PSA 3090 / 3080 transient load spikes north of 500w according to Seasonic.

So after having some issues with my new 10900k / 3090 system cutting out and rebooting I narrowed it down to the power supply after testing with a friends 1000w unit, and brothers 850w unit.

The power supply in my system was a 1 year old Seasonic 850w Prime Ultra Ti, carried over from a previous build which isn't exactly a low spec 850w.

I had a chat to Seasonic, they let me know that in their labs they have seen RTX 3090 transient loads spike to north of 550W before the power limits kick in and pull them back down.

In my case it was bad enough that even with everything stock (CPU TVB on and it's under water) it was shutting off and rebooting if I hit a area of a game that was both CPU and GPU intensive. Typically this would happen just after a level load screen as it rendered the new scene.

So just something to keep in mind, it looks like while the power numbers in reviews are probably accurate average numbers, they may not be showing the absolute momentary peak numbers these GPU's can spike up to which can trip OCP if you don't have the headroom there. It might be worth going a little overkill on your PSU especially if you plan on doing some overclocking.

(I have a 1300w seasonic prime gold on the way, will do more testing when that arrives, might throw a current clamp on it.)

    EMI and PC Cases?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 03:29 PM PST

    EMI: Electromagnetic Interference

I've been tinkering with designs for 3D printed computer cases and was made aware of EMI and how modern cases are intended to shield interference generated by the computer components. Being fully plastic, 3D printed cases can't offer any shielding in either direction that the components themselves don't already have.

My best understanding of EMI right now is analogous to active noise cancellation, but I'm not quite sure how to translate that into electrical signals.

I've been using an all plastic case for 6 months or more and know that I'm very far from the first person to create a non-metal case, but I haven't been running into any notable side effects that this might cause.

I was hoping that somebody more knowledgeable about the topic could shed some light on just how much of an issue this could be, whether it's inherent in the design of modern cases due to metal construction, and how open-form or mesh/glass panels would change shielding versus all plastic (if at all).

My gaming notebook has two video cards. AMD Radeon RX Vega 10 and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650. How does this work?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 01:36 AM PST

I Bought a gaming notebook HP Pavilion 15. It's processor states it is an:

    - AMD Ryzen 7 3750H with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx 2300Mhz, 4 cores, 8 logical processors

First question: What is the difference between this and the normal AMD Ryzen 7 3750H? Is it worse somehow?

But I also have a separated video card:

    - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650

Second question: How does this work in the background, do I use both cards together? If not, I imagine that heavy loads would go to the NVIDIA card, but would the loading and unloading between cards be bad for performance?
