This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

After two months of troubleshooting, I finally have a working PC!

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 08:28 AM PST

After securing a 3070 on launch day, I inevitably used up all my luck. My first build would randomly repost. I tried everything within my limited understanding of PCs to troubleshoot. Swapped PSU's and MOBO's, ran memtest86, reinstalled windows countless times. Even had a buddy send me a separate SSD with windows installed and the latest 3070 driver.

After 2 months, I finally realized that paired with Kernel power 41 was a WHEA error detailing a Cache Hierarchy error with my Ryzen 5 3600. I RMA'd that immediately and AMD sent me a replacement. So far I've had no issues for the past day. Gonna hold my breath for the next week and hope my build doesn't explode, haha!

Edit: A little clarification. When I say that the Kernel Power 41 error is "paired" with a WHEA error, this means both errors would occur within 2-5 seconds of each other. I'd get a black screen repost situation. When I'd get back into windows, event viewer would report the Critical Kernel Power error, and then the WHEA logger error. This stands for Window Hardware Error Architecture, and it's a framework designed to alert if a piece of fundamental hardware is faulty. For Me the details of my error were this: "A fatal hardware error has occurred. Component: Processor Core. Error source: Machine Check Exception. Error Type: Cache Hierarchy. And then it would list which Core was experiencing the issue. While I don't know 100% how a CPU functions, I know that Cache Hierarchy is fundamental to the successful function of the CPU itself. I explained this exactly to AMD and they approved the RMA without further questions.

I appreciate everyone's comments and Silver awards too!

Anyone who bought 5600x, if you can spare it change your cpu cooler

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 07:36 AM PST

Get a cheap 150-180w TDP cooler like ID-cooling SE-224-XT, Hyper 212, Cryorig H7, seriously any sub 20USD tower cooler and you'll see drastic improvement in temperatures.

I went from 80C on full load to 56-60C.

Edit: there's a lot naysayers in this post. Take a look at this: https://youtu.be/JkoULK8crzU or this: https://youtu.be/D-Q4dlFtAeA My casing, fan setup, orientation etc doesn't matter. You're missing the point. I'm saying that with the same setup minus the cpu cooler, I'm getting a reduction of ~20C on the same load and it's quieter to boot.

Here's the before and after yes it isn't perfect but you can draw the conclusion yourself.

This post is solely talking about reduction in temps after changing the stock cooler. You guys are really taking things out of context. There's nothing in the original OP talking about throttling, performance etc. I don't have answers about benchmarks, performance, boost etc. AGAIN SOLELY ABOUT TEMPERATURES

Console to PC is 1000 percent worth it

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 10:46 AM PST

So I built my first pc a month ago and before I was playing on ps4. Let me just say that upgrading to pc is completely worth it. From the building experience, which was surprisingly fun to playing games on it at 1440p 144fps is just a much better experience than playing on console. I still use my ps4 for exclusives like the spiderman games and nba 2k and fifa but I play all other games on pc such as rocket league, warzone, valorant and occasionally fortnite(only creative). If you are thinking about switching to pc and u can afford it, go for it.

New SSD marked "not for retail sale"

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 04:31 AM PST

Bought a new Samsung 860 Evo for my laptop's 2.5" expansion slot and as the title says, it says "not for retail sale" on the box. Any ideas if this matters /why that's the case?

Purchased from Amazon, the part number is MZ-76E500

    Thanks in advance!

Edit: thanks for all your advice, it's much appreciated!

Drive is now installed and working fine. Had to cannibalise my old laptop as it didn't come with screws to secure it, but all good 😬

    Building a PC at microcenter

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 05:48 AM PST

    Hello,

I used to build a lot and love the experience of it all, however, I am no longer a fan of waiting on postage and would like to see if its possible to build an entire rig at a microcenter from one visit.

I haven't built a rig since the GTX760 was released so its been a while, and my ADHD fitted with impulsiveness and impatience demands its time to build again but I would hate to wait on shipping. So my question is, could I walk into any microcenter and be able to put all the parts I need in a cart and be good? Unlike bestbuy where they don't sell all the components etc.. Closest microcenter to me is 4 hours away and I'm ready to make that drive haha.

How do I go about installing this cpu cooler onto my motherboard?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 04:22 AM PST

    https://imgur.com/a/Frvz2L5

For some reason, the retention hooks on this cooler are unable to be clipped onto the standoffs. Do I need to apply more force or add spacers beneath the standoffs?

    Edit: https://imgur.com/a/fxiIefy

Update: managed to successfully install the cooler! I clipped it on one side, and exerted quite a bit of force on the other. Cooler works well. Thanks for the help!

