    Simple Questions - December 02, 2020

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 04:11 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

I wanted to let you guys know, you're not alone!

3060ti, within seconds - out of stock.

It's a pain, I've been waiting for years to be able to build my own PC. I got back from working away from home about 2 months ago and decided to go for it!

What a bad time to try and build your first PC!!

I bet more than a few of us on here are tired of scalpers robbing us of the chance to do something that we love.

You guys aren't alone, and down the line this will get better!

EDIT: Didn't realise there would be quite so many comments. It's great to see there's such an amazing and helpful community out there! And awards too? Thank you kind strangers

PC Shuts down when the bomb explodes in CSGO

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 05:37 AM PST

Hello! So i've been having this issue ever since i built my computer about 3 months ago. it has this weird shutdown issue (can be found here) that always happens whenever a big explosion happens in games (left 4 dead, csgo, etc) It also happens at random, but its consistent with the explosions. I don't have a dedicated graphics card so i think it may be an issue with my iGPU, but im asking here once again to see if theres another fix. I used to think it was an issue with my RAM because when i altered the clock speed it would do the issue even more, but after realizing it happens with explosions i assumed it was the igpu. if anyone has advice other than "buy a gpu" thatd be appreciated.Specs:X570 Aorus EliteRyzen 5 3400gVega 11 GraphicsCorsair Vengeance rgb pro 2x8 3600 (clocked at 2133)EVGA 850w gold psu

edit: guys please stop making "pc is bomb" puns they arent funny anymore im in tears guys please

    I got it!!!

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 10:39 AM PST

I'm sorry to post this here as it seems a bit... asshole-ish, but I legit have no one else to tell that cares enough/understands the struggle. After constant refreshing and updating today I managed to get through on the 3060ti FTW3 ultra gaming and place an order with EVGA. No bots, no scalpers, just constant refreshing. I'm not sure if it was just easier to get or if I got lucky, but this was the last piece I needed for my first ever build and I cannot wait till it comes in next week!

[Question] What can companies do about the whole scalping issue?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 06:17 AM PST

Genuine question. I am sorry if it's already been answered here. Lately every major GPU, Console release has had major scalping issues and regular customers can't buy the products for weeks. What steps can companies to take to avoid this? Sorry for being such a noob.

My friend doesn't want to build just yet but instead upgrade his prebuild. What can be upgraded, and what can (if any) be salvaged?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 01:06 PM PST

I know prebuilds are not meant to be discussed here, but I'm stumped and could use some help. My friend doesn't want to get rid of his prebuild because of how good it's been for him, but he admits he wants to upgrade for newer games. Considering how old the build is I figured it couldn't be done, but I also figured to at least see if there is SOMETHING I can do for him. Below are the specs and open to any/all suggestions.

His PC's model number is 870-224, it's an HP Omen

    The motherboard is an Odense2-K

The current RAM in it is two 4GB cards of PC4-17000 (DDR4-2133)

The Processor is an Intel Core i5-7400

The Graphics Card is an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 (3GB)

    A 1TB HDD (7200 RPM)

    and a 500 W PSU

Should I buy a 1660 super now or wait for a 3060 to come out *Hopefully in Jan*

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 03:36 AM PST

As the title says I am stuck on deciding. With how anything 30 series goes out of sale the minute after should I just play it safe and buy a 1660super now and sell it down the road and buy 30series? Or take a gamble on the 3060 being in stock???

Edit: Working with a 1050 2gb. I have been playing apex, while it works for the other esports titles I play I have to use a lower res for good frames and I would also like to play other games.

Build is listed above, specifically having problems with my ADATA Swordfish 2TB SSD boot drive. On startup and upon opening any program on the drive, the SSD gets pinned to 100% usage at around 3-5 MB/s. Then, Windows will freeze for awhile until it eventually chews through the startup. Performs great in games and file transfers, but is having trouble with general windows use.

The weird part is, the drive has 100% health using CrystalDiskInfo. It also performs to specification in synthetic benchmarks from CrystalDiskMark.

I've tried swapping between m.2 slots and the issue persists. The drive has no available firmware updates from ADATA, which would be my go-to to fix the issue.

Any ideas on how to proceed? I can return the drives if need be, but I'd rather fix what I already have.

Pc randomly shutting down (not overheating)

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 08:22 AM PST

My computer is randomly shutting down during various tasks. I made sure it wasn't over heating by doing a stress test and the cpu was at a constant 40-50% but stayed at 49 degrees, and the gpu was at a constant 98% at 60 degrees.

I think it might be the power supply as while plugged in but with the computer powered off it makes a buzzing electrical sound. If anyone has any ideas for testing it would be appreciated.

There are no error codes the pc just completely shuts off instantly with no warning.

I'm not in to super crazy pc cases and stuff so I kept it all lowkey, saving up for a better cooler soon! (anyone got tips?)

    My new build:

Got lucky with parts in South Africa - First build in almost 10 years! Local Pricing Incl.

