This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Lower end cards from Nvidia and AMD?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 01:32 AM PST

I feel like we're in a weird spot right now with budget GPU's. The older generation superstars (1660 Super for example) are almost sold out and no new ones have been announced for this price category AFAIK. Does anyone know/want to predict when AMD and Nvidia will announce their more low-end graphics cards? I'm talking about the cards around the 200-350 dollar price range.

    Thank you all!

To new builders: Testing is the first thing recommended when building a PC

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 12:07 PM PST

I rarely see build guides mentioning this. The first thing to do is not putting everything together into the case, but: testing your components.

    1. do a paper-clip test of the PSU, make sure it works.
    2. unpackage mobo, CPU, CPU cooler, only put these together to test CPU/mobo functionality. This test can be done on any non-conductive surface like on top of the mobo packaging box. Only the ATX 24pin and CPU power cables are needed at this step, as well as jump start if there is no on-board power button. If both CPU and mobo are functional, the DRAM indicator will light as most today's boards carrying debug LEDs.

** if you don't feel comfortable about jump start, it is also possible to connect the PWR_SW connect from the case and use power button normally.

    1. power off (unplug PSU completely); insert RAM, then power on again. Still only the 24pin ATX and CPU power cable need to be connected. This tests if RAM is also working. The PC should successfully POST at this stage. For CPUs with integrated graphics, it is even possible to connect to a monitor and navigate into BIOS.

    2. unplug mobo, follow guides to assemble into the case.

    Why 2&3 is recommended?

This is called a minimal system test, which only tests the essential parts (mobo, CPU & RAM). Testing after a full assembly with a bunch of other things connected (GPU, drives, fans, etc.) increases the difficulty to fast identify which is faulty. For example, if you correctly did minimal system testing while the machine had some problem later, you'll be mostly sure that it is not likely caused by something DOA. Testing outside of the case is also recommended to reduce the efforts doing part swapping.

Hardware troubleshooting without professional tools is merely swapping or adding/removing components one by one. If something did go wrong, likely you'll eventually end up with a minimal system testing. So, why not do it and rule out component(s) DOA at the first place? It saves a lot of time tbh in such cases.

Finally, don't be afraid about powering on a board outside of a case: they are not so vulnerable as long as there are no screws left on it to short something.

    EDIT:

According to u/BOSbuilder, the worrying about unsecured components may be real. I still suggest minimal system testing, however, it can be done after securing the mobo to the case. In other words, put assembled mobo, CPU, and CPU cooler into the case (may also secure the PSU as well) before running a POST test.

In my honest opinion, including testing steps during the building process is a very good practice to identify any problems in its early stage, rather than suspecting and testing everything when the building is complete.

    Just built MY FIRST PC

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 10:24 AM PST

It's a i7-9700k l, GTX 1660 super, 16gb 3600 ram and I can't post pictures on here for some reason BUT ITS BEAUTIFUL it cost me about <1100$ It's got a little bit rgb but then everything else is blacked out so it's super sleek looking n I think I did good. I watched videos for weeks on how to build a pc before for the parts came in. I'm feeling good. Might be bottle necked by the GPU tho so in the coming years I wanna get a 2070super or 3070😳 I'm scared to overclock the gpu just cuz I've never done it and I don't wanna over stress my system I'm scared of breaking it so soon 😔

    30 series stock

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 07:39 AM PST

Right now the best buy website is restocking the 30 series every few minutes. Unfortunately I am missing out but anyone who needs a 30 series card FE go to best buy right now.

Edit: It's over now, looks like this is how best buy is going about releasing cards. Good luck for anyone who missed out. I'm praying they'll do this later in the week after I'm able to afford one.

When do we think graphics cards will be buyable again?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 11:31 AM PST

We've all been feeling the craziness of the GPU market. For more experienced buyers, do we feel like there is a time of year or an event that may drive down prices or drive up the availability of GPUs?

This shortage can't last forever, right? ...right?

First build... Won't turn on. Help this lost soul :(

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 09:34 PM PST

I finally decided to build a PC versus relying on my laptop.