    Overheating Ryzen 5 3600

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 05:02 AM PST

Hi ! So i just finished building my pc and my cpu is overheating like crazy. I have tested it in 2 games only: Warzone = 83°C - 87°C / Cyberpunk 2077 = 78°C - 84°C. I've tried undervolting by 0.0500v and the temps only got down by 1 or 2 degrees and I've also tried re-pasting, still no difference. CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 GPU: RTX 3060ti Motherboard: MSI X470 Gaming Max Plus (I've updated the bios and i was thinking it might be an issue from that, but i'm not sure) PSU: (I don't remember the brand) 750W 80+ Gold RAM: HyperX 2x8 gb 3200mhz Storage: SSD 512gb Gammix And the cooler of the CPU is the stock Wraith Stealth.

PC completely dead after CPU cooler swap

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 09:10 AM PST

This is a fun one. I changed out the CPU air cooler on my PC. I did re-seat the CPU during the process just to make sure it hadn't wiggled loose while I was removing the old cooler. Everything went smoothly. Put it back together, press power and...nothing. no beep, no lights, just nothing.

*Power cable is plugged into PSU, plugged into the wall, power strip is on, PSU power switch is on

*Tried re-seating all of the power cables to Mobo

*Tried shorting the power switch puns with a screwdriver

Even if I did somehow damage the CPU during the install, the mobo should still light up, right? Wtf happened? Did the PSU just suddenly/coincidentally die? It is a 3 month old Super Flower Leadex III. Mobo is ASRock B550M Pro-4, CPU R5 3600, Oloy Warhawk 3600 2x8GB, ID Cooling SE234 ARGB cooler

Nvidia RTX 3060 (non-Ti) is rumored to have 6GB and 12GB VRAM models, not 8GB. Is 6GB VRAM a bad buy for gaming in 2021?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 02:25 PM PST

I built a PC recently with only one part missing: the GPU. I regret not getting the 3060 Ti, so I've been planning to wait for the 3060 and snag it on launch. Rumors are saying that they will not have an 8 GB model, rather a 6GB and a 12GB. The standard for gaming these days seems to be 8GB because that's what most cards have. Does this mean that 6GB will be a bad buy? If so, just how bad will it be?

In other words, if a game is optimized for 8GB VRAM and I only have 6GB, how bad will the performance penalty be? Would it be a minor difference or could it make a game unplayable?

    P. S. If you're wondering at what resolution, I do mean to ask this question generally. I have a 4K monitor, but with a 3060 (its not released yet so this is speculation) I presume not everything will run well at 4K or 1440p so I would have to scale down. So my question will apply to each of the resolutions.

EDIT: What about for someone who isn't necessarily playing the latest and greatest games, but also plays games from a few years back? I've been out of the scene for years so I've got some catching up to do!

    X570 - Worth it?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 11:30 AM PST

Looking to upgrade my PC but can't decide if it's worth upgrading my mobo. I want WiFi & BT but can't decide whether or not to just get a card or upgrade to an x570 with wireless. Also imagine the extra m.2 slot will be useful in the future... I'll be keeping the 5900x for a couple of years so I won't be needing an AM5 socket for a while.

    Current Spec -> (Upgrade Spec)

    CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 -> (Ryzen 9 5900x)

    Cooler: Wraith -> (Corsair H100i)

Mobo: B450 Tomahawk Max -> (Aorus Ultra x570??)

    Ram: 32gb (8x4) 3200mhz Patriot Viper DDR4

    GPU: Powercolor Red Dragon 5700xt -> (6800xt)

    Storage: Crucial P1 1TB SSD

PSU: Cooler Master MWE 550w -> (Corsair CXF 750W)

Thoughts? Advice for/against? Recommend a different X570 board?

    Thanks!

Input requested - first build for a newbie

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do) yes

Primary intensive uses include 3d modeling in Blender, photo editing in GiMP or similar, organizing years of personal photos and videos, CAD or BIM as available in free or open source software.

Would like to learn (i.e. maybe playing around with): world-building software such as Unity, music editing/creation, video editing, GIS, relational database stuff. For those uses I would prefer open-source, and do not have specific software in mind.

This computer will not be used for gaming.

I already have a Windows 10 Home license that I will migrate to this machine, as well as monitors and basic peripherals.

I want to spend less than $800 USD, and am located in the USA.

    More details

I started with an example basic gaming kit on PCPP, and changed the CPU, memory, and case in order to source parts from Amazon, and in response to some of the reviews. I welcome feedback on all the items here, and on those especially. The reviews suggest that the case is easy to work with. Also added a HDD.

I selected a CPU that does not have Integrated Graphics because this kit includes a GPU/video card (those terms mean the same thing, right?) - was that wise/unwise/unnecessary? Might there be a better CPU choice that has Integrated Graphics, despite it being redundant (as I understand it, please correct me if I'm wrong)? Is this a situation where IG is good as a backup in case the GPU fails? Should I care at all whether it has Integrated Graphics?

This GPU/video card has 1 HDMI port and 3 DisplayPort ports - does this mean I can potentially use 4 monitors? If not, what is the limit on number of monitors with this build?

Very grateful for this community, thank you for all your help!