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 09:55 AM PST

I was fortunate enough to successfully order AMD hardware on the respective launch days - in South Africa of all places.

My previous build was completed in 2011 with only the GPU and SSD changing since. So, it was certainly time for an upgrade!

    The Old Machine

    • Intel i7 2600k (OC'd to 4.5GHz)
    • ASUS P8P67 Deluxe
    • EVGA GTX980 SC
    • G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 16GB (2x8GB) 1866MHz
    • Cooler Master Hyper 212
    • Samsung 850 EVO SSD (OS Drive)
    • Thermaltake Chaser II
    • Cooler Master GX750

    The New Machine

    • AMD Ryzen 7 5800X [R8999 / 587USD]
    • ASRock X570 Taichi [R5999 / 391USD]
    • XFX RX 6800XT Speedster Merc 319 [R17499 / 1141USD]
    • G.Skill Trident.Z Neo DDR4 32GB (2x16GB) 3600CL16 (OC'd to 3800MHz) [R3999 / 261USD]
    • Phanteks PH-TC14PE [R1279 / 84USD]
    • Sabrent Rocket 500GB PCIe4.0 NVMe (OS Drive) [R1999 / 130USD]
    • Phanteks Enthoo Evolv X (Satin Black) [R3179 / 207USD]
    • Super Flower Leadex III V2.0 ARGB 850W 80+Gold [R2079 / 136USD]

As you can see, not cheap to be a PC enthusiast in SA - these dollar prices are downright depressing but it is what it is.

These prices include VAT and import duties and are calculated at R15.33:$1 (Today's exchange rate)

Does anyone know what this thing is in my PSU?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 08:27 AM PST

    https://i.imgur.com/fBPPaOU.jpg

It's a brand new PSU but it's fan isn't working. So I removed it from my case to take a look and I found this piece of golden plastic lodged inside it. I'm sure it's not something I dropped inside it plus it has some white substance (adhesive?) which leads me to believe it's some PSU component which got dislodged. What do you guys think? RMA? It's a Cooler Master MWE Gold 750W.

Furious after waiting 1 month for my used 2080ti in the mail for it to be a scam

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 08:24 PM PST

About a month ago I saw an ad for a 2080ti on kijiji. After contacting the seller and requesting photos and videos of the card working everything seemed to be fine. He was a good 6 hour drive away so I decided to have him ship it to me for 20$. I sent him the money via Interact E-transfer and a day later he sent me a tracking ID with Canada Post. Skip forward a week and I'm all eager to embrace the warm of my 2080ti, I receive the notification saying it will be delivered in the day so I spend the whole day waiting in the living room for the mail courier to arrive. He shows up and drops off 3 packages, none of which are my graphics card. I ask him if hes seen the package and he says he hasnt. I contact Canada Post and make a claim on my package, they respond saying they will look into it. A few days pass and 3 more tickets result in nothing, I contact the seller, ghosted no response from them. I start to panic a little bit but hold out hope for Canada Post to find my package. Last night I decided to check the tracking number again to see if they forgot to email me a notification, they most certainly did. So they found my package on November 25th, at first I'm incredibly excited until I read , "Package is on route to sender". Canada Post sent my package back to the seller....... 4 more support tickets later I find out it is probably because the address on the package was not filled out while the senders address was. They inform me that there is nothing I can do to stop the package from returning to the seller, even though I can see in the tracking infromation it is located at a 5 minute walk from my house in a local shipping center. I have still yet to hear a response from the seller and have contacted my bank to where they can't do anything, the police to where they can't do anything and the Canadian Anti Fraud Center to where they can document him but still not get my money back. Thats how my week has been going how about you?

MSI B450M Mortar Max - Won't POST - EZ debug CPU LED stays on

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 01:45 PM PST

Dear all! This is my first post here, hope you guys can help me out, as I am a bit at my wit's end as what to do.

    First off, system specs:

    Issue
The build is 4 months old. And up until now, it has worked like a charm, never had any sort of issue with it.
From the get go I've updated the BIOS to the latest version (7B89v28).
The memory is listed in the QVL and is running at XMP profile 1 at 3200MHz.
Out of the blue last friday (27-11-2020), I wanted to turn on the PC, but it didn't post (so no screen, no bios) and the first EZ debug LED stayed on.
All fan's are active, and the GPU fan is running at (what appears to be) 100%.
Normally it does this until the first EZ debug LED turns off, and than it will go to Idle speeds and continues to boot.
But the first EZ debug LED didn't go off.
I can only hold the power button for about 3-4 sec to turn off and try again.

    What I've tried so far
Unplugged all USB peripherals and restarted.

    • Unplugged all cables except power cable and HDMI and restarted.
    • Remove the GPU and restarted.
    • Removed GPU and SSD's (except M.2) and restarted.
    • Removed the CMOS battery for 5 min (reset BIOS) and restarted.
    • Took out 1 memory channel, put the single memory dimm in another channel and restarted.
    • Unplugged and plugged the CPU power cable, checked all power cables, and restarted.
    • Removed CPU, checked for bend pins (no pins are bend) and restarted.