    Specs:

    CPU: Ryzen 5600x

    GPU: EVGA XC3 3070

    Mobo: Gigabyte Aorus 550i

    PSU: Corsair Sf750+

    RAM: 32GB Crucial Ballistix 3200 MHz DDR4

    SSD: SK hynix 1TB NVME

    Case: Cooler Master NR200

I spent like four hours building this thing, looking at the Gigabyte manual to ensure the front panel is connected, the mobo is connected... etc. I flashed the bios so it can work with the CPU and thought it worked since it stopped flashing after a few minutes. After installing everything, nothing happens. I realized the CPU cable wasn't plugged in. I plugged it in. I replugged everything in. Nada. Not even the fans. I had such issues installing the nvme that I decided to use the slot on the back of the motherboard versus the slot on the front. The screw simply would not move after using multiple screwdrivers. I'm demoralized at this point. How can I troubleshoot what the issue is?

Managed to purchase an RTX 3060Ti, unsure if my build can handle it

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 12:09 PM PST

    Hello,

I built my PC three and a half years ago, so I haven't really been keeping up with many component upgrades etc. Apologies if I'm asking a basic question.

As I'm sure many of you are too, I can't wait to play Cyberpunk 2077, and decided to buy a RTX 3060Ti to give a little more power to my system so that I can run it well @ 1440p (Currently have a GTX 1060 6GB).

Couldn't quite believe it, but I stumbled onto a retailer today which had very few left in stock, but I managed to get a Gigabyte RTX 3060Ti 8GB OC. It'll arrive on Thursday.

I've read that this card is rated for a power consumption around 200W, and I just want to make sure that when it arrives, I won't unknowingly put a huge strain on my build or accidentally use the wrong cables or something with the PSU I have.

In addition (I hope its ok if I ask two questions in the same post), I'm thinking that maybe a CPU upgrade could be viable, as I don't really want to bottleneck the new GPU. I've attached my build below, and any advice on whether my PSU is still good enough (or what replacement you would suggest) and whether I should look to upgrade my CPU too, would be very helpful!

    CPU: Ryzen 5 1600

    MOBO: MSI B350 Tomahawk

    RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws 3000MHZ

    PSU: Seasonic M12ii Evo 520W

    Thanks so much!

    Settled for an i5-10600k build

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 12:35 PM PST

This is mostly a squee post. I haven't built a new PC in a long time. Mostly I've gotten older parts and built on those, but it's meant I'm usually 6-8 years behind in my hardware. My current pc is running an i7-3770k w/ a new 1660 super amp gpu (previously a 750ti).

I had planned on building a new PC using a ryzen 3600 cpu, but couldn't find one to purchase. Canadian stores seem to be sold out on all fronts.

Instead, I went with an i5-10600k build.

CPU: Intel Core i5-10600K 4.1 GHz 6-Core Processor CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15S 82.52 CFM CPU Cooler Motherboard: Asus TUF GAMING Z490-PLUS ATX LGA1200 Motherboard
Memory: Patriot Viper 4 Blackout 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory Case: Fractal Design Meshify C ATX Mid Tower Case Power Supply: SeaSonic FOCUS 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX PSU

I'll be reusing the 1660 super amp and the ssds from my current build.

The psu is a smidge over powered, but I may add a second gpu some day. The motherboard is also compatible with the next gen rocket lake cpus so I've got some room to move if I need more oomph later on.

I'm looking forward to putting it together this weekend!

I want to build my kids (8, 11) a system out of parts I already have.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 09:32 AM PST

The system will be used for 2 things primarily: light 3d printing with a kid friendly printer like a FlashForge or something similar, and so they can mess around with video creation and editing. They will probably want to download some games, but there is no expectation that it should run anything high end, probably just cheap Steam games.
Mostly I just want them to have the opportunity to experiment with and learn the technology.

I have 2 systems that I have been using for 5 and 3 years respectively that I can cannibalize for parts.