ASUS TUF Gaming x570-plus chipset fan clicking sound

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 10:11 AM PST

Posting this because it may help someone. I was about to return the motherboard and rebuild. Yet it somehow went away on its own. Lucky day.

This was not about the chipset fan being loud. This was an outright clicking sound, certainly more than you can reasonably stand all day next to you.

Reinstalled BIOS and chipset updates. No improvement.

Next morning I spoke with ASUS and they agreed just by the sound on the phone it was a good idea to replace the motherboard. Spoke with Staples and they were happy enough to comply as it was within the return period, only catch was they are out of stock.

After hanging up I moved the chipset fan around gently with a q-tip. It was certainly catching on something. I imagine there is a counter there of some sort to keep track of rpm. But this was a bit more.

I had seen one comment in another thread that it had also suddenly gone away on its own so I decided to get that fan running a bit. Five hours later I was messing around with it trying to get the chipset fan to run and the clicking sound suddenly wasn't there anymore. FWIW I found out the most efficient way to get that fan to run is to just run bios. BIOS is especially useful since you can track the sound appearing and the chipset fan starting at the same time.

My guess is something was physically not cut properly in manufacturing process and eventually it dislodged. It could have been some sort of driver update that kicked in? Dunno.

Just posting this in case it can save someone some despair. I was not looking forward to doing everything again.

Thx to /buildapc advanced contributors for all your posts. It helped a lot.

I'm not a new PC gamer, I'm gaming on PC since 1995, but this was actually the first PC I built myself. So proud of it!

    The specs:

    • Ryzen 5900x

    • EVGA 3080 FTW3

    • G.Skill 32GB (4x8GB) 3600 CL 14-15-15-35

    • X570 Aorus Elite

    • Corsair M.2 NVMe 1TB MP600

    • Noctua NH-D15 (Chromax edition)

    • Corsair 850W Gold+

    • Lian Li Lancool II Mesh Performance

    • Dell S2721DGF 1440p 165hz

    (Upgraded from an 8 year old i7 3770k and GTX 680) :D

A BIG thank you to this wonderful and friendly subreddit and to everyone who helped me learn and choose over the months.

PC keeps getting worse, need help diagnosing.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 10:24 AM PST

My build is quite a few years old, and over time I've updated parts here and there to get to where I am now, but the other day my computer crashed and as I've tried to diagnosis it it keeps getting worse and I'm not sure what's going on.

    Parts list here https://pcpartpicker.com/list/N4vrp2

I've been having problems with my GPU recently, it's a factory cooled unit that I bought as B stock from EVGA. I've noticed occasionally when I start up my gpu would be at 50°C on idle and if I launched a game or anything it would spike to over 90°C. After talking with the manufacturer, it seems like occasionally the pump can have issues where it won't turn on during startup causing the GPU to overheat due to lack of fluid movement, and the best part, its out of warranty. But this isn't my primary issue, but thought I would mention it because this has caused me to cycle my computer on and off frequently lately in attempts to get the pump to start on startup which if it starts it works fine until I shut the system down.

So to my main problem, the other day I turned on my computer and got a black screen after the BIOS that said "Bootable drive not detected, please insert bootable media and hit any key".

My first thought was my Windows boot sequence was corrupted. So I put in a USB drive with the Windows installer but it couldn't load properly. Got an error code that led me to having to change my BIOS setting for hard drives to SATA/RAID which then allowed the install/repair tool to work properly.

So I again launch the repair tool, and the boot sequence repair tool which failed. So my next thought was OK, I'll reinstall Windows completely. I go into that part of the tool and when it loads my hard drives it shows my Drive 0 as unformatted with the entire volume 232.9gb of 232.9gb free. This was my first "wtf is happening" moment.

From here I decide to unplug all my drives and try just connecting one drive at a time and seeing what happens. Since I unplugged the drives whenever I power up the computer the PC itself will light up, fans come on, but the monitor doesn't wake up, and I'm getting an error code on my MOBO that repeats itself, but I can't seem to find anything on it. I've tried switching through all of my SSDs, tried different ports on the MOBO, tried switching to onboard video instead of my GPU, but still nothing, no visual what so ever, and just the same error code. It pops up with two digits at a time she cycles through, they appear to be 19 15 C2 C3 C4 5D 36 32.

I'm pulling my hair out, no idea what's going on. At this point my only thought is, is my motherboard shot? Any help or ideas is greatly appreciated, because I'm lost.

    Hello guys,

The RAM : https://www.amazon.com/HyperX-Fury-3600MHz-HX436C18FB3AK2-64/dp/B08CXYCJC2 The result of the search : http://puu.sh/H1XMe/4194982f2b.png

Should I buy another RAM or can I still go for it ?

EDIT: I've searched a little more in the list and it seems that there are no 2x32Gb kit.

EDIT2: Oh it seems I was worried too much : http://puu.sh/H1Y4B/91e6290a49.png
