

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 04:30 AM PDT

So I bought this PC of my brother a year or so ago and have upgraded the RAM, GPU and storage but still have the old CPU and MOBO. I've been looking to upgrade because games like Cyberpunk run horribly. If anyone has some advice on whether its worth me just buying a used 2700 off Gumtree and keeping the Motherboard or going for a newer 3000 series and a new motherboard. Price is my main issue as I'd like to keep it as low as possible while still getting a performance boost. Thanks.

Multiple SSD question, slower SSD for OS?

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 08:52 AM PDT

I just got a new PC that comes with the latest M.2 SSD of 512mb.

I have a much older 2.5'' SSD Intel 510 that works well but I'm wondering if I should even bother using it? I like having seperate drives, and I game a lot. Would I benefit from seperating my games and my OS. I'm thinking of using the older one for Windows, game launchers, apps and the new one for alll my installed games.

    Default:

    New SSD: OS/Apps + Gaming

    HDD: Data

    Old SSD: ??? WTF

    My Plan

    New SSD: Gaming only

    HDD: Data

    Old SSD: OS/Apps

RTX 3060 driver not compatible with windows

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 04:12 AM PDT

    Hey all,

I've just built a new PC, and all the parts work, yay! Except now I'm trying to install the nvidia driver for my 3060 and I keep getting the error 'this driver is not compatible with this version of windows.'

I installed windows from a disk I had lying around from my last build which was five years ago. I updated windows 10 pro and it's now on version 1511 build 10586. It says there are no more updates to download. I've made sure that the system is 64x and the driver I'm downloading is 64x.

Do I have to buy a new version of windows to install these drivers? Or is there anything else I can do to avoid having to pay a ton of money for a new version of windows?

New pc becomes unsmooth after a WEEK (the unfixable issue)

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 09:51 AM PDT

Before i go into details, don't reply if you dont trust me and think im just crazy. Thanks.Alot of people is having this issue, but doesnt seems to fix it... never

-I've had 4-5 gaming pc's, all with same issue.

-Lived in 5 different appartments around Copenhagen.

-Troubleshooting this problem for over 10 years

Problem:Pc becomes unsmooth, not responsive, feels delayed, games shows 500fps @ 144hhz, but feels like 30hz.

    Every game is unplayable, competetive-wise.

    BUT!

Whenever i try out a new fix, for example.. new ram sticks, windows tweaks in regedit or reinstalling windows. It becomes smooth for a day or two.

I can clearly feel the difference, when starting up pc, and moving mouse around desktop.

Internet is 1000/200mbit, so pings are fine.

    RIG atm: RTX 3070, Ryzen 7 5800x, 16gb ram. 144hz asus

    Question is..

"Why does my pc becomes smooth after a fix and bad the next day?"

I really appreciate help, but :)

    - Dont post like "try put vsync off" or anything near that pls.

    Edit, tried LatensyMon..

    PSU Recommendations for Ampere

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 04:49 AM PDT

So, I managed to snag a 3060 which will be coming in the next few days, however I am worried about my power supply, I'm currently running an AMD 3400GE with two 8GB RAM modules in dual channel mode on a A320 Chipset mobo (yeah it's pretty much a budget build), with 1 M.2 SSD, 2 2.5" SSDs and 1 HDD and several (7) case fans

    It's being run by a Seasonic S12III 550W

Should I consider buying another PSU for my upcoming card?

Obviously the video card i'm going to have to wait for.

As for the PSU, i still have my https://pcpartpicker.com/product/qYTrxr/evga-power-supply-220g20550y1

I'm pretty sure 550 watts is going to be fine for this new build?

First build in 6 Years, desk PC build. Some semi-basic questions for my sanity.

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 12:36 PM PDT

Hey folks! I've had my current build for 7 years. (980gtx, i5, 32gb Ram, 3 monitors, way too many storage devices to count.) I'm finally in a spot to where I can build a new PC but I have a few general questions since I've only done basic builds in the past.

This build is a little unique for me, I'm working with my father to design and build a desk where we can integrate the build into it. Nothing $3,000 fancy but better than average I'd hope. We have the design of the desk drawn out and discussed and were waiting on weather to start the physical build, and in the mean time I'm looking into what should go into the desk.

1: When I do a build I try to future proof it for 8 years~ish. With this in mind and DDR5 ram rolling out late this/next year do you think it would be smart to wait until October and see where it stands?

2: I've never done Liquid cooling, and I'm hesitant to start here. I have the design planned out for plenty of fans and cooling already. Do you think it'd be worth it to at least experiment for something of this level of uniqueness?

3: Sacrifices to the gods so GPU prices go back to normal? Please?

4: I'm new to making a build actually look nice, so any suggestions or tips would be amazing. My previous builds were purely functional and hideous.

Any help is much appreciated! I'm just worried about spending 1-2k on a build and it being boring looking and super dated in 4 years.

    New Build for XPlane 11

    Posted: 15 Mar 2021 05:58 AM PDT

    Hello BAPC,

I'm helping a friend's dad build a new rig. From what i understand, he wants it almost exclusively for flight sims, and more specifically XPlane 11. He also wants it to last a while and has a 2k budget. I've read that it has a high single thread load on the CPU so a quad core with higher processor speed is better than a 6 or 8 core. I've been out of the hardware game a while so any advice on what to look for and what to avoid would be nice. I'm thinking getting a better motherboard/CPU with room to grow and saving money on a later gen (but still more than awesome) graphics card. Making it easier to upgrade and keeping the bones of this rig a while rather than having to rebuild in a few yeas when the next version comes out. Not sure if he wants this but VR ready would be a nice thing to throw in.

He's already got the Yoke, peddles radio boxes from his old rig so having enough USB ports is a thing too.

As the title states, i recently installed this AIO cooler. I have a ASRock Z390 Phantom gaming 4 mobo, so theres no specific pump headers on it, just CPU_FAN (thats where theyre plugged into). Is there a workaround for this?