At this point I had only the CPU with custom cooler, memory, PSU and M.2 SSD installed.
I restarted (while mounted in the case) and it posted again!
System indicated that the BIOS was reset, and I had to press F1 to enter setup.
Once there I've enabled XMP profile 1 and moved around some icons for the boot setup.
I one-by-one installed a component and checked, until the system was complete again.
So far so good. Saturday and Sunday the system worked as usual.
But this morning its the same trouble again.

As I don't have a 'quick' workaround, it's not a solution to constantly dismantle and test the whole system.
What I've deducted, the problem must be caused by either the Mobo, Memory or PSU.
Maybe the CPU, but I doubt it, given that the pins are all fine, but I'm no expert.

Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance for reading through this and giving advice.

Fan Placement In Case For Best Cooling

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 01:41 PM PST

    Hey all,

Recently decided to do something about the questionable quality MOLEX fans that came with my budget case (Zalman S2). Got an early Christmas present, and now have 4 Noctua NF-F12 industrial ppc 3000 rpm fans.

The Zalman case has 2 intake fans, and one exhaust fan that run pretty slowly. My plan was to remove all Zalman fans and put three of the Noctua fans as intake, and one as an exhaust. I thought about just upgrading the entire case instead of asking for nearly $100 in fans, but kind of like the "boring" aesthetic Zalman went for (my co-workers can see my pc tower during work calls), and airflow potential with the extra fan and mesh front really isn't bad.

Before starting, I had the idea of maybe keeping a Zalman fan as additional exhaust in the top of the case (one is a 4 pin that connects to my mobo, the MOLEX ones can get bent). Is there any reason not to do this? I'm using a Noctua NH-U12S as my CPU cooler, and was thinking maybe it'll mess up the flow from the front fan to the CPU fan to the exhaust fan?

In the end, I'd have 5 fans total (3 intake, 2 exhaust)

I'm still pretty new to the PC world, so bear with me if this is a stupid question.

    Thanks!

    M.2 NVME SSD Placement

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 09:04 AM PST

Hello everyone doing my first upgrade on my rig. I just got a Samsung 2TB 970 Evo PLUS NVME SSD.
My motherboard (Gigabyte x570 gaming x) has two m.2 PCIE 4/3 slots. Slot A is via the CPU lanes and Slot B is via the motherboards Chipset.

I've noticed the 970 evo plus running hot. The performance is amazing but it hitting constant 70c during gaming (even sometimes over 70c if I tab out to do other stuff with the game open) is concerning. I called Samsung and they said the drive is suppose to work within 0-70c and will throttle after 70c. In Slot A my Motherboard does include a heatsink which will lower temps by about 5-6c but not a whole lot.

I'm thinking a good chunk of heat on the SSD is coming from the exhaust from my GPU as Slot A is placed right above the GPU and right under the CPU. My GPU vents heat upward right over the SSD which I believe is causing needless heating of the SSD. Slot B is under my GPU and would actually be positioned where the GPU would help draw some of its heat out of the case. The only thing I am worried about is Slot B is controlled via the chipset on the motherboard.

Is there a huge difference between a NVME PCIE 3 SSD being controlled via CPU vs Chipset? I'd like for it to be in Slot A with the CPU lanes but the heat dump is a bit much.

I'm running a Ryzen 7 3700x, Nvidia EVGA 2060 super, Gigabyte x570 gaming x, killer wifi card, Only other drive is a sata ssd.

3-Generation PC Build for Christmas - Sanity Check

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 01:07 PM PST

    All,

I want to lean on this community one more time to sanity check a Christmas/birthday/4th of July/armistice day gift for my son that I hope to build over the holiday with my father. We're self-quarantined until we see them, I'm very excited to share this holiday with my son and father.

My son plays single-player worldbuilding games and likes Universe Sandbox. I'd like for him to play those at 60fps with medium to high settings. I'd also like this PC to follow him for 7+ years up to and through college just upgrading the GPU if he desires. He wanted something flashy.

Part list below, all pieces are bought and paid for. All that's left is a Wi-Fi card.

I've been watching sales and open box opportunities for the better part of a year and am also posting to show that you can build above your budget if you're patient and/or willing to buy Open Box items. I estimate that versus purchasing all items today at once, I've saved about 20% over the entire build.

Two questions for the community, for the Wi-Fi card I'm planning on getting the Intel Wi-Fi desktop kit - $25 to take advantage of the m.2 Wi-Fi slot on the MB. Anyone else do better buying an m.2 card and antenna separately? We have a wifi-5 router with no plans to upgrade, but longevity is a consideration.

Second, the monitor is deliberately the weakest link and value for money here is important because he shares a room with his younger brother and if anything breaks, it will be the monitor. Thoughts on a reasonable up or side-grade?

All that being said, I would like general feedback on the build. Online retailers have generous return policies this year so much of what I have I can return or exchange if there are better options.