System 1 is older and was used as a desktop PC:
    CPU: Intel Core i5 4690K @ 3.50GHz
    RAM: 8.00GB Single-Channel DDR3 @ 799MHz
    Motherboard: ASRock Z97 Extreme4 (CPUSocket)
Graphics: 2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 (Gigabyte)
Storage: 238GB Crucial_CT256M550SSD1 ATA Device (SATA (SSD))

System 2 was our HTPC, which we no longer have any use for but has newer hardware:
    CPU: Intel Core i5 7400 @ 3.00GHz
    RAM: 8.00GB Single-Channel Unknown @ 1066MHz
    Motherboard: ASRock Z270 Gaming-ITX/ac (CPUSocket)
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 630 (ASRock)
    Storage: 3726GB Seagate ST4000DM004-2CV104 (SATA )
    223GB KINGSTON SA400S37240G (SATA-2 (SSD))

I think the only advantage on the old PC is that it has a better (for its time) video card. Either way I'd like to cobble them together one system out of the parts with a minimum investment, maybe just increasing the RAM or something. The desktop PC has a nice case with a lot of space in it. The HTPC was built in a slim case that is kind of a pain in the butt to work in.

Not getting optimal fps on a 5700xt at 1080p

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 11:30 AM PST

I recently upgraded my girlfriend's GPU to a 5700XT from a RX580 but she's not getting the performance boost that one would expect for this kind of upgrade at 1080p. It is most noticeable in Warzone where she hovers around only 60-80fps at medium-low settings, but on games like AC: Valhalla, she gets ~90fps at ultra.

    Her specs:

    • Ryzen 2600x
    • 16gb 3200mhz ram with XMP enabled
    • 650w 80+ gold PSU

    UserBenchmark: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/36569467

I have tried DDU, disabled link state power management, all drivers up to date, freesync enabled etc.

I'm not the most knowledgeable on AMD graphics, so was wondering if I missed anything or if there is anything I can try to get her GPU performing to its optimal state? Thanks for any help!

What's the difference between cl16 and cl18 ram?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 04:36 AM PST

Hi, I'm making my first PC build and it has a corsair theme, and I was looking at ram for my build, and I found a pair of sticks that add up to 16gb at 3600mhz, cl18. However, my friend recommends that I get cl16 at 3200mhz for the same price, what's the difference?

    Upgrading Prebuilt

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 07:54 AM PST

I recently got myself a Prebuilt pc for Christmas, and I talked to my friend about it, regrettably after I ordered it, and he told me that the power supply and motherboard were not the best.

I was wondering if it's possible to replace them even though it's a Prebuilt pc.

It was running just fine until tonight. Got a 15523 Time Spy score just a few days ago. 17913 GPU sub score; CPU at 8225.

Now in AC Odyssey I only get around 80 FPS at 1080p where before the average was above 140 and in COD Cold War its around the same. In that game I got on avg 190 earlier today. So two massive drops. GPU-Z tells me its sitting at above 88 percent TDP so its not drawing away from the slot or anything is it? Im mindblown, anxious and dont know what to do.

Is that what a failing GPU looks like?

    Any help would be appreciated.

970 Evo slower after installing samsung nvme driver

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 10:27 AM PST

    Hello!

I've built my new PC that contains 1TB 970 Evo nvme ssd. After configuring bios/windows/drivers I ran CrystalDiskMark to see this SSD performance.

First run was with default Windows nvme driver. The result: https://imgur.com/a/IDnfM9C
I thought: Sweet! That's better than advertised. I wonder what result I'm gonna get after installing samsung's dedicated driver. It should improve, right?

So I installed samsung's driver and ran benchmark again: https://imgur.com/a/7oE4E7L

So the sequential read speed decreased a lot.

Anyone had similiar experience? Do you have some ideas what can I do to improve it? Will rollingback to windows nvme driver help?

I also installed samsung magician hoping it has some tweaking features that would improve it. But it doesn't.

Other pc specs: Ryzen 5600X, B550 Gaming Plus, Crucial Ballistix Black 3200CL16, 3060Ti Gaming X Trio, RM650x.

During benchmarks ssd temp was about 45C according to HWMonitor, so I don't think it could throttle.

Lian Li Lancool 205 or Corsair 275R Airflow

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 02:11 PM PST

Both of them are almost the same price locally

Corsair 275R Airflow 18 dollars more, There are plenty of reviews about the Corsair 275R Airflow and almost non about the lancool 205, but the lancool 205 Looks a bit nicer in my opinion.

I would go with lancool 205 its just that idk anything about the temps

A bit of a niche question about extension leads

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 02:10 PM PST

While I know this isnt necessarily linked to building a PC, I think this might have been a problem encountered by those using powerline adapters. Also important to note that I will be referring to UK style plugs.

Basically I only have 2 wall sockets in my room that are very close together, and when I place the powerline adapter (my only Internet option) in one, it's just slightly too thick to fit another normal sized plug in the socket beside it, which effectively leaves me with one socket. If I had a plug (I.e power strip) that was a smaller plug that normal, I might be able to get around this and use both sockets but I don't even know how to word that on Google to look for such a product. Has anyone ever had this problem and found a solution?

Again, sorry this is such a niche question but thanks in advance for any feedback.

Edit: the powerline adapter is a pass through adapter so I am able to plug one powerstip into that but I don't want to overload it either

Ryzen 5xxx + MSI Motherboard = No post - Please Help

    Initial Flash

The last few days have been an absolute nightmare for me; and I'm relatively sure it's a nightmare quite a few people have gone through. This Saturday, I excitedly tore open the box for the last piece of my PC build - the ram - and got to work. I flashed my BIOS onto my B550 Gaming Edge Wifi before I built, following all of the online instructions, and it took 5 minutes, then restarted, like they said it was.
There was no CPU installed, so I figured that the CPU debug LED was no issue. I assembled my system over the next day, having some trouble with the Dark Rock Pro 4, but I finally finished the system.

    First System Bootup

I plugged in everything, and powered the system up, and I was surprised to see the red CPU debug LED still active. I see nothing on the screen every time I try and reboot. I've tried flashing the bios twice more, to no avail - still no post .

I follow all the instructions provided by MSI: Format to FAT32, add the file in the root directory, rename to MSI.ROM, and insert into the system. I then click the BIOS flash button, and the red light flashes for fifteen seconds slowly, then starts speeding up to indicate that it's writing. The fans are spinning, and after five minutes it restarts; Consequently I am greeted by the red LED, and no signal still. I've been waiting a long time to build this, so this is really stressful and frustrating for me.

When I shut it down after the restart, and power it back up, I have the same issue.

    Specs if it's relevant: 5900X, B550 Gaming Edge Wifi, 32GB G.Skill Ripjaws V 3600 CL16, RTX 3070, 970 EVO Plus 1TB, Pure Base 500DX, Seasonic GX750

Have any of you guys had this issue? What can I do to resolve the issue?

How should my AIO radiator be set up?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 01:49 PM PST

Hello, I recently had someone tell me that the tubes/pipes on my AIO should at the bottom of my radiator instead of the current top I have it at.

    Heres my build

As you can see the pipes from nzxt Kraken z73 are at the top and someone told me it'd be better if my radiator was flipped and pipes came from the bottom. If it is better, why?

    Thanks!

    3060 Ti model differences

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 08:05 AM PST

So I've been trying to grab a 30 series since the 3070 launched without luck. The 3060 Ti better fit my uses and price range, but I was also having terrible luck securing one of those until today. I managed to snag the EVGA FW3 Ultra model just barely from Microcenter this morning only to come home, just get it in installed, and have all the stock trackers I had set up start flagging that Best Buy had restocked. I had originally wanted an FE, so I panicked and placed the order to reserve one.

Now I am trying to decide what to do. I'm not sure of Micro center's return policy since I have now installed the EVGA card. If allowed, I'm tempted to return it and get a little money back on the FE which I originally wanted. On the other hand, I feel lucky to have this card now and feel like I should just be happy and cancel my Best Buy order.

Does anyone have any advice? Are the performance boosts with the OC'd EVGA card worth the price difference?
